Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Black Shoes Mafia Edition
The Oilers throwback jerseys will feature black shoes, which is a look that's very familiar to former Nitty Lion Kerry Collins.
Steve McNair believes Vince Young is maturing into a true NFL QB, and he sees some of his own struggle in VY's problems:
At the crux of Young’s on-field issues last year was his apparent refusal to re-enter the season opener against Jacksonville just before suffering a knee injury. McNair himself admits to having his own premature retirement thoughts back in 2000 after a hit from Kansas City’s Duane Clemons broke his sternum, an injury that would eventually require surgery to fix years later.
"I think we all go through difficult times in our lives. I can remember the time when I got hit by Clemons of Kansas City and broke my sternum, and I called my agent and I told him I was ready to retire," McNair said. "We all go through that. It’s just a part of life and a part of growing up. The thing that Vince has got to do is counteract and come back with a clear head, and say, ‘This is what I do. This is my profession’ and come back and play well. And I’m quite sure he will."
Single game tickets for the Titans' 2009 home games will go on sale July 18th at the LP Field box office.
PFW is hearing that the Titans will keep four TEs this year, which is bad news for the guys at the bottom of the WR and RB rotations.
Jim Wyatt catches up with reserve LB Josh Stamer as he recovers from a groin injury that kept him out of the playoffs last year. Stamer, who started his career with the Bills, is pushing hard to be back on the field by the time we meet his old employers on the gridiron.
Peter King has some rather absurd notes this week, including that Matt Millen is on the verge of getting another (presumably front-office) NFL job, and the Lions are close to awarding the QB spot to Stafford (that's why they're the Lions).
Now that the slower period of the off-season is upon us your help in finding out of the way Titans stories is more important than ever. I remember
when I heard VY was picked, my immediate thought was, “This is great! McNair is the perfect QB to mentor VY, a few years under him and VY is going to be a great replacement”.
Sigh, those were the days…

Okay...
…so PK first does the unthinkable by throwing his boy Favre under the bus with those two Takenton quotes. THEN he goes on to mention that Favre is working out with Steve McNair’s kid. And THEN he notes, out of the blue, that Favre isn’t making any news. What up with that? No news, but at least three totally gratuitous mentions. Gimme a break!
Peter King is a man who no longer knows what to do with himself, I think.

Talk about damning with faint praise
Contemplating retirement after suffering a cracked sternum vs. contemplating retirement after suffering a round of “boo”.
Ok….

yeah
and after Mac had been to the Super Bowl. Could this comparison be any funnier?

what does everybody think about schwartz and starting stafford from day 1?
i say go for it. expectations are zero, literally. it all depends on what they think about stafford’s mental toughness. i think if you have enough confidence to take him instead of a sure thing OT, you have to have confidence that he is tough enough to take his lumps early, but ultimately get better and learn from it and not flame out. no one is going to blame stafford if the lions suck next year. everyone knows it’s an no-win situation. simply not picking first again next year is their only realistic goal regardless of whether its culpepper (who has been worthless since the big knee injury) or stafford at QB. unless they think the O-line is going to regularly threaten stafford’s personal safety, which they might, i say invest in the future. if he’s the real deal, all the struggles will only make him tougher.

Lions fans need things to cheer for
I say go for it.
Another sure sign it’s the sloooowww period: so little offseason news we’re talking about our adopted NFC team.

There’s no way the Cowboys RBs are taking the Smash and Dash nickname. Lendale won’t allow it.

Rash
For some reason, I just don’t see that as a nickname one would want.

They just can’t have smash and dash. So they get the bottom of the barrel.
