He called this self-serving piece of garbage by Jason Whitlock an "honest" article. I myself think it's... garbage.

Bottom line, reporters need to be LESS a part of the story and not MORE of one. They all need to stop writing in the first person, stop thinking about their own personal reactions to things, and bottom line, treat their business like a business.
I don't care if some sports reporter loves the game. It's his JOB to report accurately and honestly. There are many other jobs and many other would-be writers if, for whatever reason, some reporter doesn't like what he or she has to do to keep food on his family's table.

As for the rest, following the money is a good start. Answer the question, "Who benefits?" and you will be on the road to good reporting. Miss that, and you've missed the point.

I agree D

There has got to be a line between reporting and editorializing. And if you are editorializing, quit trying to pass it off as fact.

Although I do agree with Whitlock about ESPN. (I feel a little dirty that I just typed that).

How so?

ESPN is the furthest thing from a monopoly. They have PLENTY of competition, including from Whitlock’s employer. It would perhaps be better to say that ESPN is the most successful part of their market—though I would again argue that this is not the case—but even if that’s true, it’s not MONOPOLY. Not at all.

BTW, the reason I argue that ESPN isn’t all that is because of the deal they signed to get MNF. They paid something like $1.5B for it. That’s almost three times the $600M that NBC paid for Sunday Night Football. So at least from that perspective, it seems clear that the NFL felt that it had more stake in seeingt football on NBC than on ESPN. And that is NOT monopoly. In fact, that’s not even particularly good business.
