PFT Reporting the Lions Will Take Matthew Stafford #1
Of course this is a Florio report, so there is about a 65% chance it is wrong.
I think it is a HUGE mistake for the Lions to take Stafford. Your thoughts welcome..

I watched Stafford a lot at Georgia and he's not going to be a top-flight QB, IMO
he’s not accurate enough to hit small windows, can’t take any velocity off for short-dump passes, stands flat-footed in the pocket and doesn’t shuffle his feet, doesn’t react well to pressure…
That being said, he may lead the league in deep bombs for a few years during his career because he’s got an arm that rivals the best I’ve ever seen. He can push it 60 yards on a line – no arch to it.

Primary reason not to take Stafford is the risk of taking ANY QB with the #1 overall pick.
By percentages, it’s much better to take an O- or D-lineman. Hell, even someone as notorious as Robert Gallery has managed to actually work out in some form on the Raiders’ line. Yes, he’s a Right Guard, but he’s still on the team. They actually got SOMETHING besides salary obligations out of the pick.

I tend to agree it's bad but...
I would take him over Mark Sanchez, so if the Lions are dead set on a QB, then Stafford is the right choice.

picking someone up
just because they’re there this time works just as poorly in the draft as it does at closing time. At least in a bar you’re not offering a $40 million contract.

who is their qb coach?
if anybody can teach him how to harness that mega arm of his, he could be one of the greats. definitely a risky pick for a team with so many holes though.
reality check
is it even likely that detroit has already made a decision so far out?

HUGE MISTAKE
which is why i think it will probably happen. They should take a left tackle.

I think they should take Stafford
They need a face for their franchise after that disgusting 0-16 season for the fans to rally behind and a LT can’t provide that

good point
but they don’t need a face for the franchise NOW. I mean, they pick 1st every year. If they get a QB, he needs protection. Look at what happened to David Carr and Patrick Ramsey. They were permanently ruined by getting thrown into the lions den. Stafford will be hiding in the shadows like an abused child after 1 game vs MIN. Besides, look at the QB’s coming out next year!

Make Calvin Johnson the face
he’s the best player they’ve had since Barry Sanders anyways…
