Devil's Advocate: Anquan Boldin

So I know the conventional wisdom in Titans Nation is that Boldin would be a brain-explodingly amazing pick up for the Titans via trade.  In an effort to stir things up, I submit this article for those of you with ESPN Insider.  It's a little piece by the guys at Football Outsiders which should serve to bring at least a little rain to the current pro-Boldin love parade.  For those without the WWL's pay service, keep reading and I will lay out some of the issues raised.

Injuries, age, draft picks and cash money dollar bills after the jump.

Star-divide

Injuries

The first big red flag on Boldin is that he has only stayed healthy for 2 full seasons out of 6, and only 1 of the last 5.  He has missed 8 regular season games over the past 2 seasons.  No one is ever going to question his toughness after his bionic face display this season, but many injuries, especially in the legs, simply can't be "toughed out".  Boldin is renowned as a guy with no fear going up for the ball in traffic, but this is the NFL, and sometimes you pay a price for that kind of fearlessness.  A guy who has issues with staying on the field when he is in his 20's generally doesn't make it too far into his 30's.  And that brings us to the next issue...

Age

Boldin will turn 29 during this coming season.  This statistical survey from several years ago suggests that "old" for a WR is 30.  Granted, the sample appears to only cover 1998-2002, so it's not cold hard fact, but the article shows how about 50% of WRs perform better at 29 than they did at 28, and again, about half of 30 year-olds improve from what they did at 29.  Then the improvement rate drops off a cliff.  Only 24% of WRs were more productive at age 31 than they were at age 30.  This suggests that regardless of where he is next year, Boldin's time as an elite WR in the NFL is coming to a close.

Fear and Trembling

These two issues combine in a fairly unsettling way.  We know Boldin has had issues in his youthful years of 23-28 with staying healthy.  We also know he is coming up on the age where most WR's begin a fairly steep decline.  The third thing we know is that this guy wouldn't even be on the market if he weren't looking to get paid in a big-$10 million- way. And lastly, we think we know that a 1st and 3rd round pick are going to be the minimum asking price for Boldin.

So the question becomes, given these troubling indicators, is betting the farm on Boldin, sacrificing most of our remaining cap space, a chance to pick another Michael Griffin or Chris Johnson, and the ability to resign some of our own guys, worth it?  Griff and Johnson together next year won't earn $10 million, and neither have even hit their peaks yet.  Boldin has shown no signs of decline at this point, but things happen fast in the NFL, especially to WRs.

Boldin has 2 years left on the current deal that has him discontented in AZ.  He would turn 31 the season after that contract expires.  Knowing what we do about age trends, it becomes fairly clear why Boldin is so insistent on a new deal, and even clearer why no one has stepped up to the plate and made an offer yet.  In fact, stringing Boldin out "listening to offers" is probably the smartest thing the Cards can do.  They can try and placate him (pretend to negotiate or shop him) for the next two seasons, milk the remainder of his prime, and then let someone over pay him in 2 years.

Verdict

I didn't expect to convince people suddenly that Boldin is a bad idea for the Titans.  I just wanted to point out why this is not a slam dunk, and perhaps explain why no team has made an offer yet.  Imagine this scenario last year at this time.  If we had made a similar move for Boldin, we would have no Crazy Legs, and probably would have had to forsake at least a couple of the sweetheart long term deals we inked with Roos, Stewart, and Finnegan.  Can anyone tell me a single WR, in Tennessee's offense, is worth all that?  I say you can't.

So my final verdict is this:  The combination of new salary and draft picks that have been mentioned in the media for Boldin simply aren't worth it to this Tennessee Titans team.  If they can get him to agree to something in the 6-7 mil range, it becomes more feasible, but 10 mil a year for a WR is just plain stupid in a run first scheme with a game manager @ QB.

Given our current GM's 2 for 2 home run rate on 1st round picks, the cost in draft picks alone might be too high when you consider that a really good draft pick could have 6-10 years of high level success whereas Boldin will most likely begin to decline within the next 2-3 years.  If there was any way to not send our 1st round pick, that would change everything in my mind, but I don't see any way that we pull that off.  Lendale and/or Scaife come to mind as players I would like to see us shop, but how much they would want either of those guys, I have no idea.  Perhaps those two guys + a 2nd or 3rd rounder? Who knows.

The bottom line with sports deals/trades is this:  you always want to make sure you are not paying for a player's past performance, but rather wisely gauge their future output.  With Boldin, the past is stellar, but the future is dubious.  The only way this deal is going to happen is if the Titans step up and decide to pay for his past performance to the tune of $8-10 mil per year and a 1st round pick.  I simply do not think that is the smart thing to do.

“but 10 mil a year for a WR is just plain stupid in a run first scheme with a game manager @ QB.”

I think in general I would agree with this statement, but the reason I want Boldin so badly is that he is the best WR in the game (except perhaps Hines Ward) for our system. He is an extraordinarily physical WR who, by punishing opposing CB’s, will open up CJ to the outside. In addition, his main strength is taking shorter completions, the type that ball control offenses go to most of the time, and turn them into big gains.

With CJ’s big play ability, Washington’s ability to stretch the field and keep nickelbacks on the field, and Boldin’s catch and run ability, I don’t see us as being very defendable.

Boldin is the PERFECT WR for a game managing QB who doesn’t throw 30+ yard balls often.

+1,000,000

It is hard to find a WR who would actually be a better fit who has come available in recent years.

Injury concerns certainly aren’t tempering our highs on Chris Johnson, though a non-Titans devotee could ceratinly warn of his “softness” to temper overexcitment about the possibility of their team acquiring him from the Titans. If, say, he was out for a few games this year because of another injury (not completely unusual for a RB or WR), then a critic could almost brand him, with fire, an injury risk. Titans fans, like myself, would take umbrage.

Boldin would be an instant upgrade – an instant impact player who will immediately make this team more dangerous. It will not require three years of development – the understood developing time of a WR in the NFL – nor will it require waiting six or seven games into the season to find opportunities to work in the new guy, that new WR who’s a little green but has great potential – if he works out.

He would be a player that defenses would immediately need to scheme against, if only by taking an extra guy out of “the box” several times a game, giving CJ a one-man-clearer hole through which to run.

The positives overwhelmingly outweigh the negatives here, IMHO. It is a deal that should be made on the part of the Titans.

chris johnson comparison is off base

he’s shifty, runs low to the ground, and is super quick, so people really lay huge hits on him. he got hurt by a cheap shot. boldin gets hurt because he is an enormous target that goes over the middle all time and is bound to get lit up sometimes, and his track record suggests he gets beat up pretty often.

Which is why we'd take umbrage..

….at the suggestion.

However, it is a critical analysis a non-Titans devotee could make to temper excitement about him, yes?

just imagine

how often CJ could bounce runs to the outside (especially if the play is stuffed in the middle), when CBs actually have to turn and run with our WRs every time they go out into a route.

Well

Well! yes it’s true we are run first team!

But let’s keep in mind a few things here.. McNair was Co-MVP, Mason had several 1,000 yard seasons. Culter’s numbers were a product of Dingers offense.

Its a little misleading to say we are run first team. Yes we use the run.. But if you have the weapons in QB and WR dinger and fisher are not afaid to use them. We will always line up and play smash mouth football.. and just when the other team thinks another run is coming Wham! 10 yard out and first down.

How does a QB like McNair come within a few yards of owning the all time passing record for a game on a run first team?

I’m just a little tentitive on using that run first term….

Good post

One point: Even if what you say is true that WR production drops steeply at 31, that’s still two years of Boldin playing at a high level. And the Titans have a window right now to try to push for a Super Bowl. You never know how long that window will stay open before it shuts and you have to start trying to pry it open again.

Of course, one way to slam shut that window is to make a bonehead trade that eats up cap space and gives away key players and draft picks, but I think most people would not label this trade “boneheaded” if it happened, even if they disagreed with it a bit.

that was really my point

paying all that for boldin would be the football equivalent of going all in before the flop. if it works, we might be champs, but it’s also the kind of thing where if something goes wrong, we have a contract from hell on our hands and we blew a #1 pick.

The problem will the age 'argument' is this.

It’s a valid concern (age & injuries) but in this Fan Poat this comment was made:

Only 24% of WRs were more productive at age 31 than they were at age 30. This suggests that regardless of where he is next year, Boldin’s time as an elite WR in the NFL is coming to a close.

The problem with that is that nobody is asking Boldin to get better (or more productive) next year than the year before. Just continue to play at or near his current level.

Boldin in 29. It’s not like he won’t be able to play after 31.

A look at Marvin harrison shows that his production only fell off after their SB season in 2006. In 2006 Harrison was 34 years old.

Despite his bad attitude and some dropped balls, TO’s production has sayed pretty constant, and he’s 35 years old.

And of course, there’s Jerry Rice.

Boldin’s a GREAT player (I know, I live in Phoenix) and he can easily give the Titan’s great play at the WR position for another 4, 5 even 6 years.

by GeoMak on Apr 24, 2009 2:58 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

maybe he is

but you are comparing a guy who isn’t currently the best WR on his own team with 2 of the all time greats in harrison and rice, and a guy whose work outs supposedly rivaled rice’s when they were together in SF.

Look

I’ve watched Boldin since day one. His rookie season was one of the best in NFL history, and that was before Fitzgerald was part of the team.

Fitzgerald took his game to it’s highest level in 2008, in part because Todd Haley demanded (and Boldin help out) with the weakest part of Fitzgerlad’s game; YAC.

In years past Fitzgerald way too often almost fell down after the catch. Through Haley’s insistence and Boldin’s help he corrected that weak spot in his game.

Nevertheless, Fitzgerald’s play has nothing to do with the way Boldin has played the game since his arrival in Phoenix in 2003. He’s one of the best WR’s in football, he’s long been considered one of the toughest players on the team, and, in Kurt Warner’s words: “He’s the most respected member of the team.”

Whatever Fitzgerald does or doesn’t do changes none of that.

Fitzgerald is a unique talent in the game. He’s the best at ‘High-Pointing,’ going up and grabbing the ball at it’s highest point no matter how many defenders are covering him. Nobody does that better than Fitzgerald in the NFL.

His ability top do that doesn’t diminish Boldin in the least.

no hate

just the acknowledgment that he only works hard when it benefits his bank account and that he is one of the most replaceable players on our roster
