Ravens Balking at Boldin's Price

The Ravens are unlikely to trade for wide receiver Anquan Boldin, a team source said Monday. The sticking point is that the Ravens consider the Arizona Cardinals' asking price too steep, according to the source. The Cardinals are looking for first- and third-round picks in exchange for Boldin. The Ravens, who have six picks in this weekend's NFL draft (their fewest since 2000), would consider the trade if it did not involve multiple draft selections. They would become interested if they had to give up only a first- or a second-round pick and a player, the source said. The problem is, the Dallas Cowboys set a high bar for receivers when they traded picks in the first, third and fifth rounds for Roy Williams last season.

Baltimore Sun

---So along with ESPN, we now have two sources saying the asking price is a first and a third round draft pick for Boldin, who still has two years left on his contract but hopes to sign a long-term deal if traded.---

Considering where the Titans pick, and the fact that they have 10 total picks, this seems like a deal the Titans should jump on.  I know Boldin is a pipe dream, but I submit this for your discussion:  Fair price?  Would you have the Titans take the plunge, given the choice?

I can see

A first and third as reasonable. He’s been to the pro bowl three of his six years, for pete’s sakes. What are the chances if the Titans spent their first and third round selections this year on two receivers that either one would turn out to be as good as Boldin is? If they’re planning on taking a receiver first round anyway, why gamble?

Despite the fact that the Titans have 10 choices this year, I can’t see them doing this though. They just aren’t a wheeling-dealing kinda team. They want to build through the draft, and if they can keep coming up with picks like CJ, hard to throw too many rocks.

I agree on both counts.

1.) Fair price (imagine if you they could offer this year’s first and next year’s third – which they’ll get back in Haynesworth compensation!).

2.) Titans won’t do it. (Though I still hope for a miracle, in that respect).

I do think it would be ridiculous to pass on this price and then draft a WR at #30. Pass on a still young, three-time Pro Bowler for a project? Unjustifiable.

the problem for a lot of teams (esp. the titans)

is not just the trade cost, but also knowing that boldin is looking for larry fitzgerald money. some teams just don’t believe in making a WR the top paid player on the team. i would do 1st and a 3rd in a heartbeat if it was known that he could be resigned at a reasonable price.

I wasn't sure about this

I guess since the Titans aren’t on the receiving end of trades like this often, I’ve never known how it works. When a trade is executed, does the team receiving the player always have to resign them to a new contract, or do they inherit the terms remaining on the contract from the trading team?

by numbertenox on Apr 21, 2009 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

yes

but that’s the same contract Boldin is so unhappy with he wants out of Arizona. He’s expecting a new contract form whomever trades for him.

new contract after trade is almost always the case in the nfl

especially since a huge chunk of trades are caused by unhappy campers demanding a new deal to begin with.

After some quick googling

It’s hard to find much information on trade mechanics and salary cap. But, what few sites I found discussing it all seemed to say that the receiving team on the trade assumes the players existing / remaining contract. The trading team has to pay out any remaining signing bonus the player had due. Anquan has 2 years left on his current contract, seems like I heard. So what’s the deal? I know we have some serious salary cap pros lurking here…

To clarify...

….yes, the Titans would assume the current contract’s last two years AS IS.

They could renegotiate right away (as is often done in trades like that) to a longer-term deal. They do not HAVE to renegotiate, however, and can choose to keep the current deal is it remains.

The only concern with not renegotiating is a potential holdout after this season by said player for a longer/better contract if he has a great year.

But the Titans can take this a couple of different ways if they made the plunge…

anquan was talking about holding out in AZ

so it wouldn’t be any different here. i’m pretty sure that trades just move the remainder of the trade to the next team. a first and a third is way too much for 2 years of a disgruntled hold out receiver. it’s only worth it if they are willing to write out a big new deal. i doubt the titans are. i wish they were.

OK that all makes sense

We could keep his existing contract (how much of our cap room would even that take), but he’d likely be just as pissy with us as he is with AZ without a new deal.

In any other draft...

I would say no… but this year’s just doesn’t seem to have that much talent. I think a 1st and a 3rd are a steal for Boldin

Christie kicks it high and short...Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25...He dishes it back to Wycheck...He throws it across the field to Dyson...

Crowd roaring after Suter’s goal tied it up… Preds win the faceoff and Arnott crosses the blueline, slapshot and a SCORE! Arnott blows it by Hasek and the Preds take the lead 4-3…

…..What are you trying to say, gotitans27??

But you would have to admit that even with him being disgruntled................

and upset about the whole AZ contract situation, he still did put up some good numbers and the fact that the hit that broke his face off could have sidelined him for the rest of the season and he came back 4 games later, you would have to admit that he is a soldier and still plays well when upset, unlike ocho cinco.

I think

they should do it. do they get more cap space after the draft? It seams like i’ve heard that, and that we could use some of that space on a player the team received in a trade for a draft pick. does anyone know if that is true?

Good.

F THE RATBIRDS! I hope they go 0-16 this year, but since their schedule is easy, I predict they make the playoffs again. unfortunately.

Boldin is a stud and worth the money he is asking for.

If the Titans managment woud be willing to pay for Boldin, I think he would earn every cent TN gives him. Everything I have seen/heard about him screems “I PLAY HARD EVERY PLAY IN EVERY GAME”. Sign the man, please!

You're right KC

I don’t think anyone here is arguing that Boldin would not be worth the price. He would be an awesome addition—to any team really—it’s just not the Tennessee Titans’ MO to go throwing around multiple draft picks and huge contracts like that.

Still got my fingers crossed though….
