Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Vince Young Breaks His Silence To Assert His Silence Edition
Vince Young broke his self-imposed media silence this weekend to talk with Jim Wyatt. What did VY discuss the most? How much he's going to not talk to the media this year. The silent treatment was also my strategy when I wasn't allowed to go see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie with my buddies on a school night... of course I was nine years old then.
A bevy of Titans' players weighed in on who they think the team should go after in this weekend's draft and how they're looking at it. Nothing earth shattering here, other than Griffin wants the team to focus on the CB position and thinks we're good at WR.
Reports surfaced this weekend that the Jags are close to signing Holt, but Id still expect this to drag n past the draft. If they draft Jeremy Maclin, expect the field of plausible suitors to open up a little more. Besides, if Holt sees Gage and Washington as too much competition then he's obviously a shadow of his former self. Don't count the Titans out just yet.
See, Peter King knows what I'm talking about... oh wait that probably means we're screwed:
7. I think -- no, I know -- that Tennessee is not out of the Torry Holt derby.
The Sporting News delivers a mock draft wherein we take Rutgers WR Kenny Britt. I imagine they'd go defense over Britt, but it's interesting none the less.
Don Banks has us taking Vontae Davis.
If there was one man hurt by last week's decision by John Madden to retire than the guy who drives the Madden Cruiser, it was Frank Caliendo, who immediately lost his one actually funny impersonation (outside of Jim Rome, who 90% of his club audience doesn't know).

siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh
reading those quotes from vince make me wish his media freeze had just stayed that way. the reason “he can’t win” in the media is because he never says the right thing. instead of “im working my ass off to take the starter spot back from kerry by week one” its “woe is me, i have no control, the media hates me, i can’t win”. he just doesn’t have the maturity or mental toughness to hack it in the nfl at this point.

Pouty
He came off very pouty in the beginning of that article with the whole “I will just keep my mouth shut” crap repeatedly, but all in all I think he has made some progress. Going from a nearly suicidal pouty kid to just a pouty kid shows at least a little growth. Besides.. he could have been a Cutler and started demanding a trade as soon as he got his feelings hurt.
He should have shown some fire and assetiveness in wanting to claim his starting role back, but the fact that he flat out says he doesn’t want it given to him but he wants to earn everything is positive in my book. He might not be where he needs to be yet, but I think he is making progress.

leaders
dont keep their mouth shut or “wait til they need me”.

Leaders don't keep their mouth shut?
So in order for Vince to meet your leadership criteria, he must talk to the media? This is crazy. Sure, Vince didn’t come off well in this article, but I don’t think it says anything about his leadership. I think you’re reading into this a little much.
All I’m taking from this article is that Vince understands his role is as the backup. He’s come to terms with that. For now, he’s going to deal with things he can control, like working hard.
he was the #3 pick !
he is only a back up because he FAILED in his role as a starter, and ever minute he spends backing up a 39 year old game manager is just an extension of that failure to live up to what he was supposed to be. his job is not to be a back up. there is no good reason for vince to settle in as a back up other than it’s the easiest thing for him to do, and he’s pretty good at easy.
and no, you dont HAVE to talk to the media, but you should be ABLE to say a few words with out all the “poor me, the big bad media” crap. telling the media how you aren’t going to talk to the media is childish at best. kinda like hanging a neon sign around your neck that says “please don’t pay attention to me”.

I didn't take it that way
I took it as, he is the backup and isn’t going to complain about it. But, he’s working hard to win back the starting role.
"I just told him what was on my mind and how I feel about the situation. I don’t want them to give me anything. I just want to come in and earn everything.’’
That sounds encouraging to me. It’s what I want to hear out of him. It sounds like someone who’s past the “poor me, the big bad media crap”. He’s just going to keep his head down and do his job. I think you’re reading too much into this:
I am not going to get into the hoopla any more because of the fact I can’t win any more, I see.
Perhaps
you missed the part where I said “He might not be where ne needs to be yet, but I think he is making progress.”
I didn’t say he was a leader right now or that he should be back under center right now. All I said was that his attitude right now is better than last year. He still doesn’t have the best attitude, but if he is what Fisher says he is and the QB of our future, I am willing to be happy he is making progress. We can over or under analyze everything he says, we can complain about every word he does or doesn’t say, and we can rant and rave all we want but if we are stuck with him, then any positive progress is better than the alternative.

A little much, huh?
In his ramblings, all he says is that he’s going to work in the background and be available if the Titans want him, and he’s being immature here? I’m not following…
Plenty of players dislike talking to the media; that doesn’t make them babies. After the ridiculous overblown stories about Vince last season, it is understandable he is cynical about the process. He didn’t demand a trade, talk crap about Kerry Collins or Ramsay or Fisher, or otherwise say that the Titans should start him. He said he will take care of his responsibilities and answer if and when the team calls. That’s it.
You guys went from probably trying to defend Vince too much to finding every little thing to take a stab at. It’s a little disconcerting.

I wasn't trying to hammer VY over this
just give him a little crap. That being said, VY has never owned up to the fact that he quit on the team, and he never apologized to a fanbase that did everything to defend him before he quit on said team. He still acts like he lost his job because of a 2 week knee injury, not because Jeff Fisher (and surely more Titans) believe he quit on them last year… WHILE THE TEAM WAS WINNING THE GAME!
So, sorry if I’m not comforted by his silence and whinny attitude with the media.

You are absolutely right
He quit on his team and he let down the fanbase. He needs to make amends and earn his spot back. I still think VY at this stage is better than he was at that point last year. Still not good enough, but looking slightly better.

I mean seriously:
"Whatever they want me to do that is what I am going to do. If they want me to sit on the sideline and be there to watch the game then that is OK with me, but at the same time I am getting my checks and I am fine.’’
Spoken like a true champion.

This wouldn't be the first time
That something Vince said came off the wrong way in print, but is interpreted a completely different way when you hear him speak. Context is important. It doesn’t sound good here, but it’s conceivable that Wyatt asked something like, “Are you OK with your current backup situation and pay structure going into this next season?”
and the answer is:
“hell no i’m not ok with it. every morning i wake up with a fire in my gut to go out there and PROVE in every way possible that i am the best qb on this team and a leader on and off the field. sitting on the sidelines, though understandable given the way last year played out, is an absolute affront to my existence and nothing is going to stop me from getting that starting spot back. i wish kerry all the luck in the world because i am gunning for his job this offseason and i will be damned if anything is going to stop me”
or
“whatever. i’m getting paid, im just gonna be vince and if they want me i’ll be ready. i can’t control what the coaches decide, so all i can do i shut up and smile. i can’t win with the media either because i always say dumb shit that makes people question my desire, maturity, intelligence, or leadership qualities, but it’s never my fault, so i’m just gonna be vince and shut up and work hard.”
damaged goods folks. the only way he gets under center again is if it is handed to him by an injury to kerry.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Maybe.
I think you’re nitpicking though. The most important thing right now is how he’s handling himself around the team and on the field.
I AM SO READY FOR THE VINCE YOUNG SAGA TO BE OVER.
Either be the quarterback you were drafted to be or go away.
Official MCM Hater!
Amen
It is hilarious how much traction anything gets that he says. He is the freaking back-up QB. Who cares what he says?
Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.
Agreed.
I understand why they wrote the article, but at the same time, “Back-Up QB Vows Not to Talk to Media” is hardly a story worth printing.

"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
"Either be the quarterback you were drafted to be or go away"
my thoughts exactly
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
We've never given him the chance to be a great QB
The year he started he was throwng to gage, Williams, and moulds with LenWhale at RB. If you think anyone is going to suceed with those weapons you’re out of your freaking mind. Maybe the Titans should have realized that we were drafting a running QB, and shouldn’t have tried to turn him into a pocket QB. The Titans fed Vince to the wolves and you know it.
