Around SBN: Transfer Rumor: Bolton On Verge of First Signings

Jay Cutler told FOXSports.com Wednesday night that he thought he would be traded to an NFC team. He was right. However, it was not the team to which everyone had him linked.

Cutler has been traded to the Chicago Bears for two first-round picks, a third-round pick and quarterback Kyle Orton, FOXSports.com has learned. Denver will receive Chicago's first- and third-round pick in this year's draft, and Chicago's first-round pick in 2010, along with Orton. The Bears get Cutler and the Broncos' fifth-round pick this year.

Dammit.

Ah, well, it was nice to have hope while it lasted…

Now we can stop wondering about possible QB deals and work on landing Torry Holt.

by hartley on Apr 2, 2009 4:45 PM CDT reply actions

Yup.

Now we’ll live or die with Kerry Collins (or perhaps Vince Young), period.

I know at MCM I’m among the minority when I say it, but I really think investing all the eggs in Collins’ basket will ultimately lead to the closing of the window of opportunity for the Titans, again – a window which opens only briefly in the NFL. At this point I’m hoping for a Holt signing and an all-defensive Draft (with the exception of a future starting Center), because (and maybe I am all alone in believing it) the gameplan now is going to have to be to emulate the 1985 Bears and 2000 Ravens. The team is going to have to field a defense with both talent for the AGES and on-field performance for the AGES, complemented by a running game which will not be allowed to have any days off – especially in the playoffs – unless the defense puts the points on the board in their stead.

It is what it is – and right now I’m hoping Collins becomes 2009’s Most Improved Player/Comback Player of the Year. Or perhaps that Vince puts it together. Maybe with better WR weapons this team can have an effective passing offense, to my elated disbelief. Just maybe, but I’m not a believer yet. There is an awful lot invested in a QB I have no particular confidence in right now………

All we can do now is hope for the best. Hope the Titans can not just repeat, but improve on 2008, and that no other top-tier teams (Colts, Patriots, Steelers, et al) improved at an equally proportionate rate.

Cutler would have looked nice in Titans blue, but I guess it was never a serious scenario. Here’s hoping Collins has a better year with better weapons, or that Vince matures into his own.

Yup.

How bout coming back from a 12 TD season and one-and-out in the playoffs?

Though I suppose he’s the reason they did win 13 games, but not the reason they couldn’t go anywhere in the playoffs. You can continue your Collins worship – forever flawless because he got VY benched – but I won’t. I call a 12 TD, last-placed passing offense and one-and-out in the playoffs like I see ’em.

“What is he gonna come back from?” LOL How bout Kordell Stewart and ERx grossman like numbers…….?

I actually like VY more than Collins

There you go acting like a fool and assuming stuff again.

And I am still waiting on your proof of the Titans attempting to trade McNair for Manning.

Have you ever watched a Tennessee Titans National Football League contest?

Yes.

And it’s not the first time I’ve seen a team with a sub-par QB win a lot of regular season games.

Here in Chicago, it has been the norm.

And that sub-par QB would have won a playoff game

if not for a cheating Ravens team injuring our best player and two red zone fumbles.

The same cheating Ravens team....

…..basically…….

that assassinated QBs with dirty play back in the 2000 Title run.

Has the referee blown the whistle yet on the CJ-bending play, or is he still waiting to see if the play is over?

Aw, hell, I forgot about Bennett!

The best receiver Cutler ever threw to in college is also with the Bears.

That should make the both of them happy, then.

Wow.

No way the Titans would have given up the equivalent to get Cutler.

McDaniels has put himself in a tough spot, though. That’s a BIG move, one that he will live and die with. Theoretically, this move could make sense because he can get “his guys” through the draft. But, when you make dramatic decisions like trading the young Pro Bowl quarterback, people are going to be quicker to judge and will want results…now.

Dang

this sucks

and I can’t stand the Bears

Watch out for them this year~~

….yes, that is a nice combo. The Bears should do well.

they just got a heck of a lot better

and they’ve been burning resources looking for a franchise qb for decades. what they payed may well prove to be worth it.

by numbertenox on Apr 2, 2009 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

for those of you saying the Titans shouldn't have given up

the equivalent…the Titans are a well built offense, and NEED a QB. Anybody who thinks our chances of winning a super bowl with kerry collins over jay cutler is crazy. All immaturity aside he’s probably the 4th or 5th best qb in the league whether you think Philip Rivers is better or not isn’t really the point. The Titans should’ve traded whatever Denver wanted.. Totally disappointed.

by jacobb23 on Apr 2, 2009 5:24 PM CDT reply actions

don't really agree

It’s all about need. THe bears franchise need for a franchise QB, the amount of time they’ve spent without one, is way higher than the Titans. When you need something bad, you pay more than the other guy for it. No way were the Titans going to outbid some of these more needy franchises for Cutler, and frankly I’m glad they didn’t.

by numbertenox on Apr 2, 2009 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions

This trade makes the Bears a legit contender now

We will be fine though, we passed on Cutler in the 2006 Draft and have to live with that decision. I’m making a bold prediction; next off season we will be talking about how much Vince Young improved and how exciting our offense is with him in it. He has never gotten the chance to really play next to CJ and I know he will do good

A Bird in hand is better than Two In A Bush

Cutler (Bird in hand)

Two 1st Round Picks (Birds in bush)

Kyle Orton (freebie)

I think the Bears made out like a bandit in this one. They also got a 5th round pick in this years draft.

Congrats Bears. Well played.

they just become instant contenders. happy for their fans.

nice...4 vandy players on da bears

hope cutler does well. now i wont mind watching all the damn bears games on tv here in chicago.

by rolypoly32 on Apr 2, 2009 6:14 PM CDT reply actions

contender for what?

the Super Bowl? The Bears? Nah. their defense is not very good anymore. Won’t be surprised if their D drops off even more next year. The O did get a hell of a lot better with Cutler and Pace tho. No way the Titans would have (or should have) competed. We need to draft the future of our defense, and It would have cost us an extra 1st rounder in that VY’s trade value would have gone to zero. I still want to see Vince play again before we throw in the towel on him.
And KC won us some games last year singlehandedly. Without Mccairens, he’ll probably win us more. As long as we can sign Holt, I’ll expect us to be better next year than last, as we will be much more balanced. The best way to replace Haynesworth is by upgrading the offense, if that makes any sense.

by joshuaboone on Apr 3, 2009 4:44 AM CDT reply actions

I think you guys are over-reacting.

Let’s look at this price in real terms that it might have cost the Titans.

Jay Cutler = Kerry Collins + Chris Johnson + Michael Griffin + Craig Stevens.

Really?

I’m skeptical. Because yes, Cutler is a significant upgrade over Collins, but beyond that, those last two first round picks have been very good players. Core members of the team for last year’s success. We all see CJ’s impact, but let’s not forget that Griff also led the League in interceptions for several weeks last year. So, bottom line, this current FO has done very well with first round picks. Giving up TWO is asking a lot.

I agree with you D

that's kind of biased

considering we were pretty lucky or skilled on the last two first round picks.
two years before it would be:
cutler = kerry collins + pacman jones + vince young + calvin lowry/courtney roby.
also, now that we have griff and cj, i think that adding cutler would be a huge step to setting us up for a legit 4 -5 year run. we don’t really need 2 more 1st rounders since the only glaring hole we have now is cb (and wr, but we wouldn’t ever draft one in the 1st round so it doesn’t matter).

anyways, i still agree with you. i don’t think it was worth it since the titans tend to do well with their 1st picks unless they are in the top 10.

by rolypoly32 on Apr 3, 2009 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Even then though.

The issues with Pacman and Vince were less about talent evaluation and more about character evaluation. Both played an important role in the turnaround in 2006.

by SuperHorn on Apr 3, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

But that's a different Front Office.

You can’t grade Rheiny by Reese’s work.

i'm just saying that you can't assume 2 first rounders = 2 pro bowlers

reese did a pretty good job too. anyways, like i said, i don’t think it was worth it either. looking at the bears first round history though, it was definitely worth it since their first round track record is mediocre at best.

franchise quarterback?

we don’t need no stinking franchise quarterback!
