Albert Haynesworth Signs with the Washington Redskins
Adam Schefter is reporting that Albert Haynesworth and the Washington Redskins have reached a 7-year $100 million contract. I saw this run across the crawl on NFL.com and ESPNEWS but This is not a surprise. Most of us have had a bad feeling since Albert announced that he would test the market. I want to see what the guaranteed money is before I comment on if the Titans made a mistake or not. I am sure August will have more on this in the morning links. Use this thread for all of your free agency discussion.cannot find a link online yet (probably because my internet is acting crazy). No word on the guaranteed money. Looks like he will get $41 million guaranteed. We will have a lot more on this later, but the Titans are smart for not touching that money.

the word tampering is coming up a lot, but it probably won’t mean anything

Well, despite everything that was said about this leading up to Free Agency...
…it was, very obviously, all about the money for Big Al.
You can hardly complain about the way things turned out, but man, that is disappointing. I can’t imagine that this thing is going to have a happy ending—either for Washington or Albert himself. But he got PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAID!

This reminds me of what my mother-in-law told me when Drew left for St Louis
I said “I can’t believe he would leave Nashville to go play in the football black hole of St Louis. What the heck is he gonna do when they get beat by 50 every week and go 2-14?”
My mother-in-law “He’s gonna go home and roll around in all that money.”
Smart woman.

$41 Million
Washington has $41 million in guaranteed money, That’s bananas.
If the Titans wanted him, they would have had to put themselves in a position to blow up the team in a few years; that said, I don’t think that they even really fought for him and that sucks. They could have handled their business beforehand and made him the highest paid defensive tackle without it leaping to the insano money that Snyder just screwed himself with.

There was no way to get it done earlier.
Big Al has OBVIOUSLY been planning this day for a very, very long time. He has been extremely patient and hard-working to get to today, and it paid off. He has repeatedly gambled that he’d stay healthy and dominant long enough to earn the monster check, and I believe that he would have suffered through just about anything to finally see it come around.

Sad to see AH go...
But I would have been livid if we had paid that kind of money. Year after year, players leave the Titans for better money. And very few players live up to the contract. Mason and Rolle were two that I wish we could have kept. (add your two cents if you can think of other players that continued to perform at a high level)
But we blew up our salary cap to pay for other players deemed more valuable. AH is a force, and I would have loved to keep him on the team, but not at the expense of the team’s future. The Redskins can’t buy a Superbowl (nor can anyone else for that matter).
Ok, forgot all of that and pay Boldin.

and
And How is the fact that this was reported 4 days ago NOT TAMPERING????
Well I’m going to laugh when he plays 10 games and takes half the plays off..
I’m actually glad he’s gone now..

Glad he's gone?
You mean, glad we didn’t spend silly amounts of money? I can understand that.
I can’t understand anybody being happy about losing the best defensive player in football, though.

I would much rather not have him
than have him at 100 million with 41 guaranteed.
I can’t get over 41 million guaranteed. That’s just stupid.

Congrats to Big AL and his children's, children's, children...
They should all be rich.

I'm not glad
But I’m not mad either. I am pretty happy that we have a front office that wont pay that much money for one player.
Also, pretty excited to see the front office go after Chris Canty. I don’t know much about him, but it’s good to see them be aggressive about shoring up out D-Line post-Big AL. Seems like he was pretty good in Dallas, so I’m sure he will be a beast when Wash gets done with him.
Interestingly enough Canty is visiting Washington today and Tennessee tommorrow. How in the world can the Redskins afford AH, Dante Hall, still expect to pay Canty, and sign their draft picks.

That's my question. How in the world are they affording all of this? Setting themselves up for a cap explosion in a few years.

I wonder the same thing
I was watching the NFL Network last night and it said the Redskins had 5 million in cap room. They make 2 big signings that total about $63 million in guarantees. How does that work?

If I understand correctly
Since 2010 is not collectively bargained, all guaranteed money in deals signed in free agency this season only prorates for 2 seasons. That means that today the Redskins are $55 million over the cap, and that is before they make a draft pick.

I wonder how that works next year, though
Since things aren’t negotiated.
I mean, couldn’t Snyder say, well I paid AH all this money because I didn’t think we’d have a cap in 2010? And, he’d be right…the logic is sound. How does the league deal with something like that?

Under. It's two.
Snyder’s counting on the uncapped year—and being able to dump all the expensive “dead wood” he’ll have on the team at that point. Big Al will (easily) fall into that category by then.

Screw counting on it
Snyder’s gunning to FORCE that uncapped year. He’s going to be the most active party in that insane plot.
Effin’ idiot would kill the modern-NFL and still not win a Super Bowl with his $9 billion payroll.

sooooooo
chris canty anyone? i think that would be a very smart move on our part. doesn’t replace albert, but it’s about as close as we are going to get. he played DE in a 3-4 in dallas, but we know coach washburn can send pretty much anyone to the next level at any position, so i bet switching him to DT in our 4-3 wouldn’t be too much trouble. 26 years old, espn scout’s inc. says this:
Canty had his best season of his pro career and has improved his pass rush package, but needs to continue to expand his initial moves and counters. He is a good football player who plays with a great motor and should continue to get better as his career progresses. His outstanding size makes him a fit in both a 3-4 or 4-3 defensive schemes and his versatility gives him added value
sounds to me like a guy that could come in, get coached up a bit, and be a really valuable part of the line.

Happy that nonsense is behind us
And and a ludicrous contract it was…interesting to see the level of obvious tampering by Redskins organization. I believe the Titans with land in good shape after this one….having much confidence in the skills of Coach Washburn.
