2009 NFL Scouting Combine Open Thread
Today is the first big day of workouts at the combine. NFL.com has Ebon Britton, Shawn Nelson, Michael Oher, and Max Unger as the players to watch today. I doubt any of those players are particularly interesting to the Titans.
NFL.com also has an article about how good this receiver class is. With the news from yesterday that the Titans met with Heyward-Bey and Hakeem Nicks, could this be the year they finally take a receiver in the first round?? Probably not. As Michael Scott says, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, strike three." Name the episode.
If you are watching any of the workouts today and notice anything interesting, leave it in the comments. I will try to have a wrap-up post from today's activities tomorrow morning.

"Homer" Support
I’ve got to throw a little support to a kid at the combine that most folks don’t know about. His name is Bernard Scott of Abilene Christian University. He is the 2008 Harlin Hill Award winner…the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy for Division II. He recently played in the “Texas vs. The Nation” game and held his own. For more info, see his website: http://www.bernardscottfootball.com
He reminds me a lot of CJ. While running back is not a need, I sure won’t mind the Titans taking him with a late round pick. A team can never have too much speed.
So if you watch the combine this weekend, check him out.
breaking crabtree news

out 8-10 weeks with a stress fracture in his foot which will require a screw to be inserted. this could be huge for crabtree, as 8-10 weeks puts you right up to draft day before he might be able to work out again. i’d say his stock just took a big hit.

i have decided
there is a least a chance we try to grab hey-bey. he’s the kind of receiver we always go for, big theoretical upside, yet undervalued because of less than stellar college numbers. not sure if this is a good thing or not, kinda frightening actually, but i think if we go WR early it’s gonna be this guy.

Honestly
after watching all of the youtube highlights possible… The draft party sort seem to be the best kind. I would prefer to have Heyward-Bey or Nicks… They catch the ball with their hands so well its ridiculous. They seem to both be really good after the catch. Britt looks pretty good, kind of like my cousin he seems to be big, tough, and really hard to take down after the catch. Just feel the other 2 have more to offer.
I don’t have too much to go on as far as scouting cuz I didn’t get to watch enough Ncaa football this year. I like Crabtree, but he obviously won’t be there when we pick. I like Maclin, but same goes for him. Some of these other guys like Harvin and Derrick Williams look like they aren’t prototype WRs which is what we need. They seem to be in the backfield or running reverses an awful lot. Just not seeing enough video of their ball skills.
So after all is said and done I give Heyward-Bey the edge. He looks a bit bigger and faster than Nicks, ball skills looking pretty much even.

Who's Impressed?
Our boy Heyward-Bey ran the fastest 40 of the receivers at 4.30. Brian Robiskie has looked great catching the ball, but he’s not the burner type.
If I hit a hole-in-one on this grand slam the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.
Robiskie ran
in the 4.4s which is great for his build… I know that’s a lot faster than anyone expected him to run.

a certain tyrone calico was the fastest in his class at the combine too.
the “great physical specimen, football underachiever” model of WRs will scare me for the titans until it works at least once. it’s funny how we can take any highly athletic joker on the d-line and turn him into a quality NFL starter, but can’t develop a consistent, let alone brilliant, WR to save our lives, even when they have “all the tools”.

I think the biggest difference
between guys like Robiskie and HBK (Nickname alert) Heyward Bey aka Heart Break Kid is that they can actually catch the ball consistently not just run fast and jump really high like Tyrone. Calico couldn’t catch a cold and when he did he bobbled it till he was out of bounds. These guys are catching the ball with their hands(just their hands) with regularity and everyone knew they could run, now they are just showing they can run faster than anticipated.

sounds good to me
receivers who catch the ball consistently would be quite a culture shock out at baptist sports park.

I hear ya
I don’t want or feel we need any more Mcareins or Calico types.

speed kills
the titans are a fast team where needed at all position except for, you know it, WR. if they get hey-bey they will have grabbed 2 of the fastest 40 times out there in 2 straight years. i can only hope he falls that far, that would make tennessee one of the fastest teams in the business

at this point
it might take a miracle for heybey to still be around at 30.

Possibly.
But, if he’s not on the board, there is a good chance that Harvin will be. Not that it matters, I think we’ll draft d-line or corner.
That said, Charlie Casserly said at the combine today that he thinks Albert will remain in Tennessee. I wouldn’t put much faith in that, but I found it interesting nonetheless. IMO, he must stay if we have any chance at taking a WR in round one.
4.41 is fast.
I guess I just see all the receivers sliding after the news about Crabtree. I don’t see him going in the top 5 anymore and the rest of the receivers have enough question marks that they aren’t just going to “trade spots” with him. Ie, Heyward-Bey/Maclin/Harvin aren’t going to get picked up by the Seahawks.
4.41
is fast… Just not really fast. I still don’t see Crabtree falling. If so… Great for us! Maclin will run faster at his pro day most likely and that will put him in the 2nd WR slot. Harvin will still probably and hopefully go ahead of Heyward Bey. So in that case Bey should drop to us.

Deep receiver class gives me hope
I don’t think it will be that difficult to upgrade our current receivers in round 1 or 2. I am also encouraged that titans management has stated more than once they would like “more playmakers”….. they couldnt mean another running back playmaker…could they? lol.
Hey percy harvin and chris johnson and the wishbone! who knows.
I like DHB / NIcks / Britt / also Robiskie looks good at the combine as well. Possibly
some speedsters in the later rounds too.
Every pick is a risk….i say nevermind the past, sooner or later we’ll get a good kid. Keep trying!
Couldn't have
said it better myself
