Around SBN: Transfer Rumor: Bolton On Verge of First Signings

Thanks For Ruining My Day, Mike Reinfeldt****UPDATE: ESPN REPORTING THAT ESPN IS JUST EFFIN' GUESSING AGAIN*****

Epic_fail_medium

This report has now been denied by ESPN, McCareins' agent and the Titans.  I repeat: Justin McCariens is not a Titan.  The post, however, will be left-up for sheer comedic value.

Unbelievable.  Simply unbelievable:

Reliable wide receiver Justin McCareins... has re-signed with the Tennessee Titans.

McCareins signed a one-year contract for $730,000, precluding him from testing the free-agent market when it begins next Friday.

Since when did reliable become a synonym for horrible?  McCariens probably knocked 5-10% off of our 3rd down completion percentage on his own.  He better not make the roster at the end of training camp.

It is a good thing we locked him up

before he hit the market. Someone would have given him a lot of money…wait…nope…he is terrible. Good thing we are letting Albert go so we can keep McCareins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow.

But, because there appears to be no signing bonus, it shouldn’t count against the cap if we decide to cut him at the end of training camp, correct?

good point

base salary only hits if your active for game 1

Where I was raised 2 + 2 = 3rd and 6.

I really can’t believe McCareins can be this bad at his job and make $730,000 a year minimum while I am one bad performance review away from food stamps.

Hopefully

They will at least move Jones and Hawk above him. The only thing he is any good for is run blocking, and putting butter on my popcorn at the movies. I just wish he would wash his hands when he was done.

Since when did reliable become a synonym for horrible?

I don’t think it is, but these are:

abhorrent, abominable, appalling, awful, beastly, cruel, detestable, disagreeable, disgusting, dreadful, eerie, execrable, fairy, fearful, frightful, ghastly, grim, grisly, gruesome, heinous, hideous, horrendous, horrid, loathsome, lousy, lurid, mean, nasty, obnoxious, offensive, repellent, repulsive, revolting, scandalous, scary, shameful, shocking, sickie, terrible, terrifying, ungodly, unholy, unkind

I like unholy. As in “Justin McCareins’ play against the Texans was unholy.”

by gramsey712 on Feb 20, 2009 4:30 PM CST reply actions

Reinfeldt = failure?

The list of bad decisions is growing…

Drafting Chris Henry in the second round
Signing a washed-up Alge Crumpler
Signing (and now re-signing) Justin McCairens
Getting schooled in negotiations with Haynesworth’s agent last year and practically guaranteeing his departure
Dumping Roydell Williams like a piece of garbage when he deserved some team loyalty
Signing Mike Williams after he had already proven (repeatedly) to be a bust

Hitting the draft lottery jackpot with Chris Johnson does not erase these fuckups. Reinfeldt is a complete tool.

by BeansCarter on Feb 20, 2009 4:48 PM CST reply actions

I don't know if you can hold Roydell against him

Did he catch on anywhere else?

Yeah, I just checked

and Roydell is still out of the NFL—so those injury problems must have had something behind them.

by gramsey712 on Feb 20, 2009 4:56 PM CST up reply actions

IMHO

Roydell deserved a year on IR. He was our best receiver two years ago. But fair enough, it might have been more complicated than that.

by BeansCarter on Feb 20, 2009 5:14 PM CST up reply actions

I do agree that he stood out in 07.

I was definitely shocked when they cut him. It does surprise me that they are sticking with McSuckins and they wouldn’t take a flyer on Roydell.

There's been some good moves too

Not overpaying last year for Laboy and Odom, who we clearly demonstrably did not need.
Getting a good returner finally and moving us from bottom of league towards the top there.

I’m not sure how much the draft stuff drops on the GM one way or the other. Contract stuff, re-signings, FA signing yeah, but I’m not sure how much Renfeldt should get credit or egg either way for draft decisions…

by numbertenox on Feb 20, 2009 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

Are you sure?

Laboy had a solid season in Arizona. He outplayed Kearse (on a team with a crap D).

We also had the excess cap room to afford him. Kearse will retire soon, but Laboy should have a few good years in him. I don’t think that would have been “overpaying”.

As for draft stuff. Scouts report to the GM. He manages the entire information gathering process and is ultimately responsible for the decision. Obviously Fisher has a say, but MR is accountable.

Carr move was a good one. I’ll accept that.

by BeansCarter on Feb 20, 2009 5:19 PM CST up reply actions

Contra argument:

• Homerun pick on Crazy Legs
• Homerun pick on Michael Griffin
• Great early returns on Jason Jones
• Awesomely affordable extensions on young cornerstones like Finnegan, Bironas, D. Stewart and M. Roos
• Williams didn’t cost anything and was Norm’s pet project (whom Reese hired, btw)

Where I was raised 2 + 2 = 3rd and 6.

by August West on Feb 20, 2009 4:53 PM CST up reply actions

Griffin

I love CJ and Griff. No complaints there. At the same time, I expect 1st rounders to be great players. Anything less is disappointing.

Stewart and Roos got paid… Of course they could be viewed as “affordable”, because the Titans had so much unused money. They got big bucks though.

Bironas? 12 million for a kicker like him is market value. That’s an easy one, no?

Finnegan extension was savvy, because had they not done it, Finnegan would be much more expensive now.

Reinfeldt has indeed made some good moves, but he has made some really dumb ones too. 2007 draft was horrible; only players that have contributed so far are Ford and Griff. You need to hit on more than 2 players for success.

by BeansCarter on Feb 20, 2009 5:33 PM CST up reply actions

i think we got bironas at an awesome rate...

He would have gone to the pro bowl again if we put him in a few more clutch situations

by Michaeltastic on Feb 21, 2009 2:36 AM CST up reply actions

The value of the franchise tag for kickers in 2009 is a salary of US$2.48 million.

Bironas will earn 3 million per year, which makes him what, one of the top 3 highest paid kickers in football?

Too bad “clutch” Bironas went 1 for 2 in our playoff game. Another 3 points would have seen us in OT.

by BeansCarter on Feb 21, 2009 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

yeah...

but thats 1 out of how many times he’s come through

I guess

This just means he gets a shot in camp, not that they aren’t going to give him any competition. Still, finding this little gem a day or two after coming to terms with the fact that Albert is going to be walking is hard to take.

epic fail

sigh, oh tennesse, first you throw the playoff loss at us, now this? the only reason people know him is because he can’t catch for air and his route running is imlicably bad. please, dont make us wait any longer, draft a big time, bust free WR and get 1, just 1, super bowl ring for poor old man kerry collins and the boys back home.

oh and for the record...

they should have used that money to overpay travis laboy.

I agree.

He had a good year last year, much better than I thought he was going to have, but he isn’t a franchise player at all. In any given year, he’s easily replaced by a decent 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Honestly, I doubt he would’ve seen the field much last season. Seriously, who would he have bumped?

i'm not saying laboy isn't good

and i’m sure he would be very valuable to a lot of teams with weak d-lines. the titans however, can churn out a travis laboy anytime they feel like it. washburn is just that good.
