The Titans Free Agent Wide Receiver Woes

The Titans should be banned from ever signing free agent wide receivers.  Here are the numbers on the biggest three they have signed since the franchise moved to Tennessee:

Recsuck_medium

And this doesn't even address all of the failed draft picks before Kenny Britt came along..

The sad thing when you look at that is Nate Washington is going to easily have the best season of all (just think what his numbers would be if he could actually catch), but there is always some big if with the guys the Titans sign.

No real point to this post other than to depress you.

Indeed

Maybe this photo sums up his problem:

WHAT THE HELL IS HE LOOKING AT BECAUSE IT SURE AIN’T THE BALL

by TNTitans on Dec 8, 2009 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

I never got the Washington signing

His biggest problem in Pittsburgh was drops, which isn’t what you want from your deep threat.

by crazylegs28 on Dec 8, 2009 2:57 PM CST reply actions

I liked Washington at the time

because he gets great separation and has a #1 Receiver skillset. It just added more speed to a team with Chris Johnson at RB and now Vince at QB along with Scaife, Cook, and Britt. I felt like if he could do things like CATCh the ball he dropped in the Indy game, our offense would be really potent. Unfortunately, he isn’t catching those passes, and if he did our offense WOULD be really potent. It’s a shame. So far it has looked like a bad signing for the money he got. However, if he stops dropping, then all of a sudden it’s a good signing.

Vince just throws the ball too hard for his girlish hands to catch

why isn't this green?

Christie kicks it high and short...Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25...He dishes it back to Wycheck...He throws it across the field to Dyson...

Not much more reassuring....

WR’s with an equal or lower catch rate than Nate Washington (46%, by FO’s count) [I excluded guys not worth mentioning or not surprising]:

• Justin Gage (a putrid 42%)
• Eddie Royal
• Roy Williams
• Lee Evans
• Teddy Ginn
• Mark Clayton

I'll just start the nonsense train going now

We need to spend all of our money on Boldin.

Yeah..I know he’s aging…yeah…I know he’s injury prone.

I say nonsense because I know a lot of dissension will follow…

by earlers on Dec 8, 2009 4:31 PM CST reply actions

I don't think he's injury prone

I think he’s a badass who gets hurt because he puts his tail on the line for his team.

But that still doesn’t solve the problem that FRED GRAVES IS THE WORST POSITIONAL COACH IN THE LEAGUE. With 10.2% nationwide unemployment, it infuriates me that this man has a job. He has never done anything but make highly touted players worse.

Look around the league, explain to me how COURTNEY ROBY plays for the freakin’ SAINTS. After they cut BIREN freakin EALY for peeing on a fire hydrant.. Before that, Roby was on the COLTS. Why would the two best teams for WR in the league sign our refuse? How many more 3rd down drops before Graves gets fired??? I can’t take it anymore!

by joshuaboone on Dec 8, 2009 8:34 PM CST up reply actions

Roby plays for the Saints...

but in 11 games, he has 1 catch for six yards. Not exactly a diamond in the rough.

by DoofusOfErasmus on Dec 8, 2009 10:12 PM CST up reply actions

Roby is 14th in the league at returning kicks with a 27.5 yard average.

But…our own Kenny Britt is 3rd in the league with a 33.3 yard average.

Edison!!

I thought this kid showed promise in pre season…he looks like a bigger guy ..similar to guage and britt.

hell…bring back dudley guice next year too for another go.

by zero defects on Dec 8, 2009 6:31 PM CST reply actions

What the hell are they doing with Edison

He looked freaking brilliant in the preseason.

Anyone associated with wide receivers for the Titans, draft evaluation, position coaches, chauffeurs, food testers, whatever, should be let go and replaced with someone from an organization that knows better what the heck they are doing. That’s every single NFL franchise except detroit.

Britt is a rare gem in what has mostly been a sea of mediocrity year in and year out, and it worries me that somehow this most inept part of the Titans machine will manage to screw him up somehow.

by numbertenox on Dec 8, 2009 9:20 PM CST reply actions

what he said...

and….WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING WITH EDISON!! LOL

by zero defects on Dec 8, 2009 10:40 PM CST up reply actions

Marvin Harrison anyone?

Sure, he’s old and at the end of his career, but is there anyone who doubts he’d make an impact out on the field? Shooting incident aside, he demonstrated phenomenal poise and class in Indianapolis, and would instantly be better than anyone else in our lineup. Not to mention the added chip on his shoulder whenever we’d play the Colts.

by wildcat69410 on Dec 9, 2009 12:47 AM CST reply actions

helllllllllll noooooo

I’d hate for that to happen. Besides, we have the talent at WR to be successful..put Britt as #1, Gage at #2 (His catch always replays in my mind), and have Hawk/Ed/Nate Washout play the slot like in Pitts. I really like Hawk and Ed, its the coaching staff’s fault trying to force the issue with ‘veterans’. Football is all about playmakers.

Vince may not be the most accurate passer, but he makes PLAYS. CJ is the definition of ‘playmaker’. Britt, Big Bo Scaife, and Hood are as well, yet Fisher settles for Harper and Washout on the field.

I love Fisher to death, and I love that he called to go for it on those 4th down situations, but he has problems in judging talent on the field.

If he doesn’t like to put the best players on the field, then he should be the one to go.

So, so far that group has cost us

over $5M per TD. Hopefully, Nate can bring that cost down a lot over his contract.
