Tennessee Titans Morning Links: More Faceplam Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 /epic facepalm

Tennessee_titans_30x21 I don't know what Chuck Cecil said that provoked the 15 yard penalty, but it sounds like it must have been brutal.  As a fan of artistic profanity I'm dying to know what it was.  Fisher says he expects Cecil to be fined, but that the profanity was meant for the coaching staff over the headset, not for the official.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Understatement of the decade: "Titans defense has taken big step back".

Follow us through the jump for more links...

Star-divide

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Time to see how Vince Young holds up after a career-bad outing, and in a game where a lot of other guys will be scheduling tee-times.  It would be real easy to justify mailing this one in, but coming out and leading these guys with some fire is what the team really needs to see, IMO.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Javon Ringer talked with a MSU site about being a rookie, the pranks that come with it and learning from the NFL's most productive running back.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Gregg Bell tries earnestly to figure out if this Seahawks team, which has been blown out by Houston, Tampa and Green Bay on successive weekends, has given-up or if they're just that lacking in talent.  Hey, at least as bad as we were Sunday Friday, we didn't have to watch it in game after game after game.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Jim Mora is trying to keep his team focused on the final game of the season, which can't be an easy task on the heels of a 38 point loss last weekend.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Jim Mora might also want to be looking over his own back, even while he's trying to protect his players'.

Have love, need links because the coverage of the Titans has really dropped-off, people: mcmaugustwest@gmail.com.

the way hasselbeck is playing

everyone on the defense might get pick. 4 INTs in both of their last 2 games i believe. he’s no jake delhomme, but he’s working on it.

Okay...

let me get this straight. Hood has been INACTIVE the past few games, not even suiting up and Harper is finally out and Hood is not only activated but zooms to the top of the dept chart? So, if Harper went down in the game the guy who is now starting for him wasn’t even in pads? This makes absolutely no sense.

Someone please explain.

by Titan9 on Dec 29, 2009 10:40 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

the only excuse I've heard is that Hood doesn't play special teams

and CBs (especially non-starters) are always expected to contribute on kick/punt coverage. I don’t know if it’s that he refuses to, or he’s just terrible at it. If he refuses to, that could be why he kept getting cut, as most coaches probably wouldn’t take too kindly to such a demand/limitation from a guy they didn’t intend to be a starter.

funny thing is

he played special teams in the game against the 9ers.

2-R.Bironas kicks 66 yards from TEN 30 to SF 4. 24-M.Robinson to SF 30 for 26 yards (37-R.Hood).

I think it's a matter of who's BETTER at special teams...

When he was starting at CB, he didn’t have much choice but to play teams too. But when he is not needed to start, the rooks must be considered better at teams, and thus active on game day. So to sum up, Hood > Rooks @ CB but Hood < Rooks @ ST.

by TNTitan89 on Dec 29, 2009 1:08 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

gotcha

So there’s no one on the current active roster that was least important than Hood to at least put him in pads for insurance?

by Titan9 on Dec 29, 2009 10:53 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

not with the active roster limitations

I have not broken down the Titans active roster for each game, but typically the only player that doesnt do anything on the field during the game is the backup QB(s). Everybody else contributes on the field in some way.

You know what they could do?

Put Lavelle Hawkins in to return kicks/punts.

Send Pearman back to the Bedazzlers.

Activate Rod Hood.

Easy fix.

There has to be a reason why Hood bounces around the league

This must be the reason, the roster limitations make activiating someone just in case hard to justify.

looking for a job, for, how long was it, 6 weeks? Refuse to do special teams.

Agreed here Jimmy, he doesn’t refuse, maybe he just isn’t good @ ST, but just don’t make him play ST, only CB.

IR Nick Harper, and then have the rooks play ST

Cecil probably said something to the effect of...

Why didn’t you m@*#% f&^$!*& tell me that people throw short passes in this league?!?!?!?!
And I think Hood over Harper is a positive. I’ve watched both he and Griffin get burned a lot this season. I hope Griffin can bounce back.

Our defensive problems are huge

Harper is an easy target for the fans because we can all see him being picked on, but that is just the surface of the turd that is our defense. Griffin has played poorly most of the season, out of position and slow to react. No consistent pass rush, poor tackling, I could go on and on…

by Voluntitan23 on Dec 29, 2009 11:23 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

The biggest issue, by far, IMO is the defensive line.

Good defensive line play is what makes this defense hum. If you can’t get pressure with the front four, the rest of the defense doesn’t work. This front office needs to make a move to get either Julius Peppers or Richard Seymour in the offseason. We need a force on the defensive line that will command double teams if this defense is going to get better.

The secondary is bad, yes. However, we saw last year how a good defensive line makes their job easier. I don’t care how good you are at corner, if the QB has 5-6 seconds to get the ball out on every play you’re going to get picked on.

by SuperHorn on Dec 29, 2009 12:22 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

To me, the biggest problem is...

our dbs…if you’ve got dbs on your team that afraid to make a big hit…then they need to take up ballet & get out of football altogether.

by titansfan4ever on Dec 29, 2009 12:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think hitting is the problem

The guys in our secondary can hit. It’s stopping receivers from catching passes that seems to be more the problem.

Defensive problems

Chris Hope has lost a few steps. I don’t care what you say, but I remember couple a years back, a receiver fell down purposely because they didn’t want to get hit by him ( Raiders I believe ), now they want 1 on 1 with him. Him and Nick Harper get beat more often then not. Nick Harper is flat out awful, as everyone here knows. Michael Griffin has taken a step back from last year, but he will fix that. Focus on the mechanics of being a free safety, not a run plugger. Cortland Finnegan was good, but Christmas night, sorry to say, got shown up.

Linebackers, we have fantastic potential with Tully and McGrath, those two can be great together. We really need to re-sign Keith Bulluck. He has NOT lost a step, works his ass off, is a perfect example of a role model in our society, and always expects 100% out of his defensive teammates, let alone the entire team.

Defensive line, Tony Brown is a good defensive tackle. He is always playing hard, he has great technique, and he stops the run beautifully. Work more on the pass-rush, and re-sign this guy. He will be great. Jason Jones, love him, but pack on a few more pounds, work your ass off this offseason, and prepare for your biggest year yet. He will shine in ‘10. Jacob Ford and William Hayes are both outstanding young potential guys. William is great at both the run and the pass. I remember watching him last year, and while playing Defensive End in high school, I knew the one simple rule for defensive end, that is BCR. Back-Counter-Reverse. Last year, anytime a team ran misdirection, ie Reverse, this cat would bite on it and get his ass simple ran around. That simply is just not the case this year. He became smart, physical, and an all around GOOD defensive End. He had the best strides this year, along with Tulloch. Kyle Vandenbosh, I love him and all, but if his asking price is ridiculous, let him go. SURE he gets pressure on the quarterback, but most of the time, a non-mobile Peyton Manning, and even Phillip Rivers, simply can just take a step and Kyle falls to the ground. Disappointing at best. He is great at stopping the run, and I think we DO need a guy like him to stay in the locker room, and show younger guys what it takes to be good in this league. Kevin Vickerson can be a player. He is huge, he is physical, but I just see him needing to get stronger. His Technique is there, and he uses his hands well. Senderick Marks, I watched a play, against the Bills, when Sen’Derrick bullrushed the right guard to the ground. ( Didn’t get a sack ) but That right there, gave me HOPE, in the future of this defensive line. Last but not least, who in the hell signed Dave Ball to this team. He is a shrimp, he is NOT strong, and he is always on the ground. Either that, or he is the Lamont Thompson of the defensive line, running to the ball and trying to get in on a gang tackle. Get rid of Dave Ball. Javon Haye, this is the biggest disappointment of all. I remember when Albert Haynesworth was going to be a FA, I was looking at other FA’s to be, and saw Javon Haye. My gut told me we would pursue him, and I was ecstatic when we actually did. Boy am I not now. He doesn’t play the run well, and he does NOT push the pocket at all. He needs to work extra hard this offseason, cause buddy, we got better younger talent upcoming. Overall, lack of push in the pocket, because the ends ARE getting pressure on the outside, is what hurt us most this season. Get a big boy alongside Tony Brown ( who we hopefully will re-sign ), and collapse the pocket like we did when Haynesworth was here. Good things will happen.

i don't doubt he would be good

but when he told the panthers to piss off before they franchised him, he specifically said he wanted to go to a 3-4 to extend his career. so i assume he still feels that way. even if he would be willing to come here, with his new pro bowl bonus, that dude made $18.2 million this year, which is completely absurd considering we could have kept albert for less.

of course Albert was selfish.

I just thought I would get bashed for saying it. and I didn’t say he would be a cancer, I just have to go with what he did this offseason, basically saying hell-no to anything Carolina gave to him. You think Tennessee will pony up more than Carolina would? Heaven’s no. Results do matter, but they aren’t happenin’ in Tennessee.
