Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Pining For #53 Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 It makes me sick to my stomach thinking about the fact that even if we make it to the playoffs, Bulluck won't be out there.  I can't even think about the idea that we may have seen the last of him as a Titans right now.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Much as I suspected, Jamie Winborn will mostly play special teams on Sunday, though he could contribute at linebacker if required.  He'll probably get more run there next week, as it's almost impossible to pick-up an NFL system on this short of a week.  Collin Allred will start along with Tulloch, and Keglar will be the first man off the bench.  I'm still expecting to see more Vinny Fuller than usual though.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Here's the token Chris Johnson profile from a San Diego beat writer, but I did especially like this passage:

"A lot of guys come up to me right after the game and mention that," said Johnson yesterday via phone from Nashville. "They say they (weren’t) gonna let me break off any runs, not gonna let me beat them, that they were gonna make somebody else beat them."

So how’s that working out?

Follow us through the jump....

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Terry McCormick takes a look at the updated Titans playoff picture.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Mike Lombardi takes a look at the controversy over the timeouts at the end of regulation last week, and comes away appreciating both points of view.  He makes another good point that I hadn't thought of either (but completely agree with): Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter is a deadly long-range kicker, so a big play by the 'phins was even more of a danger.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Nope, still not saying anything good about the guy.

Sorry
Why no timeout here by the Titans? They had three of them remaining…. But having seen the Dolphins make a great play to wide receiver Brain Hartline, I’m sure the Titans would rather take their chances in overtime than give up a deep ball.

You run that play nine more times and Griff picks it off all 9. That was a fluke, not a “great play to (4th-round draft pick rookie) wide receiver BRAIN Hartline.”

Sorry, still not buying it. Hindsight is 20-20 and all that, but if your defense is gassed, calling the timeout is another opportunity to rally the troops and give everybody a quick breather.

Good grief.

“He makes another good point that I hadn’t thought of either (but completely agree with): Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter is a deadly long-range kicker, so a big play by the ’phins was even more of a danger.”—-

Fisher screwed up. He didn’t even know how many TOs the Dolphins had left, and the Dolphins forfeited their first play with a stuff-up-the-middle. The only other point of view is the one that fears calling Fisher on anything he does wrong.

It was an impossibly hard situation from that point for the Dolphins, and they were playing for OT, not the winning FG. It was a great opportunity for any team in the Titans’ position. Had they used the TOs to force the Dolphins to get a First down, some time would have still elapsed, and the Dolphins would have still likely played for OT even if they got ALLLLL the way out to the 19 yard line or so.

It was classic Fisher, playing not to lose (like he did in the whole Fourth quarter) instead of playing to win. He followed that brilliant decision by shutting down the offense in OT with three jams into an eight-man front for negative yardage, making the classic Fisher mind-numbing decision that even trying for a first down is an exponentially greater risk that kicking the 45+ yard FG (that no kicker EVER misses, of course).

There’s a reason Sunday’s game looked like every playoff game we’ve played in the last decade. It’s because the moment there begins to be something to possibly play for again – like an outside shot at the playoffs – Fisher goes back from “nothing to lose” mode, where we are open and creative and fun, to “fraidy Fisher” mode, where he has time and again proven himself to be the second coming of Marty Schottenheimer. The moment there’s a chance at the playoffs or we’re in a playoff game, there’s no point to the Titans having an offensive coordinator anymore, and we’re going to see the defense put on the field at EVERY POSSIBLE opportunity, even if our QB is on fire and the defense has just been shredded like old cheese. We stop trying to win games, and spend the second half trying not to lose, while running the offense like it’s an automatic that we’re going to turn the ball over every time we try to get a first down.

Face it, August – Jeff Fishenheimer had a MISERABLE coaching day on Sunday. Any excuses are based in one’s predeliction towards Fisher, not an objective look at the situations.

Here ya go:
Fisher screwed up. He didn’t even know how many TOs the Dolphins had left, and the Dolphins forfeited their first play with a stuff-up-the-middle. The only other point of view is the one that fears calling Fisher on anything he does wrong.

That’s just absurd. I’ve hammered Fisher when I though he needed. Saying I’m in his pocket is just as dumb as thinking Fisher can’t look at a scoreboard. Just because he misspoke in the press conference doesn’t mean it’s dogma.

It was an impossibly hard situation from that point for the Dolphins, and they were playing for OT, not the winning FG.

So do you know what number Tony Sporano is thinking of too? The situation probably would have changed if we start giving them timeouts. They didn’t give-up on first down, they were trying to get out of danger of losing the game on a safety because they were on their own 2 yard line. if we call a timeout I have no doubt that they come out throwing.

It was classic Fisher, playing not to lose…

Come on now, do you really think on offense they were calling plays NOT to get the first down? Vince kept going to his checkdowns, and CJ was getting stuffed like he was most of the half.

… making the classic Fisher mind-numbing decision that even trying for a first down is an exponentially greater risk that kicking the 45+ yard FG (that no kicker EVER misses, of course).

You can do these things when Big Kick Rob is your kicker. Do I love it? No. Does it work 95% of the time? Yup.

There’s a reason Sunday’s game looked like every playoff game we’ve played in the last decade.

Didn’t look squat like the Ravens or Chargers’ losses… didn’t look like the 2000 Ravens loss either. The only one this looked like was the Steelers game we won on Nedney’s acting ability.

The moment there’s a chance at the playoffs or we’re in a playoff game, there’s no point to the Titans having an offensive coordinator anymore

FAIL. Last year we ran all over the Ravens, even after CJ went out, due to good calls from ’Dinger and a great game by Gage. Kerry threw for almsot 300 yards on the best defense in the league with no real run threat. The reason we lost were brutal fumbles by Alge and LenDale, helped by some bad breaks from the refs.

good stuff.

i also believe that if we start the time out game, sparano or as the commentator called him “soprano” (dont know if anybody caught that) would have took it as an opportunity. with the clock stopped i once again believe that he would have tried to air it out, as much as ppl talk about how easy it is to pass on our secondary especially harp, why wouldnt an NFL coach think the same way. and what if the dolphins do make a big play, we didnt have bull in on coverage, and all the momentum would have shifted their way. and there is a huge chance they get in decent ranger for a kick.

That's not relevant.

I don’t think it’s important to make that distinction. Here’s why:

The Dolphins are backed up on their 6 yard line. By not calling the timeouts, you’re electing to go into overtime. 50% of the time the Dolphins are going to get the ball, and 99% of the time they will have better field position.

Read this. The expected point value from inside your own 10 is LESS THAN ZERO. Add in that there was little time on the clock, and that figure is likely to get even worse. If we lose a coin toss and kick to them, chances are they’ll get the ball around the 20 or better. Getting the ball from that place on the field gives an expected point value of more than zero.

Beyond that, the net punt distance when you have that much field to work with, is ~40 yards on average. Which is to say that if we could get a stop on third down, we’re getting the ball back at the 50. I like our chances to score in that scenario much more than I do if we win the coin toss and get it near the 20.

I think it’s much less risky to call the timeouts and force a team to get a first down at the risk of a long gain than it is to play for overtime. If you’re worried about your defense getting a stop, I’d much rather put them in a position where the pressure is on the offense backed up against their goal line.

all good points

i’m just sick of all the anti-fisher hyperbole as of late. there are plenty of things to criticize him about without journeying into the “he misspoke so he must be a MORAN” area of stupidity.

not calling anyone an idiot

but that line of criticism is definitely idiotic. say what you want about fisher but he and the entire coaching staff eats sleeps and breathes this stuff. there is no way in this world that fisher was paying so little attention as to not notice them take timeouts or that he forgot to check the scoreboard. it is irritating when people latch onto some little insignificant thing and try to act like it’s a big deal and repeat it over and over again, like jerseygate.

We'll have to agree to disagree

At some point, one has to stop giving Fisher the benefit of the doubt.

I (and others) have reached that point. You have not. We are at, what the MORAN French like to call, an impasse.

by TNTitans on Dec 23, 2009 11:21 AM CST up reply actions   3 recs

Look

If you want to give him the benefit of the doubt and say “Oh he misspoke” fine.

But what he actually said was that they had three timeouts. I’m not some magical mind reader that can tell when the guy used the wrong word and when he was just wrong.

And, with the plethora of boneheaded mistakes Fisher has made this season, I refuse to give him the benefit of the doubt.

by TNTitans on Dec 23, 2009 10:44 AM CST up reply actions

Even then, it doesn't matter.

With a full set of time outs, it’s still VERY difficult to get into field goal range in one minute. The amount of time outs shouldn’t have influences Fisher’s decision.

by SuperHorn on Dec 23, 2009 10:53 AM CST up reply actions

Still think you're wrong.

That’s fine. But, I like my odds better of them throwing from their 5 yard line and giving our defense the task of stopping them, than putting it to a coin flip and risking putting our defense in a worse situation.

What they choose to do on those three downs isn’t relevant. They are in a position that’s difficult on any offense. I just don’t see them moving the ball 75 yards in that short of a time period. Those odds seem A LOT slimmer than a three and out, in which case we’d be in an excellent position to win the game in regulation.

Come on now, do you really think on offense they were calling plays NOT to get the first down? Vince kept going to his checkdowns, and CJ was getting stuffed like he was most of the half.

There’s an enormous difference between playing for first downs and trying to milk the clock vs. trying to put points on the board as quickly as possible. I know you’re a smart guy August, and don’t believe that you didn’t see the difference. Yeah, VY was checking down, but I didn’t see him making any deep reads on vertical routes either. Since Vince has been in, it appears that his reads are almost always deep to short. So, if there is a deep read, you’ll see him looking down field first. He didn’t do that AT ALL in the fourth quarter.

by SuperHorn on Dec 23, 2009 10:51 AM CST up reply actions

Hey, I'm not a fan of some things that went on in the 4th

but my original point was about the time-outs issue, and I still think people hammering Fisher for that are going WAYYYY overboard.

You can say you would have done different with that situation, but folks have to realize that it wasn’t that cut and dry. It’s not black and white like the Harper/Hood travesty.

Music City Miracles blogger and official Jon Bovi tour manager.

by August West on Dec 23, 2009 11:03 AM CST up reply actions

and we didn't need to be putting up points quickly

we’d just given up TD drives for 80 and 90 yards, lost Bulluck and Boom King, and had a completely gassed defense.

Another point, calling a time-out wasn’t going to help the D recover. A TO is only going to give you two minutes. they needed the 10-15 it took to end regulation, flip the coin, cover the kick-off and go through a few TV timeouts.

Music City Miracles blogger and official Jon Bovi tour manager.

by August West on Dec 23, 2009 11:06 AM CST up reply actions

Yes. We did need to put up points quickly.

Because, quick points in a short period of time is better than no points in a longer period of time, which is what happened.

And, to be clear, I’m talking about the offensive gameplan from mid third quarter on. Fish/Dinger just shut down the vertical passing game, which was working extremely well. They tried to play not to lose.

But, back to the main point here, I really think not using time outs at the end of the game is a microcosm of Fisherball. It just feels like a team playing scared. It sends a message to your players that, I don’t believe you can stop a team from marching 50+ yards. And, a message to the offense that if you get the ball back, you don’t think they can move it 15 yards in 50 seconds.

That’s a losers mentality.

by SuperHorn on Dec 23, 2009 11:17 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I'm with SuperHorn moreso than August, although I agree the ciriticism of Fisher for the 3 timeouts thing is ridiculous and annoying

The thing that angers me about Fisherball is that it only works with a certain type of team. Strong defense (top 5 or better), good running game, and a Quarterback who avoids turnovers and hits short receivers accurately.

Right now, we are the exact opposite of that team.

1) As SuperHorn has said, Vince has been deadly with the deep ball, and he was on fire in this game specifically. However, in the one area he has “struggled” this year is short throws against a compact defense. Example being the Red Zone. Well, the way the Titans called plays, they basicially allowed Miami’s defense to remain compact by completely stopping all deep routes from about 5 minutes into the 3rd Quarter. That is playing to Vince’s weaknesses. Stupid.

2) Chris Johnson is not a grinder. I’m not saying he can’t handled 28 carries, because he can. But he isn’t gonna get 3 yards a career every time. This isn’t the type of Runningback you want to try to run the clock out. So either bring LenDale in, or run the offense the way that has led Chris Johnson to being successful.

3) Our defense is not a Fisherball defense. When things start falling apart for them, they give up big chunks of yardage fast. If Miami can do what they did, then anybody can. To try to let the defense control and win the game is a sign of sticking to a strategy regardless of your soldiers, and that’s beyond stupid. Several coaches do it. The Steelers have had similar problems this year. Regardless, it’s really, really dumb.

To me, the Titans went away from their strengths out of fear. Fisher is not used to letting the offense carry the team. The one year he did it was Steve McNair’s MVP year, and he had several years of trust built up with McNair. He obviously doesn’t trust Vince to that degree yet. BUT for this team to be successful this year and next, he will need to in a hurry, because this defense will get worse before it gets better.

Whether Fisher likes it or not, we are an offensive football team and his strategy needs to begin to reflect that, or we will be 7-7 next year as well.

Because coaches, as a whole, are arrogant pricks who with success believe in their system over players

Mike Shanahan thought he could plug in Danny the Janitor and gain 1,000 yards because of his zone blocking scheme.

Bill Belichick thought he could win with a defense that had an average age of 80 years old.

Mike Holmgren thought he could be just as good without Brett Favre.

Jon Gruden thought he could win with any Quarterback.

Rex Ryan thought he could beat anybody and specifically shut the Wildcat down with his “amazing complex blitzes”.

Jeff Fisher is thinking he can play Fisherball with any type of personnel on defense.

Almost, if not all, successful coaches fall into the trap at some point. They think their system makes the players, not the players make the system. The really successful ones learn how to adapt their system to the players they have. We now have to see if Fisher is able to do it. He did it once. Let’s hope he can do it again.

And further more

Yep lots of valid points but one I didnt hear was this apparent philosophy Titans seem to have had with Fisher where we hardly ever draft ready to play players. Of course we have hit the jackpot over the years on a player here or there but the majority are just throwaway picks or 4 year projects that end up producing late in their 4 years and cost too much to keep once they hit the open market. I realize Fisher isn’t the GM but I know he has a say so and has a hand in these selections. I have been a staunch suppoter of JF but this year seems different. Too many
questionable decisions he’s made for my liking. I.E. disregarding a veteran returner using a rookie,Not turning to Vince Young until being forced to( IMO may cost a playoff spot), Refusing to accept the truth in regards to Rod Hood over Harper, Mismanaging end of Miami game. Just a few off the top. How many years and talented teams does this guy need before we win a Superbowl? If we don’t finish at least 9-7(playoffs or not) it may be time to say goodbye. “46”

Maybe the knee injury helps keep him around. How many teams are going to offer up a large contract to a 10-yr vet coming of re-constructive knee surgery? This may provide the opportunity for a 1-yr incentive-laden deal.

The best thing that can happen is to BENCH HARPER AND PLAY HOOD…but I digress. I’m not so sure we’ll have as much trouble against the run with new LBs as the trouble we’ll have with our regular pass defense against “The Douche” passing it to the right every other play (also know as “Harper’s Giveaway Alley”).

Maybe BUT,

With the amount of wind necessary to give us that kind of advantage, it would make it way too easy to predict VY. Sure we’d still have to option with CJ, but they could stack the line on most plays.

As I’m typing this, I’m almost thinking you’re still right. Even if they stop CJ most of the time, if we run CJ 30 or more times he’s bound to break another long one. And then there’s VY keeping the option. Or throwing screen passes to reduce wind impact………….I don’t have a clue what will happen. Maybe wind would be our friend afterall.

Then again, SD might not even play starters and we breeze through this week. If that happens this week and next week and we get into the playoffs, our LBs will be back into the swing of it for the Wild Card game.

PS

I just got a strong wind advisory on my iPhone for Thursday and Friday let’s hope it will stick!

For my own sanity's sake

Being in row DD of the upper deck, I really can’t get behind a strong wind advisory.

It’s maddening enough trying not to feel like I’m going to fall off the face of the earth if I stand up to quickly WITHOUT a 30 mph wind to help carry me someplace upriver.

WOW!!

dude that is the funniest thing I have read today. Thanks for the laugh!!

by studiocat on Dec 23, 2009 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so sick of all the “chargers” love being thrown around. No one is giving us a shot. We are more than underdogs in this game. They are looking at us pure “fodder” for the “elite” MVP Rivers.

i’m gonna hurl…..

Line on the game. Titans by three.

And, I’ve said this before, when a line seems fishy like that, Vegas knows something. On top of that, the line opened at -2.5 and moved to -3.0 which generally means sharps and the betting public is getting in on the Titans.

by SuperHorn on Dec 23, 2009 12:11 PM CST up reply actions

Even Vegas knows what will happen....

we are going to run the ball ALOT….long, time consuming drives that eat the clock…keeping the ball out of Rivers’ hands….when he does have it, blitz the crap out of him…keep them from getting 1st downs & keep them off of the scoreboard. Hey, I can dream can’t I?

I feel a Music City Miracle coming on.

It’s Christmas, for X’s sake.

This one's for you, #9.

I'll tell what a miracle is....

starting 0-6…then winning 7 of your next 8….now that’s a friggin miracle!!!

by titansfan4ever on Dec 23, 2009 12:35 PM CST up reply actions

Most important thing for Titans......

No friggin turnovers! If we can avoid these damn fumbles we keep having lately,We have an excellent chance to win this game even shorthanded. It seems like everyone else in the league has backups on defense that step up when starters go down. Time for this team to do the same. “46”

I remember the last Christmas game for the Titans.

Billy Volek and Drew Bennett lit up the scoreboard.

Maybe VY and CJ will do the same….except win this time around.

by asian phil on Dec 23, 2009 1:00 PM CST reply actions

Actually...

That was the week the Billy and Drew show stopped. Volek was 8 of 20 for 111 yards and 2 picks, Bennett caught 2 for 26, and Doug Johnson (whose existence I had largely managed to repress) came on in relief. The Broncos ended up with like 11 sacks and won 37-16. But, y’know, Ben Troupe did hurdle a guy that game.

by NewsToTom on Dec 23, 2009 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

You're right.

Didn’t Volek have like a 4 game streak of 400 yard games then that game it stopped. All I can remember was that it was wet and cold that Christmas day.

And I forgot all about Doug Johnson being on the team. Wheres Neil O’donnell when you need him?

by asian phil on Dec 23, 2009 2:28 PM CST up reply actions

I remember that game against the Broncos x-mas 04’ we gave up 6 sacks and Volek threw 2 ints. Doug Johnson(yuck) had to replace him because he stunk up the joint. You are probably referring to the game Volek & Bennett had against the Colts “46”

The game you are thinking of

is this one. It was a Monday Night and was really, really cold. Fun game though..

Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.

"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.
