BFTB Answers Your Chargers Questions
Hey fellas. John here from Bolts From The Blue, offering my services as a "Chargers expert" to answer any questions you guys have going into this game. Put your questions in the comments section and I'll be back often to answer them.
Please Rec this post to keep it at the top of the FanPosts, and keep the trash-talking to the minimum (that's not why I'm here).
Also, if you're wondering what my feeling is for this game...I'm clueless. The Chargers might give up 5 TDs to Chris Johnson and then score 5 with their passing offense. Actually, that's probably the best prediction I could make. Winner is whoever the refs like better.

Charger fans dont talk mess anymore after that Raiders fan stabbed that guy, wish I could find that vid.
I was stationed in CA, and got to go to alot of charger games while I was out there and even when the game is close, 2 minutes to go, SD on D I could have a nice convo on my cell with noone yelling in my ear.

Because our run defense has been poor all season, especially on runs to the outside. We’re all terrified that CJ is going to break the record for the most yards in one game, which is currently held by Adrian Peterson (who did it against SD).
Also, our fans are smarter than that.

Confidence.
I don’t believe there are many Charger fans who don’t think their team will win this game. This game is more important to the Titans than to the Chargers. In all honesty, I think most fans see this is as just a speed bump on the way to a bigger goal. Also, we REALLY think the Titans are a dirty team and we’re more concerned about cheap shots and injuries than who is the better team.

Hey, calm down.
The air over at BFTB is one of guarded optimism. We think these are two very good teams, but naturally we think the Chargers are better and are in position to exploit Tennessee’s key weaknesses (namely the passing game, especially with your stud ‘backer Bulluck hurt). We’re also hoping to get out of this game without any of our stars suffering injuries, either because it’s football and that’s what happens, or because the Titans are physical bordering on dirty. (Not a fan of Jeff Fisher and his alleged “bounty” against Merriman, needless to say.)

Clearly we don’t see eye to eye, yes, I expected that. There is a history between these teams. When I came over here, I expected to talk with some Titans fans and help John field questions. and I like it when other sites come over here to do these questions. John has had very good answers, and has dealt with the negativity that inherently comes from a blog in an amazing fashion. However, the first stone in this thread, not in this post, was by a chargers fan. By someone who created an account just to antagonize. Also, your answered question included accusing Fisher of putting out a “bounty,” which is an arguable and opinionated topic at best. That seems like content you could have easily omitted if you were just trying to “field a question.”

Okay, okay, it was uncalled for.
Overall, the feeling I was going for is that Merriman seems to hold Fisher responsible for ordering the chop block that injured him in 2007. This is not my business to judge. However, other players (most vocally Rodney Harrison— who is a former Charger, so this might not be unbiased) have fingered Fisher as the dirtiest coach in the league.
I didn’t come on this board to troll and argue and bitch over every petty thing. Please excuse my rudeness, and I wish you all a good game and happy holidays.

i think he was saying
get me some mf’n takeout. this games over!
"hey, quit reading these ridiculous words of wisdom and get back to work!"
Dirty play
The rumors about Fisher ordering the hits are clearly hearsay. However, anyone that watched that game could tell they were going after Merriman. Ben Hartsock was penalized on a crackback block where we he was running perpendicular to the line of scrimmage and had a clear shot directly at Merriman. That hit separated Merriman’s feet from the ground and was only possible due to the completely illegal angle Ben took towards him. It was one of the most blatant examples of cheap play I’ve ever seen and he should have been ejected for it. Then, Mawae and Stewart both get fines for late hits, again directed at Merriman. Call that what you will. But I call two hits after the whistle and one hit on an illegal play DIRTY. But, you know… I’ve only posted on here a few times so I obviously know nothing about the game of football.
So, just because you get all pissy in your pants and call people who have more football knowledge about your own team trolls, doesn’t mean your team doesn’t have players who are downright dirty. And I think by any objective measure, I’ve just demonstrated your team was targeting Merriman OUTSIDE of the rules of the game of football.
So, to summarize the point I initially made that got your collective panties in a wad, Charger fans are (were) justified in worrying more about injuries on cheap shot plays than actually losing to your pathetic team. To be honest with you… I really thought your team would play better with their entire season on the line. Maybe the refs told them before the game they’d be watching the dirty play and that’s what Jeff Fisher game planned for the entire week. But, that’s just hearsay…

wrong
hartsock was penalized for illegal procedure because he was moving toward the line of scrimmage. the hit was totally legal, as well as freaking awesome. crack back block has absolutely nothing to with that play, but explaining something like that to some one like you would be a complete waste of time. merriman cheap shotted vince, so fisher sent a completely legal and clean message with no intent to injure. merriman got his clock cleaned because he is a dog shit human being. deal with it.

i figured were all best summed up in “dog shit human being”. good luck to the chargers going forward, but i hope merriman falls in a hole. with spikes at the bottom. mortal combat style.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Exactly
It was an illegal move he made towards the line of scrimmage. Yes, that was my point. Merriman never expected anyone to come at him at that angle. As a direct result of Hartsock running straight towards the line of scrimmage (that’s what one might call running perpendicular to it), he had an unfair advantage and Merriman wasn’t expecting the hit coming from that angle. If he was running parallel to the line (as he should have been) there’s no way Hartsock makes that hit. Basically, he takes a penalty in order to make a blindside hit. That is the exact reason why they blow the whistle when a player runs unabated to the quarterback. Again, I call that dirty play.
“merriman got his clock cleaned because he is a dog shit human being.” Now that’s class. Vince Young ran into Merriman on that hit. Merriman didn’t let up, but if you look at the clip, VY initiated contact.
i'm not gonna waste my time giving you an 8th grade geometry lesson
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Please don't embarrass yourself further.
Obviously, you don’t know the difference between perpendicular and parallel. Running perpendicular to the line of scrimmage would be running TOWARDS the line (illegal). +
Running parallel to the line of scrimmage would be running ALONG the line (legal). =
I know, you must have had trouble with the word problems in school, right?
alright fucktard, if you really want me to make you look even dumber
perpendicular means two lines which meet at a perfect 90 degree angle. if you want to say he wasn’t moving parallel, that is true, but at no point was he moving toward the line scrimmage so that his path would intersect the line of scrimmage at a 90 degree angle (i.e. moving perfectly straight up field). he was moving parallel along the line until the last moment when he started to run slightly towards the line of scrimmage at maybe a 10-20 degree angle, which counts as illegal procedure, which was the penalty. intersecting is not the same thing as perpendicular. ask a 12 year old if you don’t believe me.
therefore perpendicular is completely wrong, just like your bullshit about crack back blocks, and you are a dumbass, again. please make some more fun of my schooling. it’s entertaining when complete shitheads flaunt their mountainous ignorance about everything.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.

I have a degree in chemical engineering from Berkeley. I’m pretty fucking familiar with what the difference between perpendicular and parallel lines are.
We thought our team would play better, also.
They didn’t, and many of us congratulated John and Co. over here after the game. SD is putting it all together and has a great shot at getting to the Super Bowl.
Now, a troll is someone who writes inflammatory, unprovoked and debatable crap on a message board in order to illicit an emotional response from the other members. I understand you know football. That is not the issue. Merriman is no angel. He started whatever went down with a cheap late hit on VY, injuring him. Anything after that at best could be seen as emotional football players sending a message, again, AFTER your guy started the cheap, OUTSIDE the rules of football, shit. But see, this is all debatable and would require a long, emotional debate that noone wants here or on the SD blog. Furthermore, this year’s game went off w/o incident, putting to rest any bad blood that you or your team may have felt existed. Despite that, you have further proven your trollness by now returning to our Titan’s blog two days after a game in which your team decisively won to once again antagonize the fan base of the team yours beat despite our kind words of congratulations, etc.
So, next time you sign up on another team’s blog and start commenting, please show a little respect. Or get the hell out of here.

Absolutely
I made a point after the Bengals game to say that Norv is on his way to being the greatest coach in Chargers history. In his three seasons he’s lost zero playoff games and has won the division each time. He has the best winning percentage of any Chargers coach and I believe he has the best playoff winning percentage as well.
Do we look at him and expect a championship? No, but we know he’s capable of getting us there and we believe with enough patience he will. Right now I’d put him on a level with Sean Peyton, who everybody seems to love.
I really don’t understand why Norv is looked at as a laughing stock. Because he couldn’t turn the Raiders around?

I actually agree, I think he is underrated
I don’t consider him a top 5 coach in the NFL or anything, but I don’t think he is Wade Phillips either. We have seen since his firing with the Redskins that NOBODY can turn that around and the Raiders are the Raiders.
However, I assume it’s a mistake to say he has lost zero playoff games, because then that would mean the Chargers have won the past 3 Super Bowls.

Personally, in the post season, I don’t think Norv panics like Marty, obviously, used to. Norv won two Super Bowls calling plays for Dallas. The guy has been there before, felt the pressure, and delivered. I view him as an asset in the playoffs. Marty 0-2. Norv 3-2. (If LT, Gates, Merriman, and Rivers aren’t ALL hurt during the AFC Championship game, his post season record easily could be 5-1 with one ring).

Philip Rivers
Seems to me that P-Riv is one of the more underated upper-echelon QBs in the NFL right now. We hear so much in the news about Romo, Rapelisberger, and Warner, and yet Rivers has more yards and TDs than any of those dudes (technically he’s tied with Warner with 25 TDs but you get the idea).
What do you see as Rivers’ biggest weakness? Can you beat him with blitzes? How does Antonio Gates figure into the equation (as an outsider looking in, I’d say he’s having a career year, no?)
The beauty of playing in sleepy San Diego. It doesn’t hurt that Rivers really doesn’t want to be a celebrity.
Hold on, let me find this article from earlier this week….
But Rivers is excellent when under siege — a 101.5 passer rating this season, fifth-best among NFL starting quarterbacks, and he has a 100.5 career rating against the blitz as a starter. His rating this season when not blitzed is 105.1; it’s 93.8 for his career.
Here’s the link. The reason Rivers has the 2nd highest passer rating of all time (behind only Steve Young) is because he really has no flaws or weaknesses. The only way to stop him is to sack him.
However, if you can get consistent pressure on him with you four-man rush (as the Cowboys and Bengals both were able to do), you can force him into throw the occasional ugly interception. The great thing about Philip though, is since that has been in issue in the past two games I’ll sure he’ll spend extra time in practice reminding himself to throw those passes away and it won’t be an issue again Tennessee.

Forgot the second part of your question. Yes, Gates is having a career year. It’s partly because he’s been playing injured the past two season (and needed to get smarter, train harder) and is now healthy, but the bigger part is that Vincent Jackson has become an elite WR.
Earlier in the season Gates worked as the decoy to free up Jackson. After a few games of that, Jackson started taking the double (and triple) coverage which free’d up Gates for several huge games. Now they flip back and forth several times during the course of the game. Rivers simply sees who isn’t being double-teamed and throws the ball that way. It works nicely.

One more for the road
Who’s the one guy (offense or defense or two guys) that Titans fans have never heard of that we should know about?
Offense – Mike Tolbert. A bowling ball of a FB, with soft hands, unbelievable speed and the strength to be the goal line RB as well. After bursting out with a couple of huge games, he’s been quiet in the past two. I personally think Norv doesn’t trust him to not fumble the ball, which means he gets less touches in close games. I think he’s bound to make a big impact in Friday’s game though.
Defense – Brandon Siler. An absolute beast against the run up the middle. He can blow up any play at any time. He hits like a ton of bricks and plays best in the clutch. Look for him to be hitting Johnson hard all game.

We're hoping Harper and Finnegan can't hang with Jackson and Floyd.
After a down year last year, Gates has had one of the best seasons ever by a Chargers tight end (yes, including Kellen Winslow in 1981). He simply can’t be stopped across the middle, and if you double him, Rivers will check down to Sproles or LT or air it out towards one of his big wide recievers.

LB coverage on WR's
John, I don’t think they should be lined up on them at all unless theres a heavy blitz with double zones. You mentioned that Rivers has a very high rating when blitzed. Another reason he’s so good under pressure isn’t just his accuracy, its that he has quite possibly the fastest release in the league. Rivers can get a pass off very quickly, and he’s surprisingly accurate when throwing on the move, considering he’s as mobile as John Elway wearing oversized boots on a muddy heinz field. In order to force a rare Rivers mistake, pressure needs to arrive ASAP (as in a free runner up the middle) and Coverage needs to be tight. One thing that doesn’t work well is Press Coverage. Jackson is too physical to be slowed down by press, and Floyd brushes it off fairly quickly. Gates is somewhere in between. I agree very much with John about Brandon Siler being a player that the Titans will know very well after the game. Since CJ is a big threat, Siler will probably spend a lot of time on the field Stuffing the run. He plays the run like Ray Lewis. Almost… But overall, I see the Chargers winning this game because of superior Special teams play. The strength/weakness of both teams balance out on offense and defense, maybe an edge to San Diego due to both teams’ injury situations, so Special teams will be a big part in my opinion.

Very well said
Superduperboltman. Nice post and I’ll speculate Chris Johnson having a better than average run game. Although Siler has been awesome stopping the run and that goal line stance gives us a great impression of his abilities, the ‘D’ are going to have their hands full with CJ’s explosiveness. Reminds me of the early years watching LT.
My guess, Jeff Fisher will plan on running the ball to control the game, but Norv will push the passing game to stay on top. Another close game…..
Chargers 27 Titans 24
If pressure requires the Titans getting to Rivers fast
Then it seems like it’ll be a long night for the Titans.
As a casual observer, it seems as though the Titans, when not simply rushing four, use some delayed blitzes. If it is as you say, this is not going to be enough to stop Rivers.
Delayed blitzes were an issue earlier in the year as the line had some new people they were breaking in. This week, they’ll be bringing in a new starting Center (however, he’s been the starting center for years and was just injured up until this week) and possibly a new starting RT (depending on how up-to-speed Jon Runyan has gotten over the last week).
So there’s a possibility that the delayed blitzes might work, which means Tennessee would be foolish not to try a few, but Rivers has been great this season at getting the ball out of his hands really early.

this is a sincere question
do you think the chargers would get more publicity if the prevailing national opinions (right or wrong) about the most visible offensive and defensive players (rivers and merriman) weren’t so intensely negative? im sure you are aware of how much people hate rivers and his many douche faces, and i personally take joy in everything bad that happens to merriman, but do you think it affect media coverage too? being the only SoCal team it seems like media market isn’t really an issue, but i’d love your 2 cents.

No
Assholes get media attention all the time (pardon my language). The Bills get more media attention because they signed T.O. (whom everyone hates).
The Chargers don’t get much media attention because
1) There’s an east-coast bias in sports coverage (which only makes sense).
2) Most Los Angeles residents root for the Raiders or Rams.
3) The Chargers have never won a Super Bowl.
Los Angeles and San Diego are very different places with very different people. If the Jets had moved to Manhattan (as planned) and the Giants moved to Trenton, NJ to become the “New Jersey Giants”, you’d see a heck of a lot more coverage of the Jets than you would the Giants. That’s essentially the difference between the Chargers being the “Southern California Chargers” and “San Diego Chargers”.

It’s funny how every week when I do this somebody posts these same pictures like they’re proof that Rivers is a jerk.
For the record:
-Philip Rivers is a good, church-going southern boy
-He was married at 19 to his middle-school sweetheart. They were both virgins when they married.
-He has 3 daughters and 1 son (Philip “Gunner” Rivers).
-There have been several articles written about Rivers being a “homebody”. If you search for pictures of him, you’ll see pictures of him and his family at home (rather than pictures of him in the club…with his shirt off….surrounded by other shirtless guys….).
-Philip still drives a minivan. His reasoning is that it’s safer for his kids, and makes it ten times easier to get his kids in and out of the car (they’re all still young enough to need car seats). Even after signing his big extension he said he was keeping the minivan.
-You may know this one, but Philip played in the 2007 AFC Championship game (and played well) with a torn ACL. He had surgery the day after the game and rehabbed so hard that he was ready to go for 2008 mini camp. (As a comparison, people still are talking about torn ACLs affecting Brady and Palmer.)

I won't go as far to say..
as I hate Rivers. But, I easily say that I don’t like him. Surely even Charger fans will admit, he is a mouthy guy.
He gets into the game and he trash-talks. When I play football in the backyard with my buddies, I do the same thing. It’s part of having fun.

i wasn't trying to prove anything.
and i made it perfectly clear that i wasn’t endorsing such points of view. i’m a jay cutler hater myself, as i have multiple reliable sources that have actually met the guy and say he is a complete prick. so back in the day i thought it was awesome when rivers rubbed his nose in it. he asked about the faces, so i posted the pictures.

It’s funny how much Broncos fans warmed up to Rivers after they realized how awful a person Jay Cutler is.

Heh
I’d think it was more annoying if…
1. He wasn’t from Alabama, where it seems to be a regular thing
2. He didn’t freely admit that the reason he married his wife at 19 was “We wanted to save ourselves for marriage, but we were tired of waiting.”

Just a comment here as well
My brother in-law God bless his soul is a huge Chargers fan, I actually let him watch most of his games at my house on the big screen and since I have the NFL package i am sure to get the game. To be honest with you I kind of root for them on his behalf, and he does the same for my beloved Titans.
The last few times our teams have played there has been no love loss on the field, and both my brother in-law and I both love the physical nature of the game. It is funny my son who is 8 LOVES the Titans, and already talks shit to his uncle each time we play. He already told him that the only thing he asked Santa for was the Titans to kick the Chargers butts.
Anyway here is to myself and the rest of us Titans fans, may we be the ones smiling after the game. I have had to play the gracious host for quite some time now, though I wanted to kick my brother out all the while kicking and screaming, I hope this year I want him to stay so I can rub a little salt in his wounds.
The Chargers can still
clinch the #2 seed next week even if they lose tomorrow. If the Titans can keep their playoff hopes alive this week with a victory I would not be too upset. How could you root against a team making the playoffs after an 0-6 start? Here’s looking forward to a hard fought, injury free game! Merry Christmas!

Because I’d like to enter the playoffs with an 11 game winning streak intact.

I'm torn between
wanting someone like Merriman to get 3 weeks of rest and the aforementioned 11 game winning streak heading to the playoffs. That’s why I’m just going to sit back and enjoy the show no matter what the outcome. Go Bolts!

You had good thoughts, and somehow made me hate Phillip Rivers less, which makes me hate myself too. Good luck tomorrow, but no so much that it results in a Tennessee loss

John
In your opinion, what is LT’s future with the chargers, and do you regret losing Michael Turner and Drew Brees? Can Sproles be an everydown back like LT in his prime?
Okay, let me try and answer this in under 1000 words.
LT’s future – It depends entirely on LT. He signed to a significantly smaller deal this past offseason and this season, although it took some time, he seems happy to be playing second fiddle to the passing attack (mostly because this is the healthiest/freshest he’s ever been at the end of a season). If I had to guess, I’d say he plays for one more season…splitting carries with whatever RB the Chargers get to be the future starter…before retiring.
Michael Turner – It was the right call to let him go. He never would’ve accepted the franchise tender (no #1 free agent ever would) and at the time he was leaving LT was still the #1 or #2 RB in the league. If the Chargers had signed Turner, they’d have the 2 highest paid RBs in the league in the same backfield (death for the salary cap), not to mention both guys would be sharing carries (taking carries away from all-world LT) and Michael Turner up to that point was still relatively unproven (5th round pick with 1 career start). Let’s put it this way, if the Chargers had traded away LT to sign Michael Turner it would’ve been the most insane move in the history of football.
Drew Brees – Again, it was the right move at the time. Everyone thinks the Chargers regret not signing him now, but nobody bothers to look at the context. Rivers wasn’t drafted for the hell of it, he was drafted because Brees’ was a roller-coaster in San Diego that followed up every good year with a catastrophic one. He simply was not the player he is now. The biggest deciding factor, however, was Brees’ shoulder. His throwing shoulder was severely injured in the last game of Brees’ last season with the Bolts, and it required major surgery. Up to that point, Drew’s main weakness was that he didn’t have the arm strength to throw downfield. After this injury, all signs pointed to Drew becoming the next Chad Pennington.
The Chargers were very lucky to have Rivers waiting to take over the reigns, but they owed Brees something for having a good year going into free agency. Again, I’ll point out that if Drew was half the QB he is now he would’ve gotten 32 offers and had his choice of team and money. He got 3. Miami gave him a very low contract offer, New Orleans and San Diego offered the same contract (years and money). The difference was SD told him he would have to win the starting job in camp, competing with Rivers. NO said their starting job was his.
So San Diego absolutely did everything it could, and made the right decisions, with both Turner and Brees. If I could go back and change it, I’d take Turner over LT (I was pushing for this at the time even though it was crazy) but I’d still send Brees packing. Rivers is simply a better QB, and younger to boot. He’s also a better leader than Brees ever was in SD (another thing he’s improved greatly upon in NO).
No, Darren Sproles has been given plenty of opportunities to start games and be an every down back. He can’t do it. He’s not even a good backup. He’s a 3rd down back and kick/punt returner, and that’s it. That’s all he’ll ever be. The Chargers know it too. If LT goes down in the playoffs again, you’ll see Michael Bennett (who has been inactive all season) get the start.

I don't think I'd put Rivers over Brees right now
Although Rivers is one of the top QB’s in the league and, like you said, he’s younger. In any case, it was a difficult situation for the Chargers and Brees, but I think it worked out best for the both of them.

after having watched rivers in person tonight
he is money. he makes things so easy on his WR’s because he is insanely consistent on where he puts the ball, generally right on target. i would even go so far as to say that he has to be in the MVP conversation.

If somebody else doesn’t beat him first, we’ll certainly try. Our track record against him is pretty good.
