Titans 27 Dolphins 24: Fisher Owes His Job to Rob Bironas
It is a really good thing that the Titans have the best kicker in the NFL. It is amazing that the Titans played and coached so poorly and still got the win. How in the world can Jeff Fisher continue to run Nick Harper out there and keep his job? Bud Adams needs to make a VY-esque decree on Harper and quickly.
At the end of the day a win is a win. That was one the Titans absolutely had to have, and they got it. The Falcons helped us out by knocking off the Jets, and now we have to cheer like crazy for the Bears to knock off the Ravens. Discuss that game and react to this game here. MCM Radio tonight at 9.

hell of a game, congrats on the win. back and forth games all year for us are gonna kill me before I hit 30. good luck down the stretch, but not too much, since we’re all still fighting for that playoff spot ;-)

The title describes exactly how I feel about Fisher at this moment
I just don’t understand the fourth quarter playcalling against a team that has come back from several games in the last few weeks. Defensively and offensively. I think he’s a good coach, and I’m not going to shout “Fire him” over this, but jeez, we ended up lucking out so it’s OK for now…

If griffin had held that INT on their last TD drive
Then would people still be critical of fisher?
by Ruffio on Dec 20, 2009 3:29 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yes and No
I wouldn’t have seen his poor time management, so I wouldn’t be busting that, but he sat the offense down in the fourth quarter with no reason to do so. Again, you’re playing a team that has come back in the fourth quarter. I also know Heimerdinger wasn’t the conservative one, so it goes to Fisher. Also, a blitz or two wouldn’t hurt. Even if you’re up by two scores, you still have to put pressure on an NFL Quarterback.

by Great Paperclip on Dec 20, 2009 3:37 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe No...
but it depends on what decisions he would have made after that. He went in the tank when he let time just run out when he could have pushed for the defensive stop and offensive FG in regulation. I don’t think his decisions were terrible enough before that, but they were still bad.
Sucks that Harper got an INT. Now he’s stuck on the lineup unless he gets injured.

Great game....
all the way to the end. why we left the game with 3 TO’s still ill never know. great pick by griff in crunch time, should have had the one prior, but its a little more forgivable now. VY throwin some nice balls today for TD’s, wish the INT could have been taken back, but that was a freak play(hey maybe VY on defense wouldnt be such a bad idea, lol, nice tackle). Maybe Vince should have a talk w/ Cutler about puttin some touch on the ball. speaking of dual roles, close call with britts hand, glad it wasnt worse than what it was and he was able to come back(respect). we need to lock up robby b make sure he stays a titan for a long time to come, the man is clutch when the pressures on. big time to be staying alive in the playoff race.

It shows the advantage of having VY as a QB. He’s a running threat but we don’t have to sacrifice the passing game. Really when you use the wildcat you lose either the QB or a WR but with VY we can run all those plays from our regular set offense.

I just don't agree with you all about Fisher
Harper isn’t good. I agree with that. Hood had a couple of good games. I was happy to see that. I don’t know the reason why Harper is in, but I respect it and have to live with it. I’m not there everyday, I’m not a coach, I’m not in meetings, I don’t know players’ personalities. I remember posting something very similar to this a day after the 2008 draft. I got yelled at by a lot of people because I said to trust the front office for picking Chris Johnson and Jason JOnes and not trading for a WR. These guys do know what they’re doing and we may or may not agree with it.
I don’t think Fisher would have continued to play Collins after the bye regardless of what Adams said. I think he was waiting for the bye. In hindsight, Vince was ready and could have played sooner. Would we have won with him against NE or Indy or even Jax with our defense at that time. No, no chance. Fisher waited until after the bye, after the secondary was healthy, and after the schedule got easier to make the switch. Take nothing away from Vince, he has been excellent….but I think some of that is the position his coach put him in. I’m very happy with the way this season is ending and am once again excited about the future of our QB, he has helped to make everyone better!
I don’t want it to seem like I agree with everything Fisher does. I thought his not calling a TO was horrible today. I don’t understand that at all. But I think he made the right decision to punt in the 4th and I wasn’t too upset with the play calling. They stopped us. Go back through the game chat and look at all the people saying “give it to cj now”, or “it’s CJ time”. Well, we did….and Miami did a good job stopping it.
I’ve been on this web site since I found it sometime shortly after the 2006 season. I love reading here and posting here, but I have been frustrated with the extreme amount of negativity on game day. Everyone has their opinion and can post whatever they want on here, I just think we are better as a whole than what I’ve seen recently. Nobody what our opinions are….we have the same thing in mind…..we want to see the Titans win a Super Bowl. I think a new coach would set us back several years.

15 Years
My argument against Fisher is more philosophical than anything specific he has done this season. I share many of your criticisms and commendations of Coach Fisher, my problem is that is has been 15 years. I am of the view whether in sports, politics or any facet in life that change is good. Having a single person in power for a prolonged period of time has more drawbacks than benefits. Hence limited presidential terms in office for example. In 15 years we have won no superbowls and have had several playoff flame outs. There have also been many positives and we have seen some of the franchise’s greatest moments under Coach Fisher.
That being said at some point we have to admit that the current set up is not getting it done. Whether Coach Fisher doesn’t have what it takes to win it all, or his message is just falling on deaf ears, I don’t think shuffling it up can hurt us anymore. You say it would set us back a few years, but I ask you where are we now and how far can we fall?
I will be willing to see him for one more full season with a matured VY, dominant CJ and our emergent rookie core. If he can over come our FA loses and win then we will see. However, in any case, I think the time has come for change and I am all for it.

well said....
I guess I’m more of the belief that stability is good. I look through those same 15 years and see the same things you mentioned. I just really like Fisher and think unless you can get Bill Cowher, and Bill Cowher only…that any other coach would be a downgrade. Maybe I’m wrong….I think my biggest fear is seeing him somewhere else. It’s kind of like when Eddie and McNair left. I hated it for both. They were Oilers/Titans and always will be. Like I said, I’m not a a big “change” guy.

Disagree.
I just really like Fisher and think unless you can get Bill Cowher, and Bill Cowher only…that any other coach would be a downgrade.
There is always another great coach out there. This time period is no different. At one time Bill Belichick was a nobody. There was a time when Bill Walsh was a nobody. And, so on.
I don’t know who that “next guy” is, but the notion that the only guy out there that could be an upgrade would be long time coach is silly. Somewhere there is an up and comer that will become an NFL great.
by SuperHorn on Dec 20, 2009 5:40 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
Fish is drunk with power, very much like a third world dictator. His judgment seems really clouded this year. Playing Nick Harper and not playing Lendale White? Why on earth is CJ getting 29 carries when we have a very good change of pace back sitting on the bench? As fun as it is to watch CJ breaking records, coach fisher’s job it to win football games. Giving Lendale 5-10 carries a game prolongs CJ’s career.
Jeff Fisher has had 15 years to win a superbowl, and he hasn’t got it done. And i disagree that getting a new coach sets back a franchise several years. Look at Tampa Bay when they won their superbowl.

Uhhh....
Would we have won with him against NE or Indy or even Jax with our defense at that time. No, no chance.
Yeah. I think we could have beaten the Jags. But, that’s not really relevant. The important question is, could we have won ONE of those six games with Vince at QB. And, the answer is yes. I think Vince finds a way to win against either Jax, Houston, or Pittsburgh. If he just does that, we’d be in much better shape right now.
The issue with the whole thing is the same as it with Harper. Fisher has an allegiance to his veteran players to a fault. Fisher certainly saw how much better Vince was for this team in practice. The offensive difference is dramatically better with Vince in, and I find it hard to believe that a coach with Fisher’s experience didn’t see that. If he didn’t, that’s another issue altogether. But, he’s making the same mistake again. Anyone can see Harper getting picked on week in and week out. A winning coach puts the best players on the field. Period.

You're right...
the offense is much better than before……but last year it was good with collins. i think most of the people on here really thought he did the right thing by starting collins at the beginning of the year. i was happy for the change and am glad it worked out. our defense was so bad against jax, i don’t think we would have won that game with vince. just my opinion.
by gotitans27 on Dec 20, 2009 5:43 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
No. This offense wasn't good last year.
It was average. #16 in the league by Football Outsider’s metrics. It was an offense that got by with a great defense.
That’s not to say that this offense doesn’t have it’s own problems at times. (cough) Nate Washington (cough) However, we’re #14 per Football Outsider’s, and that’s with some bad offensive performances dragging the numbers down from earlier in the year.
Vince’s DVOA this year is good for 6th best in the league. Kerry…29th. Kerry last year, 13th.
by SuperHorn on Dec 20, 2009 5:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
no argument that the offense has been better this year w/ vince....
I’m not trying to get into a vince vs. kerry debate….like i said above, i like the way it has panned out. I hope it continues to roll into next year. i really don’t care what the football outsiders metric system’s mothers best friends dog says. The offense was good last year, kerry was bad this year, vince has been good. believe it or not, i am a stat guy. but sometimes stats don’t tell everything. when it comes to the titans, i make my own judgments on my own observations. i’ve bought the NFL Sunday ticket since 1997 and haven’t missed a game. i love this team and just want them to win.
it doesn’t look like we are getting into the playoffs, so these wins are just causing us a worse draft position and a tougher schedule! I still wouldn’t have it any other way. What a nice second half of the season it’s been.
by gotitans27 on Dec 20, 2009 6:06 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess we'll agree to disagree on the offense last year.
It’s not relevant to the point at hand. As you said above, Kerry was bad this year. Fisher should have benched him sooner.

by RhiNo6705 on Dec 20, 2009 5:30 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Pretty darn good
but probably not enough. We need miracle level events.
If the Ravens win today, which they are going to, then we would need them to lose against both at Pittsburgh and at Oakland to pass them.
As far as Denver goes, even if they lose today, we need them to lose both at philly (very possible) AND at home against KC to pass them.
So even if we win out, assuming Ravens win and Denver loses today, we still need Ravens to drop their next two and Denver to lose their next two. 1 out of about 50 probably, and that’s assuming we can beat Chargers, which I don’t think we can. Their passing offense is going to rip us apart, or I"ll be very pleasantly surprised. Unless Fisher decides maybe we should let Hood have a crack at it agai or Nick Harper slips on a banana peel.
At least that’s the way I think it stacks up – correct me if I’m wrong.

Sorry my bad
We only need to pass one of them (denver or ravens). Not as bad a picture as I painted, but still pretty gloomy.

The Broncos losing their last 3
instead of the Ravens losing 2 of 3 would also get us in the playoffs.

We WERE counting on Jay Cutler. Now we're counting on Jamarcus Russell
That’s right, he’s in because Charlie Frye had a concussion. What a miserable group to be counting on…

Harper gave up atleast 50% of the dolphins passing yards.
Also, Fisher had horrible management at the end. So they go 3 and out from the goal line and we get the ball around midfield with 30 sec. Great if you ask me. Not so great for Fish.

Cutler's rating : a hefty 7.9
No matter how bad your receiving corp, a so called NFL QB should not be this bad.

I maintain that Fisher was telling him...
that he got away with something on that play… That he missed a read or something because when Fish went up to him he had a smirk on his face and was looking at him like “well that worked, but it probably shouldn’t have.”
