CJ outplaying his contract?
So I got bored a bit and wanted to see how CJ stacks up against other running backs in the league in terms of salary and here's what I noticed.
There's around 252 backs (including fullbacks) in the NFL this season and the average salary is around 0,96 million a year according to SI.com.

The numbers are probably a little off, but you get the point.
So I made a list of names, I thought would have the highest RB salaries and here's what it looks like.
| NAME | TOTAL | YEARS | AVG |
| MCFADDEN | 60 | 6 | 10,00 |
| BUSH | 52,5 | 6 | 8,75 |
| JACKSON | 44,8 | 6 | 7,47 |
| GORE | 28 | 4 | 7,00 |
| PETERSON | 40,5 | 6 | 6,75 |
| BARBER | 45 | 7 | 6,43 |
| PORTIS | 50,5 | 8 | 6,31 |
| JONES-DREW | 31 | 5 | 6,20 |
| TOMLINSON | 17,9 | 3 | 5,97 |
| TURNER | 34,5 | 6 | 5,75 |
| T-JONES | 20 | 4 | 5,00 |
| GRANT | 20 | 4 | 5,00 |
| BENSON | 7 | 2 | 3,50 |
| PARKER | 13,6 | 4 | 3,40 |
| J-JONES | 11,8 | 4 | 2,95 |
| D-WILLIAMS | 14,5 | 5 | 2,90 |
| C-JOHNSON | 12 | 5 | 2,40 |
Notice that guy in the bottom?
I know, you can't rely on rookie contracts such as McFadden and Bush, but still...
You can't tell me CJ isn't better than atleast 10 of the guys on that list if not them all.
Some may not see it as a big issue, but I hope the titans organization do good by him like the 49ers did with Gore.

Great post
With all of the offseason talk starting to come up, I was thinking the same thing. I do think he is outplaying his contract, yet he still has a few years left on his rookie contract before any renogations have to take place. I do not want to see him continue to have such great success and then lose him to another team because our FO wont deal out a monster contract. I actually hope that they re-work his deal this offseason or next at the latest. It would save a ton of money compared to haggling with other teams in FA and lock him up for a long time
Thankfully
the NFL has a program that gives bonuses to guys on rookie contracts who out perform their pay. I’m sure CJ will get the biggest one this year.

Hmmm....
The only bonuses I’ve ever heard of, were signing bonuses and option bonuses, neither which have anything to do with outperforming one’s contract.
What program are you referring to, is it in the CBA? I even tried googling for such a thing, didn’t find squat… I might be mistaken though.
Okay, I see...
From what I gather, the performance-based pay program is usually meant for players who aren’t supposed to be starters.
Even if CJ does recieve a bonus, I doubt it’ll cover more than a million, which would still put him third least amoung the players on the list.
Plus its a one-year bonus, it doesn’t do anything to solidify the organization opinion of him. Do they really want to give him the impression, that he’s only worth 2.4 a year?
nahh
I don’t think he’s outperforming his contract. I would say Darren McFadden is about 4x better than CJ, as the contract numbers suggest. After all, McFadden was a Heisman candidate.
I say
please give him a new contract in the offseason…..why wouldnt we, he is “the most exciting player in the league!”
He has lived up to his EVERY COACHES DREAM nickname…so lets lock him in.
Lock Vince in too…
C...ya...J is running like....
a man who wants a big contract….and that is exactly what will happen!!
I think there will be a time to renegotiate...
But I don’t think you just run in and beg him to take more money. We took the chance on CJ, late in the first round after 5-6 other backs had gone. He agreed to this contract and the best part about finding good talent with later picks is the value you get. I’d say get one more year out of him at the current rate, then renegotiate with 2 years remaining on his contract.

absolutley
considering he’s one of the top 2 RB’s in the league, he deserves the number 1 or 2 contract. mcfadden? are you kidding me? he’s garbage! this post should open some eyes in oakland…
if it were up to me (obviously, it’s not.) i would lock him up for another year or two, a 7year contract would put him at 29 or 30 by the time he leaves, supposedly on the downside of his career, but now he’d be leaving at what, 27? that’s still the prime of his career. he needs a new contract and, since he’s a big personality, i think he needs one before he starts to make some noise. there can be NO DOUBT where he wants to be, face it, without him, we are next to nothing.
Tennessee Born Baltimore Raised
My point exactly
I mean, he’s not TO, not even close, but he does have an ego. And if things don’t begin to roll his way, he’ll start to open his mouth.
My guess is, he’ll play along this summer and next season.
If (when :D) he has another monster season, he’ll want a new deal, which he is totally entitled to in my opinion.
I disagree greatly.
He’s a comedian, not trying to do any harm. He hasn’t complained about anything.

To each his own...
I look at CJ as Ocho Cinco.
He’s a great team player, good work ethic and fun guy. The team loves him as do the fans. But one can’t deny how much he wanted a new contract and what he did to get one over the last two offseasons.
The rationality behind CJ not complaning has everything to do with him only having 1 year under his belt, which was good but nothing extraordinary. Watch him break the all-time yardage from scrimmage record and become the rushing champion this year and you’ll see how much of difference it makes.
It’s all about leverage. He hasn’t had anything so far, but he will soon. And don’t come with the excuse, that he agreed to a contract and should abide by it. It’s a rookie scale system. There is no way, he could have gotten much more from where he was coming into the league.
But believe me, I sure hope, he proves me wrong and doesn’t have any problems with his salary.
