Idiotic personnel decision by the Indianapolis Colts

Profootballtalk.com has just reported that the Colts have placed over half of their team on the injury roster.  http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/12/14/29-colts-show-up-on-injury-report/

In other words, (like they always do), they're going to mail it in for the rest of the season, pissing away all their momentum, and in all likelihood shitting the bed on Jan 16th or 17th against the Bengals or Chargers, a full 5 weeks from now.

Now for those of you who are not familiar with the Colts playoff success, under Peyton Manning they have been one-and-done in 6 out of 9 playoff appearances.  In 5 out of those 6, they were Vegas favorites.  If there is anything the Colts do with remarkable regularity, it is underperform expectations in playoff conditions.  But it's not like they had bad teams, my guess is that it has to do with the fact that when your starters don't play for weeks on end they tend to get rusty.  Buyer beware, I guess...

That being said, I sincerely hope that the Colts can find a way to win on Thursday, because we need JAX to lose in order to keep our faint playoff hopes alive.

That the Colts feel it is acceptable to disrespect the purity of the game and shit on fans of the sport by not realistically trying to win is disgraceful.  But hey, Jeff Fisher did it too last year (probably secretly wearing a Manning jersey underneath his powder blue), so who are we to complain, right?

We lost in the first round so… we can complain.

Actually,

they said that they would continue to play their starters until the game is out of hand (in other words, like a normal game). They have been putting half their roster on the injury report for a few weeks now.

Shit on the game? Where do you get these retarded bullshit cliches you spew out? GoTitans.com Message Boards? THEY’RE 12-0!!! THEY HAVE WON 114 GAMES IN ONE DECADE!!! I sure as hell wish the Titans would take a shit on us like that. And to compare them resting their starters for the PLAYOFFS to Jeff Fisher wearing a Manning jersey means you have a severe disconnect in your head. There isn’t any correlation at all.

Also, to say that Jeff was wearing a Manning jersey in secret against the Colts when he is one of the most successful coaches against the Colts is beyond retarded. It’s beyond moronic. In fact, it’s one of the dumbest statements I have ever read. However, I have come to expect this time of “production” from you, Beans.

Fisher doesn’t have a winning record against the Colts. but who does over a 4+ year span in the NFL? i would argue the ONLY other coach to have more success against Manning than Jeff Fisher is Bill Belichick, and most of his success was 3+ years ago.

This is, by far, one of the dumbest fan posts I have EVER read on this site. That includes DatBoyBehvans or whatever his name was. Unbelievable. Get some perspective.

There are 16 regular season games played a year in football...

Thanks to fans like you and I, the players and owners are paid salaries such that in one season many would be able to retire. For them to spend 5 minutes on the field delivering “risk management” as opposed to the entertainment that we expect from them is an affront to me. But not only is it an affront to me, it seems to have been proven empirically that this approach of “resting starters” serves no purpose other than “rusting starters”.

You sound like a bona fide Colts fan by the way. If they’re so fucking wonderful, why don’t you spend your time on Stampede Blue – because your input sure as fuck ain’t useful here.

And while you took this opportunity to fly off the handle at me like some wingnut who forgot to take his Lithium, I’ve been very consistent in my message on this topic. Teams should not rest starters, and I will take every opportunity I can to remind people here what that c*ocksucker Jeff Fisher did at the Dungy charity.

That the Colts are married to their fucked-up playoff approach of resting everyone after it has backfired so many times is ludicrous to me, and I can’t wait to hear what kind of retarded logic you conjure up if it ultimately ends up being the reason why 9-7 is not good enough for us to get to the playoffs.

You're absolutely right

The Colts mailing it in the last 3 weeks will be the reason for a 9-7 Titans team to not make the playoffs.

Surely it can’t be the Titans mailing it in the first 6 weeks, and not deciding to play until Week 8. It’s clearly the Colts preparing themselves for the playoffs. That’s certainly “retarded logic”.

The only thing the players and owners owe me as a fan is being best prepared for the playoffs. If that means holding out players who could play through an injury if needed, so be it. Caldwell has only announced what they are doing this week, so nobody knows what they will do in Week 16.

I think you're logic is sound.

You rest players that are playing through injuries to prepare for the playoffs. I do, however, think it’s “retarded logic” to sit Peyton and his receivers as a preventative measure.

by SuperHorn on Dec 15, 2009 9:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think that's only going to happen

in Week 17, and only be Manning sitting. He’s the most important player to his team in the league, and it isn’t even close. The receivers will continue to play, as long as they have no nagging injuries.

Week 17 is also @ Buffalo, so no playoff implications for anyone else, and it will be cold. They won’t need to prepare for a weather game, so playing in it has more disadvantages than advantages.

You're entitled to your opinion

But you’re blind to the abundant evidence that resting players does more harm than good. Even Dungy admits now in retrospect that it did not prove to work as a strategy.

If you think 29 players on the Colts are actually injured then you are simply naive.

by BeansCarter on Dec 15, 2009 10:32 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Depends on what "injured" means

Like was said above, the Colts injury list has been this long for about 4 weeks now, so it is nothing new. Add in it is a short week, so more players will appear because it first comes out 1 day after a game, rather than 3.

You got a quote from Dungy you can point to saying that? The last 2 years the Colts didn’t lose because they rested players, much like the Titans didn’t lose last year because they rested players.

Re:

There’s no way you could possibly know that.

Why did the Titans lose last year to the Ravens?

A combination of:

- Turnovers
- Johnson getting hurt

They lost because they didn’t play in Week 17? Is that what you are saying?

by mgrex03 on Dec 15, 2009 10:48 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's not what I'm saying.

What I am saying is that without a Delorean and a flux capacitor, we’ll never know. Maybe that one week off was just enough to make Lendale and Alge sloppy enough to fumble the football, which neither of them EVER do. Probably not, but without the ability to recreate those events under different circumstances, there is no way you or I could know the effect it had on the team.

It wouldn't help

The Ratbirds would still be a bunch of cheating pieces of shit whose “leader” is a murderer.

That’s why we lost.

I know we won't actually "know"

But I’d be willing to bet a significant amount of money that if Johnson doesn’t get bent over backwards after a play was over, the Titans would have won that game, even with the Turnovers. I think a lot of people here would agree with me, probably including yourself.

Johnson did not get bent over backwards after a play was over because he was inactive in Week 17. I think you all know why that happened.

There’s a reason Occam’s Razor exists. I’d apply it in this situation, even without 1.21 jigawatts of power.

Also

LenDale never fumbles in that situation in that game if CJ isn’t hurt because LenDale wouldn’t have been in the game.

one year is too small a sample to judge the titans

but do you guys REALLY think it’s a coincidence that the only year it worked out for the colts they had to keep the pedal to the floor? when you get four or five seasons where the colts lose at home to an inferior team after coasting into the playoffs, you really have to wonder.

i do think the titans resting players could have had some effect, because all the bad turnovers were fumbles from highly unusual sources, and that’s definitely something that can happen when you take 3+ weeks off without real nfl contact. johnson’s injury was obviously the main reason, but i dont think we helped ourselves by resting either. the other Titans bye-week nightmare against the same franchise in 2000 was unquestionably a matter of which team was hot and which team was rusty, as the ravens d out hit us all game long and the titans were completely worthless in the red zone.

i don’t buy into any of this “respect the game”/fan entitlement complex stuff. an nfl team should always do what they think will serve them best in the pursuit of a super bowl title. however, recent history pretty much shows that teams who win the super bowl dont bench players as a precaution in the way that the colts are used to. i skimmed all the way back to 2000, and not a single super bowl champ has done that.

I think it was a combination of things

Manning was not very good those first two Playoff games in 2006, throwing 1 TD and 5 INTs. The defense and running game won those games, which is completely opposite from most Colt wins. Playing through the end of the Regular season may have helped the defense, but certainly not Manning. Many people (including myself) think the defensive improvement was not because of playing through Week 17, but the return of Sanders.

Since you looked back to 2000, how many Super Bowl winners had a choice to rest players or not? I know the Giants could have, and the Steelers could have last year, but not sure of any other teams.

I'm with you Beans.

And, I know I’m in the minority of NFL fans. But it isn’t as simple as, you rest 4 weeks, wake up, and fire on all cylinders. It takes real game situations to keep that timing in sync. We see it every year in college when these spread attack offenses take a dump in their bowl games. These are obviously professionals, and the drop off isn’t as bad, but that precision timing is more important to the Colts than any team in the league other than the Saints.

There should be middle ground. Play them through the first half, or until the game is in hand. I’ve always thought that the risks involved with injuries are far less worse than the risk that you completely lose touch with the timing in the passing game.

I can understand both sides of this debate...

all I would say is…if your afraid of getting hit by a car…then don’t cross the friggin street!! In other words, you can’t really be worried about your players getting hurt…THEY’RE FOOTBALL PLAYERS!!!

John Madden gets it...

too bad not everyone here does…

John Madden: No such thing as meaningless games

Posted by Michael David Smith on December 15, 2009 10:19 AM ET

With three weeks left in the NFL season and two undefeated teams remaining, everyone has an opinion about whether the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints should rest their top players in the meaningless games at the end of the season.

But John Madden, the Hall of Fame coach turned broadcaster who’s now enjoying retirement, says there’s no such thing as a meaningless game.

“I’ve never understood ‘meaningless’ regular-season games,” Madden said in an appearance on ESPN Radio. “I think you have to continue to improve as you go into the playoffs.”

Although Madden said he would be careful to rest any injured players, he suggested that it could hurt team morale for a coach to pick a favored few players to rest and tell everyone else that their health is less important.

“I’ve never understood when you tell one player, ’We’re not going to play you, we want to protect you, we don’t want you to get hurt,’ what you tell the other guys who are playing,” Madden said. “I think that’s a problem.”

Ultimately, Madden said he believes that an undefeated team should try to keep its momentum heading into the postseason.

“I don’t know that you want to start shutting down too early,” Madden said. “I don’t know that you can take a month off and be peaking.”

We had 29 listed on the injury report for the game vs the Titans.

and 23 for the Denver game. I wouldn’t put too much stock in it.
