Rams 7 Titans 47 Quick Recap

Despite Vince Young going down in the second quarter to a hamstring injury, the Titans still managed to blowout the Rams to move to 6-7 this year. This was the first time we have won by 40+ points since  October 18, 1998, when we were still the Tennessee Oilers.

The defense managed to get five interceptions, two each from Keith Bulluck and Cortland Finnegan, and one from Vincent Fuller. The only disappointing thing about this game besides Young's injury was that Chris Johnson went farther off the pace to break Eric Dickerson's record by gaining only 117 yards. This game proved that CJ really does need VY.

I don't think that was it.

They have to change the Offense when VY is out, so that not only does the opposing Defense no longer have to worry about a running QB, but also, KC’s been inaccurate as all get-out lately. So, bottom line, when VY went out, the Titans lost a running threat AND the deep ball. That left them with CJ and a spluttering intermediate passing game.

It was bad Offense, really, and a better Defense would have stopped it cold.

I also thought the same thing

although after considering it, the guy that they had spying Vince was just another guy to stuff CJ once Collins went in.
Our offense definitely took a step back when Vince went out.

it’s his 2nd year, he’s got time.

i dont see him breaking the record, but i do see him breaking 2000 and coming close.

its amazing how he only has 117 game and he is in the press conference talking about how he could have done better and how it was not a good game for him. any other back would love to have over 100 yds rushing in one game. but for CJ its just another day at the office. he also made a bold statement in that press conference that said that no matter who the back is that he is going against, he is going to out perform them. sad part is it’s true and that includes AP. where is he this year? didnt he just have like a 19 yd game against a team that CJ had like a 150 or so yd game against? CJ FOR MVP.

QB Vince Young said that he tweaked his hamstring and asked to be held out for the rest of the game as a precautionary measure. He said that if the injury occurred in a playoff game, he would’ve kept playing.

We've been playing playoff games since week 7...

but he shouldn’t have had to ask: there was no reason to risk a severe muscle pull/strain against a team this bad.

If he hadn't asked

They probably would have held him out the rest of the game anyway, unless St Louis managed to pull off a miracle comeback or something.

I thought from the quote Fisher gave...

that he wasn’t too happy about it. He said it was a mild strain and didn’t want to talk anymore on it. I think there’s going to be more to come out about this.

If VY hurt himself worse in a game that they were obviously gonna win anyways…

… the fans would be asking for Fisher’s head on a platter.

Hamstring injuries are nothing to fool with. If the game isn’t vital (this one was in the bag already) then there was no need for him to continue…

I was a bit surprised

they played him in the first place. With the knee tweak in practice and the current shape of the Rams (particularly with third string qb having to go in), I’d have been tempted to sit him a week regardless.

Not that I'm disagreeing

but if Vince is going to in anyone try and emulate #9 he’s going to have to suck it up and play hurt sometimes.
Wasn’t his last hamstring injury caused the same way (ie: just running a play untouched)?
He seems like he busted off way longer running plays at Texas with no problems.

by Titan9 on Dec 14, 2009 7:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

But there's a time and a place, and McNair missed PLENTY of time in his career.

Not only that, but you don’t want to rush either a knee or a hammy because of the potential to make it worse. Whereas you can and do see guys play through back and non-throwing shoulder injuries routinely.

True.

VY’s legs are part of his game.

Playing him or not aside; now it’s not his knee, it’s his hammies again. Is this guy not training or what? I mean you know I’m a big VY guy and all but damn, he got hurt running down the field (again). What’s going on?

Also, on a completely different topic: I’m not sure if this has been addressed here but has anyone noticed how our Defensive Coordinator always wears a lot of red (always a red ball cap)? I’m assuming this is so the defensive guys can pick him out in the group or maybe the other coaches. Anyone have any insight on this?

Fisher said he thought the knee injury contributed because VY wasn’t able to get his normal running work in during the week. Which makes sense. A 44-yard run at full sprint speed can definitely lead to a “little hammy”, especially if you haven’t quite got the work behind it and haven’t had a chance to warm up to it beforehand. And VY had neither. He’d been playing out of the pocket almost the entire game beforehand and would have taken it easy on the knee—in all likelihood—in pre-game warm-ups. Certainly you wouldn’t expect to see him out there doing wind-sprints.

Rams were toast by the time of the injury. Vince was back on the sideline on the bike, Fisher said on the post game radio that if they had needed him back in he would have played.

am i the only one disapointed in teh coaching?

i know we won, but it was very bellicheat. not only the pass heavy offence (50/50 pass/carry is heavy for us), but the going for it on 4th down numerous times hwen up 30, including a goalline attempt, as well as finny running it back instead of taking a knee in the endzone. i get that its st louis, and this team now has a chip on its shoulder – but i HATE the patriots for doing such classless stuff. i felt guilty lliking this team today.

by mattd97 on Dec 13, 2009 10:29 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

As I said in the game comment thread...

We ALWAYS go all out against St Louis. If we play them in the preseason, that’s the game where we pull out the fake punt. If we play them in the regular season, we never let off the gas. I don’t know if it’s Fisher taking small bits of revenge for the Super Bowl or something else the Rams do to get the coaches’ collective goat, but there are days I wish they had that “Show no Mercy” attitude towards a couple of other teams.

Was going for it on 4th down necessary? Maybe not. But was challenging a catch that was clearly a catch to everyone with a half-way decent angle necessary?

And other than in that instance, I think they should have handed off to CJ more, but with KC out there the Rams were not going to take the pass threat (or any attempt at a QB scramble) seriously. And we couldn’t just take a knee every play.

by Antoniemey on Dec 13, 2009 10:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I know what you mean

I thought it was uncalled for going on fourth up by 30, kick the three and play D. Now the Finny play, that is all 31. He plays wide open every down, sometimes it cost us but that his game.

Offenses are out there to score, no matter what the score is.

The job of defenses is to stop them. Patriots have a bunch of Superbowls cause of this mentality, and if thats whats going to get the Titans to the Superbowl, then I’m all for it.

they also have them from filming other teams practices

you can win with class. the titans usually have. i cant really ever remember them pulling this stuff, we usually run out clocks and pull starters. like any other team outside of new england. its largely a st louis thing i think, but still tainted the win for me. i take pride in the football tennessee plays. smash mouth, run-oriented, tough as nails, but for the most part clean and classy.

and i didnt say take a knee on 4th down in their redzone, i said kick a field goal like you did everyother time you were there with KC this season.

by mattd97 on Dec 14, 2009 12:05 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm concerned with scoring points, not the other team's feelings

KC comes in and we go from 2 straight TD drives to 4 straight field goals. Fisher’s job is to make sure the team is hitting on all cylinders when we need to win out to have any chance of making the playoffs. Sorry that a couple professional athletes got showed up in the process.

I've seen this from other teams before

teams going for it on 4th down when up big is less insulting than taking the points. instead of kicking the FG and puting more points on the board it gives the D a chance to stop em and get the ball back. its not our fault the D can’t stop anyone.

but i guess guys here have no problem when the pats do this to guys. thats fine, agree to disagree. if its a game anywhere in doubt then sure, but 30 points late in the 4th just seems to lack some honor for me. as long as guys dont complain when its done to us i guess its just a difference in opinion. its why they make chocolate and vanilla.

I disagree.

Actually, I strongly disagree. CJ carried 28 times, and that is a lot. Moreover, once the Rams started stacking the line, it was on KC to throw downfield and loosen that up, but he failed miserably. Honestly, I’d liked to have seen more throws on 1st Down to Kenny Britt, which would have gotten CJ loose and probably let him run for 150+ on the day.

Is the Rams’ D especially fast on the edge or something?

by Titan9 on Dec 14, 2009 8:50 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Ehhhh

They weren’t gonna loosen up no matter how many times they threw it. They were intent on stopping CJ, and we were up by 30, so you might as well hand it off and let him try. I think we would have won by 60 if VY had stayed in and kept throwing it. And I think the Rams would have been happy to lose by 60 but hold CJ to 100.That seemed to be their gameplan.

But look...

…after KC came in, Kenny Britt virtually disappeared. Now as you said, the Titans kept trying to run middle, and the Rams obviously had it blocked way up. So why not work the outside WR? I mean, c’mon, the kid is having a year. And if you give it to Britt 3 times in a row for 15 yards, you’ll force a chance. THEN you can hand it to CJ and let him tear one off.

But Collins either couldn’t, wouldn’t, or didn’t see to throw the out. Which was frustrating. And instead we got a heapin’ helping of off-target TE-middle throws that fell about 50% incomplete.

Kerry Collins forgot how to play quarterback this season. That was painfully obvious.

But Kerry Collins sucking actually made Hands Washington a better receiver.

Maybe that’s why they signed Hands? Cause they knew they would need him for #5’s off-target throws?

It’s just sad that the worst rushing defense the Titans played are the ones who cost CJ the record.

Even winning by 40, it wasn't some great offensive effort.

The Defense got FIVE turnovers. FIVE. One was a pick-6. With that, you’d expect to win by 40. Seriously. So I don’t think it’s wrong or weird to point out the problems, even in a blow-out. There were plenty of problems to go around.

I don't mind the Titans running up the score. Collins made some decent passes

yesterday. That is the most points scored by the Titans in over 10 years and 33 were while Collins was under center. The Rams are not a very good team, but they would have put it on us if the roles were reversed, so I don’t feel a bit bad about it. Did New England feel bad when our defense couldn’t stop anything? IT is just good practice for the next game. IF this were a college situation then it is a completely different story, here you have professional athletes who are highly compensated to do their job, if they stink at their job it means they need to be doing something else.

but you’ve only been back a couple of days and I’m already sick of you. PLEASE stop talking about your personal feelings for VY, and how good Collins and Booty are. We’ve been through this BS for the past two years and the FRIGGIN HORSE IS DEAD.

We have an outside shot at the most remarkable playoff run in history, our RB could potentially break the all time record and we’re building a very special nucleus of young talent.

Collins is old and washed up. If we were playing a team with a pulse yesterday, he would have looked much worse.

Seems to me that Joy Kat has more issues than just VY....

You said that you would much rather see Booty play?? Are you insane? It is obvious that you..

1. Dont like the Titans or 2. You enjoy bashing the Titans….

VY has shown over the past 6 weeks that he is a NFL caliber QB capable of leading a team. You fail to mention that before KC, VY led us to the playoffs! You continue to defend KC…when it was known that CJ, LW, & The Defense was the reason we won so many games last year…and the Ratbirds intentionally hurt CJ to win that game…but you still show your disdain for him. KC has never had good years back to back….and you can claim that he went to the Super Bowl, but it was the defense, Tiki that got them there…KC has a track record of being good one yr and sucking ass the next…

How about this….turn in your allegiance to the Titans and root for some god awful team like the Raiders…… because your complete and utter ignorance is shown every time your fingers hit the keyboard..

So i agree with T the D and suggest that you keep it about what happened on the field and not your overall indescribable lust for KC.

I apologize in advance if I went overboard but this has got to stop….

Defense did it's job

Considering this franchises past history of letting rookie QB’s and no names beat them, Its good to see the defense handle this rookie like they should. Cant remember last time we had 5 picks in a game. Shut down #2 back in the league. I suppose it would be greedy on my part to have wished for a few more sacks or at least preserved the shut-out. Next two weeks will present a greater test. “46”
