Tennessee Titans Morning Links: The Music City March It Is Edition
PFW has an in-depth look at the Music City March (h/t WC22 and Joe Biddle), and what Vince Young had to do to make it happen:
"Well, the defensive line was spying two guys on the inside, so they wouldn’t let me do that (on the final drive)," Young said of running. "They wanted me to basically use my arm downfield. The only choice that I had was to check the ball down to our speedy guys. And they made a lot of plays.
Paul Kuharsky summarizes our up-coming schedule and breaksdown the statistical probability that we shock the world and make the playoffs (13%). The odds aren't great, but they were a lot worse five weeks ago. I just hope our guys are staying focused on the team in front of them every week, because they're the biggest obstacle to making this miracle happen.
Kenny Britt is going to get a shot at kick returner. I still don't know what their beef is with Alvin Pearman, because his contributions in the return game are worth an active roster spot on Sundays.
Follow us through the jump for more good stuff...
Dan Daly at the Washington Times delivers a good write-up of our season and the ridiculous feats Chris Johnson his pulling off this year.
Check-out this awesomeness from Paul K's blog:
ESPN Stats & Information passed on this interesting look at the probability of the Titans winning at the start of that drive and all the way along the way as calculated using this page at advancenflstats.com.
Key plays with time remaining in parenthesis:
(2:37) Start of final drive; 1st & goal at own 1-yd line -- 25%
(1:56) fourth-and-4 from own 7 -- 5%
(0:43) fourth-and-4 from ARI 44 -- 1%
(0:33) second-and-5 from ARI 26 -- 57% (first time in drive over 50%)
(0:28) third-and-5 from ARI 26 -- 40%
(0:21) first-and-goal from ARI 9 -- 69%
(0:17) second-and-goal from ARI 9 -- 19%
(0:11) third-and-goal from ARI 10 -- 11%
(0:06) fourth-and-goal from ARI 10 -- 5% (using TD pct here since we know it was last play of game)
It's looking like Justin Gage will be out at least another week, so Britt's starting job will continue to be safe.
Vince Young is so big he's getting covered by the real BBC, not just the fakey-BBC America. That's craziness.
Gary Estwick is trolling for losers on Stampede Blue? Serious facepalm.
Here's a cool little profile of a 9 year old who got sideline passes to the last game thanks to her skills in the Punt, Pass and Kick Competition.
Every time you read a great Titans-related story on the web and don't share it with the MCM community through the fanposts, fanshots or by emailing me at mcmaugustwest@gmail.com Peytoon Manning makes YET ANOTHER commercial. Is that what you want?!!!!?!?!

Give Britt a chance
he is an explosive runner who is big enough to break tackles and take it to the house…plus i just want to watch him with the ball!

I don't like the idea of......
putting the “playmaker” on punt returns…mainly cause of the chance of injury. And then…I remember Billy “white shoes” Johnson…and who knows, maybe it’s a good idea? Just don’t know if you want to put a guy who is clearly our best reciever in harms way like that. As far as Gage taking Britt’s place when he’s healthy….well that would make the whole Harper/Hood issue look miniscul by comparison. This kid has GOT to be on the field, PERIOD!!!!

i know that's the conventional wisdom and all
but does anyone really have any evidence that returners get injured more often than a WR running after a catch? i understand not putting a top guy in to block/cover on ST, because there are often some vicious blind side hits during returns, but i’ve never really understood the idea that it’s such a big risk to use a guy as a returner. if anything, it’s probably safer than a lot of offensive plays, because all of the tacklers are in front of you when you get the ball, so you don’t have to watch your back. on screens or passes over the middle you have guys flying at you from all angles.
does anyone have any examples of marquee players getting injured returning a kick or punt? is there anyone who actually returned kicks at some level of football who can explain? it just seems to me like you never hesitate to get your best WR the ball on offense because of fear of injury, so why worry about it on returns?

Wasn't Jeff injured returning a kickoff..
Granted that may not be a marquee player example, but that may be why he’s hesitant.

Not that I am arguing with that logic, quite the opposite.
But how about having CJ return kicks? Having him in that kind of space seems like a no-brainer.

Ever hear of Gale Sayers?
I’ll show my age here, but back in the 60’s (and I was just a kid, 7/8 yrs old) he was playing for the Bears and was Mr. Everything. He had 5 good years and was out of football after seven. And still made the Hall of Fame! That’s how good he was. But he hurt his knee on a kick return. So NO, don’t put CJ in to return kicks.

You would probably see Johnson in some kick return packages. He did it at ECU, he can avoid a Chris Henry type hit.

Bottom line...
The return game remains the single biggest glaring weakness right now. There are enough athletes to get some solid KRs. Punt returns are a lot tougher to figure out.
On kicks, Britt looks solid, but his size and importance to the passing game make it unattractive. Griff looks a little less willing to run hell for leather than as a rookie. Hawk seems like a good option, but he’s not a burner.

either put in hawkins or ringer at returns. hawkins is pretty expendible cuz he has not really got that many throws to him. and ringer is in the same boat as him. course for the future i would like to see ringer be the other part of our run game to bring a change of pace to defenses when we need to rest cj. if it was my team it would go like this. qb- vy, wr- britt and gage wide and washington in the slot. back ups could be edison and hawkins. te- bo scaife and jared cook at the same time in some plays. rb- cj and back up and pace changer ringer. same line with leroy harris replacing mawae after he retires. and kick and punt returner hawkins.

Fresh legs
Was good to see him with a slightly lower workload (still a lot of blitz pickup) vs. Arizona. I’d really like to see 25-30 CJ runs and another 5 designed runs from VY vs. Indy, should be doable unless Indy gets a 17 point lead.

Biggest difference between 2008 and 2009
Maybe not D-line or secondary, maybe the return game. Averaging 5 yards less per KR, 4 less per PR. That’s significant, about 25 yards per game. And we aren’t counting muffs/misplayed balls.

Anyone catch Sportscenter this morning?
I only caught the last part of the bit, but Adam Schefter was on talking about what starting Vince Young meant for the Titans. The context was that since Bud forced Fisher to start Vince that it violated Fisher’s contract. I missed about half of the interview. Did anyone see it?
by SuperHorn on Dec 1, 2009 9:23 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Seems like pot stirring
If it really came to Jeff saying an undeniable “No” to the suggestion to start Vince then I guess there could be a breach. I doubt that’s the way it played out… they were 0-6 and VY had to look somewhat similar to the guy we’ve seen on the field. The problem with all these “Insider” types is they get manipulated by agents/sources with half of their stories, for all we know Fisher could be angling for another extension or an out. I’d guess that the latter is unlikely given the way the team and its young offensive starters have performed.
by WC22 on Dec 1, 2009 9:46 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
sounds to me like a bunch of nothing
the premise is that fisher’s contract says he has final say on personnel and decisions. so schefter is trying to create a story by connecting bud’s comments an interview about calling for vince to start to that part of fisher’s contract. essentially he’s trying to say that adams forced fisher to start young and that violated the deal.
the problem with all this, is all we know is what a suddenly ostentatious bud has said to the media. we have no idea what the conversation fisher and he had was like, so it’s impossible to claim bud “forced” anything. fisher very well may have been in agreement that following the bye week was the right time to make the switch. we even speculated circa week 4 that he was going to wait until then in order to give vince the best chance to succeed on his comeback.
i have a really hard time seeing bud holding a gun to fisher’s head on something like this. just because bud was vocal about his preference does not mean fisher was “forced” into anything. fisher’s contract makes it his call who starts, and if bud had threatened to fire fisher unless the change was made, bud would have been leaving himself open to a hefty lawsuit for breach of contract. vince is starting because fisher decided/agreed/acknowledged/conceded/was influenced to decide that it was the right time to make that change. i really think there is nothing to see here.

The trouble with owners getting involved with decision making...
is that the coach loses credibility. So…from now on…we’re going to be wondering…did Jeff make that decision…or was it Uncle Bud?

If this was the Cowboys, I'd agree.
But this isn’t the Cowboys, and I don’t think there’s much to this story. More likely is that a crotchety old man likes to see his name in the papers and is looking to take credit for a joint decision. Fine. I mean, does Fisher want to leave? Doubtful. I mean, yeah, he probably wasn’t too excited to play VY, but then again, maybe he was ready and wanted to preserve KC to whatever extent he could. Either way, this same argument could have been made in 2006 after VY came in in Week 4 since that was Bud’s idea as well. But Fisher didn’t try to claim a breach, and again, why would he?

If you look back at successful franchises…you never here about the owner…his name is rarely mentioned. And if the owner does want to make a change, he has a closed door meeting with the coach, and the next the COACH comes out and says “we’re going to make a change”. It would be beyond stupid to fire Fisher, assuming this success continues
It obviously isn’t a guarantee, but you do risk completely undoing all of Vince’s progress by forcing a change of staff on him the year after he shows he is a viable franchise QB. He has full command of this offense right now. Really gonna risk making him learn a new one because you’re pissy over his Peyton manning jersey?
And don’t give me the “offense can stay the same” or “Heimerdinger can take over as head coach”. Heimerdinger was just as responsible, if not moreso, for the 0-6 start as Fisher, and if you’re gonna keep Heimerdinger for stability, just keep Fisher. So then that leaves kicking everybody out, and that forces VY to learn a new offensive system when he looks great in this one.
THINK people. THINK.

I don’t want to fire him anymore.
I still hate his ass, but I don’t want to fire him for those exact reasons.
I can’t honestly say it would upset me though. But stability is a good thing.
by gramsey712 on Dec 1, 2009 11:48 AM CST up reply actions 1 recs
Fisher and Young
Looks like he was dead wrong on Young… but you could also make the “in his infinite wisdom” argument for how VY got to where he is now. Scout team is always a very valuable process for a young athlete to experience… you’re forced to learn the game very quickly and execute above all else. Vince has acknowledged it helped him, some time may have been what he needed. Of course, Fisher will never admit he was wrong, if he was, and you saw that in his press conference yesterday…
“(on if Vince Young has shown that he is the long-term quarterback)
We drafted him to be the long-term answer."
That was a classic Fisher non-answer.
Anyway, apparently aside from being dead wrong on Young/Collins in 2009 and the return game, you actually have to feel pretty damn good about the direction of the franchise at this moment. 5 wins and great QB play can change a lot.
by WC22 on Dec 1, 2009 12:02 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I never said fire him.
But if wants to leave I’m not going to be too upset either. It’s almost as if this team is winning in spite of Fisher instead of the opposite.
And I am definitely in the camp of “stability is good, don’t have a coaching carousel” but I have lost truckloads of respect for Fisher this year which goes far beyond just “being pissy” over his jersey choice.
by Titan9 on Dec 1, 2009 12:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Fair enough
Although i think it’s ridiculous to claim the team is winning in spite of Fisher. Not because it’s obvious you’re wrong, but it’s just we have no idea.
Things we know:
1) Jeff Fisher is insanely loyal to players to the media
2) Bud Adams has ALWAYS wanted Vince Young, so for him to say it now is not so surprising.
Everything else is pretty much speculation. We have no reason to believe Bud and Fisher aren’t on good to excellent terms. Rarely would a coach and owner not get along and stick together for 15 years. However, even this is speculation. I have no idea of the true relationship between Bud and Fish.
My point is, we have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. What we do know is that with Vince Young at QB, Fisher at HC, and Heimerdinger at OC, this team is 5-0. If that success continues, logic stands that to mess with this “formula” would be dumb and unnecessary. That’s all I am saying. I see no viable alternative.

But we also know that with Jeff Fisher as HC and Dinger as OC, this team was 0-6.
So if Vince Young is the only reason we are 5-0, then who takes the hit?
And all that is facetious, but we cannot forget all of the sudden that this team was 0-6. Fisher doesn’t get off scot-free now.
But you are right, there is no viable alternative.

the offensive scheme
was clearly the biggest failure of the first 6 games in my mind. the defense had it’s issues, but with a new DC and no albert, there was bound to be a period of growing pains. but there was simply no good reason for the offense to suck like it did. none. how much you blame dinger for sucking vs. fisher for not stepping in and telling dinger to get his head out of his butt is up for debate. but for sure, heimerdinger has as much blood on his hands for 0-6 as anyone. i see absolutely no reason to consider dinger a good HC option, and without question nowhere near as good as what we currently have.

He's been coaching his balls off since the bye week
and I’ll cut him a little slack for the first bit since CJ was dancing in the backfield and Kerry was following his career pattern of good year/bad year. And yet, the offense really only imploded for weeks 5 and 6, where as EVERY OTHER PHASE OF THE GAME failed after week one.

I'm not seriously contending that he would make a good HC
but I don’t see how the guy who changes your scheme mid-stream to fit an unorthodox QB, and calls plays for the most prolific running back in history (potentially) is the biggest liability on the team.
Our D cost us 4-5 of those early games, because this was never an offense you count on to score 30 a game.

The one glaring thing I see that makes me say that Fisher is part of the problem
is our HORRIBLE return game. I mean who is responsible for this? Because one week it looks serviceable and that we have found “the guy” then the next week there’s someone completely random in there blowing it.
Who do we hang this on?

Fisher, obviously
I’m not saying there isn’t anything to blame him for.
All I am saying is that it is stupid to risk Vince Young’s overall success by getting rid of Fisher. We now know that VY can play well under this coaching staff’s direction. We also have enough history with Fisher in 15 years to know that:
1) The special teams will get better; and
2) The defense will get better.
This is my only point. I am not trying to erase the blame for FIsher, I am just saying that it isn’t worth risking VY’s success by getting rid of him for a very bad 6 game stretch that he and the team has recovered from.

No way he should be fired…but there are a couple of things that concern me…(1) He needs to be more consistent….(2) He needs to be more of a motivator for the team, show more emotion….(3) With him being undermined by the owner, I think he needs to take over the reins of this team and tell everybody, "I coach this team and I’m the one who calls the shots around here, period!!
