Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Dirtiest Links In The League Edition
Former Titan Albert Haynesworth and current Titan Kevin Mawae were voted among the dirtiest players in the league by their peers according to an anonymous survey. Mawae's name has been on that list going way back to his career with the Jets, but you have to know you're dirty if you get voted there while you're the President of the NFLPA. Albert, on the other hand, has a life-time pass onto the list after his stomping travesty.
David Climer looks at a possible fracture in the relationship between Bud Adams and Jeff Fisher over the QB position, and wonders if it might be the final straw between the owner and coach:
For years, Jeff Fisher has nurtured his relationship with Bud Adams.
It paid off with uncommon job security and unchallenged authority on everything from hiring and firing assistant coaches to having the final word on personnel decisions.
But the events of the past two weeks have created a disconnect between the owner and the coach...
Publicly, Fisher says the decision to bench Collins and start Young was made "collectively." Don't buy it. The owner had the only vote that really mattered.
Vince Young surprised the players and coaches of the Brentwood Blaze, a near by pee-wee football team, as they practiced yestreday. Vince gave the youngsters a pep talk and told them about his younger playing days. These are the kinds of things I've been saying Vince should be doing for the past year to get the community back on his side, and it's nice to see him get some credit for it. Being a quarterback in the NFL requires a lot more work than happens in the locker room or on the field.
Follow us through the jump to find-out which announcer apologized for comments aimed at a Titan...
Nice to see Gus Johnson apologize for his classless, but not outright terrible, 'running from the cops' comment... Mark Howard and Frank Wycheck were screaming that the joke was political correctness run amok on the radio this morning, but they also thought the comment was hilarious. I mean, nobody was calling for Johnson's job or a suspension, but a 2-second apology was definitely in order.
In other player service and charity news, Keith Bulluck and his charity teamed up with Soles4Souls to provide local kids with much-needed athletic shoes. Check the link to see some pictures of the event.
Make sure you check-out numbertenox's fanpost for some interesting views on the running game, featuring quotes by my boy Chuck Klosterman and Gregg Easterbrook links.
The Titans' improvement on the field was mirrored in their DVOA ratings for this week, and our boys have started a hopefully consistent campaign to get out of the gutter in all 3 categories.
PFW takes a look at Vince's performance and the coaching/ownership issues surrounding the team these days.
As was reported yesterday, former 4th round pick by the Titans Chris Davis was re-signed to compete with Alvin Pearman in the return game. It'll be interesting to see if the Titans re-sign Cary Williams to the practice squad as they did after cutting him back on September 23rd.
Mike Florio: still an all-around douchecanoe.

Florio IS a douchecanoe. I totally agree.
What kind of lame ass journalist needs to tear down a guy for having a winning attitude. What a joke.

I agree with Wychek and Howard
It isn’t racist. Plenty of white people run from the cops. In fact, I think it’s safe to say all human beings of all races run faster when running from the cops.

I never said it was racist
just in poor taste. I don’t think he should have gotten in trouble over it, but I thought an apology was in order. He did it, so I’m good.
On a related note, Johnson’s joke mid-play about Garrard making ‘chicken salad’ as he got flushed out of the pocket was hilarious… referencing this.

wait.... if you are of a particular race cant you make comments about that race?
im jewish so i can made fun of jews… gus is black so he can do that too.
people that get hung up over this stuff are rediculous. I absolutely love gus johnson and wish he commentated every sporting event ever, he makes me laugh so much.
once again, I didn't think it was really racist, just in poor taste.

exactly
we’re not talking Jimmy the Greek here…
Music City Miracles blogger and official Jon Bovi tour manager.
I didn't hear it that way...
I just heard a joke about his “speed”. Nothing else. I didn’t think it was a bad joke, in poor taste, or even racial. But, I guess in the overly sensitive NFL (no fun league) a joke about out running cops isn’t going to go over well, no matter how it was meant.
August, if it's not racist (and I agree it's not),
then what about it is in poor taste? What is distasteful about an analogy to help describe just how fast a guy is running? Isn’t that precisely the commentator’s job?
Come on TNT...
You wouldn’t normally use the words “like he’s running from the cops” to describe how fast someone is running. First of all, it implies that he’s some kind of fugitive or something…or else why would he be running form the cops? Bottom line…the guy probably shouln’t have said it….it was no biggy, but he apologized anyway…so who really cares and why are we still talking about it?

If I said he's running like a deer,
is that in poor taste because he’s not actually a deer? Does that imply that he’s some sort of animal and somehow less of a human being? Please… It’s called an ANALOGY. Deer are fast, people running from the cops are fast, etc.
As Posse said, people tend to run faster when they are running from the cops. To see this as a negative comment about CJ in any way, shape, or form is just crazy unless you are offended by fast.
Deers aren't criminals
most people running from the cops are.
Music City Miracles blogger and official Jon Bovi tour manager.
All deer are animals
and you could pick out plenty of things about deer that don’t apply to CJ. That doesn’t mean that I meant any of them when I called him a deer. I just meant he’s fast like a deer. Gus just meant that he’s fast like someone running from the cops, not that he should be running from the cops because he’s black, a criminal, or anything else. Wow…
Now if you said that about Pacman...
then maybe it is a little bit in poor taste since he actually is a criminal.
How about if he said "he runs like......

VY's pep talk
This comes off as genuine… the guy has always been about football.
I think it’s fair that people questioned his ability to handle adversity and ability to do more than utilize his athletic talent, but I never got the questioning of the guy’s love of football.
VY’s got his frickin’ nameplate and number tattooed on his back and his meltdown last year seemed more indicative of a guy who had too much of himself wrapped up in his performance as a football player than simply a heartless “quitter”. I think we saw a similar thing in 2007 with his desire to prove critics wrong about his passing.
Long story short, he’s had to learn to be a professional and rely on more than athleticism, but it’ stuff like this that I think shows he is pretty passionate about football. Now channeling that passion into professional improvement is the name of the game… and I hope to see continued progress on that front. Last Sunday was a helluva performance given the controversy, stakes, opponent, and, if Wyatt’s story (which he stands strongly by) of a change not coming until Thursday is true, limited preparation.

True story and interesting side note,
My best friend and best man at my wedding once ran from the cops on a moped, it was on Cops when they where in Nashville. He said he ran about a 3.9 40 after he ditched the bike.

I'm so tired of this argument.
This is precisely the reason people don’t want to tolerate people from Texas. You can’t just go around saying you are better because you followed the franchise longer. Sorry i was born later, i have no control over that. You aren’t any better than anyone else because you live in Texas, and guess what? This team ain’t in Texas anymore, so get over it and realize that they are staying here in Tennessee.

the team that was built.....
that went to the super bowl was formed when they were in houston. steve mcnair wore an oilers jersey before he ever wore a titans jersey.
"Waiting for the return of the Mac"
"Let VY loose, give him the chance to play his heart out. for himself, for the titans...and for mcnair"

best Texas slam i've ever heard...
we were at a party when a dude from texas was shooting off about how big the state of texas was.
my buddy from Alaska told him “we had to chop our state in thirds just so you guys could be the 4th largest”.
I spotted.

My point is with the Gus Johnson thing is I refuse to criticize or condemn someone for a joke
when I make jokes close to 20,000 times a day that would be “worse” than what Gus Johnson said. The Griese thing ties in as well. That’s how people joke. The guy, Montoya, even joked about it on Twitter.
I know, I know I’m not on TV in front of millions of viewers yada yada yada. But I think that most of us here can agree that Announcing for NFL games (or sports in particular) is generally bland, boring, and at best ambient noise and at worst infuriating cliches. I think they could really make it much better and more entertaining. I’m not saying they need to bring Patton Oswalt into the booth, but they could bring in some younger, edgier guys in. They don’t because when one off-color joke or a joke that could possibly be regarded as in poor taste is said, an apology is demanded and the media snowball crushes them for their innocuous comment.
I’m not saying what Griese or Johnson said was particularly funny (I did find Johnson’s comment funny), but I don’t think they owed anybody an apology for it.
How many times have we sat there watching a game thinking, “Why the hell does Dan Dierdorf have a job???” Well, the reason he has a job and not somebody who is interesting and lively is because Dan Dierdorf is safe. He will spew his football cliches that amount to nothing and are bullshit and tell me nothing about the game until the end of time and there will be no controversy and no ratings hit because fans watch games regardless if Dennis Miller is the Announcer. Well, I want Dan Dierdorf to be fired. I want announcers who will say interesting things along with funny things and who will go after players instead of saying Jake Delhomme leads the league in grit because they’re too scared of saying “Jake Delhomme reads a defense about as well as a dyslexic can read Tolkien”.
However, IF we ever want to get to the point where announcers actually add to the entertainment value of a game instead of at best being neutral and boring, we have to let bad jokes be bad jokes and stop demanding apologies for them. If we keep roasting every announcer who makes a potentially poor joke, they’ll keep hiring Dan Dierdorf to announce the games, and nobody wants that.
I digress.

I don't see anyone crushing Johnson
and Greise’s comment was just stupid. That one also should have been an apology with no suspension.

If we're calling out douchcanoe journalists
Climer gets my vote to be at the top of that list. Just because he is trying to say there is a riff between Fisher and Adams doesn’t mean anything. He tries to construe anything to make controversy. Adams says all kinds of things off the cuff and guys like him try to make into something.
