Tennessee Titans Morning Links: The Rebirth Of Joy Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 How good was Chris Johnson?  Nobody has racked-up more rushing yards in a game over the past two NFL seasons.  Neither Earl Campbell nor Eddie George ever got that many yards as an Oiler/Titan.  With performances like this and what we were witness to in the Texans game earlier in the year, we're damned lucky to be watching a running back with so much talent and ability because they don't come around very often.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Vince Young made a triumphant return to the starting spot yesterday, and his performance injected the rest of this season with a lot of hope where there had been nothing but darkness.  The playoffs are still a pipe-dream too far off to talk about seriously, but now so is the first overall pick in the draft...

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Nationally there was a lot of scuttle-butt surrounding the future of Fisher with the Titans.  Peter King, Jay Glazer, Chris Mortensen, Adam Scheffter and others all weighed in on the general theme that Adams may be ready to make a move... of course, all of those reports came before yesterday's divisional beat-down.  After the game Adams assured the mediathat Fisher had too many years left on his contract to consider releasing.  Of course, if you read Florio's baseless drivel in that first link there's always the option of offering-up Fisher like Al Davis did with Gruden... a move that has really worked-out well for the Raiders...

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Was I the only one who missed very annoying announcer Gus Johnson's classless comments during one of CJ's big plays?  Not that I'm killing the guy over it, but I just don't get why you'd say something like this:

1. Gus Johnson saying Chris Johnson ran “like he was being chased by the cops” after his 52-yard TD scamper against the Jags in the 3rd quarter.

Follow us through the jump for more on Fisher and the re-born Titans....

Star-divide

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Here's what a difference a win makes: Peter King hinted that Fisher might be dead man walking in Nashville on Saturday, and this morning he doesn't even mention it in his MMQB column.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Judy Battista of the New York Times says Vince Young's performance was an indictment of Fisher because he waited too long to sit Kerry Collins.  That's a bit of a lazy leap, IMO, and I'm saying that as someone who wanted to see VY start the previous two games.  Waiting until the bye week was probably a very good thing for Vince since he got more time to work with the coaches and practice with that mind-set.  The only way I'd agree is if Fisher really did spend the last two weeks lobbying for Bud Adams not to force this change.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 MJD picked VY as one of his five most valuable players yesterday over at Shutdown Corner.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 It was so nice to see Vinny and Cortland out there at full-speed, and I think any Titans fan with discriminating taste realizes that Rod Hood >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> NIck Harper.

Don't get me wrong: I'm super-happy that VY played well.

Still, I can understand why Fisher waited to pull KC. After last year’s season, it was reasonable—up until the New England game—to think that the team could and would play better with KC at QB. Up to the point where KC was 2/12 for -7, I was in agreement with Fisher that KC wasn’t the problem. Play-calling and Defense were much more obvious targets.

That said, you just cannot let a guy go 2-12 for -7 and keep his job. They’d already had an accountability problem in the organization, and that would have made it untenable.

I am guessing that CJ's 52 yarder will be in the plays of the week post.

That comment by Johnson would be right up there with Bob Griese’s taco comment.

What an asshole.

good news & bad news

The bad news is that our defense gave up almost 200 yds. on the ground (doing something that slightly resembled tackling….guys…we’ve got to get that corrected!!)….the good news is that we finally figured out how to score more points than our opponent….hey Vince…in the words of Dion Sanders….“just do what you do, baby!!”….and major props to CJ…LUV to see him in the open field!…LUV YA BLUE!! 10-6…here we come!!P.S.-Hey T-Rac…I’m starting to be able to picture your Kenny Stabler on my bookshelf.

AFC as offensvie powerhouse?

it’s pretty weird in a division typically known for peyton and defense, but the AFC south has the top rusher in the NFL, CJ, the 2 most prolific QBs in the NFL, schaub and manning, and the 2 most prolific receivers in the NFL, johnson and wayne.

Michael Griffin couldnt stop maurice jones drew on those two long runs. I hope hes not thinking about his child a the same moment huge plays are being broken.

At any rate Its a great relief to have a victory, and even better vince played very well, and Cj went off

How stupid do the people at EA Sports look…

… when they badly underestimated CJ’s abilities when ranking him for Madden 2010?

They better not make that stupid mistake again next year…

I had to stop arguing with drunks, Steeler fans, and all other fools.

I said it before

CJ is unreal in Madden 2010. He’s a one man offense. I can’t stress how must of a monster he is in that game. EA has nothing to apologize for.

by theologic on Nov 2, 2009 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

Agree...

I benched Collins for Young when I unwrapped the game, and between CJ running a counter to the left and VY running a play-action boot to the right, 125 yard of passing is plenty for me to get the job done.

by TNTitan89 on Nov 2, 2009 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

I am EXTREMELY happy with the outcome of yesterday's game.

It was Vince’s last(?) opportunity to show that he belongs in the NFL and he came out swinging.
I’m no stat guy but as he ever gotten a higher passer rating and/or no INT games? I’m assuming he has but wasn’t sure.

Mega props to CJ. He (literally) left it all on the field yesterday. The guy is a true phenom.

And a question if anyone can answer, where is Jared Cook? I thought this guy was going to be a stud right off the bat. I saw him catch one ball yesterday. Any word or insight?

by Titan9 on Nov 2, 2009 10:09 AM CST reply actions

Second highest rating by him.

His highest was against Buffalo his rookie year (127). He also posted a 118 against Detroit last year, but that was only in one passing attempt. His rating yesterday was 114.1, good for third best in the NFL this week behind Donovan McNabb and Brett Favre.

by SuperHorn on Nov 2, 2009 12:39 PM CST up reply actions

wow

interesting. thanks for looking that up.

the buffalo game his rookie year was the one his principal hater in the media (voldemort) said was a fluke.

by numbertenox on Nov 2, 2009 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

great things to see:

heimerdinger’s head is apparently no longer in a dark, dark place. maybe having VY play forced him to keep it safe, and if so let’s hope it stays that way. 49 rushes, 18 passes. that’s A LOT more like it.

the secondary is back from the dead. 323 yards for Garrard in game 1, 139 in game 2 and a couple picks to boot. Hood should keep Harper’s spot the rest of the way, and it was great to see Finnegan and Fuller back out there.

chris johnson, nuff said. but even bigger was the fact that lendale got meaningful carries for the first time this season. what the hell took so long? keeping the passing game simple and running the damn ball actually works for us, who knew?

and of course, Vince. he looked poised, he looked in tune with the game plan and other than the INT he almost threw, he was exactly what we needed. if we can have a guy that can take care of the ball, a la kerry last year, and who can pull the ball down and move the chains when necessary, that’s plenty for this team to win. vince and lendale were a huge part of getting our first big time of possession victory this season. while it’s way too soon to pass any judgment on the VY reunion tour as a whole, I’ll take what he gave yesterday every single sunday. VY as a playmaking game manager sounds good to me. now let’s see how he looks on the west coast without a bye week.

Let's hope that Adams'

comment about Fisher’s job being safe is bullshit.

I’m kind of torn here because I want to see Vince do well but if Vince leads us to enough Wins, we may get stuck with the Jeff “I just wanted to feel like a winner” Fisher for another season, and maybe two.

by BeansCarter on Nov 2, 2009 10:49 AM CST reply actions

I am still assuming that either Fisher or Vince

has to go at the end of the season, and I’m still assuming that Fisher is the one who stays.

by JimR on Nov 2, 2009 11:17 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

if vince can be as efficient as he was yesterday

in 5 or 6 of the remaining games they will do everything they can to renegotiate and keep him. collins is toast and no one in their right mind wants to pay a college kid 40+ mil up front in the draft if they can possibly avoid it. vince has 10 games to prove he is the future, and game one was a success. the degree of difficulty will increase over the next 9 weeks, but if vince gives them a good reason to keep him, they will. maybe the year off has really helped him and he is a more accurate, smarter qb than when we last saw him, because that’s what we saw yesterday. the jury is still definitely out, but if vince strings together a few more nice performances like yesterday the titans will have to really think long and hard about keeping him.

The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.

by hal41605 on Nov 2, 2009 11:43 AM CST up reply actions

I do not necessarily disagree with you, but

I think it is still a long shot that both Fisher and VY stay, regardless of how VY plays, because I think Fisher really, really does not want Vince as his QB. Jeff apparently would have stayed with Kerry all the way to 0-16 rather than have to play Vince. So, whatever the chemistry issues are, they seem strong enough that Jeff might tell Adams “it’s me or the kid” after the season is over, and I think even Adams would keep Fisher over Young.

by JimR on Nov 2, 2009 12:00 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

i dont know

i would hate to think it’s something personal between vince and jeff. if vince can get the job done, i don’t think fisher will have many complaints.

The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.

by hal41605 on Nov 2, 2009 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

Well, I'm just speculating, so who knows? But,

I am talking about something more substantial than just personal differences. Basically, it’s that VY is not the type of QB Fisher would have picked absent the edict from Adams. Fisher has a style of offense he wants to run and it’s not the type Vince excels at. Any HC ought to be able to pick his own leaders on the field, and Fisher has to feel some frustration over this. Plus, on top of that, I think there are some personal differences like you were referring to.

by JimR on Nov 2, 2009 12:24 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I don't think the type of QB matters to Fisher

VY looked like McNair yesterday. If VY can develop a deep ball and cut out turnovers, then he IS McNair. I always thought Fisher’s problem with VY was maturity and decision making, not his style as a QB.

I don’t think it’s personal at all. If Vince wins, FIsher will stay and VY will stay and all will be right in Titanland. Winning cures everything.

by T--Rac's Posse on Nov 2, 2009 1:57 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I agree

I don’t know if you can compare VY to McNair yet, but I agree about winning. If they continue to win, everybody stays and all will be forgiven….if not, then…changes WILL be made!

by titansfan4ever on Nov 2, 2009 2:27 PM CST up reply actions

If Vince can develop...

…into half as good a QB as McNair was with McNair’s attitude towards the game and the media and the fans, and we can keep the running game going, then we’ve got a pretty good football team for awhile to come.

Personally, I thought all the hoopla about Vince was over-blown last year, but I still supported keeping Kerry the first few weeks of this season. After the Pats game it didn’t matter to me who played QB as long as we could at least get a respectable showing. Vince gave us a respectable showing, and CJ ran away with the game (literally).

THAT was the Titans I know and love to root for. They weren’t perfect, but they got it done on offense and locked down on defense late to hold onto the win. Here’s hoping we see a few more games like that the rest of this season.

by Antoniemey on Nov 2, 2009 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

i disagree with you JimR

vy is buds man, bud likes fisher but if vy can show bud that he is the franchise qb we need with these next nine games, then fisher might be gone this year. it’s obvious that the relationship between fisher and vy isn’t that great and fisher doesn’t support vy. so with adams recognizing that i honestly see him booting fisher before his qb. that is if vy can prove to bud that his a solid starting qb.

by TitansFanForever on Nov 2, 2009 1:15 PM CST up reply actions

how is....

it obvious that their relationship isnt that great?

I am under a different opinion.

I think if we can really pull out of the nosedive (8-8 or better) I think both Fisher and Vince stay and we renegotiate Collins to stay as well. I was never in the fire Fisher camp but I did think he was an a-hole for the jersey incident but didn’t think it warranted running him out of town. I think we may be blowing the Vince vs. Fish drama out of proportion, all I’m saying. Everyone’s a pro and there’s not a lot of better scenarios for all of those involved. Wins solve all ills.
My two cents anyway.

by Titan9 on Nov 2, 2009 2:00 PM CST up reply actions

I still like Fisher for the most part, he goes to extreme lengths to protect his players.

I did NOT like the Manning jersey incident. That was simply mind blowing how he thought that could be a good idea. I don’t care if he did it for the humour, it was poorly timed and the words he spoke along with it made it very tough to swallow. Other than that huge blunder, Fisher has been a solid coach. My opinion of him may change in about 3 more games, we will see.

by Joy kat on Nov 2, 2009 10:54 AM CST reply actions

I agree with most of what is being said...

First off congrats to CJ that was one hell of a game that he had.

Defense looked good despite the two long runs, it seemed like everyone was flying to the ball, there was something called “Pressure” on the QB i think I heard of that before but cant be sure LOL. and Rod Hood is much better than Harper.

VY looked poised throughout the game, yea he had one bad pass that could have turned out as a pick, but it never bothered him which in the past I think it would have. I like most of you am not ready to call him our savior, but I will take his stat line anyday compared to what we have seen. He truly played to what the D gave him and managed the game.

Coaches, finally put together a gameplan that made sense Congrats.
