Tennessee Titans Morning Links: I Thought This Was America !!?!?! Edition
Vince Young is certainly in a groove these days, and we're going to need him to improve on that if we're going to win Monday night and get some revenge for the debacle that was the first game against the Texans this season.
I don't need a link to remind everyone that Bud Adams getting fined $250,000 is beyond stupid. When I think about this now, all I can hear is a drunk Randy Marsh from South Park yelling I thought this was America!??!!!
VY's improved passing is surpassed only by his improved decision making, which has won Jeff Fisher over during the last three games.
Trent Dilfer says there isn't much of a separation, but he'd take Adrian Peterson over Chris Johnson. Of course he fails to give much of a reason (teams don't fear Chris Johnson enough. REALLY!!?!)... hell, I'd take 'I just love that stupid Nike commercial where AP has skin reminiscent of a soccer ball and it's supposed to be intimidating' at this point, just give us something. I just don't like Trent Dilfer, and I'm pretty sure I never will. No one person represents that 2001 Ravens team more than that weepy hack.
Follow us through the jump to see what's keeping Nick Harper out of the line-up...
Players are crediting improved focus on the 3 game winning streak... rather than getting healthy and playing easier teams. I credit the streak to scoring more points than the other team and not letting them score more than us.
Coach Fisher delivered an awesomely vague update on Nick Harper in yesterday's press conference:
"Nick was cleared last week for contact. He was cleared to play last week, yes, by the medical staff," Fisher said Monday. "Being cleared by the medical staff and going back in the lineup and playing with a plate in your arm is two different things. We’ll just have to wait and see how he does this week."
Yetserday's press conference also started off with a sensible explanation on that seemingly useless challenge by Jef Fisher on the non-TD call for Chris Johnson Vince Young:
Well, what I explained yesterday is that we had some confusion in the personnel grouping and the play call. I was going to call timeout. Based on the fact that the play was close to scoring I just challenged it and just used the challenge flag instead of just calling timeout knowing full well that I probably was going to lose the challenge. Ordinarily you don’t do that, but it was the fourth quarter, I still had a challenge left and it’s highly unlikely that we would be put in a position to have to challenge twice, but it just made sense. I challenged the ruling on the field. I stated that I thought it was a touchdown.
Perhaps lost in all of the hoopla around the middle finger and the fine is the awesomeness of the last time Bud had to apologize for giving someone the bird (in 2000):
When showing off a sample of the AFC Championship ring the Titans would wear, Adams was asked what he would do if he ever won a Super Bowl ring. He pointed at a Houston Oilers AFL championship ring on his right hand, then to the sample ring on his left hand.
Then he held up the middle finger on his right hand and said: "I'll put it on the middle finger and say to the mayor of Houston to take a look at it."
Fellow Longhorn Brian Orakpo calls Vince Young a 'future Hall of Famer'.
Speaking of VY and Houston, do you love VY as much as Orakpo does? If so, then Battle Red Blog would love to hear from you!
Jim Wyatt passes along the reactions of Safety George Wilson and Defensive Tackle Marcus Stroud, who deliver opposing views.
Every time you read a great Titans-related story on the web and don't share it with the MCM community through the fanposts, fanshots or by emailing me at mcmaugustwest@gmail.com a Ravens (or Steelers) fan smiles. Is that what you want?!!!!?!?!

"Vice" Young?
Well, there are the shirtless tequila pics, but I don’t think that’s quite enough to warrant a nickname like that.
Doesn't matter what Orakpo says.
Or any other former Longhorn for that matter. Joy Kat says Vince will eventually flame out so it must be true.
too herself?.....
most likely. its been going on for so long already. lol.

Reasons to take AP over CJ
The only logical one I can think of is that AP probably has a lot fewer runs for negative yardage.
Ordinarily I am not a fan of “boom or bust” style backs, preferring instead the steady, workhorse, “3.5 yards and a cloud of dust” style guy.
But CJ’s upside is just SO high that it is outweighing his high number of negative carries.
That may be a reason...
…but when you take into consideration AP’s propensity to fumble … a few more negative plays aren’t as bad as coughing up the ball to the other team.
I don't know....
if it’s fair to compare these 2 backs, with their different running styles and all….I’m just glad we’ve got ONE of them on our team!!

Look at the fumble #'s for both RB's
AP is a fumble machine whereas CJ very rarely coughs it up.
Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.

Useless correction
I thought the challenge was over Vince Young’s dive to the pylon. That play was obviously not going to be overturned from the replays, but I thought it was great Fisher challenged it anyway no matter what his excuse was simply because VY wanted it, CJ wanted it, and the fans wanted it. Just showing a little support for his players imo….
"I condone fun things" ~~ Cortland Finnegan
I thought the same...
…that he challenged it because the teams energy was high, VY wanted it, the crowd wanted it, and he figured what the hell.
Can someone relay this to our resident "ask the ref" blogger
When challenging the play in question, did Fisher have the option of just challenging the spot? I understand that the reason for the challenge was to see if VY cross the goal line, but to me that is still a challenge of the spot since the officials ruled him down short of the goal. After the review the official did move the ball up, which is an admission of a incorrect spot but we are still charged a timeout and lose our challenge.
Back To The Future
I got this one
Fish covered this yesterday in his presser. If moving the spot of the ball results in a 1st down, then a challenge is won. Otherwise, it does not constitute winning a challenge.
Trent Dildo....REALLY?
get a life. NOBODY liked you when you were a LOUSY quaterback for the ravens….and NOBODY likes you now!! By the way, speaking of the ravens, did anybody see that poor excuse of a game last nite? I actually had a cardiac arrest, but I switched to Jay Leno and resesitated myself!!

He's got alot of maturing to do...no doubt, but....
the golden rule for recievers is: If you can get any part of your hand on the ball…you’ve GOT to bring it in….cause tipping it up…is almost always gonna result in a pick.

Those comments after the Orakpo article are HILARIOUS!!!
if you’re f’n retarded.
CJ vs. AP
Honestly, I’d take CJ. AP is probably a better weapon inside the 20s where a shorter field places a bigger emphasis on power, but AP does what a lot of backs do, just a hell of a lot better. The thing that really sets CJ apart is his versatility and otherworldly speed. There’s just so many ways Johnson can beat you… especially on 3rd down. That being said, Peterson is the more consistent back on 1st and 2nd down.
I don’t know where a DC would stand on the issue, but my guess is that CJ’s skills distort the defense more than Peterson. For that reason and his versatility, I’d take CJ and never look back.
until AP stops fumbling so damn much
it’s not even a question. AP is great when he’s great, but the media just seems to ignore this huge, glaring flaw. he fumbled more than once every 2 games last year, and he’s on pace to do similarly this year.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
AP's got a big marketing campaign...
And he blows up DBs. Look it makes for great highlights, but fighting for that extra yard often ends up in a TO and may result in a shorter career. You can’t ask him to play any other way, but I’d prefer a back that avoids those hits. LT in his prime was terrific at getting his pads below a sure tackle and diving for an extra 2 yards. He also never fumbled. The problem is nearly everyone, even some of the smartest folks, are more influenced by what looks impressive than what works.
i love how he runs
but you gotta hold onto the ball
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
if he continues on his pace this year
and ends up with 7-9 fumbles, he will be entering tiki barber territory.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
And
AP went to a premier college program, where as CJ was a complete unknown on the national scene when we drafted him. Combine all of our points with the fact that he set the single game record as a rookie and I get why people still go with AP, but shouting them down is the only way get CJ the pub he deserves!
So lets keep it up folks!

Right On
AP is a guy who delivers highlight hits on DB’s and has the media hype with his commercials. I remember a lot of the draft pundits belittling our selction of CJ, my guess is they would not admit that now. I have both on one of my fantasy teams and CJ is the one everyone keeps offering to trade me for.

Houston hate on Bush and Young from Battle Red
Pretty funny to me…
Reggie Bush may not have proven to be the phenomenon people had hoped, but by my count he’s started 34 NFL games through 3.5 years and has 32 TDs. As the Saints offense is transforming to a USC-like juggernaut he’s proving to be a really nice RZ weapon as well. I never liked how he projected as an NFL RB, but he’s found a decent niche. He’s not half the player CJ is, but he shouldn’t be an object of ridicule. When healthy, he’s dangerous, and he’ll probably make some big plays down the stretch and in the playoffs for an SB caliber team.
Young- This guy probably throws out every imaginable strawman… linking to Hoge as proof that VY is overrated… “125 yards passing”… will never be as good as Vick… couldn’t beat out Collins… only played because Adams said so. Here’s the bottom line on Young, ridiculous size/athleticism for the position, one really impressive NFL season (go back and watch NYG, IND2, HOU, and BUF) , one bad one, maturity issues, seeming improvement there and 3 good games in a fairly tough spot given a second opportunity. And say what you want about the “all he does is win” tack… but we saw an 0-3 team turn it around to 8-5 his rookie year. He went 9-6 in year 2 despite having a pretty average backfield, having some quad issues, and regressing (or defenses adjusting). This year he’s 3-0 taking over an 0-6 team. Vince Young is a guy that will continue to win a ton of NFL games if he can limit the mistakes and be an average passer… right now it looks like he can handle that.
And comparing VY to Schaub… Schaub’s got 43 TDs to 35 TOs and 15 Ws in 31 starts across 2.5 seasons playing in a very QB friendly offense. Let’s not confuse that with Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. VY’s got 34 TDs and 38 TOs and 21 wins in 32 starts. Schaub got to sit 3 years and put up those numbers from age 26-28, VY got thrown to the fire and put up those numbers from age 23-26 when I think we can all say he needed some time to adjust to the NFL game, business, and life. The spread between what Schaub’s done (decent numbers) and what he hasn’t done (win and stay healthy) isn’t so great from VY’s body of work to anoint Schaub an elite QB and laugh at VY.
We’ll see come Monday Night.

"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
can we all please stop quoting vince's W-L record?
please? one player has never won a football game. it’s a truly retarded stat. every player should be judged on their individual efforts. vince could play great in a loss or he can play awful in a win— the outcome of the game is not a reliable indicator of a single player’s performance.
hell, even baseball has pretty much ditched W-L record as an important stat for pitchers, and a pitcher potentially has several times more control of the outcome of a game than a qb.
winning is obviously the most important stat for a team, but assigning it to an individual player is just wrong.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Baseball is a bad comparison...
Pitchers don’t impact hitting and there’s not much they can do on balls in play. QBs can impact the way an offense performs around them in ways that aren’t measured by traditional or advanced statistical analysis. VY can directly and indirectly open up running lanes. Watching the games is really the only way to judge… but in a league that is known and engineered for parity, I don’t think W-L records are irrelevant for QBs.
Roethlisberger looks average by any statistical measure, but has a ton of wins and 2 SBs under his belt. Yes, the defense and talent around him matters, but his seeming proclivity to make key plays doesn’t really get captured in the statistical aggregates that we use to describe play.
The 'wins' argument just isn't compelling in the regular season either.
If he had playoff wins or a ring it would be more sound.

agreed
Teams feed off the QB’s attitude and body language. It may not be fair that they get blamed for losses, like when the D gives up a ton of points but that goes with the job.

I've always believed that DEFENSE wins games....
now in baseball…the most important position on defense is the pitcher. But which is the most important position on defense in football?

Well NOW we're getting somewhere!!!
Would you all even go so far as to say that maybe, just maybe, part of going 0-6 was because we DON’T have more “big name” defenders?

nah
there is no explanation for us going 0-6, it just happened. Like a 6 year old hitting a hole in one or Mike Florio reporting a fact/

You're right Dilfer.
It’s not like people fear Cj and his speed. It’s not like in the past two games hes broken tackles that would have stopped a TD and then gotten in. Are you kidding me? CJ also doesn’t fumble anywhere near as much as Peterson. Thanks, but i’ll go with CJ on this one.

finally evidence.....
showing the hate for the MAYOR of houston at the time that did not believe in the oilers and decided to take it upon himself to not give them a new stadium. as opposed to the confusion that bud hates the entire city of houston, which i always wondered why ppl would say that when he himself resides here. sometime you just cant leave behind the things you love…..i will always have an undying hate for lanier for not seeing what was coming with the oilers.
but anyways, im really glad that were looking to stick with rod at CB for the texans game, even if it were to be the last one. i just feel that fish will give harp his starting job back, with all the making sure he can really go out and produce in real game situations. although i hope im wrong on that, im stoked to get our fresh D out there in the houston game and hopefully put some pressure on glass schaub. although andre will always pose a threat to any team he faces.
im ok with the W-L record being a good stat to look at, i mean when receivers tip balls and they turn into INT’S, you dont see the WR’s at the podium asking why they couldnt catch the ball….you get the QB asking why he’s throwing so many picks in the ball game. QB’s get the majority of the blame whether their teams are playing good or not. and VY’s W-L record is when he didnt have a stellar D, didnt have the talent of CJ behind him, and didnt have the receivers to hang on to the balls as he does now. so really…..21-11! lol.
VY knows how to step it up no primetime, and hopefully he will not disappoint this time around. let’s go titans! (can already taste the bittersweet)

i just don't understand what houstonians expected
the nfl is a business. bud is a business man. if houston’s political and business leaders didn’t want to do what it took to keep his franchise, well that was a choice they made. then bud made his. is it really surprising that a big time businessman made a decision devoid of sentimental considerations in order to make more money? how do they think people become billionaires in the first place? nostalgia and civic pride don’t make 9 zeros in the bank account.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
I'm still waiting for the explanation on why
they balked at building a stadium for the Oilers, but jumped to build one for the Texans a few years later… there has to be a reason, but I’ve never heard it.

it always sounded to me
like they were pissed because they had just added luxury boxes and didn’t want to build again so soon.

ever heard the phrase.....
you dont know what you have until its gone?(im sure you have aug man, just wanted to open with that haha) that was the perfect example. mr. lanier didnt think having their own stadium was appropriate since we have the astrodome. and we also have the stros and the rockets and bud said that wasnt enough. and at the time lanier felt that the oilers werent a priority, once again not the city, big mistake. yeah theres confusions that the city didnt want the oilers, but that was after bud had already stated his displeasure with lanier and had put a date to when he would start to look to move the team. all the mayors doing for the most part, i mean the fans started the “luv ya blue” trend. and so the team leaves and were left w/o an NFL team, and thats hard to take, and the FANS wanted to have a team again. so thus the texans came, and we wont let the same mistake happen twice. so we got them a stadium. plain and simple.

so why doesn't Lanier get the hate Bud does?
better PR?
Music City Miracles blogger and official Jon Bovi tour manager.
oh he does, you just have to look for it.....
but its not the big time media display that bud still gets, plus its not like lanier is associated with the NFL….at least i hope he’s not. haha. but what was done was done, and the whole debacle with our oilers didnt exactly merit lanier more terms in office. i mean when it looked like it was all really about to go down we tried to pass a law so that bud couldnt move the team a year earlier than stated, but that fell through which sucks, b/c i believe we could have used that time to try and renegotiate things. but that’s how the cookie crumbled. when the oilers left town it took a piece of me with them, and there was no way in hell i was going to turn into a cowboys fan, i almost went down that path as a youngin. good thing i didnt. more like the dallas prettyboys.
