Before I vote, a question

What would it take for the head coach of a football team to step in and say, “I’m calling the plays from now on”?

Is that a FO decision, or does Fisher have the power to take the clipboard from ’Dinger and/or Cecil?

by TNTitans on Oct 6, 2009 11:07 AM CDT reply actions

It happens but,

it would not be a good move on Fisher’s part. He’s the master at dodging the chopping block – why not let the coordinators hang themselves?

As Stated In A Previous Comment

When you’re most creative play call is a fake punt using the back up punter in the Hall of Fame game, that should tell you something.

I like Fisher and I hope he gets things turned around.

My complaint is that he has a tendency to let things get worse before he tries to make them better.

I voted Disapprove

because of his handling of the problems on Special Teams. That’s the only situation I personally know he has directly fucked up.

As for VY vs. KC, I will see how it plays out before I condemn him.

Agreed.

With the addition that Kenny Britt is still stuck on the depth chart behind… well, both of those other clowns. And also, as carryover from last year, I’m still pissed that McCareins not only made the team but STARTED ALL SEASON!!!

Not sure why

I, for some reason beyond me, I STILL BELIEVE IN THIS TEAM! Maybe it is because I have been a fan since 1978 with the Oilers. Maybe it is because I live in Indiana around Colts fans who act like every lose means change everything. I have heard trade Manning after every playoff lose. All I am saying is lets see how this plays out. Part of me says it is time for Fisher to move on. Another part is saying let it play out they may turn it around and be in the playoffs who knows. GO TITANS!!!!!!

Sorry to say.....

If we lose another game then the season is over we will just be playing just to be playing! Especially if we still don’t play VY!

I'm sure you're hearing things

I’m sure you’re hearing things that reflect your own views and many other fans of your own team.
I for one doubt very much you have ever heard any Colts fan make such a statement of replacing Manning. Wishful thinking on your part and many others……..ROFLMAO!!!!!!

Try listening to JMV

Not trying to argue hear but if you lose in the playoffs this year tune into 1260 and listen to the “Colts Fans” go off. You may be one of the true fans to your team so you may not say that but believe me all the “Fans” who jumped on during the Super Bowl year freak out over every they lose.

Fans who jump on

LOL, those are called bandwagon fans and all teams have them, look at your fan ratio compared to last season in the amount of posts you have on this site.
I being a Colts fan from back in the day they first came to Indy notice how all fan sites have a increase in posts when that team is doing good and when their not the true fan base is always there.

While I think Fisher is screwing up pretty bad this year, he has been a stable foundation for this team for a long time. I don’t deny that Fisher could have, and still should, make some changes to get things turned around, and that a great deal of this seasons suck rests squarely upon his shoulders. But it’s Fish. Even if this season tanks I would still want him back next year because I have faith in the man as a coach. If he screwed up again next year, then it is time to move on.

And Special Teams is at the top of the list.

Firstly, letting Chris Carr walk last year was ludicrous. His production in the return game was outstanding. I know, I know, Carr wanted starting time at DB. Well we should have given that little prick the same empty promise that the Ravens did because Carr is currently backing up Dominique Foxworth at LCB while we’re standing there hands empty saying “Aw shucks, golly gee that’s unfortunate we lost him for no apparent reason.”

Deciding to go with no experienced or proven return man has already cost us at least one game this year. We all know how that ended.

Letting Eric King walk… Stupid! This team lacks depth at CB. That guy is a decent player who knows our system and FO should have had the presence of mind to realize that Harper and Finnegan are not always going to be healthy. Jimmy Schwartz wasted no time in picking King up (granted he’s riding the pine but still, better than a rookie).

Hiring Chuck Cecil… Chuck Cecil does not impress in a press conference. He just doesn’t seem very smart. Is this what is being reflected in the team’s defensive play? Perhaps. Gregg Williams on the other hand was available in the off-season… a known commodity who had already done a tour here (SB run no less), and is currently ripping up the league with a less-than-stellar personnel in New Orleans.

Letting the players have an easy schedule in training camp. Giving them extra days off. What? Are you freaking kidding me? Fisher should know better, you can’t take your foot off the gas pedal in this league.

All in all, Fisher made some very poor judgment calls this year. Pretty hard to approve of what he’s done.

by BeansCarter on Oct 6, 2009 11:40 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

i had no problem with them hiring cecil. he was in their system, knew the already very succesful defence. knew the players, knew the scheme. just hasnt worked out. i dont need them to go spend and extra million on a known dc from somewhere else, but i wouldve liked them to chose the right guy to promote which they clearly didnt.

by mattd97 on Oct 6, 2009 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Cecil

Just because he was a successful positions coach does not mean he was qualified to be a DC. That fact that he was committed to the same scheme that Schwartz ran should have been cause for concern from the start given the loss of Hayensworth. There is no one on the line that replaces Haynesworth on the pass rush. That means pressure has to come from somewhere else. Cecil has shown no inclination to find creative (or even mundane) ways to bring pressure and the pass defense is getting eaten alive.

Being a coach and being a coordinator involves a completely different skill set. It involves knowing your personnel, using them effectively, and finding creative ways to keep the offense off balance. Clearly Cecil has shown that at this point in his career he doesn’t have that vision.

Great post

I love Fish but damn if he dont seem like a bald tire.

The whole Special Teams thing is ludacrus. Chris Carr should have been re-signed and other than the fact that we suck right now I am sure he would agree. He would be starting right now.

White riding the bench. WTF??? 2 carries last game? That is insane.

Defense is in shambles. Thats Fishers claim to fame. If he cant make sure thats right then how can you define him as successful.

VY vs KC, who the hell knows what the really correct answer is on that one. I do know that one has played and one has not. The one that has lead us to 0-4 and has not displayed any of the atributes that lead to him being signed to a new contract and a starting position. At this point I could care less about Kerry so why not see if VY has matured. Personally I have seen enough (in his handling of the media, reaction to Steve’s death, and the high points of preseason) that I believe that be deserves a chance to stand or fail.

Over the years I have had the privilege of leading men. One of things that has enabled me to be successful is that I have always found a way to maximize my men’s strengths while minimizing their weakness’s. Fisher is not doing that this year nor does he seem willing to acknowledge that as a weakness.

I Voted Disapprove...

Simply because it’s seems like Fisher isn’t really serious about this season! All he been doing is making excuses about why things are so bad, this is the NFL you can just sit by and let guys keep messing up! I understand that you cant sub the whole defense but, how does a top five defense drop to almost last with the change of a defensive coordinater? Also how does VY get booed and pulled out for the season after one bad game, but KC can go out and throw all the ints he wants and he is still considered the best option! VY has never led us to 3 loses in a row and probably will never in his entire career lose 4 games in a row! Fisher and all these VY haters act like VY committed a crime or something all VY wanted was to win ball games, and Fisher talking about we need big plays well VY makes big play and maybe the Defense is doing so horrible “besides the fact that Chuck Cecil is sucking at DC” is that they have to be on the field the whole game because KC is 3 and out like 7-8 times a game! Fisher been coaching too long to pretend like he don’t see how to fix this problem! Tired of watching Fisher think that he can force progress out of a player either the player got it or he doesn’t! And it’s obvious that FIsher does’t care about the future of the Team either because KC is no Brett Farve and he keeping him in the came as if he doesn’t looked washed up! Most of his passing yards have come at the end of the game trying to make a comeback after the Team as already has given the game up! Those stats that KC put up in the end of the JAGS game were against backups so how does that look good Fisher? And I don’t even need to hit the subject about the Special Teams problem that was horrible!

I’m just not ready to throw him under the bus yet. The first 3 games were so close they could have gone either way. You can argue they shouldn’t have been that close, but what’s done is done. I think the poor showing against JAX may be what the team really needs to get its act together. Not going to knee-jerk at one game that really got away from us.

That being said, if we make it to the bye week without a win, there better be some changes made for when we come back. Otherwise, what’s the point?

I am a big Fisher fan, I would like to see him put Vince in but he obviously has his reasons which make me scared for the next few years. As long as making the playoffs is still a posibilty (Mathimatically) you go with the one you think can get you there. At 0-5, you make the switch. Fisher has been to good of a coach to turn on him now even with miserable dissapointing season.

by Flippin on Oct 6, 2009 12:44 PM CDT reply actions

Look...

I am not in favor of a mid-season change at Head Coach. That would be both suicidal and totally unnecessary. We have what we have in ’09.

That said, I do not believe that this team can win even 4 games this season, and in fact, I think we’re probably going to go 2-14.

And after that, people, YES IT WILL be time for a change.

He’s built enough good will with me over the years to get my benefit of the doubt. I also dont believe all is lost this year. If there’s one thing I know to be true about the NFL is it aint how you drive, its how you arrive. Get hot at the end of the season and thats all that matters. and it works the other way too as we all know from last season. I still think Fish has a few tricks up his sleeve. And if we beat the colts this week, and we usually play them well, we might be whistling a different tune. The line between hero and goat in this league is as thin as a dollar bill.

It’s just that Cowher gets the benefit of referees who all grew up Steelers fans………..The Seahawks and Cardinals got about 5 personal foul penalites just for wearing the wrong uniforms………

by Tripleh07 on Oct 6, 2009 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Wouldn't completely object to Gruden...

….I just go with Holmgren because of a longer track record of success – three Super Bowls with two teams HE built, One Super Bowl Title (if not for the refs, probably two with two different teams – including the freaking Seattle Seahawks), eight division titles in 17 seasons, nearly a .600 win percentage…………and then, of course, his rather extensive record of picking Pro Bowl QBs along the way………..(he’s credited with the direct and indirect development of several Pro Bowl QBs and MVP QBs).

Just a matter of preference on a theoretical, I know. But If I had to choose an available replacement, Mike Holmgren’s my pick.

Jeff Fisher: the Good

Here are some of the reasons I’m sticking with Fisher for now. It’s late and I’m tired, so this is not comprehensive, and doesn’t do justice to Jeff’s accomplishments.
1. His Won/Loss record is a lot better than the totals look. A lot of the losses were racked up in his first year and a half when he was re-building the Oilers from being a train wreck. The re-building years of 04 and 05 were very bad, but take out those two periods, and he’s got an excellent W/L.
2. I know there’s more parity in the league now, but it’s still tougher to accomplish what he has done in Nashville as opposed to one of the coastal cities or a mega-market.
3. I really respect and enjoy watching his brand of straight-up, more traditional defense-oriented ball. (I know that’s not what we’re seeing right now, but his track record is there, and I think he’ll get it back.)
4. Compared to who?? I can’t think of anybody else I rather see coaching the Titans right now.

by JimR on Oct 6, 2009 8:13 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

good points

esp. the seasons when we were truly awful in nashville. that was totally on floyd reese, and it’s a shame it drags down his career record. there’s a reason floyd lost his job.

if you subtract the 1-5 in his first season as interim and the 9-23 from 04&05 which was unquestionably due to the team being gutted by cap mismanagement (seriously those teams had minimum 10-12 starters who would never see the field on most teams), his career looks more like 118-78, which is 60%, roughly equivalent to tom landry and bill walsh. jeff fisher is a very good coach. things haven’t worked out for him this season, obviously, but this is the first time the titans have ever really underperformed their talent level. people need to wake up and look around and realize a lot of teams would kill for the decade the titans just had.

disapprove

i’m not sure how anyone approves of a season that has started out 0-4, when the expectations were centered around the playoff, and doing it with virtually the same team that went 13-3 the season before……..

the way this season has played out falls squarely on Jeff Fisher’s shoulders…..he sets the tone for the team…..he decides what is emphasized….he picked his D-coordinator……the schemes on O and D and Special Teams are his…..he had a great deal to say in who are players…….

to approve of jeff fisher is to approve of being completely unprepared for an nfl season…..to approve to bundling personnel decisions…..to approve of the tone and attitude set in training camp……

coaches don’t have to be perfect……expecting that will only get you a new coach every 3 years……

fisher needs to adjust….rethink…..be critical of his decisions…..and make better ones to help this team in the future…….i don’t understand how his approval rating could be anything other than 0% right now, but I still think he is given time to change his actions and decisions because he is too good of a coach not to learn from this and come out stronger because of it….

but don’t get me wrong….jeff fisher the man at the center of the blame game for why we are 0-4 and looking strong at 0-6………any disapproval of our 0-4 record has to be shifted squarely to Fisher……

Regardless of his success in the past, I have never liked his style of play tough defense, conservative offense, and win with a FG with 0:03 seconds on the clock.

This scenario works great in a perfect world. But football is not played in a perfect world…penalties, tipped balls for interceptions, a busted coverage, block FGs that go the other way for touchdowns, fumbles inside the red zone, etc.

Much prefer to have a coach whose philosophy is to open up the offense and blitz like crazy on defense.

He literally just wasted a whole half of valuable experience for our soon to be starting QB…

Everybody was saying that Vince would be cut after preseason and Ramsey would be the #2, well guess whos backing the Choker. Defenses were keying on Smash & Dash in the preseason and the Titans coaching staff didn’t make any adjustments. Fisher says: “Kerry gives us the best chance to win”. Fisher and his record.

I want to start by saying that I like Jeff Fisher very much….but, he has a streak going. In the 16 years he’s been with the franchise both in Houston and in Tennessee his teams have NEVER had more than two winning seasons in a row. I will focus just on the TITANS since starting at LP Field.. 13-3, 13-3, 7-9, 11-5, 12-4, 5-11, 4-12, 8-8, 10-6, 13-3 AND NOW 0-5 (more than likely much worse.) See the pattern? Fisher’s style of coaching cannot sustain a winning record. Other teams like the Patriots, Colts, Ravens, etc. are consistent winners because they have mostly young AGGRESSIVE head coaches.

Fisher would be good for a team that has no aspirations for a title (Detroit, Arizona, Oakland, Cleveland, etc.) but if he has not won a title in 16 years, chances are he’s not going to. I was hoping I would never have to say this but IT’S TIME FOR FISHER TO GO. I liked Phil Fulmer at UT, but as well, it was time for him to go.
