Ask a Colts fan(s)
Hi Titans faithful.
Before you boo me and start throwing used condoms in my face, please kindly hear me out.
I'm not here to dance a gig on your team's 0-4 start. Like many of you, I am surprised they are not winning football games. Despite my personal annoyance with players like Keith Bulluck and LenDale White, I still believe the Titans are a good football team and I respect their ability to win. an 0-4 start does not change that.
Trust me, after last season's 3-4 start for my Colts I know what you guys are going through.
With this FanPost, myself and shake n bake will answer your questions about the Colts and the upcoming Sunday night battle with your Titans. While I'm sure some of you feel the Colts might steam roll your team, I'll just say that I don' think that will happen. Jeff Fisher is a fine coach and will have your Titans ready to face our Colts. It will be a physical, tough game.
Please use the comments to ask your questions and shake n bake and I will do our best to answer them.

Is Peyton's performance thusfar this season even more impressive than his record setting season in 2004?
by SuperHorn on Oct 5, 2009 3:58 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He's on pace for more yardage, but less TDs
TDs are sexy, but I think carrying the O like he has with a much worse running game (Edge James went for 1,548 on the ground and broke 2,000 total yards in 2004) is more impressive.

What's the over/under on Peyton setting a new single-game passing yardage record?
The current record is 554 yards.
Keep in mind that our secondary is so bad right now that they might as well not even be on the field, but we can still stop the run. So the Colts won’t be able to run the clock out in the second half, they’ll have to keep passing to keep the ball.
The only way I see Peyton not destroying this record is if they pull him and let Sorgi play after the Colts go up by 5 TDs.

Sanders might be back
at the start of this season they expected him back by this week (or else they’d have left him on the PUP)
The run D was mediocre against Jacksonville, the DTs got dominated by the Phins, but the last two weeks they’ve done really well.

That’s the expression we use to say a player is practicing. Sometimes, guys will be out there, but if they don’t have a helmet, they’re just watching. My colleague said Sanders was out there for practice. It would appear the hunch that Tennessee week was his target for returning is accurate. We’ll see how much he practices later in the week, and more importantly, how his knee handles it.

The run D
Just shut down Julius Jones to under 30 yards last week. The run D has improved tons over last year. With the chance that Gary Brackett and Bob Sanders will be back on Tennessee, it should only be better.

Take your pick.
Would love for BBS to answer this one for me. Which QB would you rather see the Titans start on Sunday and why? I know in the past you have shown no love for VY but wouldnt you honestly say that Collins is a lot easier to game plan for and a lot less likely to do ANYTHING game changing.
Someone once said "Vince Young bleeds two toned blue!" But I disagree, because The Great One Doesnt Bleed!!

Answer
As a Colts fan, I’d love it if they’d start Vince Young because Vince is a bust of a player who, despite being in the league four years, still is too dumb to read a defense. So, if Fisher wants to start Vince, that makes me feel a helluva lot better about Indy winning the game.
Vince does not offer anything different in terms of game planning. He’s an inaccurate thrower who cannot make progressions and likes to run after his first read is covered. Vince took people by surprise in 2006. After that, teams got tape on him, and the Colts (like everyone else) went on to wax him. A big reason Bob sanders won the NFL DPoY award in 2007 was his 2.5 sacks on Vince in Week Two.
Collins is harder to defend because he can make the tough throws. He can make the 15 yard out throws, has good touch on the ball, and is good hitting spots in zone coverage.

Have you watched a Titans game this year? (And by the way I’m not coming to the defense of Vince Young. I completely agree with your assessment. He can’t make the throws either. I would rather see Eugene Amano in there at QB right now. Now that guy can chuck a ball, even if it’s between his legs.)

Vince vs. Kerry
For 14 games a year I would love to watch Vince Young run the Titans into the ground. Kerry Collins is a better quarterback (period.) However, the Colts have absolutely no idea what to do with a running quarterback. It was depressing to see the utter confusion when Miami was in the Wildcat. The strength of the defense is in the pass game and Kerry Collins will have no joy throwing into that secondary. Letting Vince, CJ and LenWhale come running out of the backfield would scare me a little. Just my opinion.
by invisibulman on Oct 9, 2009 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
the problem in Miami wasn't the wildcat
they ran just as well from traditional sets as the wildcat ones (and the Pat White Wildcat was a total failure in that game). The issue was the DTs getting man-handled.

Manning has been to the Playoffs
9 Times over the past 10 years, including 7 in a row. He’s won 12 games 6 straight years.
Brees has been to the playoffs twice in 7 years as a starter (1-2). He’s never won more than 11 games in a season.

that's an argument about the team, not the player
that sounds a lot like the reasoning pats fans uses to make brady the greatest qb EVAH.
the correct answer is the fact that not only is peyton slightly better as a passer, he runs the offense in his head too.

The difference is
Both Manning and Brees have never been blessed with an elite defense, so their teams’ winning is more attributed to them than the rest of the team. Both Manning and Brees have won their share of games when their defense gave up 30+ points.
Saint Brady has had an elite defense for most of his career, making wins more of a “team” accomplishment. But you knew that already.

Manning
Is the reigning NFL MVP. He’s won it three times, and if he continues to play this way, he will win a fourth. No NFL player has EVER won four league MVPs.
Hopefully, that answers your question, and ends this silly Maning v. Brees debate. Brees is a very good player.
He can’t hold Manning’s (or Brady’s) jock.

The question is valid DannoE. It’s just your comment “he’s not as good because he’s not as old? Is there another argument to be made?” is a bit silly. Unless you’ve been living under a rock the last two years, Peyton Manning has been playing QB better than Drew Brees. Both the numbers and the team wins back that up.
This just isn’t true. Especially considering Drew Brees performance last year. He was one play away from breaking an NFL record for yards in a season. 2007 is basically a wash for the two.
And, for all the times you’ve shit on the Vince Young “wins” argument, you should know better than to include team wins in the comparison.

I'm not downplaying what Peyton did.
I think he’s the best quarterback in the NFL. He had an exceptional year last year. I just think Drew’s was better.
My issue was this:
Unless you’ve been living under a rock the last two years, Peyton Manning has been playing QB better than Drew Brees.
It’s ignorant. You ask anyone outside of Indiana what quarterback in the NFL had the best year in 2008 and they are likely to answer Drew Brees. It’s not a shot at Peyton. Just a tip of the hat to Drew.

Do you really want to get in a pissing match about which award is better? I still say that you ask most people in the country who the best quarterback was last year, they will say Drew Brees. Peyton Manning at 30 had been elite longer than Drew Brees today (30)
Before he turned 30 Peyton already had 6 pro bowls, 3 consecutive all pro selections, 6 seasons with ANY/A over 10% above league average and had set an NFL record to TD passes in a season.
Before 30 Drew Brees 3 pro bowls, 1 all pro and 3 seasons with ANY/A over 10% above league average.

I think one stat that isn't charted is 4th quarter comebacks
Peyton Manning has led 37 fourth-quarter game-winning drives. It’s Peyton’s ability to, given the ball with a minute left in the fourth, finish the game that is part of why Peyton is better than Brees.
Performances like the on against the Dolphins where he had the ball for less than 15 minutes, still did what he needed. Or last year many many games when several top receivers injured, his offensive line injured, the Colts couldn’t run the ball or play defense, and the colts had no business winning anything but for Peyton’s sublime play.

While I'll admit that baiting you guys IS fun...
…in this case, I was just trying to spark some conversation about something besides VY vs. KC.
That said, bottom line, if your answer is, “His numbers have been more impressive over a comparable amount of time,” then that, at least, is an answer. Saying, “After taking a few years to settle in, both QBs have emerged as elites, but Manning, being older, has been elite for more years…” is NOT much of an answer.
Course, shake n bake actually answered the question, which is good because I didn’t know about what he said.

Dude! Brees is playing pretty well, no?
Well, if you’ve missed the games, trust me, he is!
I mean, granted, I’m not about to assume that COLTS fans would even begin to admit that ANYONE is in Peyton’s league—and that’s fine, honestly—but I was wondering what your take on it was.
I mean, from my perspective, Brees is probably right there with Tom Terrific—and honestly, Brees might have him because up until VERY recently, ol’ Drew was pretty much the ONLY THING GOOD in New Orleans. And he still put up UNHEARD OF numbers last year. I mean, his play was almost unreal, and that’s with no defense at all and no appreciable running game.
Bottom line, that’s essentially how Peyton made his rep. So… what the question was really directed at getting your take on it.
And again… it’s not like we in Titansland have a lot of compelling stuff on our minds right now. Our team is in the sewer.

PManning, Brees, and Tom is that they’re all very modest, which makes them great because they work very hard. Its what separates them from the whining trash-talkers like Rivers and Cutler. Do you guys (the Colts dudes obviously) see your lack of an effective running game as a danger as the season goes along?
I know Peyton is great, but the fact is the inability to convert a 3rd and 1 by just lining up and punching it over is a big detriment in playoff football. Also, just always having to run a complicated play to get 1 yard must be frustrating for an offense and a dangerous way to play. Do you all agree or disagree?
I know I should ask one more related to the Titans, but lets face it. You might see 3rd down maybe twice all night, our team sucks, your team is good and I am curious to your feelings as Colts fans to this question.

Short runs...
The Colts have always struggled in short yardage, though never moreso than last year. I think this is mainly the product of an o-line built to pass block rather than maul defensive linemen in the run game. It is a concern, but in general it doesn’t really seem to slow down the offense. The running game is markedly better this year and the short passing game is so effective that it is almost a moot point. The Colts convert 3rd downs at a rate of 48.9% (3rd best in the NFL.) If that keeps up, we should be fine.
by invisibulman on Oct 9, 2009 7:44 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Answer
Yes. The running game has not been bad, but it has been inconsistent, especially running strong side. The early issues seem to point to bad blocking by guard Mike Pollak and RT Ryan Diem. Pollak was drafted in 2008 to replace Jake Scott, and so far he has not lived up to his draft status. He is now rotating his snaps with a free agent named Kyle DeVan.

the Colts aren't generally a good short yardage team
but last year and so far this year it’s been one of the better aspects of the running game (which means it’s just mediocre). The Colts issues in the run game have been more about having no explosiveness (big plays) in the run game, which has been the case since Edge James blew out his knee in 2001, and far too many runs getting stuffed for no gain or negative yardage.

Right now
I feel more confident on a 3rd and 8 than on a 3rd and inches. Right now, they should just show the short passes to Austin Collie the first down machine. Running to the left side has been decent though. If Charlie Johnson doesn’t play, I will be much more nervous about this game than I am right now.
