Tennessee Titans Fall to 0-4 with 37-17 Loss to the Jaguars
And it wasn't even that close.
I really thought the Titans could turn it around after last week. Sure the Titans lost to the Jets, but the defense played better after the first half. I felt like if they fixed the special teams play, which they appeared to do with the addition of Mark Jones, things would get better, and the Jacksonville game was the perfect place to start.
Instead all today did was prove what many of us had feared since the loss to the Texans; this team simply isn't very good. Good teams don't start 0-4. Jeff Fisher, Keith Bulluck and whoever else can say whatever they want about the abilities of this team, but until they do something on the field to prove otherwise, they aren't a good team.
We will spend some time this week breaking down the game, but honestly, I just don't feel like doing it right now. The Titans were bad in all 3 phases of the game again. Kerry Collins appears to be done. I know I have spent a lot of time trying to squash the KC/VY debate, but it is time to make a switch. Collins has looked horrible in the last two games, and he is turning the ball multiple times a game.
Anyone who has read this blog for any length of time knows I am a HUGE Jeff Fisher fan, but there are a lot of things about this season that are on him. It is time for him to swallow his pride and turn it back over to Vince Young.
That is all I have to say right now. Feel free to sound off in the comments.
Tune in for MCM Radio tonight at 9 p.m. central. We will have the chat room up and going for any questions you might have (we will not be taking calls after last week's debacle). You can listen live here.

complete mediocrity as a peak of your team’s performance. Only a few franchises in this league never seem to have down-turns. We aren’t one of them.

This one was rough.
I mean, did Fisher not pay attention to the past games? I don’t care that we were playing from behind most of the game. There no excuse for allowing Kerry Collins to throw the ball 48 times. Or, for Lendale and CJ getting a COMBINED 18 carries.
Are you f*cking kidding me? CJ averaged 5.2 ypc this game. Kerry averaged 5.9 ypa.
Will someone explain the logic that it makes more send to pass the ball when you’re only getting .7 more yards per attempt, and the ball is consistently being turned over by Kerry?

A complicated play action pass to Washington that was way off. I knew Heimerdinger wasn’t gonna go with a run first mentality.

I know everyone has a hard on for Dinger because of his history.
But, a LOT of this is on him for putting Kerry in these situations to begin with. Know your personnel. It’s not Steve McNair, and it’s not Jay Cutler. You can’t continue to throw the ball and put an already bad defense on the field for the majority of the game. It just doesn’t work.

his system works...
with a qb the likes of the late great mcnair(rip), let the qb create a little bit more time for himself with is feet and let the receivers come back for the ball (which was why mcnair to mason was so effective). VY has alot of the same qualities to run dingers system, he needs a playmaker, the WR’s we have an run forever theyre young, fast and just need a few more seconds to make some space for themselves that KC just cant give to them. its like his feet are rooted to the ground, and that eclipse of a td run was oh right, but blocking save him on that one and im pretty sure someone runs faster when they just sh*t themselves.

It does work....
……Vince proved that in the preseason. The problem last year with Vince is that it was a new system to him. He’s had time to learn from the sidelines. Fisher won’t change quarterbacks though Collins is tanking. Will Vince Young have to save his job like he did in ’06? All the weapons are there, all we need is a trigger man.

Question:
How many games can Fisher afford to lose this season?
Before the season started, there was NO WAY I would have said that he was on the Hot Seat. But now? People, this team is terrible, and they look like they are collectively ready to quit. Personally, in the words of the late, great Owen Hart, “Enough is enough and it’s time for a change.”
Fisher looks old and tired, and I think that last season’s end killed something inside of him. He’s had a good ride, but it’s time to go in another direction. Seriously, we’re in real jeopardy of becoming the Lions. I think they would beat this Titans team, and handily.

So do a handful of AFC Championship game appearances, one actual AFC Championship, and several Division Championships, including one last year.

He is 128-106 after todays loss...
With a 5-6 record in the playoffs. I am not saying that he is a bad coach. But he is not nearly as good as all of you Tians fans want to give him credit for.
You are right. The Titans went 10-0 through the first ten games of last year. WTF have they done for YOU lately? 3-8 over their last 11 games including a one and done in the playoffs.
From PFR:

Super Bowl Wins: 0
Overall Championships: 0

Your never going to get an argumet from me sayin that the Sparkle Kittens are a better franchise/team (historically) than the Titans. You most certainly will NEVER get an argument from me that Jack Del Fail is a better coach (historically) than Fisher. All I’m trying to say is that 4 division titles in 16 years and 1 AFC Championship and 0 NFL Titles is the Definition of Average. And maybe Titans fans should not think Fisher is as Great as they do. send out a search party
cause thats not jeff fisher coaching. i dont know who it is, but its not fish. strong special teams, tough defence, smashmouth running, all leading to a tight game won with turnovers and field position. thats titans football. thats not what weve done all year. much of it is wit hthe players on the field, much of it is with bizarre and plain stupid personel decisions and play calling.
fishers always been conservative, but he knows to change the game plan to match his personnel and the outcome on the field. hed put pacman out there on offence to create some mismatches. hed try the occasional onside kick or fake punt. hed bring in smash AND dash. bring in vince as a rookie to throw off the defence and account for him.
now he does none of that. jus tthe same stubbornness. running cj too often (percentage wise with lendale – not overall). refusing to put in vince even as the occasional decoy to make defences account for him. and refuses to change what isnt working.
either aliens got him, or someone has nekkid pictures.

What is Heimer/Fisher thinking
Where is the commitment to pound the ball on the ground? This season has saw a team built to run the ball and take an occasional shot downfield off play action abandon its’ identity. Now we try to throw it all over the field, this is not the offense that Heimer ran before with us. No one is a bigger fan of Fisher than me, but he has to look at what he and the staff are trying to do. On top of that how do you come out flat against your rival when your back is to the wall? This was painful to watch.

Yes Jimmy man.....
it is time for change. not just because i tend to lean toward VY’s case in the debate, i actually had a thought that maybe KC could turn things around (he has so much talent on the sides), and that is just not the case as hes just continuing on his downward spiral. todays throws were off target, alot of them had a chance for a play but as he always does he just throws it out of bounds, wheres the pump fakes? wheres the safety look off? how about a little movement in the pocket??? something. ill give him the run TD today, but if defenses are gonna let KC do that, im pretty sure VY can have some success if not alot. secondary gave up big plays, which was not really that big of a suprise knowing finny would be out.
all in all, if the coaches are not thinking about putting in VY. in this game they could have given VY a couple of drives. especially watching KC throw a couple more dumba** INT’s that should have never left his hand in the first place.

The defense sucks
That’s the problem. It all falls apart from there. That’s Titan ball, stop the run and pressure the quarterback. They’ve stopped the run but can’t get to the qb. Collins isn’t the problem. Chuck Cecil is.
by Titanfan on Oct 4, 2009 4:31 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Amen
And that is why Fisher can’t understand it. Nothing much has changed, Carr, Haynesworth… Cecil is supposedly following in the footsteps of Schwartz, but he’s not as good. On Offense, ‘Dinger is asking more from Collins, but the idea is that there is more to work with this year. Collins didn’t let them hang those points…

VY or Kerry, who gives a crap? When you get a defensive effort like that, Joe Montana in his prime couldn’t help this team. i actually think we could win with montana, dont go too far, because what i hate seeing is the waste so far of good receivers. britts reaction late in the game to another overthrown pass, which would have been a good gain if he could have just got him the ball. how about a little sliding in the pocket to give britt time to come out of his break, once again not happening.

a defense with...
little rest is not that effective, and thats partly KC’s fault for throwing picks early in drives and putting the opposing offenses close to their own end zone. starting in their own side of the field can spark some kind of fire, especially after a momentum changer, which INT’s can be.

Our D can’t stop any passing game. 4 weeks in and every qb has gone off on them. Garrard is tough but lets be real, he is not in the elite of the league. Nick Harper got ancient over night, no pass rush, players out of position. All of this is not because fat Albert left, alot of this is on Cecil. Ok. We get it. Your team won.
And they did it handily, no excuses. We don’t like the Jaguars, but we don’t hate them like we hate the Ravens. But spending your time on this board, gloating and making your comments is the type of thing that shows that you, if not your team, is classless.
I know responding to you might be just what you are looking for, but on the off chance that you just don’t have a clue, I thought someone should tell you.

I think we're focusing on QB too much
I can’t defend KC anymore after the last two weeks, but every phase of the Titan’s game has turned bad, so I’m not sure any QB is going to turn that around sunglehandedly.
by JimR on Oct 4, 2009 7:35 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
couldn't agree more....
….Collins is playing poorly but as long as the defense looks like they’re playing two-hand touch football is it really gonna matter.
by ky_titans on Oct 4, 2009 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
True.
But, Fish touched on it during the post game. So much of this sport is about energy and momentum. Vince took a team with worse personnel around him and won. We know that Kerry can’t. And, at this point, there is no turning it around with him at QB. Cut VY loose, we serve to lose very little.
by SuperHorn on Oct 4, 2009 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wonder who the rest of the offense would
rather have out there now – KC or VY? No way to know, but the team surely has a good sense of whether VY is really ready to start again. I thought his preseason performance was inconclusive.

I should be
But I’m really not.
Didn’t Fisher say something to the effect of as long as we’re winning, KC is the starter?
Damn straight it’s not all on Kerry. So cut Nick Harper loose by Tuesday, get LenDale about 4 times as many carries as he has gotten so far, and somebody light a damned fire under Chuck Cecil’s ass already. Please someone let him know that he is replaceable.
Something needs to change, Fisher. Doesn’t really matter what it is at this point. We can’t stay the course at this point and expect to win any games, especially with 2 games coming up featuring QBs that will absolutely carve our piss-poor defense to shreds.
I’ll reiterate: something needs to change. If it ain’t Collins, it has to be something. FIX IT.

Wanna bet?
Letting Collins take every single snap in a blowout loss eliminates the Chance of Vince showing any possible spark and making it necessary to strat Vince next game.
I can GUARANTEE the thought of putting Vince in never crossed Fisher’s mind, and NEVER, EVER will – no matter what the record – EVER. Bud Adams is going to have to make that call again, cause as far as Jeff Fisher is concerned, if this team is 0-15 and losing 35-0 at the half of the final game, Kerry Collins will take every snap in the second half of that last game.
And Kerry Collins will start all 16 games next year, and will be a 50/50 call for 2011 based on whether of not there is another mid-30s veteran QB available who’s a good “game manager.” The only chance of seeing Vince comes from Bud – the ONLY chance.

I’d just like to make a few comments as an outsider.
1. The Titans have always been overrated and clearly were not ready to become the “top dogs” of the AFC South, let alone the entire AFC. There’s no doubt that they are talented in many areas but overall as a team they just aren’t that good.
2. Vince Young has never and will never be the answer. To all you Titans fans out there wanting Fisher to play Young “just cause” you’re seriously kidding yourself. We’ve seen this movie before and we know how it ends. I’m not advocating that the Titans tank the season, but they seriously have to be looking towards drafting a QB next season. There’s going to be some great ones coming out of college.
3. The entire defense needs retooled starting with the defensive line and working back. Vanden Bosch and Kearse are washed up and you need quicker defensive ends to get some pressure on opposing QBs. The linebacking corps isn’t bad, in my opinion it’s the strength of the defense, but Bulluck doesn’t seem to think he’s going to be returning to the Titans next season and maybe that’s a good thing. As for the secondary, yeouch. Though I’m sure you all are well aware of this.
4. Last but not least, it’s time for a changing of the guard up in this piece. Fisher has done all he can and will do for this organization. It’s time to move on in a different direction because obviously his formula for winning doesn’t work.
