Around SBN: Todd Haley Is The Steelers Next Offensive Coordinator

Dungy said that if he were running a team with a Top 10 pick, he'd take Tebow. Patrick then asked Dungy who he'd pick for his team if he could have any of the top college quarterbacks, including Washington's Jake Locker, Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford and Texas's Colt McCoy. Dungy didn't hesitate and said, "I'm taking Tebow."

Dungy

Is trying to sabotage the bottom of the league for some reason.

Has he lost his mind?

For a man that built his name and reputation on the shoulders of Peyton Manning, he wants to take a glorified FB in the top 10? The anti-Manning I suppose….

What’s he gonna do? Bring the veer to the NFL?

I think he has lost his mind..

…if he’d really take Tebow. Personally, I’m sick of hearing about Te-blow. By the way, this is a truthful line…

For a man that built his name and reputation on the shoulders of Peyton Manning,

Dungy did, and now Caldwell is, I wonder how much they thank Mora.

Did he give a reason?

I am sure it’s all about “attitude” and the “it” or whatever.

Maybe

it’s the cheesy Varsity Blues-esque halftime speech Tebow gave at the NC game last season that they play constantly on ESPN. That seems like it’s right in Dungy’s wheelhouse….

However I WANT JAKE LOCKER

Tebow brings the ball down

below his shoulder as part of his loopy throwing motion. This has resulted in the football getting knocked out of his hand during the motion. It is a very slow release for the small passing windows of the NFL.

Hall of Fame FB, though.

Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.

Why The Haters?

Listen I don’t follow college very closely but I do know one thing for sure. This kid, Tebow, is something special and if folks can not see the potential in this kid then I question if they understand what potential looks like. You hae to see them for where they can be not for where they are. This kid has amazing back story and a STRONG family base for a foundation. He will do well and he will not be a bust. I think he would be awesome for our team. A leader with character? One you wont see in questionable situations off the field and who will be a study of the game and WILL succeed. I for one hope he ends up here.

Just my nickel on the matter.

If Tebow is slightly overrated as a college QB

He definitely is very overrated as an NFL prospect. I’m not saying he can’t do it, but if a team wants to make him QB, he’s going to have to spend a year or two off the bench. He has decent arm strength but his release is g-l-a-c-i-a-l-l-y slow, and as a runner, he runs like a FB; which isn’t a good idea in the NFL over 16 game season. He’s not a big play threat on the ground and lacks speed.

by TheElusiveShadow on Oct 30, 2009 9:42 AM CDT up reply actions

He can't throw the ball against any type of talented defense

If you look at the games he’s played this season, Tennessee for instance, he hasn’t been able to pass the ball against a good defense.

Sure they beat Tennessee, but he had to run the ball 26 times in order to do so.

His low release and noodle arm will prevent him from being successful at the next level. The Titans surely won’t buy into the hype…

Tony Dungy

Has a man-crush on Tebow, because they’re both hopped up on Jesus. It’s that simple.

Dungy is not making a football-related statement when he says he’d take Tebow. He is making a character-related statement.

Tebow is the QB you take…

… if you are building a COLLEGE team.

But a pro team? Unless it’s the CFL, no way. Tebow isn’t an NFL starter in my opinion.

I’m not sure he would make a good 2nd string QB.

3rd string, maybe. His game and abilities seem better suited to the college game, not the pros.

Dungy’s name has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Fisher if Fish gets fired. I hope not, if Tony would come in and draft Tebow for the Titans instead of Clausen, Locker, Bradford, or McCoy…

I had to stop arguing with drunks, Steeler fans, and all other fools.

by steeler-hater on Oct 30, 2009 9:47 AM CDT reply actions

Tebow would fit nicely...

in the Dolphin’s offense. Which means any team who drafts him must change their offensive schemes according to his strengths in order for him to be successful.

Tebow would be *amazing* in Miami.

Some friend sof mine and I were discussing that over a year ago.

I really hope that is where he does end up, the OC in Miami has the kind of creativity and style that I think would put Tebow to his best use.

Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, Chad Henne (who seems to be running that offense quite well) and add Tebow, lined up at either FB or TE?

I don’t know how many games htey’d win, but it would be really fun to watch…

by hartley on Oct 30, 2009 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

he has fullback potential in the NFL, I don't see him being a quarterback though.

The kid is tough, I will give him that. I don’t care for his utter anger at times (he is supposedly a man of God) but he gets over the top angry at times, even when things are going good. I don’t see that as being a QB asset. I like a little emotion from a QB, but he is an animal at times. I like Bradford, or lets see what we have with Booty.

by Joy kat on Oct 30, 2009 10:22 AM CDT reply actions

Projecting Tebow

He has great size and mobility, probably would prove durable. Arm strength is good, release is slow. No telling how he can run an NFL offense, passes the Parcells test.

His physicality running the ball is what distinguishes him in the college game… making faster, more elusive athletes like V. Young and Vick poor comparisons. Given that toughness and size/strength are his biggest assets, he probably would be best off playing a position where he could utilize that. Don’t see him trucking NFL LBs at QB… theoretically he could play H-back or TE… reminds me a lot of James Casey.

If he can wow scouts/coaches on the chalkboard and at the combine, he could get drafted to play QB. I’m hesitant to write off that possibility, but a guy who is good for 4 yards and a cloud of dust in the SEC probably gives you 2 yards and a separated shoulder in the NFL. That being said, he has taken care of the ball and his ability to stay alive in the pocket might allow him to do some things in the NFL if he can prove an average passer.

Crompton?

Naw, not a big fan of Clausen either, but, since Bradford’s a shaky investment, I guess Jimmy would be the way to go.

McCoy has that completion percentage, but haven’t the Titans been throwing the dump off pass for far too long now anyway?

Don’t know much about Locker though….

by VolBrian on Oct 30, 2009 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

mccoy is not the way to go (pains me to say as a texas ex)

his amazing completion percentage last year, even with the dump off pass, was a statistical fluke, which is why you see him coming back down to earth somewhat this year. this is part of the reason why the longhorn offense has been stuttering a bit this year. the first half of this year he was told to stay in the pocket for one reason or another (coaching staff allowing him to show his ability as a pocket passer -FAIL and/or reserving scrambling for tougher teams). for the last few games he was “let out of the cage” so to speak and the offense finally started to roll.. but he won’t be doing this as an NFL quarterback.

all in all you guys should really just be looking at the first half of mccoy’s 2009 season when evaluating him, which was mediocre at best. far from heisman material and further from being the titans’ answer.

I have been wondering the same thing myself

I think most of us are looking at draft picks who fit what the Titans try to do under Fisher. If he is not here next year than who will be and what are they going to be looking for?

by bullrider73 on Oct 30, 2009 12:36 PM CDT up reply actions

i wonder

if this team would pony up the insane money for a top 5 QB. bud must cringe when he looks at the stafford deal. 40+ million guaranteed on such a hit or miss position is nuts. id rather trade a top pick for an established NFL guy or go with a sure thing like berry or suh. i can’t seen anyone talking themselves into tebow in the first round. his mechanics are worse than vince’s. we could take him as an H-back in the 3rd though. if we are losing lendale, i’d be willing to entertain the tebow dive as a short yardage scheme.

Do you think they would be willing to shell the cash for a QB after what happened with the VY pick?

Do you think they would lay out enough when they didn’t spring to keep the almighty Haynesworth around? I really don’t. I think Adams is a bit frugal and is watching his bottom line more than he cares to win. There are a couple of philosphies when it comes to ownership, pay just enough to get an adequate team, keep the fans coming in and have a hefty bottom line. OR spend till your piggy bank is empty and pray your roll of the dice pays off, and you either make a ton of money, or you lose big or barely break even.

So I don’t know exactly what it says, but the little Rumor Central Insider has a blurb about the Pats wanting Tebow to backup Mr. Glass.

Best 5 QBs at the next level

1. Christian Ponder, FSU
2. Jake Locker, UW
3. Tony Pike, Cincinnati
4. Tim Hiller, CMU
5. Sam Bradford, OU

Ponder has been the only reason to watch FSU this season

I guarantee you if he declares this year he’ll have a Mark Sanchez like rise

by Jonathan Loesche on Oct 30, 2009 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with the first 3...

All of them play in pro style offenses and all can make the critical throws with outstanding arm strength. Ponder has made dramatic strides since his Soph. season, and posesses all the tools it takes to be an NFL QB. Doesn’t mean he should go #1, but believe he has quite a bit of upside like Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco.

I think Clausen should be mentioned here as well. I have a hard time putting Bradford in at 5. When is the last time a Big 12 team has produced a QB that is a franchise player worth giving a damn about? Heisman trophy or not, Tebow has one too, but that doesn’t mean their games will translate to the NFL. Just ask Gino Torreta, Danny Weurful and the numerous others who have won the hardware.

Duuuuvvvvallllllll!!!!!....Damn, I miss Paul Spicer!

Fullbacks block for Running backs

why would you waste tebows talents on the full back position. yall say he cant throw cant run fast, cant do this that, look at his numbers, they dont lie.
And he doesnt throw as well against sec defenses, sam bradford doesnt have to play sec defenses, if he did he would never be throwing crazy 50 td seasons. Its silly to compare his number, and championships to other teams who play in inferior conferences.

Remember Mike Alstott??

Nobody is denying the fact that Tebow is as tough as they come, or the fact that he is one of the greatest college QB’s to play the game.

What we are saying is that he has a low release (bad for NFL) and a relatively (relatively) weak arm.

Yeah, he’s great at Florida, but remember Charlie Ward, Eric Crouch, etc. etc. etc. and Vince Young (still has a chance, not saying he’s done).

It doesn’t always translate, and Tebow will have the toughest job translating to the NFL out of the group we’re discussing. Bradford, McCoy, Locker, and Clausen.

the only place tim tebow could play qb in the nfl is in miami out of the wildcat. and thats cause hed run 90% of the time like he does playing for that “football” team in florida.

McCoy and Bradford are "winners" and also "good people"

If you are going to base it off of Tebow being a winner and also having great character, guess what, McCoy and Bradford fit the exact same description.
