Tennessee Titans cut punter Reggie Hodges in favor of Brett Kern
The Tennessee Titans cut punter Reggie Hodges and claimed punter Brett Kern from waivers according to Adam Schefter. Kern has a 46.1-yard gross average (6th in the NFL), and a league high 6 touchbacks, but he ranks 29th in the league with a 34.5-yard net average. Kern also serves as a holder, a necessity after Craig Hentrich's injury.
He was dropped by the Denver Broncos yesterday because they were "unhappy with Kern's inconsistency in directional kicking, plus his tendency to boot long, low-trajectory punts that were ideal for returning" according to The Denver Post.

Actually,
Kern is better than Hodges in every statistical category this year.

But I'm sure Denver's coverage team is better than ours.
So if a team with better punt coverage than us fired him because his punts are “ideal for returning,” then what are returners going to do to our coverage units with his punts?
That’s where I was going with that, not really that I think that Hodges was great, because he’s not.
This whole year
Is like a country music song for the Titans. Their dog died, their wife left them with three kids to care for, pickup’s broke, etc.
and on top of that their teams losing

Young guns
So if the focus now should be looking at the young guys and giving them some valuable playing time, why the hell is Trapasso still eating a practice squad spot?? Is this guy seriously an upgrade from Hodges AND AJ? Argh!!
i'm kinda curious as to why they haven't brought trapasso onto the starting roster.
is he that bad that we have went outside the organization twice instead of just bringing him in?
by TitansFanForever on Oct 27, 2009 9:37 PM CDT reply actions
I can't really believe Trapasso is that bad...
after all, the guy did score a touchdown, which is better than the rest of the team can do as of late.

yea but that's not his normal job
you have to look at how he PUNTED. a lot of ppl fell in love with the guy when he did that. but of course, if i remember correctly he kept hitting the score board in dallas so he has the power. and he also had fairly good stats in the preseason, which to a punter or kicker is like a regular season game. so i really don’t know why they didn’t bring him in when hentrich went down. at some point you have got to start giving your young players chances to show what they got, and now would be that time.

I thought Trapasso played well in the preseason…
… I think they don’t want a rookie at that position. I understood that when the season started. But now that the season is in the dumper, I would think they would want to get this guy some experience. But whatever.
I still believe that Trapasso is the future punter of the Titans…

I agree
I figured we would see Trapasso also.

Holder
I wonder if it isn’t so much a question of AJ’s kicking skill but rather his skill as a holder.
With Craig out we need both and I am thinking maybe they are signing this guy because he can do both until AJ has time to improve his holding skills. Since we can’t seem to remember what the endzone in (or even the red zone for that matter) field goals are our best hope.
I can’t believe neither Collins or VY can hold for the kicker.
If not being a holder is all that’s “holding” AJ back, then I suggest he start practicing it a whole lot…

Oh I agree
I think KC or VY should be able to do it, or anybody else for that matter. I liked AJ and was one of the people that doubted Craig’s ability to finish the season before it ever got started. I think Trapasso is the way to go.
I was just trying to suggest a reason why they aren’t going with him yet. Then again after what we have seen so far this season maybe they aren’t going with him because he IS the best choice. Kinda like blitzing more, starting Britt and Cook, and a host of other good choices the team seems uncapable of making.
Hi, I'm from the Broncos site
As far as a holder, Kern was great. I don’t recall him ever having a bad hold.
For punting ability, he can kick the ball well, I think he is talented enough to be a great punter. Right now though, he consistently either shanks the ball terribly or kicks a punt that may be long but didn’t have enough hang time and gets returned for a very low net about twice a game. When he is trying to punt the ball close to the end zone, he rarely gets the ball to bounce up or back, it usually bounds into the end zone if it bounces in the 10. Often, the ball just bounces in the end zone off the fly.
Compared to Hodges, I think he has more punting talent, but you might be concerned with how many more punts are getting returned. Hodges fair catch rate has been good over his career, while Kern’s has been poor.

i didn't think about this... but that's is probably why he hasn't been signed to the regular roster
but for all we know, he might be an excellent holder

I don't know if you wnat the QB holding the football, I keep thinking about
Tony Romo’s screw up a few years back that killed the Cowboys.
Joy Kat
It doesn’t matter if he was the quarterback or not. That could have happened to anyone. It actually helps that he was the quarterback because he could attempt to get a first down. It’s definitely not going to happen, but if Vince could hold the ball, he would be perfect when things go bad because he could run or throw for a first down.
