Jeff Fisher went to the Rocketown lunch wearing a Peyton Manning jersey and said "I just wanted to feel like a winner." It's sad it's come to this.

I don't find it funny
Because after all of the ups and downs and highs and lows and all that I have invested in this team. After the way I felt after that Raven game in January and after the way I felt after that epic beatdown on Sunday…
This? One of our biggest rivals?

DUDES!
A little laughter can be just as good as a fix for a team as determination and all that. Think about the scenes in the movies where the bad team starts to do better…. its always either a joking fun type of song in the background and scenes of them winning or a serious kick ass type song in the background with scenes of them winning.
So maybe this is Jeff Fisher’s way of blasting some cheesy pop music over the loud speaker and drumming up support for a 10 game win stretch!

Maybe his public relations person said “Hey Jeff. People on the message boards are saying you’re a broken record vanilla dude. Listen
Fisher has no lost the Locker Room. Although I would question the defensive play calling…the blame for being 0-6 squarely falls on the players they have looked god awful out on the field. I feel like everyone here is becoming some sort of lynch mob trying to find one person they can put all the blame on so they can feel better at night.
I think Fisher is calling out his players by doing something like this. Everyone here can feel different about it but that’s what I think he’s doing.
If you all feel that this franchise should return to what it was like before Fisher was head coach then so be it we can return to the days of having a coach for no longer then 4 years then rinse our hands and try again.
Taylor Mays > Eric Berry

I've said this before
and I’ll say it again- when all the players look so completely terrible, the blame can fall on nobody but the coaching staff. The only question is what part of the coaching staff gets most of the blame. A complete lack of energy by most players looks like a coaching problem.

The "Fire Coach Fisher" thing was stupid
last time because the rough years weren’t because of anything he had done wrong. The reason it makes sense this time is because every problem this team is having can be directly linked back to a bad decision he has made. (Minus VY. That one is on Bud.)

I think it's the personnel and Injuries
the secondary is ragged with injuries and the pass rush misses Haynesworth and suffered from the edge rushers aging. That leads to not being able to stop the pass. When you can’t stop the pass you lose, and lose often unless your O can go big play for big play like the 07/08 Saints.

reminds me of the Cubs season after they slumped hard. Nukers vs Tweekers.
I definitely think there needs to be a bit of a rebuilding project (mostly because Collins and VY are clearly not the answer at QB), but I think the franchise doesn’t need to be completely torn down for a successful rebuild.

You're living in the past, shake.
It’s a maxim of football that you have to know when the journey is over. At 15 years, Fisher has already bested the odds byb half a decade. And this idea that no one else can do the job is foolish on its face.
Look, Indy just got a new HC, and yet they’ve somehow managed to win some games. Ditto for the Broncos. Hell, even the Jets are playing well given their QB situation. It CAN happen. I don’t understand what’s so hard to see about that.

Not the lack of a punt returner
Not correcting the secondary issues in training camp
Not fixing terrible offensive playcalling in 3-4 games this year
Not adjusting for the loss of Haynesworth on the D-Line
THIS is the one mistake that puts it over the top. Wearing a jersey of another team and player as a joke.

I invest too much into this team with money and time for him to throw my feelings under the bus, especially during THIS SEASON, and try to make a joke in which he fails miserably.
I admit, if he does this when we are 10-0, I probably laugh about it. But we are not. We are oh and fucking 6, and our Coach, who I have defended through thick and thin, just taunted me by appearing publicly in our rival’s jersey.

At some point, this season became a joke in and of itself. I mock the Rams, Chiefs, Raiders, Bucs, Browns, Lions, Jets, and whoever else has found themselves in a shitty situation. Well, now that’s us. At some point it becomes funny in a sardonic sort of way. 35 fucking points in the 2nd Quarter. That’s just… unbelievable. And while Fisher deserves a lot of blame, at some point it becomes a joke, even for him. How could he have predicted THIS?? Starting 3 rookies at CB in Week 6 against a team that has one of the best passing attacks in the league? How the hell do you predict that?? How do you plan for it? How do you plan for Michael Griffin turning into Lamont Thompson? How do you plan for all the old players you hoped could hold up for one more year just completely folding and “getting old” overnight?

There is no parody in that. Jeff Fisher is still a Tennessee Titan. He didn’t go and host an event for the Colts or in the Colts honor. the ravens thing was IN NASHVILLE, as if steve was essentially picking the visitor’s sideline in what should be his home city, and actively rooting against the titans. (for the record i was also less pissed at steve than others because the titans threw him out like garbage and if he was holding a grudge the titans earned it.)
jeff was talking to a bunch of kids who probably got a kick out of it, and who also probably got to hear some valuable life lessons as well. he was generally trying to do well in the world and mentor some kids, which is a hell of a lot more important than the NFL. it was innocent self deprecating humor, not treason.

Well, I should add this
I wish he hadn’t done it. Obviously, the big reaction it gets is pissing people off. It adds another distraction to the team and now he will have to field questions about it at press conferences. It wasn’t the smartest move.
However, I can see the humor in it. It made me laugh. I also don’t think this sways me one bit on whether he should be fired or not. If the season ended today, I would fire him. 59-0 influences me much more than 0-6.
However, if we finish winning 6 or 7 out of 10, I might rethink my position. I still wouldn’t let this action influence it one way or the other.

I haven’t felt like that since 27-3 at halftime vs the Jags. Even against the Pats this Sunday I was more numb than kicked in the gut.
I do admire him for his ability to have a sense of humor at a time when it seems he will more than likely lose his job. I always thought Fisher was the type who understood it’s a game, and I completely admire him for it. This is a great example of that. The fact that it is a rival’s jersey makes it even funnier to me. It wouldn’t have been as funny if it was a Kyle Orton jersey.

It's more than a game.
It’s his job. It’s the same reason EVERYONE shit on Vince because some linked his poor performance to not having fun. He’s not coaching 10 years old’s in Pop Warner. It’s not about having fun. It’s not a game, it’s his profession.
I could give a shit about the context. My money pays his salary. As does yours, and Jimmy’s , and everyone else here who has bought merchandise and tickets. For that, I want his best effort and at least some sort of respect for the fans.
It would be one thing if it was him wearing a Peyton jersey to promote some sort of sportsmanship, or something hokey like that. But there is no setting where it is ever appropriate to wear a division rival’s jersey and say, “I just wanted to feel like a winner.” There’s no excuse.

It seems that at this point he would just want to lay low and not draw more attention to how bad HIS team is. I am not saying don’t do the event. I am just saying that it might not be the best idea to incite a fan base that is already on fire.
Do I think this prohibits his ability to coach this football team? No. His decisions this offseason and so far during this season have already ruined that for me.

I think it may go a bit deeper than that...
Its not just about the fan base here its also about the players. If I was a player on this team I would feel that this is somewhat personal. I mean they players practice hard, and play hard for this man, and then he goes in front of a crowd and says the whole feeling like a winner. It has to be like a slap in the face to his players. Joke or not how do you think the players will react. If a player was doing this I am positive the coaching staff would be all over their ass, saying this is not how a teammate (keyword TEAM) should act.
If he did not lose the lockerroom before this just may lose it for him

I guess I am letting the Patriots game influence me too much.
That game… I felt some of those players would have rather been anywhere else in the world, and it looked like that before it even got out of hand (so 3 minutes into the game).

I find this funny.
While Fisher certainly is no Shakespeare, think of this as comic relief. Amidst Shakespeare’s great tragedies, there was always a moment of lightheartedness for contrast.
And the Titans are without a doubt, a tragedy of epic proportions.

Comedic relief would be him walking out on the stage with a costume that gave the illusion that he had his head up his ass.

"think of this as comic relief"
if that’ scomedy then he needs to hire better writers. Not a damned thing funny about that. He could have worn a thousand other jerseys, but he picks the captain of a DIVISION RIVAL!??!!!?!
Would have been better if he’d have worn a Ray Lewis jersey signed by Brian Billick.

Michael messing up an in office wedding
It just felt old hat. They did it with Phylis’s wedding then Jim and Pams.
Plus I hate the whole “co-managers” thing. Honestly, I felt the Office lost a lot of its appeal for me once they started putting Michael in situations where in real life he’d be fired immediately and nothing ever happened to him. The 2nd season is my favorite, and the brilliance of that season to me is how he does things that wouldn’t get you fired. In fact, I’ve worked for some people who did some of the things he did in Season 2. However, about mid-Season 3 on, there isn’t anything he has done that a real boss could do and get away with.
Just one man’s opinion.

"I just wanted to feel like a winner."
You’ve been given godlike control over personnel, drafting, and players, and pretty much unchecked power over everything that happens in the organization. You can even bask in your unchecked authority and thumb your nose at Bud Adams’ request to play Vince Young, as we have now learned. That’s how much power you have been given in your contract.
The result of granting Jeff Fisher all authority in heaven and on earth with the organization: a false sense of his own omniscience. He fears not for his job, and feels free to openly mock the franchise in a public forum — the franchise that he now has TOTAL authority over eveything and anything that happens. He brought the franchise to 0-6 this year with his moves and his decisions — and now he feels free to mock it.
This is a man who thinks way too much of himself. It has been obvious with coaching decisions, roster decisions, and gametime decision all year. Does anyone actually think Jeff Fisher fears being fired, even if he goes 2-14?
Even at 0-6, this man has no sense of urgency. It’s all a big bucket of laughs for the man who feels he can never be replaced. He’ll just take YET ANOTHER mulligan on an entire season, and we’ll fix everything with late-round draft picks and be all better next season. Oh, and Kerry Collins will be back for the second year of his contract as a starter, because Kerry’s not the problem…………..
Good gosh, man. Get someone in here who feels like they need to perform, someone who fears for their job, someone who has a sense of urgency. How can anyone not take seriously a failure of this magnitude? What personal at what other job would feel so untouchable?
Make a Belli-trade: Draft picks in exchange for the rights to negotiate with Jeff Fisher. As I’ve said before: I keep hearing the "You CAN’T fire Jeff Fisher or 31 other NFL teams, 300 College Teams, 3500 High School Teams, two World Cup Soccer Teams, a handful of Major League Baseball teams, The U.S. Senate, and the United Nations will all be falling ALL OVER themselves for a chance to hire Jeff Fisher….." line. So I say we pull a Belli-trade. Hang him out there to Snyder and the bunch and see what kind of draft picks we could get in exchange for the rights to negotiate a contract with Jeff Fisher. Surely, we’ll have a bidding war since some teams would do ANYTHING for a coach like Jeff Fisher, right? RIGHT?!?!?!

that he watched the tape of this game and decided his team quit on him… So maybe this is a shot at his team?

Team quit
Hi, look first off I’m not here to flame or ridicule anyone, I just would like to offer my point of view about your above statement in regard to the team quitting.
To me it was very clear that not to far into the 2 quarter they mostly quit and in quit I’m referring to half effort tackling where there was a one handed attempt in many of the tackles and some not even putting in a attempt to make a tackle.
Secondly, coverage, at times when the pats receivers where running their routes the cushion was so much that at times it was difficult to determine if there was anyone covering at all. I know the one play that stands out in my mind was a long pass to Moss and the defender(can’t remember who) more or less watched him run by.
Again I’m not trying to ruin down your team just putting in my 2 cents.

i watched in disbelief many times that game as our corners and safeties just watched ppl go by. there was little effort out there. not saying they all quit, but many were half-assing it

There's a general rule about jokes
If you have to explain it, then it’s not funny.
Maybe it is some weird form of reverse psychology, to fire up the team. But I agree with those who say that it feels like a kick in the gut.

you have to explain the joke because the person(s) arent intelligent enough to grasp the concept……….

As a non-Titans fan, I think it’s funny.
But if Coach Caldwell showed up at an event in Indianapolis, took off his jacket, was wearing a Rodney Harrison jersey, and said “I just want to feel like a three time Super Bowl winner.”, we’d probably run him out of town.
Honestly, I think that maybe Fisher’s tenure in Nashville is coming to a close. His players have either completely tuned him out or they’re just not performing, and coming off the heels of a 13-3 season, having now lost twice as many games already as you lost last season, that’s a problem. Honestly though, I’m not sure you’re going to find someone that’s a better game-day coach than Fisher. I know Colts fans hate Tennessee games because he always does something crazy, like onside kick in the 1st quarter, that could give him just enough of an edge to get going.
However, you guys are looking at a top 5 pick in a loaded draft in 2010. You can get a real franchise QB next year and go from there. Also, you’re not mathematically eliminated yet. You can still run off 10 games and possibly get a wild card slot. So, buck up. You’ll be back.

Players
And yes, when things go wrong in sports, we have to find blame and right now it is in the leadership. A bad choice, bad play calls, etc. But a 59-0 a—whooping is not just the coaches fault. The million dollar men, or should I say boys of the the Titans gave up Sunday and showed no heart. Coaches can’t teach heart. This game was not the Univ of Florida vs Troy where we see those type of scores. These are nfl players who made a choice not to stand up for their pride and play hard. They are the true disgrace!

Oh, get a grip...
So he wore a damn Peyton Manning Jersey! Wow! Oh yes, this means he should be fired immediately, no questions asked, no thinking about it!
Are you reading your own posts, people?
Think about it… He wanted to raise some eyebrows. He probably also wanted to get the attention of his players, since his usual methods don’t seem to be working.
I’m betting one hell of a lot of thought went into picking that jersey. Notice that it wasn’t just any Colts jersey, it was Peyton Manning. If not for the Titans being in town, 90% of the residents of Nashville would wear one of those every Sunday.
I would be willing to be every dollar I have and will earn the rest of this year that Jeff would NEVER appear on stage in a Ravens, Jaguars, Texans, or Rams jersey. If you’re going to make waves by wearing another team’s jersey (and I don’t think this is a crime), what better jersey to wear than that of the SINGLE MOST POPULAR NFL PLAYER in your state?
I haven’t seen, has anyone asked what the players thought of this? I be some of them found it funny, and probably a whole lot more got the message. Apparently some of you didn’t.

Oh geez... get a grip.
http://blogs.tennessean.com/titans/2009/10/20/fisher-apologizes-for-colts-jersey/
He was introducing Tony Dungy, long-time coach of Peyton Manning at a charity event. Anyone who thinks he’s serious about “wanting to feel like a winner” by wearing a Manning jersey in public, and that it detracts from his team’s faith in him, most likely has never played any organizational leadership role.
He and his players are acutely aware the Titans are 0-6, he’s been there every game. You don’t think he wants to energize the team? C’mon. Like he said later – time to rethink things if you really are offended.
If Spagnuolo did this, I’d cheer him on for 1) devoting time and energy to giving back / charity; 2) having a sense of humor in such a dark time, to keep spirits up just a bit; and 3) perhaps putting a little motivation in the team.

An Outside perspective...
Be careful what you wish for…
I’m a Cowboy’s fan and I’ve seen the reaction to this on a few teams blogs and honestly most of the fans want Fischer to get fired so they can pick him up in the offseason. He is a very capable coach even if he isn’t a GREAT coach.
He has his gameplan to play conservative, fundamental football. Ultimately this is a valued commodity. So many teams lack the basic principle of not shooting yourself in the foot..(see Cowboys, Redskins, Texans) Others simply lack a vocal leader that instills confidence..I’ve never seen Fischer as a passive players coach.
I personally am a Cowboy’s fan and I would trade up for Fischer in a moment over Wade. This year I see Titan’s fans following the Marty Schottenheimer (sp?) formula of being frustrated by his vanilla-man image and wanting a change… but the fact of the matter is a lot of the titan’s players seem aged and complacent. It is perfectly reasonable to blame Fischer to some degree but wanting a house cleaning because of one bad season seems very knee-jerk from the outside looking in.
It is hard to find a capable coach in the NFL (see the 3 – 4 year Coaching carousel that 80% are on) and it isn’t something to be ditched quickly.
Was anyone calling for Fischer’s head at 13-3? Again..be careful what you wish for..
Wade Phillips has never won a playoff game as a head coach..he has lost 4 home playoff games.
His longest tenure as head coach was 3 years.
Only once did his record as a HC improve from one year to the next (by 1 game)

Fisher blew his 13-3 cache when that same team lost to a rookie QB

Amazing how now that they suck you want his head. no loyalty at all…every tema should take a leson from the steelers…3 coaches in thier history! thats loyalty….and i hate the steelers. but its a joke he was making and thats how it should be taken….titan fans are worse that the team.

Death to Fisher!
No NFL Coach should ever be allowed to have a sense of humor or any idea of what irony is! It doesn’t matter if he thought it was funny or not. He had the unmitigated gaul to wear another team’s jersey and then suggest that the Titan’s were not winners! Hang him from a goal post! This atrocity cannot go unpunished! I want him dead, I want his family dead, I want his house burnt to the ground, I want to go there in the night and piss on the ashes!
Or, maybe it really isn’t that important, it’s not like he was promoting dog fights, it’s not like he was raping a TV star, it’s not like he shot himself because his gun was too heavy for his sweats… ease up people, it was a charity event, he made a joke. Now if he wears that jersey to a game, castrate him!

my two cents
Maybe it’s easier to say this for me, because the colts are perennial playoff contenders, but if Dungy had done something like that when we were 3-4, i would have been cool with it. If caldwell did it this year and we were 0-6, I would want to kill him. Fisher, like Dungy, has proven that he is a good coach. A good coach does not get worse when he gets older (such as a runningback or wide receiver would), a good coach is a good coach. Period. It’s because of injuries, loss of players, improvement of other players, and just dumb luck that you guys are 0-6. Don’t get me wrong, i feel sorry for you, it must suck, but lighten up. A nine game winning streak is not out of the question, although very unlikely (see 2008-2009 colts) so just keep hoping and sticking by your team.

Don’t be ridiculous. The guy was just making a joke. Let him have fun and support him as you support the Titans because I know 110% that Jeff’s loyalty is still to the Titans, not the Colts.
