Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Nobody Quit On These Links Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Thank you to the crew at ESPN's Monday Night Countdown for taking a collective dump all over the steaming pile of garbage that is the team we follow 24/7/365.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Jeff Fisher is going into the bye week knowing that the rest of the year will determine if he has a job here next year, but he's trying to stay focused on saving the team, not himself.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Congratulations to the CBS crew for not finding the evidence that contradicted the evidence they found that contradicted the police investigation.  That's journalism on the march right there, folks.  To wit:

The report also corrects the timeline of the events before the deaths. Police initially said that Kazemi bought the gun from Gilliam in the parking lot of her job at Dave & Busters on the night after her DUI arrest. But Gilliam told detectives it happened on the Friday night, just hours before the shooting. Kazemi had clocked out early that night.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Fisher expects roster changes, but no coaching changes, this next week.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Further proof that the people of Denver have no fashion sense... those unis are fugly.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Nashville has to be in the running for the most miserable football cities in America this year: Titans (0-6), Vandy (2-5) and TSU (3-4) aren't warming many hearts at all.

There's no curse.

What there is is a lack of accountability on the team.

They seem to have a little bad luck this year also, aaron smith out for season, troy p’s been injured most of it, and although they arent carrying a record like the titans, they arent playing like a team that will repeat. The titans are just terrible regardless of stepping on a yellow towel, with advertisements and the steelers logo.
Why didnt rod hood play in the patriots game?

I think they should bring pacman back also. Mind as well since the season seems to be through. Hes got to be better than mouton and mccourty playing the whole game, and although mark jones can catch kicksoffs and punts, that seems its all hes capable of. Did anyone see eddie royal last night?

Someone named Gerald dropped this reply to the ESPN criticism. I thought it was good enough to repost here..

Game 1: the Titans go out and play a great game on the road against the defending Super Bowl champs, holding them to 10 points in regulation. Collins kills a promising drive with an INT and fails to put points on the board. Fisher says it wasn’t Collins’ fault, everyone else has to play better.

Game 2: the Titans rebound from the tough loss and play extremely well against Houston. Chris Johnson has a record day running and catching the football, and the Titans shut down Houston’s rushing attack, resulting in a 21–7 lead. What happens? Collins has an INT deep in Titans territory that Houston turns into a TD on the next play, fumbles untouched when the Titans were driving for a game-tying or game winning drive, and fails to move the ball or put points on the board when he isn’t handing off or dumping it off to Johnson. The Titans hold the ball for only 25 minutes, and the Texans, have nothing but 3 and outs and 1 minute “drives” in the second half (except Johnson’s 91 yard run), and after giving chance after chance after chance in the second half, Houston FINALLY wins the game. And guess what? Fisher claims that Collins played fine, that a defense which was on the field THIRTY FIVE MINUTES INCLUDING TWENTY MINUTES IN THE SECOND HALF gave up the victory.

Game 3: the Titans play great, overcoming two more Collins turnovers (the guy has 11 on the year) and horrible miscues on special teams to get within 3. What happens? Collins ends the game 0–13. For the third week in a row, Fisher comes out, says Collins is playing fine, that the team lost because of, well, everybody else. This time, the usually pliant media (pliant because they want to keep Young on the bench as badly as Fisher was) had to actually do their jobs and ask about the 0–13. So, Fisher comes back the next day and claims that there were 5 drops.

1. In what universe is it ok for a veteran dropback passer to misfire on 8 throws late in a close game on the road? Fisher was holding the WRs accountable for dropping 5 passes but not Collins accountable for misfiring the other 8? And also, it wasn’t one WR who missed 5 balls. It was several, so the blame was spread around. BUT COLLINS ALONE THREW EIGHT BAD PASSES! At least according to Fisher. And Fisher was saying “that’s OK. Don’t blame Collins for throwing 8 bad passes. Blame the WRs for not catching the 5 good ones!”

2. Except that the idea that “there were 5 drops” is ridiculous. Most of those 5 “drops” were on poorly thrown balls and would have required catches of a high degree of difficulty. Sure, you can say “these guys are making millions of dollars, they should be able to catch the ball” but what about the $15 million dollar man Collins being able to deliver a ball accurately and on time?

It was right after Fisher came out and blamed the 0–13 on the WRs, not holding Collins accountable AT ALL, that the Titans went into the tank. They went from losing their first three games (2 of them on the road, all against teams that went 8–8 or better last year) by 3 points to being down 30–3 at halftime to JACKSONVILLE. A JACKSONVILLE team that released their top 3 WRs and #2 RB from last season, lost their #4 WR from last season to an injury, and had released yet another WR the prior week. A JACKSONVILLE team that was missing their starting OTs — both rookies incidentally — for the game. So this was a team basically BACKUPS and NOBODIES at WR and OL, AND THE TITANS GAVE UP 30 POINTS BY HALFTIME! Oh yeah, and that is on defense.

On offense, they only scored 3 points during the portion of the game that mattered (please ignore Collins’ TD pass and run against Jags backups) AGAINST A JACKSONVILLE DEFENSE THAT CAN’T RUSH THE PASSER, CAN’T DEFEND THE PASS, AND GAVE UP 41 POINTS THE NEXT WEEK! That’s right, Jacksonville is having many of the same problems on defense that Tennessee is this year. Both the DEs they drafted two years ago, Groves and Harvey, are busts. The Jags tried going to a 3–4 defense to help Groves and Harvey out and it still hasn’t worked. The difference: the Jags are playing hard and the Titans have quit. And that is the same difference between a Titans’ team that played hard the first 3 games and haven’t shown up since.

Come on out and tell the truth. The Titans QUIT after Jeff Fisher tried to blame the WRs for Kerry Collins’ ending the Jets game 0–13, costing the Titans a game that they should have won against a lesser team. (Yes, I feel confident in saying that BECAUSE THE JETS HAVEN’T WON SINCE! They are 0–3 since beating the Titans!)

And who can blame them? No matter how badly Collins played, Fisher was never going to hold him accountable. He was ALWAYS going to put the blame on somebody else. So why go out and fight to win when A) your QB is likely to lose you the game and B) if he does, your coach is going to blame YOU, who actually played well, instead of the QB?

This isn’t about whether the team things VY should be playing. I haven’t read where any of the current or former players say so. Instead, this is about Fisher hanging them out to dry in order to defend a QB who cost the Titans the 1st 3 games of the season with his turnovers, inaccuracy and ineffective play. Well if you hang your players out to dry, guess what happens? THEY DRY OUT!

Oh, and deactivating Jevon Kearse to play Dave Ball, who has 4.5 career sacks and is on his 3rd team in 5 years? And when Vanden Bosch, who actually plays the pass rushing position in this defense, has 0 sacks this year and only had 4.5 last year? Real nice message to send to the team that you hung out to dry. Basically shows that while Kearse doesn’t have a future with this team after this year, KVB still does despite only having had 2 good seasons since not only the Titans signed him in 2005, but in his entire NFL career. That’s what continuing to play Collins means too … that Fisher plans to keep Collins on after this year, but he is obviously planning to release Young. That’s why Fisher’s puppet GM, Mike Reinfeldt, moved so quickly to squash Young and his agent when they talked about redoing his deal, and none of Fisher’s puppets in the media have talked about how Young can redo his deal to stay in Nashville just like Alex Smith did the same in San Francisco last year. They want it to be said that they HAVE to cut Young because he is being paid too much to be a starter. Except that in order for that to happen, Collins has to still be around and still be starting. That’s why no matter how badly Collins plays, he is still going to start, because if he doesn’t then Fisher has no reason to claim that Young is this salary cap victim. If Young is the starting QB, then holding onto Collins next season as the backup making $8 million is ridiculous.)

But again, the players know this. They know that NO MATTER HOW BADLY COLLINS PLAYS, Fisher is going to keep him in the lineup and BLAME THEM when Collins plays badly. I think Collins knows the same. Collins is thinking “next year, Young will be off the team, and Fisher will go out and get help on defense, and we are going to be right back where we were in 2008.” And why shouldn’t he think that? But the players … do you think that they LIKE Collins being the guaranteed starter this year and next year NO MATTER HOW BADLY HE PLAYS?

So yeah, the Titans have quit. It is obvious. The only issue is that the media is not telling people WHY they have quit.

Fisher hates VY so much that he’ll never start him and will continue to play KC because he has it in for Young.

I also caught some racial overtones when he also compared the situation to Kearse not starting vs. KVB.

The media also claimed that the Patriots blow-out of the Titans wasn't a coincidence

There are two stories out there about how Belichick wanted to get back at Jeff Fisher because of earlier comments he made about spygate, and to get back at the Titans for Bobby Wade’s hit on Rodney Harrison that took his knee out.

What the media hasn’t addressed or figured out yet, is how Belichick got the entire Titans team to go along with his evil plan. I’m sure the follow-up will be printed shortly.

That's not a conspiracy.

A conspiracy is when the rest of the NFL helps Belicheck get back at Fisher for those comments. This may have been payback—and it probably was, to some degree—but it was honest payback. Belicheck slapped Fisher in the face on national TV and then dared him to do something about it, and Fisher couldn’t. That’s not a conspiracy. It’s an ass-kicking.

I saw that, too.

Good points, all. I’ll disagree with studiocat’s summar and say that this is essentially about the lack of accountability on the team rather than about who specifically is playing QB. He makes the same point with the KVB vs. Kearse thing, and he’s right on. KVB has been terrible all season, and pulling Kearse IOT keep KVB on the field was a weird decision IMHO. I remember thinking so at the time.

That’s ludicrous. These guys know that their livelihood is not guaranteed and that they can’t afford to give up a whole season. Who in their right mind would just say “I’m done for this year. Maybe I will play hard next year if we get a new coach.”

Career suicide.

Wrong

The dropped passes example was in game 3 against the Jets. Before the implication that the team quit. He’s saying the team resents Fisher blaming ONLY the droppees (Gage, Scaife, etc.) instead of the passer (KC).

It’s cool if you thought the post was incorrect or even stupid. But you have misrepresented it twice now (the racist overtones and now this.)

I like your comments on this site for the most part, but you need to put down the coffee today. The overall message of this Gerald guy’s post was NOT that there was a conspiracy, but that the team quit on Fisher when he betrayed them in the post-game comments. (And bear in mind, in the NFL, quitting can mean just taking off the slightest mental edge – the difference in winning and losing in such a balanced league.)

The only conspiracy theory (and I admit it was a little out-there, but possible) was in regards to Fisher and his “puppets” trying to rid the team of VY, not the team conspiring to make bad plays to get the subs in.

I was gonna write more, but I think I’ve reached the end of the average attention span.

He is saying that guys are running at about 80-85% percent in order to avoid getting injured because they can see no point in putting in more effort. Why should they? Work hard, and it gets ignored. Loaf off, and it also gets ignored. So your best bet is to take long-term care of your career and leave the team as soon as possible.

what i got....

from this and agree with you, is that the team does see collins going in week after week mess up after mess up, and i feel the team does not agree with the call to stick with collins. the team has expressed before that they would like to see what VY can bring to the table, teammates has said he has looked good in practice/during the time he is not starting, and most importantly his head looks to be on straight. sometimes its better to get the players perspective b/c most times they go more deep in conversation with other teammates to get the real picture. all in all im sure they dont want to play with KC under center, not to say that they all quit already, but its hard to play when you are looking to put points up on the board and it gets killed by a stupid mistake by collins. time for VY.

He’s been in this system long enough. This is the same defensive system that we’ve used over the last number of years.

You mean the system we used when we had the prolific pass rusher and beast of a man Albert Haynesworth?

I’ll be the first to tell any shit-brained Texans fan that one man doesn’t make or break a defense. But dammit, you can’t, as a coach, expect a team to perform in the same way in the same scheme without a guy that makes the scheme work so well. AND THAT’S THE PROBLEM, FISHER. You’re not paying attention- we CAN’T run the same scheme, the same plays, because the biggest piece of the puzzle is missing.

Cecil is a hare-brained ninny that doesn’t deserve to call the plays if he can’t understand that. Put him back as defensive backs coach so he can crawl up our DB’s ass and get some production, and move that stink-fest front-office desk-jockey that is our current DB coach back to the front office.

Our defense is good, the players are skillful, and I refuse to believe otherwise. So, if it’s not the players, it HAS TO (READ: HAS TO) be the coaches.

Schefter on ESPN

Says Titans probably go with Collins for a few more games.

so....

so sad. and what sucks is that as soon as KC has a decent game (waiting for lightning to strike the first time) ppl are going to go back and be like “oh collins will be alright we should stick with him for the rest of the season”. it just pisses me off that he had the audacity to think that he deserved to be the starter and get a new contract. if i was in the titans front office id feel like a sucker.

Kerry Collins is not an elegant solution to the problem, but neither is VY

What is Graham Harrel doing these days? Texas Tech always has a quality QB, not that it translates to being good in the NFL. I remember when VY was the starter and he would have very poor games, Fisher would protect him to the end. He would not say an ill word about his performance. I don’t see a need to put in VY, I can see going after a different QB and see what happens.

*to think.....

he cant lead this team. i just cant see why VY is just not given the chance, does everybody not see the improvements and adjustment being made?

thanks

I agree. The season is all but over as far as the playoffs are concerned. Might as well see if he is the future of the franchise or not. All he has to do is complete more than three passes for positive yardage to be an improvement – and keep turn overs down to one a game.

BTW – While I still believe there might be something to the fact that the team has quit on KC, as was discussed in that re-post, the fact that our secondary has been decimated was overlooked. I’m sure that has something to do with ALL the passing yards.

Looks like the team kept everyone.

I can’t believe nobody got traded…

I had to stop arguing with drunks, Steeler fans, and all other fools.
It was making my brick wall jealous...

It comes at no shock that the team did not get anybody through trade

however what I can not understand is that they apparently did not shop any of our players. Again I did not realisticly think this was going to happen, but can someone please tell me when the writing is on the wall as it is with our team, that some of our key free agents will be let go of at the end of the year. Then why would we not try to dangle them out there for some compensation instead of letting them walk for free. Our season is already shit so whats the difference in losing them now for a trade or just giving them away during the offseason?
