Jeff Fisher Met with Bud Adams in Texas Last Week

A couple of interesting things to talk about this morning:

  • Mark Howard said on the radio this morning that Jeff Fisher flew to Texas last week for a face to face meeting with Titans' owner Bud Adams.  While I still don't believe that Fisher will be fired in season, this shows that Bud is awake and demanding some things change.  Things couldn't have gotten any better after yesterday's debacle.
  • Howard also said that Titans president and Bud's eyes and ears in Nashville, Steve Underwood, called GM Mike Reinfeldt in at halftime yesterday for a little talking too.  No idea what came of that, but there can't be anyone feeling good about their job up at Baptist Sports Park this morning.

Well...

That game yesterday is the kind of thing that gets coaches fired in mid-season. I mean, seriously, San Fransisco didn’t even look NEARLY this bad when they fired their coach and put in Singletary. And Hell, that’s worked WELL! I mean, that was the right thing to do. They damned near made the playoffs!

Enough is enough. It can’t get worse, and Fisher looks like an old man out there. It’s obvious that no one’s listening and no one cares. My only question is: Who do they replace him with?

Exactly.

If we had Mike Singletary on the coaching staff, I would be all for it.

But we don’t. So who would we get? You don’t just fire Jeff Fisher with no one to replace him with.

No thanks.

No more coaches who fumble around for a couple of years, then put together regular season super-teams who get ousted in the first round of the playoffs because of super-mega-ultra-hyper-Conservative play. These two might be tied for the most Conservative postseason philosophy in the history of the NFL.

Schottenheimer = Fisher.

Promote an interim to Head Coach for the rest of the year, then go after one of the available big dogs. No sense asking a quality coach to take the helm of the Titanic mid-voyage.

But it ain’t gonna happen. Bud ain’t eating that much contract.

Besides, I keep hearing the “You CAN’T fire Jeff Fisher or 31 other NFL teams, 300 College Teams, 3500 High School Teams, two World Cup Soccer Teams, a handful of Major League Baseball teams, The U.S. Senate, and the United Nations will all be falling ALL OVER themselves for a chance to hire Jeff Fisher…..” line. So I say we pull a Belli-trade. Hang him out there to Snyder and the bunch and see what kind of draft picks we could get in exchange for the rights to negotiate a contract with Jeff Fisher. Surely, we’ll have a bidding war since some teams would do ANYTHING for a coach like Jeff Fisher, right? RIGHT?!?!?!

Whom are you talking to?

I’d say Holmgren should get a shot, but if you’re trying to convince Fisher backers there’s anyone else who’s available in the entire universe worthy of giving a shot, you’re talking to brick walls.

They’ll systematically come up with lame excuse over lame excuse over lame excuse why they don’t want coach X, Y, Z, or A, B, or C — so now that we’ve explained why all the proven winners won’t do, we’ll just have to stay with Fisher – cause, I mean, how could we ever hope to do better than Jeff Fisher?

Let’s move on:
Holmgren, Gruden, Shanahan, ……you’ll seldom get a shot at such an accomplished bunch again. Let’s move on.

I am much more open to hiring a new coach

But a re-tread is not the answer. If we do, we should go young and talented. Tomlin, McDaniels, someone like that. Not some re-tread with old ideas, old schemes, and a resume that relies on accomplishments from the mid-1990s.

Any coach with his greatest work happening under the Clinton administration is not a good hire.

And I think Gruden is HIGHLY overrated, which is why I don’t like him.

I love Jeff Fisher, but

When the talent is there and the team is falling (FAR) short, you have to go beyond player performance and start looking at coach performance. You can’t put the blame on the players anymore, you have to suspect its in the organization and coaching.

That being said, I still dont know whether firing Fish is the right thing to do but there needs to be some accountability in the coaching staff

The "talent" is playing for the Redskins...

It amazes me that even you people don’t realize this.
Was it Fisher’s call to not pay Albert? If not, I don’t know why he’s getting the brunt of your criticism.
He’s an excellent coach, and there are 31 other teams praying that you guys will let him go. Fact.

Just sayin'

Your team was centered around a defense, which Albert was the focal point of. Now that he’s gone, your mediocre talent that was left behind is being exploited, and your offense which so badly needed your defense, can’t hold the slack.
Please tell me that you guys didn’t actually consider yourselves to be multi-dimentional. I hope my team will get to the point that I’m as delusional.

1 man

Does not a defense make.

Was Albert an integral part of the defense? Yes. Is our defense different now that he’s gone? Yup. Have the coaches made adjustments in his absence to shore up the rest of the defense? Not in the slightest.

Is one guy responsible for an 0-6 start? Let me answer that question with another question. Did you eat paint chips as a kid?

by TNTitans on Oct 19, 2009 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Your defensive talent does not look mediocre? and…
Your offense has been able to hold the slack?

You must be absolutely right, and I have no clue what’s going on with your team.

One last one to simmer on…
In these “years past” that Pride alludes to, was Fisher not the coach? So, it would stand to reason that he’s not the problem either, no?

Accomplish

While I was reading all of the “throwing spaghetti at the wall” reasons for your team’s collapse, including blaming one of the best coaches in the league, I thought I might remind some of you what happened this past offseason, as it relates to your team’s make-up.
It would appear to me that almost everyone outside of the titans fanbase knew exactly what your team was, and losing Al and your DC was going to have serious results. While you guys were putting guys like Finnegan and Griffin up on these elite pedestals, others were realizing just how much mediocre niche players like them needed a player like Al to make everything work.
“Don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone” ring a bell? Well, it doesn’t appear that some of you have gotten to that point yet, due to being prideful about what you thought you had.
Again, I can’t stress enough how much I’d enjoy Bud scape-goating Fisher, and I hope he does, and some of the folks here get their wish.
Then we’ll sing the “don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone” Fisher Remix for you.

I think Fisher got fired last week when he flew to Texas. These guys mailed it in because they sensed that Fisher was already gone. And the process to replace Fisher has been ongoing for a week now.

That said, if they need a head coach by the end of the day, I mean, it is the NFL. That can happen. Interview Dennis Green, McGinnis, and whoever else. Make decision at 4pm. Not a problem. It’s just a think of getting the plane tickets.

I mean, it’s quite a tough spot, no?

Me, I’d think seriously about installing an old-school single-wing option offense, using VY and CJ. What else can they do with the folks in house? Clearly they can’t pass. Do they need to?

A few years ago, we said that this team could go 8-8 without throwing a pass all season. Frankly, I’m ready to test that theory. VY may not be much of a throwing QB, but the guy can run and pitch, and with that speed, this team could at least beat St. Louis.

What Comes Around Goes Around

Hey Jeff-
What’s the matter? No so cocky now, are you? Last Thanksgiving in Detroit, you were taunting the 0-11, soon to be 0-12 Lions fans as you were embarrasing them 47-10. I hope you lose the rest of your games and then your job. There is no room in the NFL for classess coaches like yourself. At least the Lions didn’t get embarrased 59-0 an any time last season. You suck!

There's plenty of talent on the field.

It’s just been in the wrong position to make plays. But this is by no means the worst Titans’ team in history. They’re just playing bad because they don’t freakin’ care at all about whether they win or lose.

disagree

maybe one or two have checked out, but there are also guys like bulluck and cj and some of the linemen who are clearly still giving it 110% and who take these embarrassments personally. just because there is one jevon doesn’t mean you get to paint the entire team that way. i’m sure our two rookie corners were doing everything they could yesterday to cover moss and welker, they just were totally outclassed. the fact that we can’t win doesn’t mean people aren’t killing themselves trying to win. we got blown out because a decimated secondary faced the most talented passing attack in football and because the offense turned it over 31 times. unless apathy explains bad throws and fumbles, i just don’t see it. if anyone has checked out, it’s the coordinators.

the problem is that the places where we are bankrupt in terms of personnel also tend to be the most important positions on the field: QB, DE, CB (as well as off the field with two no show coordinators).

just maybe....

the snow had a little bit to do with that. the pats strive in the snow, and as we found out (which shouldnt be a surprise), the titans dont. and as hal stated, a VERY depleted secondary, and as i feard our safeties had to make sure they werent getting burned but instead were getting burned themselves. and brady is still brady, all this before stuff was just the rust getting shakin off. real tough loss, didnt think it would have been that bad, but it was hard to think we come out of this with the W. especially w/ KC at QB, but ill give him the benefit of the doubt and still say the weather was part of the problem. although his int was right to the CB (again) and VY’s was b/c Crump was not even looking for the ball, had he did so he had time to adjust and make the catch (maybe)

by TattedTI on Oct 19, 2009 10:10 AM CDT reply actions

How in the Hell does this happen?

Going into this game I was actually expecting a fired up Titans team. When the game first came on and I saw the snow on the field I actually thought this would be the great equalizer. I felt pretty optimistic, thinking that our D could stop the previous non exsistent running game of the pats and that the snow would slow down their passing attack and be a help to the young corners that we had out there.BOY WAS I WRONG!, the wheels came off before they even started rolling. The thing is it wasnt one thing in particular it was everything… playcalling, excecution, assignments. I mean how do we get to this point?

With that being said I have to say I am on board, with all of you, when things get this bad changes need to be made. It should start at the top of the mountain and roll down hill taking out everyone who is not pulling their weight. Although some trades could be made still before the deadline, who are we kidding besides ourselves? If Fisher is a gonner than why in the world would he make any changes? He said himself that he is not affraid of losing his job. So I really dont think we will see anything noteworthy on the trade front.

Sorry this is so long I am just trying to get it all out with the people who will understand.

Sincerly,

Frustrated, and pissed off, and embarrased and (oh you get the damn point)

Cann't believe it

Jeff fisher is one of the best coaches in NFL history, its a shame the way his players have let him down. Completely embarrasing and totally noncharacteristic of a jeff fisher coached team. The secondary ints doing rightt, they arent running right and the passing game int what it should be. If they fire jeff fisher itd be the dumbest thing they could do. 80% of the time his teams are good and to fire him over one disapointing season would be a knee jerk reaction they need to reconsider.

by oddballbama on Oct 19, 2009 10:52 AM CDT reply actions

Dude.

Stop apologizing. These guy laid an egg because they are terrible. At 59-0, there is enough blame to go around. That’s enough rotten egg that it smears the whole team. THEY ARE ALL AT FAULT. 59-0 leaves no room for anything but scapegoats.

The team wasn’t prepared. At all. Yeah, okay, a couple of rookies in the secondary vs. that offense is probably not going to really help actually win you the game. Fine. But then, why could the Titans at LEAST score a field goal? I mean, 2/12 for -7 yards passing?

These guys won 10 games in a row last season. Since then, they’ve done almost nothing. This team actually crashed LAST SEASON, but they’ve been blind to the reality. And now, almost a year later, they can no longer ignore reality because reality straight up slapped them upside the head, and still we have to hear people apologizing for grown men who get paid a lot of money and still don’t have the pride to go out and do their jobs.

It’s enough already. Something has to change. Burn down the building and start laying new bricks. The foundation’s rotten. Time to start over from scratch.

Simplification is the key

maybe theyve gotten too complicated. they need to try simplify everything like the raiders, and allow the natural athleticism work to their advantage.

by oddballbama on Oct 19, 2009 10:54 AM CDT reply actions

Solution

At this level, the talent from team to team is very similar. So why are some teams 6-0 and others are 0-6. The answer is the 3 D’s. #1-Desire -You have to want it more than anything you have ever wanted in your life!! #2-Discipline-Have to know what your assingment is on the field at all times and execute!! #3-Dedication-Have to give it your all-leave every drop of blood, sweat and tears on the field!!

by titansfan4ever on Oct 19, 2009 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

I’ll toss in my two cents seeing as though I’m an outsider.

I actually think the Titans’ offense could be pretty dynamic if they just had a good QB. It’s time the Titans’ FO faced the facts part ways with VY, keep Collins as a backup and draft a QB in the first round this offseason.

The entire defense needs retooled as well. KVB is an adequate pass rusher and I’ve always liked Kearse because he’s a UF alumn, but they’re over the hill and intensity doesn’t necessarily make up for lack of athleticism.

Bulluck has already stated he doesn’t think he’s going to return to the team next season, and if that attitude I’d let his ass walk. Go young in the draft, don’t try to settle on trades or free agents.

And obviously the biggest weakness of this team is the secondary. This is where choosing the right head coach comes into play.

There are two people in my mind, giving the Titans two avenues to improving. The question is, do you want the defense to improve? Or do you want the offense to become elite? If Bud fires Fisher at the end of the season hiring Leslie Frazier as the HC would instantly make that defense better. He was the secondary coach and current defensive coordinator for the Vikings. The guy knows what he is doing and someone needs to give him a shot.

Now, if you want your offense to be more consistent and want a good teacher to mold a young QB, Mike Shanahan is your guy. The guy knows his shit when it comes to running offenses and this is no-brainer to me.

However, the Colts fan in my hopes Bud Adams keeps Fisher around so the Titans can suck for a few more years.

KEEP JEFF FISHER

Said it before, will say it again, Letting Fisher go would be the biggest mistake we’ve ever made. Other than the Patriots and the Steelers, there aren’t many teams that wouldn’t kill to have Fisher. Whenever you run into tough times fans always scream for the head coach to be replaced. This is the same coach that gave us the best record in the NFL last year. Fire Fisher, make wholesale replacements on our squad, and seasons like this will become the norm for many years, as opposed to the aberration. Every team has to expect peaks and valleys. Fisher has brought the team back from valleys twice before in his career. I have no doubt he’ll do it again. We Titans are damn lucky to have him.

by Gringo Bastard on Oct 19, 2009 12:21 PM CDT reply actions

Couldn't disagree more...

…this is NOT a snap judgement of a coach entering year five of his tenure, this is a long-termjudgement of a coach who has been here 16 years – more than adequate time to get the job done.

What you see now is the result of coaches he chose, personnel decisions he made, and motivation he’s supposed to provide.

A good regular season last year does not grant eternal immunity from a horrible season this year, or seven years’ drought from a playoff victory.

It’s time to move on.

The best coach we could get...

…is, unfortunately, dead. Several of them are, in fact. I don’t think the cloned mutant offspring of Ara Parseghian, Vince Lombardi and Herb Brooks could save the Titans at this point.

Our problem has always been that we seem to play down to our opponent. That hasn’t changed since I first started following the Titans. And I don’t expect it to.

This season’s lost. And, bless his heart, Jeff Fisher has turned into another Phil Fulmer in the off season. Maybe it’s time for him to give up, go home, and let Cowher turn us around.

Or maybe we need another Mike Ditka…

do ppl think fish is the problem, yes he should assert himself more and take control of the play calling, but other than that and sticking with KC for so long what has he done to have a “fire him” talk start? the man just led us to the best record in the league. he cant just hop into the players bodies and play for them, he doesnt have the power to heal or bring youth, he cant hang onto the fumbles for players. he is a good coach, he is a players coach (it doesnt matter if its your super bowl MVP or a bench player, hes gonna be out there if he ever goes down, thats one of the reasons he is a good coach), and he does put us int he position to win. he cant hold on to the ball for eddie when ray lewis stripped it or INT’d it, he cant do anything for dyson to pick up that extra yard. so why does he get the blame for our secondary not being healthy, or our players not playing up to par, he has no control over any of that. the players are in charge of their own destiny when they are set up to win, sometimes it happens sometimes it doesnt.

No.

You don’t lose by the largest margin in NFL history and give up 5 TD passes in one quarter and just get to blame it on a beat up secondary. No one loses that bad. EVER. That’s tied for the worst loss in NFL history and the last time it happened was over 30 years ago.

People continue to point to last year as some sort of a reason that Fish should stay on. It’s even more reason as to why he should be fired. It’s basically the same team. And, he’s 0-6. Albert is missed, badly. But, 0-6 and losses like this and two before it have more to do with coaching.

And, I’ve got news for you. Things like fumbling, and catching the ball can be taught. It’s fundamentals. It’s what coaches are paid to do.

blaming fumbles and drops on a head coach in the nfl is crazy

nfl coaches dont teach fundamentals. professionals are expected to make those basic plays the moment they arrive.

Sort of.

I guess I wasn’t being clear, though, above. Fumbling and catching can be coached was really the only point I was making with the last statement. I don’t that’s on the head coach, directly. It’s on the positional coach.

But, Fisher is involved with the hiring of his staff. And, for a team that has been terrible with drops the past two or three years now, it falls on Fisher, even if it’s indirectly.

Come on.....

you can coach a player until the day they die, but THE PLAYER is responsible for catching the ball and holding onto the ball, as i was trying to explain is that no coach can be names responsible for THE PLAYER to drop or not hold on the ball. they can’t coach real game experience, you dont exactly want bulluck in practice everyday loading up on other teammates the same way ray lewis would load up on his prey in a meaningful game. and if u still dont get it, coaches cant become their players to make the catch for them.

extra couple of pennies....

if i had a pick of who i would like to have back for this season, id take schwartz over haynesworth in a second. players will come and go, unfortunately so do good coaches, and we lost a good one to detroit (can’t blame him, but dammit!).

Tiki Barber disagrees with you.

He says that Tom Coughlin got him to stop fumbling and that although he hates the man, that his best years in teh NFL were a direct result of Coughlin’s emphasis on discipline.

the coaches are paid....

to teach the fundamentals of how to fumble the football? your gonna have to tell me where that happens. in your way of thinking, i guess that can be taught??? and ill agree it can be taught HOW to hold on to the football, but not really TO HOLD onto the football. only the player knows his own mechanics of what he needs to do to hold onto the ball(strenght, positioning, and how he is going to absorb the hit in live game situations), and thats why when fumbles do happen, it’s their own fault.

too bad.....

he wasnt disciplined enough to see a good thing right in front of him. i wonder how he felt really when he saw his team raise that lombardi trophy the year after he retired. and once again, coughlin can teach him more on how to hold on to the ball, but him holding on was done all by himself, not a touch of coughlin in a real game.

All I can say is...

While I do not agree with a lot of Fisher’s decisions this year, At this point I really feel the only coaching change needed is Chuck Cecil.

at least cecil

can blame injuries and inexperience (his own) at least a little bit. but there is no excuse for hemierdinger to approach this season with such a retarded game plan and refuse to do what our offense is built to do.
