Ask Pats Pulpit
Hello Titans faithful,
thought I'd drop by and get some interaction rolling between us. Your fearless leader has done the same over at Pats Pulpit. My New England Patriots have plenty of issues to work out and it's been a frustrating start to the season for us. Injuries, Brady not connecting with Moss, receivers not working out (Joey Galloway), we've had some ups and downs.
Fire away with anything you'd like to know about my team. I'll do my best to check back on a regular basis to get you answers.

Defensive Weakness?
What worries you about the Titans offense and where might they exploit the Patriots defense?

Passing
Even though New England’s pass defense is currently ranked 13th based on NFL stats, I have a problem with how soft the corners have been playing; it’s the classic Belichick bend-but-don’t-break D that usually drives me batty. Our safeties (Meriweather, Sanders, McGowan) have done a good job protecting against the deep ball. If Tennessee can develop a good dink and dunk, our D could have a hard time with that.

Wes Welker
It seems as if he has been strugling with injuries this season. Is he finally healthy, and if so will he become Bradys go to guy over Moss?
Welker tweaked his knee in the preseason
But since he was put back in I haven’t seen him limping, although I wouldn’t say he’s 100% (but tell me which football players are?) Brady will go to Welker as much as he can. The Broncos tried to take him out of it as much as they could last week, as McDaniels knows how important he is to our offense.
What we need to make Welker and Moss as effective as possible, is to have a third WR out there that needs to be covered as much as they do. Joey Galloway was supposed to fill that role for us, but so far he’s been a disappointment as well as a healthy scratch for the last two games in a row. In place of him the Pats have been using Sam Aiken (special teamer) and Julian Edelman (more of a Welker-type slot rec.), or using some combination of tight ends. Brady’s favorite TE, Ben Watson left the game with a head injury last Sunday so who knows how they’ll divide up the duties this week.
The Pats haven’t had a 40 yard pass yet this season, but not because Moss hasn’t been open – he has, frustratingly so for the fans – but because Brady either didn’t see him or overthrew him. If Moss is open and Brady can get him the ball, Moss will get it. If Moss has double coverage, then Welker will be the go-to guy.
Keep the faith!
Thanks
That was a great answer. I am not a fan of the Pats at all, and with that being said have not watched them play this year. However I do like Welker, and was wondering why his numbers were not on par this year.

He's still on track for over a hundred catches after missing 2 games

Do you think Tom Brady's inconsistency will evewn out as the season goes along
or is it something the Pats will have to deal with the rest of 2009? Also, is it just sitting out a year and the knee injury, or do you think there is more to the problems Brady is occasionally having, such as pass rushes are getting to him more often than I remember in a long time?

That's the million dollar question
and we’ve had blogs dedicated to it on PatsPulpit.
Three possibilities:
1) The knee affects his throwing mechanics, he doesn’t trust himself to step into them.
If that was it, I think they would have seen it on film and fixed it.
2) Albert Haynesworth hit during the preseason that drove his throwing shoulder into the ground. (See he’s still helping you on the Redskins).
If that is it, it will take time to heal. We just wait.
3) Time off and developing timing with his receivers. They were actually Cassel’s receivers last year, and they adapted to him.
If that is it, then they should improve over time.
Any combination of the above equals wait and see for us impatient fans. I think we’re more on Peyton’s schedule from last year, where he got it together around midway through the season. That’s the hope. Ask again around week 10, and we’ll see.
The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

And the possibility its the deterioration of the Offensive Line?

Maybe, but it's not like he hasn't had time to throw
He just misses by a country mile on some passes. Or he expects one route option and they run a different route option making it look like he’s off by a country mile. Who knows?

I think it's just timing and Welker being injured
Manning was the same way until after he lost to us last season about mid-way through the year. From then on, he’s been lights out.
I expect the same return to form from Brady and his gang.

Do you think
maybe some of the offensive problems are to do with losing your offensive coordinator?
As long as we have Peyton we will always have a chance to win.
I think that's certainly part of it
McDaniels was no Charlie Weiss, but he was capable. Oddly enough, I consider 2008 he’s best year, even better than 2007. In ’08, he had to deal with a lot more (loss of Brady) and still managed to help the Patriots knock on the door of a divisional championship.

The Pats should be ashamed of themselves.
Running up the score is bush league.
And you know what they say about “payback”.
The teams the Pats have ran up the score on will get their revenge when the Pats team becomes bad someday.
My advice to Pats fans is be ready for it…

They didn't run up the score
They could have hung 90 on us if they wanted too.

I didn't want to comment here because of the way the game turned out
but I will to just clear the air.
1) Chris Johnson is impressive, the defense went in trying to specifically stop him and he still busted out a few nice runs.
2) Brady has had trouble connecting this year, including the opening drive where they were stopped for a FG. Our offense needed that second quarter to get their confidence back. It was ugly to outsiders, I’ll admit, but we got the Colts and Miami soon and we need our offense back.
3) I think having Brady out there for the first drive in the second half was to see if the defense had adjusted. If the Titans could have had a stop against Brady (not the backup) it would have given new life to your defense. When that didn’t happen, he was pulled to give our only backup some practice.
4) Keeping the better receivers in was to give Hoyer better practice should someone take Brady’s knee out again. He doesn’t have tons of NFL experience, but he has a good head on his shoulders.
5) I’m glad to see them switch Young in. Unlikely he could have changed the game, but at that point it’s just live practice for him. At some point they’ve got to decide if he’s the go to guy.
6) They could have gone for it in the last two minutes, but just ran time off the clock and didn’t punt. This allowed the Titans 36 seconds and the middle of the field for a couple plays. They chose to end the game which is all good.
7) The Cardinals lost to the Patriots by a large margin last year in a snow storm. They used the experience to reinvigorate themselves and ended up going to the super bowl. Without that experience, who knows. I hope the same thing happens with the Titans.

no such thing in pro sports
if you don’t want the other team to score, stop them. otherwise shut up and take your whooping and then go cry about it over your fat paycheck.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
They went for it on 4th down when the score was already 52-0.
Sorry, but that is a classless, punk move in my book.
Good thing guys in the NFL have a long memory because you know what they say about “payback”…

they went for it on 4th and 6 on the Tennessee 31
giving the Titans a chance to stop them instead of going for the easy 3 point field goal. It was too close to the Titans end zone to punt. If the Pats went for the FG, you’d still be crying about piling on the points. This is a no-win situation in your world.
Without trying to be argumentative here, would it really have been good sportsmanship to take a knee at this point, to deliberately throw an incompletion, or spike it to hand it over on downs?
The Titans simply surrendered in the second quarter. Their receivers couldn’t catch passes, their running backs couldn’t hold onto the football, and Collins had trouble completing the exchange from center. Instead of just complaining, what would you have had them do in that situation? And if you still think they should have gone for the points, then you can’t really complain about ‘running up the score.’
Keep the faith!
i dont think running up the score is a bad thing. if my team could do it, i would too. it just expresses your dominance as a team. to me it’s not that unsportsmanlike. the nfl is a competative sport. it’s the same as when some of our players stomped the terrible towel. it’s just the nature of the sport. i think over-celebrating is a ridiculous penalty.

I remember back in the day when…
Jerry Glanville & Sam Wyche was doing that BS to each others team.
I seem to remember the (then) Oilers losing a game by a score of like 61-7.
I was glad when that BS stopped…
