Tennessee Titans vs. New England Patriots Series at a Glance

Helmets_pats_medium

The Patriots lead the all time series between the two franchises 21-16-1.  The last time these two met was 2006 in week 17.

As I am sure you remember, turned out that a win in that game would have put the Titans in the playoffs.  The Titans lost the game 40-23 and ended the dream.  You might also remember from that game that Bill Belichick  put 90-year old Vinny Testaverde in the game and let him throw at touchdown with 1:47 left up 33-23 to extend Vinny's 30-year streak of throwing at least one touchdown.  Keith Bulluck was none to pleased with that and had a nice staring contest with Belicheat that got him a 15-yard penalty.

The last time the Titans played in Foxboro was the 2004 Divisional Playoff game that ended on a Drew Bennett drop.  Oddly enough, that one still hurts as well.  I remember exactly where I was sitting when it happened.

The first ever match-up was in December of 1960 between the Houston Oilers and Boston Patriots.  As you can tell from the picture both teams will be wearing their throwbacks on Sunday.

Playing the Patriots is good enough to get us CBS's #1 broadcast team of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms.  I cannot wait for the Tom Brady love-fest.

Here's a thought

Collins throws 8 touchdowns to tie Simms at 28 for all-time passing touchdowns.

Awesome, right?

The Titans rush defense is the only bright spot

the consequence maybe more throws from Brady.

I wish I had Wes Welker on my fantasy team this year. Looks like a dream matchup for him.

Even scarier thought – will this be the game Brady & Moss return to long ball form?

If you could clone him

every team would want one. Which is so funny, because no team wanted him.

Tom Brady love fest?

How about more of a What’s-wrong-with-Tom Brady-fest, or the Comparing-Brady-with-Manning-last-year-fest, or maybe a Let’s-analyze-how-his-throwing-is-off-and-he’s-missing-his-receivers-fest?

That’s where the media is these days, comparing Brady’s record-breaking year in 2007 with how he’s been throwing the first 5 games of this season. Great vs. Lousy. So, I’m expecting no love-fest on Sunday. Now if you were playing the Favres Vikings… different story. Although it must have been a Manning love-in last week (gag).

Keep the faith!

As a Patriots fan, what are your expectations this week?

What are the Patriots weak spots this year?

Bring Back Vince Young!

I'll jump in, too

Weak spots:
Secondary has been ON (Ravens game) and OFF (Broncos game) poor tackling and large cushions. If you guys play what they give you, you can march down the field like the Broncos.
Depth is short at linebacker, Mayo was out for a few weeks and is back, but reps may be limited. We even brought back 40 yr old Junior Seau, to get some depth.
We’ve been playing mostly 4-3 defense this year (even though we’re traditionally 3-4) because we’re short on ‘backers. With Seau in, we’re hoping we go back to 3-4 and get more pressure. I expect you guys to establish the run right away, but if they’re smart, they’ll steer clear of Vince Wilfork.

On the Offense, Tom hasn’t played like Tom. Peyton took awhile to come back last year, so we’re hoping that is what is going on. No passes beyond 40 yards, period. Sucks.
Welker was out for two weeks, and has been playing at around 80%. At full health, he’s nigh uncoverable, but between his knee and Brady’s arm, it has been ugly at times.
Past Moss and Welker, our receiver corps is spotty. Galloway has forgotten how to run routes, catch passes, and even what the out of bounds lines mean. Edelman is fast and Welker-like, but he’s a QB turned WR, he hasn’t picked up all the subtletys. Aiken is mainly a special-teams player, that has gotten more reps because we need another receiver. I expect double coverage on Moss, a fast DB on Welker.
In the running game, Taylor is out, Maroney isn’t decisive (close to a bust), Morris is consistent, Faulk is mostly a third down back, and Benjarvus Green-Ellis (Law Firm) hasn’t played much this year, although he showed flashes last year. I expect the Titans to try to stuff the run right away.
Our starting left tackle is out, so I expect to see pressure on that side to test the backup.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

The way Bellichick talks up the Titans, you'd think they were 5-0.

There’s no way the Pat’s go into this game without respect for the Titans. You’ve got way too many playmakers. I only hope that CBS decides to let me see the game here. It should be good.

Opponent's Run/Pass Balance

Right now, every time a team runs against us, they do us a favor. It’s been that way all season. Sitting back in coverage means Moss has a big day… blitzing means Edelman and Welker have big days. While the secondary’s weakness has been exaggerated by potentially correctable mental errors, the unit will be without 3 important starters. I just don’t see how this works on defense.

Welker looked balky all game against Denver, if he can’t go then there may be hope.

He's the guy that moves the chains, all right

With the Brady-Moss deep ball broken right now, they may choose to double Welker and force Brady to connect to Moss. Might lead to some picks.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.
