Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Rebuilding Mid-Nosedive Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 0-5? Nosedive.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Terry McCormick says that the starting of Hayes and the benching of Kearse are a sign of rebuilding.  Another depressing fact in this article: the Titans are one of four teams who remain winless, but we're the onlny one of those not sporting a rookie head coach.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 A Number of Things Jim Wyatt tells us about the Titans this week includes 2 gems: Justin Gage has disappeared and Reggie Hodges has the 2nd lowest net punting average in the NFL.  It's time to give Trapasso a shot out there.

Follow us through the jump for the worst idea to break our losing streak...

Star-divide

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Sounds like Keith Bulluck's annual charity fundraiser/wine tasting was a rare win for a Titans player this year.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Our terrible DVOA rankings prove that our ineptitude is no mirage, but the result of long, arduous and consistent failure to play good football.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Guaranteed not to get us off the schnide: Cuddle Parties.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 WR Matt Jones worked-out for the Bucs and was passed up on for Yamon Figurs... ouch.

Point of contention:

I’m not really sure you can adequately argue we’ve begun a rebuilding process when – with all the points noted in your post and links – we are still going to field Gage, Hodges, and Collins as starters instead of Britt, Trapasso, and Young – three glaring examples of evidence to the contrary.

I don't think

I’d call starting VY part of the rebuilding process. I’m pretty sure if he’s not playing at this point, they already know what they have in him. I just wish they would come out and be honest. Don’t call Vince the quarterback of the future, and then not play him when we should be looking toward the future.

Good thing we let Chris Simms walk...

…so we could keep our “QB of the future.”

I confess...

I didn’t watch the last game. I read a novel and went to bed early. I was even in Tennessee over the weekend, and I still only watched the Vols and the Bengals. In fact, I even bought my daughters a pair of matching Orange t-shirts.

Eh... What's the point?

His contract—and Kearse’s—are up at the end of the season.

Wake me up when it’s time for the play-offs, and I’ll get on somebody else’s badnwagon. Watching this team play the way that they’re playing ruins my whole weekend every time I do it.

Respecfully Danno, you're opinion seems to change with the wind.

After the Texans game last year, you were calling for Vince. Then, you were on the Kerry bandwagon after Pittsburgh. Then, you completely wrote off Vince after the Colts game.

With a team this bad, you can afford to be less hasty with your conclusions. It’s reasonable to not expect much out of him, but I also think it’s worth holding off final judgment until you’ve seen more data.

by SuperHorn on Oct 15, 2009 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No!

Snap judgements are the ONLY judgements

Heh. Seriously, it’s true that I’ve been fickle with my support of both QBs. IMHO neither guy has really earned any lasting support.

With that said, you’ll not find a positive statement from me about VY since last year’s second Colts game.

DannoE

"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."

by DannoE on Oct 15, 2009 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's fine.

But, there’s a difference between “not giving a positive statement” and “not wanting to see him any more for any reason whatsoever.”

Even if you don’t expect much, I think we can all agree that it at least adds a little intrigue to the games. And, for now, that’s better than nothing.

by SuperHorn on Oct 15, 2009 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, okay.

But the response was to a guy saying that I was only suggesting Simms because “anybody” is better than VY, “just not to see VY out there.” Like I hate VY personally or something. And I do not. I don’t think VY is a good answer for the Titans at QB, and personally, I feel like he has nothing to prove to anybody because, right or wrong, he just doesn’t have the drop-back skill-set you need in an NFL QB. But Chris Simms does, and in fact, in that same Colts game in which VY stunk up the joint, Simms played okay.

So, bottom line, the intrigue that I personally want to see would be Simms in a Titans uniform proving that HE (and not VY) could potentially be the future of the franchise. But… like so much else during this offseason, the FO screwed that up, too.

That sais, I’m starting to really, really hope that VY will go sign with either the New York Sentinels or whatever UFL team winds up in Hartford next year. He’ll probably DOMINATE in the UFL. And if Hartford is really gonna get a team, I’m thinking strongly about buying season tickets.

He's the back-up on the 4-0 Broncos.

And the fact that he’s a back-up on one team has no bearing on whether or not he’d be the BEST QB on the roster in Tennessee.

Look at it this way: Kenny Britt is a back-up to Nate Washington. What does that tell you about how successful Britt could be with the New Orleans Saints?

Interesting that

our overall DVOA ranking is very close to our average power ranking. That would seem to validate the two numbers and indicate that our 0-5 record is no fluke. It also indicates that I was very wrong in thinking, until the Jags game, that this was largely bad luck, injuries, and a few bad calls. Mea culpa. I have adjusted my position accordingly.

by JimR on Oct 14, 2009 8:50 AM CDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

A good bit of it is playcalling, though, IMHO...

…versus talent on the field. I mean, smarter play calling could have garnered a win or two given the way the first two games went. This team is still not good, but it could have achieved averageness.

when I said “a few bad calls”, I meant play calling, not the officials (although, there have been both.). But, you are right. It’s more than a few poorly chosen plays being called.

VY's "reluctance"

Evidently, Gary Estwick wasn’t necessarily on board with the decision to scrutinize Young’s looking at the scoreboard. When asked whether or not he thought the Tennessean was hypocritically “looking too deep” with the VY scoreboard flap, Estwick responded "I agree, although I’ll also remind you that I didn’t write that story… "

Word on the street in Nashville

is that in addition to glancing at the scoreboard when be was told to go in, VY also blinked his eyes a couple of times. Somebody needs to analyze that. I don’t think we want a QB who blinks in the face of adversity.

C'mon JimR.....

Let’s be real here, you just don’t like Vince Young. What else he was supposed to do? So what if he did? The game was already decided. 0-5, your coach still sticks with a quarterback responsible for that, and he’s supposed to be overjoyed in mop-up duty? Sun-Tzu said in The Art of War: “Never fight a war you can’t win.” Despite you biased opinion, the Streets of Nashville are talkin’. Do you hear them? They are chantin’: “Start Vince Young!” What you really need to analyze is why Kerry Collins is losing games in the First and Fourth Quarters. I’m sorry, but you’d probably make an excuse for that as well.

What’s a matter Grammy? Is the chorus getting under your thin skin? Are getting tired of having to compile your ever growing dossier so you can profile the “idiots”, “dumbasses” and “true fans”? I didn’t notice that when I signed up on this blog that I had to answer the question of why I showed up and how long I planned to stay. Also, a list of the “acceptable” players to be a fan of denotes a “true fan” should have been provided to determine if this “true fan” site was appropriate for me. This site will be better when you quit slinging personal insults. It’s obvious that Mr. Deebo misinterpreted the initial comment and didn’t check the poster’s allegiance. I guess that warrants a personal attack on your part. And I’m sure I’ll get a personal attack from the Official MCM Hater (and Profiler).

The only reason I hate you and think you are a “dumbass” and “idiot” and not a “true fan” is because you are not a true fan. You only came to Music City Miracles because of your man-love for our backup quarterback. You only talk bad about other players on the roster, and attack other posters because they don’t have that same man-love for our backup quarterback. Therefore, I hope that when our backup quarterback leaves, which he will after this season, that you leave as well.

The Pats really haven't been playing all that well this season.

Their Defense is suspect—in fact, their secondary is probably not a lot better than TN’s, and their pass rush is also nearly non-existent. And the Offense hasn’t been as good as it was. Moss is showing his age, and Welker has been out, and Brady’s chemistry with his receivers seems a bit off.

With all of that said, the Pats are still MONUMENTALLY better than the Titans right now, and Belicheck is probably really looking forward to the opportunity to embarass one of the few coaches in the NFL as well-respected as he is. I’m expecting them to be VERY sharp in this game and to make a real run at putting up 50 points.

Agreed.

On paper, this ought to be a good game. Different defenses but similar problems. And yes, the Pats have much better WRs, but the Titans have RBs that are at least that much better than the RBs from New England.

The difference IMHO is in the QB. I’m not one to say that usually, but in this case it’s actually true. These are similar teams with similar problems, only NE has a QB that can actually play and make it happen when he needs to.

Still, the Pats are 3-2 and about what I think we’d have expected of the Titans if not for KC’s inexplicable revision to his career norms.

Is it too much to expect?

Since Denver had success with their version of the Wildcat, obviously McDaniel’s pretermined that NE had a weakness to exploit using certain formations and plays.

Is it too much to expect that our offensive planning this week might look to exploit those weaknesses as well?

Will we see VY in the Wildcat? Will we see CJ taking direct snaps?

Wait

So you mean if VY is the quarterback, and we run the wildcat, and VY lines up as the quarterback, then we’ll be running the wildcat with VY as the quarterback? But isn’t that just like all those times when VY just lined up as the quarterback in not the wildcat, except this time he’s the quarterback in the wildcat, which is exactly like him being regular-type quarterback (not in the wildcat) and, thusly heretofor, the same as wildcat quarterback vince young catquarter backwild?

if the two....

QB’s can run the wildcat out there in MIA im pretty sure it can be done with VY. its puts the ball in his hands either to run (which he has the god given ability to do) or pass (he is a decent passer despite what ppl say, especially if KC is what we have to base it on). and it puts CJ and lendale both on the field, which can be productive either way.

In fairness...

…I think I personally would be inclined to call it a “Wildcat” offense (vs. a regular offense using our backup QB) if both QBs were on the field. Alternately, if you had VY on the field but then direct-snapped it to CJ, that would be a “Wildcat” play, versus a regular play starring VY at QB.

In either case, the thing that makes it a specifically “Wildcat” play is that the Defense shouldn’t really see the execution coming. Either you’re direct-snapping to the RB, allowing the possibility of a flee-flicker to the QB and a down-field play, or you line the QB out wide, with the possibility of him then either running a route or coming back for the end-around and down-field throw.

BTW...

This is why, when Miami runs this play, there is always motion prior to the snap. The way they play it is a sort of single-wing option, with the issue being which RB will get the ball and where/how will he cut vs. whether or not the QB will end-around to then throw a pass.

changes need....

to be made all over the place. its gonna be a tough tough game this week going up to toms place, regardless if hes struggling hes still tom brady, and nothing more than a tune up game with rookie corners trying to defend against him(wish that happened with KC and the colts D, that was wishful thinking) and its just going to make it harder on hope and griff having to make sure their corners are not getting done up. put in VY (no S*hit right) and let him audition for another team that will appreciate him, that wont use the BS that he quit on the team as their excuse (it was brought out that KC quit on his team too, forgot who brought it up please let yourself be known, but nobody remembers that when VY’s in the discussion) and then he can go to a team that i can be ok with beating the titans (just how it wasnt so painful when the ravens beat us b/c mcnair was over there). and everybody plz hold their “your not a fan b/c your rooting for a team to beat us” speech, blah blah blah. something needs to be done with the whole running game distribution, we need to go back to smash mouth running, and last time i checked that was LW’s nickname right??? b/c teams are catching dash, and theres no power there to get out of the tackle. we need more stunts on the d line, get the OL going somewhere’s else and have KVB come thru the inside. fish should have never gave the reigns completely to cecil, he should have been calling the plays from the get go with cec getting some calls here and there, all in all it should have been a “watch and learn process”. with all that being said, i will never stop rooting for this team, they have always possessed the heart and toughness under fish that really gets my attention. no matter how many losses we have i can always say that we played with heart, sometimes thats not enough (play calling, wrong personnel, etc), but im still optimistic that we return to our reg form in the near future.

and plz w/ all the rebuilding process bs, not many teams rebuild the season right after we won 13 games. (thanks to defense, NOT collins, get his ass on the bench so he can get ready for next year…were forced to find out.)
