Titans Still Winless After 31-9 Loss Against Colts

The Colts managed to limit the Titans offense to 12 first downs, 245 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 0 trips to the red zone. The key to the game was stopping Peyton Manning, and he threw for 309 yards and 3 touchdowns tonight.

This is a bad team, fellas. We are 1-8 in our last 9 games. Yeah, that's right. There wasn't anything to be proud of in this game. The Colts even handed us the ball off turnovers twice and they were only converted for 3 points each.

Vince Young entered with about 6 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, which got a standing ovation from myself and the few other fans that hadn't left LP Field yet.

Hurting an already thin secondary, CB Nick Harper exited the game in the third quarter with a broken forearm. TE Craig Stevens suffered a concussion on the opening kickoff and was taken to the hospital.

Next up is the Patriots. It's pretty much a guarantee that a  13-3 team last year will be 0-6 to start this season.

I just don't get it!!!

How do we go 13-3 and then turn into the Lions? When does the madness stop when I start looking forward to Crompton and the Vols more than I do the lowly Titans?

by 931Titans on Oct 12, 2009 1:28 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think...

Jeff Fisher doesn’t want VY. The owner wants VY to be teh future but Jeff is going to try and hold VY back as much as he can. I have to imagine Bud and Jeff are at odds right now with how they’re performing and letting VY ride the bench. Who knows if this is what is really goign on but if it is this whole team could be completely different top to bottom next year.

by ElectricScissors on Oct 12, 2009 2:03 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow.

This is getting brutal and the rest of this year will be tough. Fisher is probably right that next week is a bit soon for Vince, but you have to toss him to the wolves (Pats) next week. This team is flat-lining and it needs a shock to at least get a heartbeat again, I’m sure VY will be rusty and will struggle, but he needs the work next week to get him up to game speed with the first team again. Shake off the rust this week and then take the bye week to tweak the offense and get VInce some solid first team practice reps before demanding a quality game in week 8. Fisher is going to have to bite the bullet and make the switch even though VY will not solve all the problems with this team. The entire premise on which KC was re-signed to lead this team has spun off into the ditch. KC’s role was to “game-manage” a solid winning team through boring, but consistently adequate performances. Well, that’s just not going to get it done given the state of the team this year. Shake it up Mr. Fisher. Hello 2006. It’s deja vu all over again.

There are so many things to talk about after last nights game. The first one is the

penalties just before that half that GAVE the colts 30 yards in free field position that I felt was terribly unjustified. The Titans looked like they were playing with a purpose up to that point and after that the wheels fell off. It was an utter dismantling at the hands of Superman ( but he would never refer to himself as such)
Kerry Collins did not rise to the occasion when needed to. He needed to complete some big 2nd half passes, but they went sailing beyond or fell short of their mark. He is terrible when the chips are down. The defense looked actually decent in the first half and well, you know the rest of the story.
I don’t understand why Fisher would not put Young in after this, even though I feel the result will be just as bad if not worse than with KFC. I also don’t get why Ramsey was cut either. If management doesn’t beleive in Young, why not have a 3rd QB to go to? This season is a disaster from several perspectives. Hey, at least the special teams looked like they came to play against the Colts for the first time this year.

Injuries

Not sure any team is going to look good against the Cults without their Pro Bowl corner starting. Not that the secondary has been great this year anyway, but that just makes it worse. I’m on the fence for VY starting now. What little we saw looked like the same ol’ Vince. Throw to receivers feet, throw into receivers hands and a drop ball. At least he had a decent run and didn’t force a throw for an INT. If he can fix THAT part of his game, it’ll be a huge improvement.

by Evanbio on Oct 12, 2009 7:15 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Fisher

On a different note, if Fisher and Bud are at odds about VY, that could be really bad for the future. Bud is strong headed (as is Fish…). If Bud wants VY to play and Fish fights him, Jeff could be looking for a new job. Especially if the team struggles under KC. Maybe I’m being too pessimistic, and I certainly hope I am. At least we’ll get to play some NFC West teams soon, right?

by Evanbio on Oct 12, 2009 7:17 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Odd stat

They had twice as many first downs (4) from penalties as we had (2) from running the ball.

The Good News Is.....

We’ve got a core group of strong talent to re-build with.

1. CJ
2. Lendale
3. Griffin
4. Finnegan
5. Britt
6. Edison
7. Stewart
8. Roos
9. Bironas
10. various DT’s, haven’t decided yet which ones

I hate to be this way, but, in my opinion, we need to replace the following as part of the rebuilding process either for age or lack of production:

1. Kearse
2. KVB
3. Tulloch
4. Bulluck
5. Thornton
6, Harper
7. Washington
8. KC
9. Mawae

To me, the jury is still out on VY and Fisher. I’ll hold out until the end of the season on those two.

Bring Back Vince Young!

Um, dude

Stephen Tulloch is leading the team in tackles right now.

You couldn’t be more wrong about needing to replace that dude. He is good and will continue to be good.

Pretty sure the only bright part of our defense is the linebacking corps.

by TNTitans on Oct 12, 2009 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

In my opinion, Tulloch is average

In a 4-3 scheme, our Middle Linebacker should be the most dominate player. Just because he leads the team in tackles doesn’t mean his talent is above average.

We need our version of Ray Lewis not Tully Banta Cain

Bring Back Vince Young!

by pigskinpundits.com on Oct 12, 2009 8:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well then your opinion

is just wrong.

To give you an example, using the name that you invoked (for shame!), guess how many tackles Ray Lewis has this season?

DING DING DING. 45. Bulluck and Tulloch are top-10 in the NFL (yes you read that right) in tackles. Again, linebackers are not out problem, and Tully is and will be awesome for a long time.

Also, Lewis plays in a 3-4, and linebackers tend to get the glory coming out of that scheme much moreso than those in a 4-3.

Also, Tully has a fumble recovery and Bulluck has a pick, neither of which Ray Lewis has. Oh, and Tully ranks FIFTH IN THE NFL amongst players who actually play MLB, that list of course does not include Ray Lewis (god I’m getting tired of typing that awful name) because he is not a middle linebacker.

I could go on, if you’d like.

by TNTitans on Oct 12, 2009 8:47 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh and to add, in case it wasn't clear

Tully also has 45 tackles, same as Ray Lewis.

Even more odd, you didn't seem to care about any of the others I mentioned.

You bought the Tulloch jersey, didn’t you?

Bring Back Vince Young!

by pigskinpundits.com on Oct 12, 2009 9:05 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah, I don't have a Tulloch jersey

Your first two were KVB and Kearse. I agree 100%. Unfortunately, I think they’re both too old and done in the league. Kearse was an experiment that went very well last year and KVB was thought to be washed up when he exited Arizona and then came to Tennessee and DOMINATED.

Then you said Tulloch, Bulluck, and Thornton. I think maybe Thornton is showing some age, but to say that the other two aren’t playing their asses off on a defense that has really no other good things going for it- it’s almost like you’re not watching the games.

Harper I agree with 100%. He’s too old and can’t keep up with receivers anymore. When a guy, who’s job it is to DEFEND PASSES, has 2 passes defended and 38 tackles, the stats say the guy can’t keep up and has to tackle a receiver after he makes a catch. He’s done, and with the broken arm, he may just be done.

Nate Washington is another that I disagree with. The guy has been making plays and has 3 TD’s.

I also agree that KC is done, but I think that KC was done a LOOONG, LOOONG time ago. The guy isn’t a starting QB. When you compare him to an older QB like Kurt Warner it’s just laughable. But again, he was done as a starter well before this season.

As for the other side of the coin, haven’t really seen anything much out of Edison, but he’ll probably be serviceable. Good thing Bironas drained those FG’s last night, or he’d be on my shitlist.

I think that just about covers it from my end- you happy now? Did I cover everything that you said?

by TNTitans on Oct 12, 2009 9:17 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And add Gage to your got-to-get-rid-of list

I am sick of his worthless ass not showing up.

Does anyone realize that the Colts were playing without 3 of their 4 starting dbs? And our #1 receiver was invisible, our “big name” free agent continued dropping balls and running lazy routes, and our 1st round pick looked confused.

Maybe Superhorn is right and Graves needs to go.

Yup.

So much gets put on talent evaluation. And, it’s important. But, A BUNCH of it is coaching. We can’t develop any WR we draft, and the guys we pick up manage to get worse.

Meanwhile, a guy like Julian Edelman for the Pats, and Austin Collie/Pierre Garcon for the Colts can immediately step in and contribute.

Prior to 2007, Ray Sherman was the WR coach here. He went to Dallas in ’07. But, if you remember, he was good enough to coach up Drew Bennett and Bobby Wade, who both struggled to get on a roster this year. And, look at what Miles Austin did yesterday.

This is an issue. One that the executives need to address.

by SuperHorn on Oct 12, 2009 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really, Fisher?

LenDale rushes the ball 10 times for 51 yards. TEN TIMES?!

Again, I know we were behind for much of the game, but god dammit, we weren’t behind at the beginning of the game when LenDale was on the bench.

I love me some CJ, but LenDale is built to PUNISH an undersized, quick defense like the Colts. Let LenDale soften them up and have CJ deliver the killing blow at the end. Seems like that’s what we’ve done in the past, so what the hell is different now?

Is it just me, or does it look like Fisher has given up on The Thickness™, and, if so, does that mean he will be making another team very, VERY happy next season?

by SuperHorn on Oct 12, 2009 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let me add to this.

His history in the NFL:
2007-09: Wide Receivers, Tennessee Titans
2005: Wide Receivers, Detroit Lions
2004: Wide Receivers, Cleveland Browns
2001-03: Wide Receivers, Buffalo Bills

In those years of coaching, every year but two of them his teams have been in the bottom 1/3 of the NFL in Yards per reception. The other two, they haven’t been in the top 10.

I don’t get it. Besides an awesome mustache, there is no reason this man should have a job. Our receivers continue to be awful. Someone must be held accountable.

Snead is awful, I have seen him play and he wreaks.

Colt McCoy as painful as it is for me to say if very accurate. I think he might actually be an ok NFL quarterback, I just don’t know if he is durable enough. He does not have the body of an NFL QB. Other than that, he does throw well when pressured. I know most of his passes are short range, but his downfield throws usually are on target. Stepping up to the big leagues does present him with a whole lot more speed to adapt to, but he has been playing full time for 3 years now and that speaks volumes. I would still overall choose Bradford as the guy with the most upside come the draft.

Fisher and Collins

Honestly, Fisher appears to be “anchoring” to his decision of turning it over to KC and never looking back for 2009. Benching Kerry before his hand is forced now looks like an admission of guilt and culpability for a team that penalties and injuries be da*ned just wasn’t that good. The reality is, due to scheme, coaching, or talent the defense isn’t good, and an offensive unit that’s built to dovetail off of a dominant defense can be expected to fail if asked to do more. The record doesn’t lie, the Titans have been outscored by 55 points now and the teams they’ve lost to are a combined 10-9 outside of their matchups with us. Easy to second guess, but Fisher’s QB policy looks a lot more like stubbornness in sticking to a flawed blueprint than “loyalty to a guy that went 13-3”. Everyone seems to be updating their expectations of this team except for Fisher.

I vote we pick up

Jeff Garcia…sure I love Vince Young and yes the kid can make plays and yes I believe he deserves one more shot to prove he can do it. BUT, if he can’t, Kerry isn’t cutting it anymore. I think Garcia would be a cheap alternative in a season that has gone so wrong in so many ways just five games into it. While I’m completely disappointed in the seasons start, I’d just like to point out that Vince has led a team from 0-5 to 8-8 and missed the playoffs by one game. I assume this team is too decimated by injuries and old pull that off, but the optimist in me says hey it could happen.

This season is over. Why would we bring in another old guy in a throw away season? The only thing to do now is to run Vince out there and see what he can do.

season is over

like they said last nite we lost to all AFC teams colts will win our divison.. jets and texans are good enough to take our wildcard spot…..IF and im saying IF we were to run the table ( lmfao) .. really no point in trying to run the table with this team… pats couldnt do it 2 years ago.. what makes u think this banged up titan team will.. earth to titan fans season is over fuk jeff garica .. we gotta grab some 7eleven slurpee straws and suck it tha fuck up..let throw VY to the wolves see if we can get a stupid team to give us a draft pick for him any draft pick will help at the end of the season..and lets grab a qb.. a pocket passer this time please… colt or snead will have to do.. colt is a scrambler ..but he thinks throw 1st ..not run ! and lets get back on track here
