Ask Baltimore Beatdown: Questions for the Ravens Blogger

Hey Music City Miracle, it's Rexx, the blogger for the Baltimore Ravens over at www.BaltimoreBeatdown.com. Time for part two of this season, this time in your house. Even though you (and the refs) beat us in our crib earlier this season, we really bring it at your place. You might remember the Music City Miracle, but us Ravens fans remember slamming McNair to the turf and Ray grabbing the ball from Eddie George's arms and running for a TD in the 2001 playoff game!

Anyway, it's a different time and we are on the hunt to continue playing football for the next few weeks. This post is for the serious game related questions and the answers from a Ravens perspective. Keep the trash talking and smack for other posts, as we both know that's certainly coming down the pike throughout the rest of the week. Go visit, join and post your comments and opinions over at the Beatdown. You can be sure my guys will be here and love to throw it down. We are a small, but loyal and knowledgable group of fans that prefer quality over quantity. We prefer to keep the name calling and personal attacks out of it, though. We both know the Browns fans are the worst at that, as so many other team blog's fans have agreed. However, we were so surprised how rude and obnoxious the Dolphins fans were this past week. Perhaps it was because they wereso unfamiliar on how to act once your team is in the playoffs!

Anyway, I will be back the rest of the week to post my responses to your questions. While I can't wish you guys luck, let's hope for a great game that is decided on the field and not leave it to the refs to decide. Agreed? Now bring it!

"us Ravens fans remember slamming McNair to the turf and Ray grabbing the ball from Eddie George's arms..."

We also remember a gimpy Eddie running through Ray Ray like a paper doll on the way to a Wildcard win in 2003 ;-)

But seriously, have you guys been able to notice any common elements when Flacco struggles? He seem to be very hot and cold (5 games with 2 or more INTs, but 11 games where he didn’t throw a pick), and I was wondering what if anything you guys have noticed about those particular games and what defenses did to him or what the Ravens didn’t do to help him?

Also, do you guys feel the least bit guilty about La’Ron McLain stealing a Pro Bowl spot by being listed as a FB, despite being a RB since week 1?

Yeah, I sort of do remember that...

…but it’s like a bad accident, where you never remember the bad parts, huh?

Flacco struggles under big pressure, but that’s not a rookie thing, it happens to pretty much everybody. When he gets time, he is deadly, as he is tall enough to see over the defense and check his reads. The games where he threw the picks were mostly earlier in the season, but he’s been pretty accurate and consistent lately. The d-linemen do not cause the pass rush problems as much as the hybrid rush ends and blitzing LB’s.

McClain got the Pro Bowl nod because he also lines up as a FB and opens holes for Willis McGahee as well. The lack of guilt is probably due to our NT, Haloti Ngata being overlooked as well as our punter missing out, as both deserved to go.

agreed on Ngata

3-4 NTs are like o-linemen a lot of times: they take several years of being worthy to make it, but tend to stay in a while once they do.

He scored 10 touchdowns at the FB position

even though he lined up at RB, he is listed as a full back and played the position all of last year.

pro bowl voting doesn't consist of last year's positions and this year's achievements.

We understand why it happened, but it was still weak.

McClain got into the Pro Bowl because he was listed as a fullback and put up significant statistics.

I have a hard time arguing that he “should” have gone in this way, but the idea that the Ravens skidded the system to get an extra Pro Bowler is preposterous. McClain started at fullback all last year, he started at full back for the first 11 games of the season. The only reason he started getting the majority of carries at tailback is because Ray Rice got hurt and Willis McGahee was playing so badly that the Ravens started moving more and more to McClain. Before that he was mostly a short yardage and 4th quarter running back. Consider that the Pro Bowl ballot is written in week 8 and from week 6 to week 11 his number of carries were 2, 6, 7, 14, 5, 2, as Ray Rice and McGahee were getting the carries with McClain blocking for them. Then in week 12, with Ray Rice hurt and McGahee playing poorly, McClain got the carries.

Le’Ron McClain is what I would call an H-Back. He blocks, runs, and catches. Generally he does all of them pretty well but none of them superbly. However, I don’t think listing him as a fullback is all that unreasonable.

by math_geek on Jan 7, 2009 5:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Of I wasn't accusing the Ravens of gaming the system

sorry if it came off that way. I understand that it wasn’t the plat to have LeRon carry the load all year like he has, I was just pointing out that a guy made the Pro Bowl as a fullback because of work he did at another position. It’s almost like if Hester had made it to the Pro Bowl as a receiver last year for what he did in the return game.

That and I think Ahmard Hall was pretty deserving.

Where I was raised 2 + 2 = 3rd and 6.

More of an indictment on the Pro Bowl selection system.

Here's a deep one

We have an undrafted LB, Jameel McClain (no relation to Le’Ron) who comes in to rush the QB and always seems to be near the ball, getting a sack or causing a fumble.

We also have a couple of rookie safeties who make a huge impact on Special Teams and occasionally get in on defense. They are Tom Zbikowski (Notre Dame), who is an amateur boxing champ, returns kicks and hits real hard on ST. Also, Haruki Nakamura (Cincinnati) is a national judo champion and is a real hard tackler as well.

As far as a starter whom I’m not thrilled with? Geez, it can’t be defensive, unless CB Frank Walker gets a start due to injury and I can stand him, although everyone on the defense has played well the last month or so. Offensively, I guess the guy I’m truly disappointed in is TE Todd Heap. He’s been pretty invisible the majority of the season and never seems to get the type of YAC you’d expect from a TE.

Rexx

by Rexx on Jan 7, 2009 12:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

But Heap has been great at blocking this year.

Still a premier TE in this league and I would take him over more than half the TE in the league.

Dont forget to tell them Rexx that not only does Jameel McClain get in on pass rushes, but he has 2 blocked punts and has 2 safeties on the year, one of which came off of one of his block punts.

I’d have bet the farm on you guys wanting to get rid of McGahee. It’s my personal opinion that the best thing about the rematch is that McGahee is healthy, which means we’ll see less of McClain. I mean, thank GOD. McClain has had an awesome year. The less he’s on the field, the happier I’ll be.

What you don't understand

is that the Titans rotate defensive linemen in and out so much that it doesn’t really matter that they had the time off. If anything it means they will have fresh legs.

So do the Ravens

We have at least 2-3 other defensive linemen who have made plays for us all season, including rush ends and LB’s galore. (Did I just say “galore!?”)

Perhaps. But that fact has nothing to do with your rushing attack.

And it’s irrelevant to the reality that a smarter head coach would feed his best back more carries.

how is d-mase's shoulder doing?

obviously he has been playing, but i never really heard what the deal was other than it was popping out on him.

second question: if he is ok, can we have him back? lorenzo neal as well. samari might even still be able to play nickel for us…

speaking of lorenzo, how bad should mcgahee feel for stealing mclain’s carries and ruining lorenzo’s streak of blocking for 1000 yard rushers every season? i have always thought zo was one of the most underrated and overlooked nfl players in history.

also, looking over stats, i discovered that blatimore’s pass protection has been a bit weak this year, 34 sacks or 7% of drop backs. it’s not pittsburgh level bad, but it’s not good either, and it is something that, as a titans fan, i am glad to see. can you comment on this? has it been more of a blitzing weakness or what?

D. Mason is a friggin' WARRIOR!!!

The way he hung in there in the Cowboys game got him tons of respect, even though he’s earned it throughout his career with you and now here in Baltimore. He is pretty well known throughout the league, but I say he’s perhaps the best possession receiver in the league. He is not too fast, but runs great routes, sells the fake and has hands of glue, always knowing when to drag his toes. That throw (from Flacco) and Mason’s sideline catch at the end of the firs half in Miami this past Sunday was a thing of beauty and what Mason’s been doing all season. His shoulder was sore, but is getting better and will not be a factor unless of course, you hit him real hard on it (please be nice). Uhh…those three guys are pretty integral, and so was McNair for 2006 at least. Thanks again for all of them. Zo is a beast and I love those high shoulder pads he wears! McGahee is starting to mouth off and may earn himself a trade or release, but still makes the big gain as he did at the end of both the Cowboys and Dolphins game to seal them away.

As far as the pass protection, those stats are misleading old news. Flacco has not be sacked or hit hard that much at all for the last 4-6 games at least. Our o-line has been excellent when they are healthy, which they are now at full strength. Blitzing is your best shot as unless I’m wrong, you didn’t get any sacks in the first game, did you? Good questions, thanks.

"Blitzing is your best shot as unless I’m wrong, you didn’t get any sacks in the first game, did you?"

Just to clarify: our D pretty much never blitzes, because they don’t need to. They’ve probably blitzed once or twice in most game (and none in several of them). Those are usually CB and safety blitzes.

Our 4 man rush lead to plenty of pressure and 2 INTs last time, and we’ll take that again if it’s all we get on Saturday.

at least not without 2 more really good years. If he can pull that off then he’ll be top 10 in all-time receptions and closer in yardage. As it is he’s behind Keenan McCardell and Muhsin Muhammad, both of whom are not HOFers, IMO.

Hey Guys

Mr MaLoR here from the Baltimore Beatdown. I am really excited for this game as I think both our teams play very similar style football. I respect the Titans very much for what they have been able to do this year without the biggest amount of talent.

You guys were undefeated and still were not the most talked about team in the NFL. Before you all lost your first game, with the exact record the season before, all you heard about was Tom Brady and the Pats. It is because the NFL and the experts and media who cover this sport, do not appreciate a grind out game where you hit each other in the mouth. I have always said that I would see the Ravens win a game 13-10 rather than 35-32 because even though we would put up 35 points, the heartbreak of seeing an offense score 32 on us would be terrible.

Anyway, I cannot really wish you guys good luck this Saturday because I am rooting for you to lose of course. But hope you give us a good challenge and we are very anxious to get some sweet revenge from week 4.

Do you guys remember Suggs getting a roughing the passer call because his hand hit Kerry Collins shoulder pad, while Suggs was being blocked, trying to swat the ball and make the sack? Damn he sure roughed up Kerry with that vicious shoulder slap.

and it was a false start penalty anyway!

Amazing that all 22 players on the field never heard the whistle, eh? That’s why I think the refs have been horrible overall this season, with more critical poor calls than ever before. I think the game has changed too much but the refs haven’t. sonething more high tech needs to be done with the whistles, penalty flags and replays. I’d like to see less refs on the field and more up in a box repviewing any close play and then calling down to the head ref who wears a headset. Perhaps a “chip” in the ball would take care of the “breaking the plane” problems as well.

I disagree. Suggs contacted Collins' helmet with his arm. You don't get credit for just "brushing" it.

You can’t tell me that you watch that in live fast motion and you don’t think Suggs touched his helmet. And that is all the referee has—live motion. We can watch it and slow it down frame by frame but he does not have that option.

I just watched the replay. Even if he didn’t, we deserved it for the two BS personal fouls against Finnegan. The first one should have been offsetting at worst since douchebag Mason decided to rip his helmet off, and the second was just ticky-tack. And those both moved the Ravens 30 yards down the field.

I would have to agree

that it is strange that the false start was wiped off. But he said “by rule” so that must be a specific NFL ruling.

In high school, you would enforce the false start, and then enforce the personal foul and measure to see if it was a first down.

In NCAA, you would enforce the false start, then the personal foul and have an automatic first down for the personal foul.

Must be a special NFL thing.

i remember the Titans had a boat load of dumb penalties on our first drive. that helped big time. i think Flacco’s growth will be the biggest factor in this game. he’s a different qb now. he may have only made 9 completions sunday against the Phins but he also threw it away or over-threw to be safe. he was in full student mode against you the first time and was working 1/3 of the field for the most part (big reason for the constant roll out right/ints). He was being brought along very slowly to Cam’s credit. Pretty amazing progress considering Billick spent 5 years with Boller and Boller can’t carry Joe’s jock (or fit it).

the wrinkle for the titans saturday will be more balls to Lendel. i think he got 3 last meeting. our D is the same plus healthier and our O is about 40% better with Flacco and Heap now clicking. clayton is now a true deep threat. neal and the rb’s are now on the same page most of the time and neal is catching balls (look for that sat.) ray rice is back sat. too!!! that will give us a heck of a boost-especially in the screen pass.

Who/what has improved measurably for the Titans since our first meeting?

ravens can talk about how “unflappable” and whatever he is, but that was a shoddy qb i watched play against miami. inaccurate all day. and lets not confuse miami for a playoff team….they were schedule frauds from day one. 8 games against the 2 worst divisions in football, plus two against the bills… no wonder they won 11 games, they had 10 cupcakes on the schedule. consecutive 2 point wins over the raiders and seahawks…. they were never a very good team.

if i could take as a given that we would see flacco perform roughly the same on saturday as he did in the wild card round, i would bet the farm on the titans. he hit some open receivers and overthrew plenty as well.

alright, i’ll stay…..flaco did what he had to do and he escaped with a poor % game but he was over-avoiding mistakes. playing it real safe because he could. i don’t think he’ll have 2 poor % games like that back to back. i’ll take a similar game from him IF he doesn’t turn it over. 15-30 with 0 ints would almost be acceptable.

Flacco looked pretty damn good when he needed to in Miami

The rocket he threw to Mason on the sideline at the end of the first half was a thing of beauty, something like that KC can only now dream about. He overthrew Mark Clayton twice on the same drive with a defensive player in his face both times. However, he was money on third downs, which is the best status of his effectiveness. I’ll take that stat number from him if we win any day.

hmmm you clearly didn't see KC against pittsburgh

dude was making every ridiculous throw imaginable. he may be old, but he still has the gun

rexx was using that as an example of his get it done on 3rd/important downs. he plays safe because of the D but when they need him he lights it up. he’s come back on a number of teams this year when the D faultered.

Flacco vs Collins

I’m sorry, but I have been checking out Flacco’s game by game here:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/8795/game_log.html

And he just does not strike fear into my heart. Much less convince me that he can win this game.

Collins has been sacked 8 times in the season, compared to Flacco’s 32. Thirty Freakin’ 2. And the Ravens OLine is better?

I don’t see it. If Collins keeps the ball out of Ed Reed’s hands, Titans win.

Hmmm....sounds familiar...

….oh yeah, the Dolphins, their fans and their media said the exact same thing before the game.

And what happened?

The quarterback threw 4 interceptions. 2 to Ed Reed. Joe Flacco did not win that game for the Ravens, Ed Reed did.

EXTREMELY different teams

But the talk has been the same, you know, “….stop the run, force Flacco to get flustered…” blah, blah, blah. Just like every team has said all season but has rarely happened, especially in key games lately. Say what you want about your first win over us, but you can’t put that on Flacco. Our defense let you go all the way down the field for the winning TD, and that was when it was not doing anywhere as good as it is now.

You see, the game still has to be played to show who’s right here. But to me, as you will read in tomorrow’s post on the Beatdown, it comes down to who is playing better NOW. And for that, despite how well you looked against the Steelers, the Ravens have looked better over the past six games, much less the past one or two. There is no excuse for the egg you laid in Indy, regardless of the nothing to gain mentality and injuries. Some people may pick the Titans, but most agree that the Ravens are playing better on both sides of the ball right now. However, that’s why they play the games, as both teams can win here, as opposed to last week, when there was no way the Dolphins were going to win that game, despite what the delusional Dolphins fans thought.

Good luck (I mean as far as trying and staying healthy, but certainly not for winning!).

Much like in 2000: whomever wins this game is in the Super Bowl, IMO.

so good luck in the health department, and a hex on your capacity to win!

Where I was raised 2 + 2 = 3rd and 6.

No one is picking the Titans.

Everyone in America outside of Nashville agrees with you.

Given history, I think most Titans fans prefer it that way.

I'm trying to be optimistic.

The disinterested Giants fans in my office all seem to think that the Titans are going to win. I’m trying to take heart where I can.

Yeah, Ravens fans loved that in the past

and prefer to keep it that way. That’s why we love the fact that Flacco rec’d ZERO votes for Rookie of the Year, Harbaugh rec’d ZERO votes for Coach of the Year and Ed Reed came in THIRD as Defensive Player of the Year. No respect gets us going.

The excuse for Indy is there were no

starters on the field in the second quarter. You can use that to make yourself feel better if you want

yeah

there is no excuse for the titans to be so unprofessional, imo, but it’s not like that game has anything at all to do with this one. the only thing that resembled the titans on the field against indy were the uniforms.

It certainly didn't hurt the Giants

last year to play hard in the final game with nothing on the line. Hopefully, from a Ravens point of view, the almost month long layoff has you guys out of whack, and KC throws a bunch of completions, let’s say to keep the streak alive, two,..to Ed Reed?

Rexx

i totally agree

i was quite pissed with the no-show at indy, and i said so. pretty much indefensible in my book.

rust will have zero effect on the defense, as they are a constant. but the lay off could very well cost us on the offensive side of the ball. collins has played gawd awful in first quarters all season long (i think 6 of his 7 picks) even without a 3 week layoff. if it took them til the last 10 minutes of our first meeting to wake up and move the ball, i’m a bit worried as to how quickly they will be able to get off the ground this time around.
thats why im calling for a lot more lendale early in the game, even if it isn’t too successful. this is the ravens 17th consecutive game week and 7th road game in 11 weeks, and our guys couldn’t be more fresh. there is no way in hell (at least this is what i am banking on anyway) that the ravens can match energy levels for 60 minutes if our guys approach it right.

Not true

At 33, Ray Lewis may be the best conditioned athlete i the NFL. HYis conditioning program is legendary. Many of the Ravens players as well as a bunch from the “U” work out with him. Comditioning is not an issue with the Ravens and they are game ready and fresh, while the Titans time off can easily work against them, as history has proved.

ray lewis may be a freak

but has any nfl team ever played 17 consecutive game weeks before? you really want to claim that a team on a short week between 2 road games, and on such a ridiculous run of game weeks, and so much traveling over the last 3 months will be as equally rested or “fresh” as a team that has been essentially chilling out for the last 3 weeks?

what a story that would be- 20 straight weeks of games to the SB.
I can see the books already- The Rookie and Ray, Mason The Machine, Ngata Everything, The Best Reed, Meet the Harbuaghs…

These guys are finely tuned pros

or at least most of them are. And the fat linemen have a bunch of fat to burn to keep them fresh! Besides, at this point of the season, everyone is hurting and tired, regardless of schedule. You’ll never see or even hear anyone other than those media types trying to come up with an angle to get themselves more press. Tired? Ha!
