Passing on talent

So... I'm a pretty hardcore Titans fan and, believe it or not, was high on CJ out of college because I saw him play Southern Miss. . . He was unreal-good and his speed was undeniable - but it was the way he ran like a running back that was amazing. He plays the position really well...

It got me wondering about our shining-star moment in the '05 draft. I'm watching the NFL replay of Arizona and Carolina. Antrel Rolle, who was picked two picks after we chose Pacman. This guy is really coming into his own -  Not to mention, what in the world is Arizona doing beating Carolina like that?!

Rolle_and_wilson_medium

Having Antrel and Cortland, with Harper interchangeable. . . Grif, Hope. . .that would be a wicked secondary . . .

As for this years draft...

I am pretty cool with drafting one of the many talented WR's in this draft, but how smart was it to not pick WR's out of last year's draft class?! I love the fact that Fisher and crew didn't rush to grab Limas Sweed or any of the guys that went to Washington. (Two guys, DeSean Jackson and Ed Royal in Denver were WR's worth taking in last years draft.)    Seems most everyone in the organization was aware of the talent coming this year. I imagine either a WR or a play making Tight End, or even a Corner could be the pick here. We suffered due to a lack of healthy depth in our roster - that will be addressed earlier, rather than later this year.

Those are all pretty decent picks, but I think Aaron Rodgers and...

…Ronnie Brown both have at least as much to offer as does Antrel Rolle. Plus, didn’t they move Rolle to Safety? I mean, that’s fine if that’s where he should play, but I’m not so sure that Safety is a need position for the Titans. In fact, while I think CB might be a need in future years, I think that in general, Nick Harper’s play this year was basically very good.

And hey, we could have used DeSean Jackson. Maybe not as much as we used CJ, but this team with a deep threat would be a MUCH, MUCH more potent team.

Was wondering that, too.

Smell like cabbage.

If I hit a hole-in-one on this grand slam the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

Dont know how closely you were watching that game...

but I’m pretty sure Antrel Rolle plays safety. He couldn’t cut it at corner so they moved him. Now i would never say drafting Adam Jones was a good move, but I would rather have Ronnie Brown or any of the others mentioned above than Rolle. Adam produced in the two years we had him while Rolle only played 5 games as a rookie. Plus i would much rather have Griff who is younger and more talented IMHO. We probably wouldnt have drafted Griff if Rolle was at safety for us. Based purely on talent and nothing else, Pacman was the right choice. I dont feel Rolle should have been drafted that high.

The reason Floyd Reese said he passed on Rolle

was because he thought he would be a safety at the next level. Looks like he was right.

pacman was a better pick

except for that whole strip club fetish. but seriously, before he let his stupidity ruin his football career, he was the best young corner in the league and a pretty dangerous punt returner to boot. they totally failed to evaluate the fact that he was half braindead, but he was a great pick from a talent/strictly on field perspective.

how they missed the fact that he was an ignorant thug with a violent streak, we may never know.

but he was a hell of a football player while it lasted

I remember there being questions about his attitude.

And I remember most experts thinking we’d go for Rolle, because he was the better pure defender. What it came down to was Pacman’s ability to return punts. And it worked, too. We went from being 30th in the league in return average in ‘04 to being 5th in ’05. Fisher is a coach that loves him some special teams, and so that’s the way it went.

He was wearing a tshirt with a picture of himself on it.

I didn’t have ANY questions about his attitude!

i was big on carlos rogers

but then again i’m biased towards sec defensive players.
out of all the other first round picks, i think demarcus ware, shawne merriman (minus the roids), and aaron rodgers are the only ones i wish we didn’t pass on.

Demarcus Ware is a stud

But likely wouldn’t fit into our defense unless we moved him to DE.
