Jay Glazer Reporting Tony Dungy to Retire

Jay Glazer is reporting that Tony Dungy is going to announce his retirement from the Indianapolis Colts this afternoon at a press conference.

As much as I hate the Colts I have always liked Dungy.  He is a class act and it will be sad to see the NFL lose him.

It'll be interesting to see over the next few years

How much of this success was Dungy and how much was Manning/Polian.

Why can’t you just look at it as a Dungy/Manning/Polian contribution instead of singling one person out?

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft a stud running back in 2009 so I can tell you I told you so.

you always look for something to fight about

by DonFrancisco on Jan 12, 2009 12:50 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Relax.

I’m not taking shots at Dungy.

by SuperHorn on Jan 12, 2009 1:09 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think you were replying to King Richard and not me, but just to be clear…I was addressing King Richard and not Superhorn. Superhorn only likes to “fight” about VY.

by DonFrancisco on Jan 12, 2009 1:28 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It was to King Richard

And I prefer to use the word “defend”, not “fight” when discussing VY.

by SuperHorn on Jan 12, 2009 2:47 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Speaking of fighting...

…what are the odds of VY getting into mixed martial arts? No that’s something I would pay to see. VY vs. Pacman Jones. Then, the winnder of that fight could take on the winner of Alge Crumpler vs. David Givens for the title of

GREATEST DISAPPOINTMENT IN FRANCHISE HISTORY!!!

I figure it’d do a cool mil in PPV buys.

His fumble ruined the best season in franchise history.

Even with all the other mistakes, if you take that one away and add 3 points in its place, it’s a totally different game.

A Great Run for a Great Coach

As much as I dis-like the Colts, I always remember that Dungy is there to back them up. I like what the Colts have done the past 4-5 years in the NFL. This team still has what it takes to be great, even without Dungy. I can’t really hate on Peyton because he’s a Tennessee boy, but his stature remains to be seen with a new coach and possibly a new direction. I wish Tony the best with whatever he wants to do post-coaching. He is still the only African-American coach with a Superbowl win. That alone says alot. Ravens are going down in the AFC championship game.

Dungy was/is a great coach.

And a complete class act. I don’t like the Colts but I am very happy Dungy got his ring. Plus I think its really cool he walked away because he realizes there are bigger things in this world than football. Very cool.

Likely Hall of Famer

He did it without smoke and mirrors and secret practice videos of the opposing teams. I won’t miss having to compete against him though….unless he gets hired by the Jags in 2010. Slap me for thinking about that please.

Seems to be a good man, well liked

and definitely one of the best coaches of out era… All-Time may be a stretch, but he was an innovator and has sustained regular season success like few have ever seen.

Do you think Dungy is a Hall of Famer?

I’m curious what Titans fans think. also, thanks for the nice words everyone.

no doubt

There aren’t many coached in the hall right now, but I’d expect to see those numbers increase in the next decade or so, and Tony will be among those.

Hall of Famer for sure

He’s coaching credentials speak for themselves. I know it’s cliche, but he’s a better person than he is as a coach. I’m going to miss him.

He should be

I will be mad if he doesn’t get in.

by theologic on Jan 12, 2009 6:12 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i don't know if he will be or not...

He is a great coach and a better man. I think he had a great coaching career…but I’m not sure only one ring (and only the one super bowl appearance) will get him in. If he doesn’t get in, he certainly deserves to be in the role model Hall of Fame.

No question.

Football lost

a great coach and a great person today… I don’t know if there is a coach in football that is more respected by his players and peers as Dungy, and deservedly so. While I dislike the Colts do to their being a division rival. I respect and like this man a lot… Regardless of your religion, beliefs, or team you root for you will not find another with more faith and values than him in the NFL.

Just curious, has anyone read his book? Very good book, if you get a chance check it out.

From a Colts fan,

thanks for the props towards Coach Dungy. Here’s to hoping that Coach Caldwell can keep the Tenn/Indy rivalry going strong. See you next season.

1st CLASS

Character above all else will always be our legacy. Dungy was a true man of character. The NFL loses a great man.

gotta keep on keepin on

It's brutal

but we knew it was coming. As Dungy always said: “Next man up!”

by burc on Jan 13, 2009 10:27 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cautiously Optimistic

From Polian this morning, the defensive scheme is going to stay in tact, and not many changes are needed on offense (other than those that were going to be addressed with or without Dungy).

Caldwell has been in Indy for 8 years, and is said to have the same demeanor as Dungy. As long as #18 is under center, I think we’ll be ok. I also think Dungy will be utilized as an unofficial “consultant” in the future, so he isn’t going to be completely removed from the game.
