AFC Playoff Perspective
This post is my first fan post is maybe a little long and too ambitious for newbie but I hope you will with me.
I have been reading alot of blogs and "expert" articles and fans posts with everyone giving their opinion of who is going to dominate in the playoffs and why. Of course alot of the resons are things like "momentum," "peaking at the right time," "big game experience," or even simply that "they" are a better team because "they have the hardest schedule in the last 25 years" so no one else can compare.
Well I thought to myself that there really must be some way to judge how a team might do in the playoffs that is a little more tangible, because I don't know about you, but I really don't know how to measure "momentum" or "peaking" and don't have a crystal ball to see how another team might have fared against "the hardest schedule in the last 25 years."
So I asked myself, Self, in order to guage how a team might perform against the teams that are in the playoffs this year, how about we just look at their performance against (wait for it.................) teams that are in the playoffs this year.
Here it goes.
TITANS: Our Boys have played 5 games against 4 teams that are playoff teams this year. Baltimore, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Minnesota. They won 4 of those games including 3 against 3 different AFC playoff teams. The sole loss came to Indianapolis in week 17 in a game that was played by backups, never the less it was a loss and gave the boys a .800 winning percentage against playoff teams.
COLTS: They played 6 games against 5 playoff teams. Minnesota, Baltimore, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, San Diego. They won 5 of those games with their only loss coming to Tennessee in an emotional and important game on Monday night. Really don't think they should get credit for the week 17 win, but just so no one claims foul, I will leave it in. That gives them a winning percentage of .833 against playoff teams.
PITTSBURGH: They played 7 games against 6 playoff teams. Yes this means they had a very hard schedule and if they want people to think of them as an elite team then they should win a good percentage of the harder games yes? Well they played Baltimore, Indianapolis, Tennessee, Philly, New York and San Diego. They were 3-4 in those games. Two of those wins were against division rivals Baltimore and the other one was against San Diego (we will see if that was a quality win in a moment.) That left them with a winning percentage of .429 in games against playoff teams.
BALTIMORE: They also played 7 games against 6 playoff teams. New York, Philly, Miami, Tennessee, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. They went 2-5 in those games with their wins coming against Philly and Miami. They finish with a .286 winning percentage against playoff teams
MIAMI: They played only three games against playoff teams. All were in the first half of the season. They played Arizona, San Diego, and Baltimore. The only game they won of those three was against San Diego (again is this a quality win?) That left them with a winning percentage of .333
SAN DIEGO: They played 5 playoff teams and lost all 5 and thus had a .000 winning percentage against palyoff teams. The teams were Carolina, Miami, Pitssburgh, Indianapolis and Atlanta.
So basically we see that the only playoff teams that have beatenTennessee and Indy are..........................Tennessee and Indy (although a contentiously conceded fact on our side because of the week 17 circumstances.) Pitt only beat Balitmore and SD (who didn't beat any playoff team.) Baltimore could only manage to beat one AFC Playoff team in Miami whose only win came against SD (who again beat nobody from the playoffs)
I don't know what anyone else out there thinks of these stats, but to me they paint a much clearer picture about who should be worried about who in the playoffs. My way of thinking says that Indy and Baltimore win in wildcard weekend setting up an Indy @ Pitt and Baltimore @ Tennessee line up for Divisional weekend which I think will lead to an Indy @ Tennessee AFC Championship game. That is the matchup that scares me a little bit, but that is the one I see happening. I think in the end our Titans win that game and make the trip to Tampa.
I will continue to sit back and listen to other fans try to justify their bravado with things like winning streaks, or hard schedules, or momentum or whatever they want. I feel pretty safe in my analysis relying on facts and stats. I guess we will see very soon how it works out
What do you all think?

Great post

smart post
really puts things in perspective. reiterates what i’ve been saying for a long time now – the afc south is by far the toughest division in football, especially with houston on the rise. to go 13 -3 coming from that division is a major accomplishment.

great post
the steelers and ravens having losing records kind of surprised me. the chargers part did not.
also, just for fun i looked into the records of a few other teams:
the pats were 2-4 against playoff teams
the cowboys went 2-6
eagles went 4-3
i empathize with pats fans for them being left out with a 11-5 record, but i don’t buy that they were one of the best teams in the nfl with a 2-4 record (like some of my pats friends have been saying).
also, the cowboys and eagles records were interesting to me because i think it shows that the eagles are for real (and rightfully in the playoffs) and the cowboys were pretenders.

i'm pretty high on the Eagles
i see them going deep in the playoffs but not winning the nfc championship.
they have a dangerous offense and decent defense.

Agreed
but there’s just something not right with that team mentally: they seemingly can’t go 2 weeks in a row without getting off their gameplan and beating themselves.

I think it would be worth considering
A purely seeded playoff team selection – top 6 from AFC and top 6 from NFC make it regardless of division. No more 8-8 teams making it while an 11-5 sits home.
I don’t think they’ll ever do it (tradition), but arguably it would make for better and more watched playoff games.
And good post – looking at record against other playoff teams makes sense.
by numbertenox on Jan 2, 2009 2:07 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
thats it
i also think they should do away with the first round bye and have 8 teams making it to the playoffs. it would mean more meaningful games at the end of the season. and having a first round bye doesn’t seem to necessarily give and advantage (at least as muchas it should…)

come play-off time! You could build a case for anything you wanted using numbers and records. All teams step it up in the play-offs and it’s anyones game to be honest! It comes down to who wants the game more. If I were you, I wouldn’t be scared of Indy to soon. I would first and foremost be scared of Baltimore, assuming they beat Miami!!! I agree with you to a point.........
Any team can win on any given Sunday and teams that are “supposed” to win can find a way to lose. Wether it is by just not “showing up” that day or having injury problems or whatever. That point was driven home last year when the Giants won the Super Bowl. By all accounts the Pats should have blown them out and maybe the Pats win 9 if that game is played 10 times, but on THAT day the Giants were better and had things go their way.
The point of my post was to just show Statistically what SHOULD happen based on a sustained body of experience over 17 weeks. Sustained performance does not happen by accident and your reply actually helps make my point. If I was a fan of a team that had only lost 4 games this season and 3 of those games were against 3 of the 4 teams that also had at least 12 wins during the season and didn’t play the 4th, I would look for something intangible like “who wants it more” to bolster my confidence too. I would be worried about being able to beat everybody EXCEPT ANY of the teams that were at the top of the Leauge record wise during the season. I would feel better if I had won at least one of those games if I was in that situation. But hey, thats just me.

"But hey, that's just me"
Well that definitely isn’t me. After demolishing the Titans 34-7 to open the season, the 2005 Steelers finished at 11-5. Losses included Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Yet Pittsburgh claimed on-the-road playoff victories over both of these foes as they went on to win the Super Bowl. It’s a one game season every week from here on out. Look for teams with experience at performing under pressure – Peyton and the Colts would definitely be one. Eli and the Giants would be another. I haven’t checked but I doubt the Titans are in the top three Vegas favorites to take home the trophy.
If you want to see an interesting sidelight to the recent amateurish towel incident in Nashville, google up some of the Terrible Towel articles and you’ll find what served as momentum for the Steelers improbable playoff victory over Cincinnati that year; it was one of the Bengal receivers messing with “the towel” after the regular season Cincinnati victory. Go ahead – check it out. :)
Win or lose, let’s hope the Titans will behave a bit more maturely for the remainder of the season. We Tennessee residents certainly don’t need to provide any more ammunition to support the term “Rednecks from Tennessee”.

I have checked
and the Titans are the Vegas favorites to go to the SuperBowl out of the AFC. I guess if experience playing under pressure three years ago and a terrible towel incident for motivation is what qualifies a team to win the SuperBowl then the Vegas Odds makers certainly have it wrong. God forbid they should look at a teams performance this year to come up with there odds. What were they thinking?

wow your heads are so big after winning one meaningless game. That game was almost as purposeless as the last game of the season for us. We had our bye locked up and put it on cruise control. say what you want but the facts are that both of us were guranteed a bye week and a home game. If that game is played earlier in the season then its bigger but that late in the season? Nah if you are smart you aren’t going to go all out in a meaningless game that late in the season.

Talkin' bad in Music City
Folks,
You can say what you want but regardless of who wins the AFC and/or The Super Bowl this year, the Titans are still a young franchise looking to make it’s mark on football history. To the contrary, the “Top NFL teams” described in the below link have established their extended excellence over at least a ten year period. In the case of the Steelers and the Packers, the excellence (and at times dominance) goes back much further. Anyone who’s that unaware of NFL history might want to Google things like “Steel Curtain” or “Vince Lombardi”. If you’re up for an enjoyable road trip I strongly suggest the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. I’m sure it might come as a surprise to some of you but you’ll see quite a bit more Cowboy, Packer, Giant, Steeler, or (Baltmore) Colt stuff than Titan memorabilia. I don’t know if you’ve ever been there but the Steelers even have a place in the Smithsonian Institute’s collection. Since many of you out there are probably Tennessee residents and UT fans let me ask you this:
Could you ever in your wildest imagination picture Peyton Manning stomping a Terrible Towel if/when the Colts beat the Steelers in a playoff game?
Of course not, because though he did play (and play very well) for the Volunteers he’s clearly not a classless redneck from Tennessee. If you guys really want to see the Titans establish the tradition and respect belonging to the Packers, Steelers, Giants, etc you might want to listen to some of Jeff Foxworthy’s monologues and encourage your players to raise the bar on their behavior above that level. Also note the below comment about the Vegas bettors liking the Steelers. Wonder why?
Have a good new year and don’t get too torqued up about this stuff or you’ll find yourself playing right into Foxworthy’s image. :)
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas sports books favor the New York Giants over the 11 other teams in the NFL playoffs to win the Super Bowl, giving 2-to-1 odds on the NFC’s No. 1 seed to repeat as champions. The Tennessee Titans are the favorite among AFC teams to win a title at 4-1, closely followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers at 9-2.
“Baltimore and Indianapolis can get there almost as easy as Tennessee,” Seba said. “They have to do it on the road, but as we saw last year with the Giants, it can be done.”
Jay Kornegay, executive director of the race and sports book at the Las Vegas Hilton, said there is essentially no difference between the Titans and Steelers, though the Hilton has the Titans slightly behind the Steelers because of Pittsburgh’s popularity among bettors.
“The way we see it, it’s a crap shoot,” he said. “It’s going to make for an interesting playoff. I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see either of the one or two seeds from both conferences in the Super Bowl.”

Just as
you couldn’t imagine Peyton stomping on a Terrible Towel, could you really imagine Kerry Collins stomping?
Also, for the top teams over the last 10 years, after this season, the Titans would be in the top four teams with a .600 winning percentage.
You can look at it either way.

Yes the article says that Pittsburgh follows closely BEHIND Tennessee at 9-2 odds but............
Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. You stated that you doubted the Titans were in the top three favored and the facts are that they are in the top two favored in vegas odds, hence you were wrong.
No, you are right, I couldn’t picture Peyton stomping on a dishrag the same way that I couldn’t picture him getting arrested for punching his girlfriend or blowing .169 after getting pulled over for a DUI like your LB Harrison or beloved Mascot Steely McBride. I guess if a Titan player stomping on the dishrag makes us all classless rednecks from Tennessee then Harrison and Steely makes Steeler fans spouse abusing alcoholics. Ridiculous to paint everyone with one brush isn’t it? I guess for Steeler fans it is all right to punch your girl and endanger the public by driving drunk, just as long as you don’t “disrespect” someones football team? Oh well, I guess if labeling Titans fans as classless Rednecks helps Steeler Fans feel better about themselves, we are glad to oblige them and I volunteer to stomp on a few more towels if it will help. I am all about helping someones self esteem.
I agree with you that the Steelers have a long and storied existence and have done some really great things over the years, but the discussion is about THIS year and who has the best chance of making it through the playoffs with their CURRENT team, and I am pretty sure that Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris aren’t going to help you much on the field THIS year. The attitude that Steeler Fans show is one of entitlement. We should just roll over and call you the greatest team THIS year becasue you were a great team in the past. If you want to be called the best team this year then PROVE it. The whole point of the original post was to show who has done that so far THIS year.

Speaking of this year ............
NFL 2008 Strength Of Schedule
Team——————-Winning Percentage————Opp. Total Wins———Opp. Total Losses
Steelers—————————.598———————————————153———————————-103
Colts———————————.594———————————————152———————————-104
Jaguars—————————.559———————————————143———————————-113
Vikings—————————-.551———————————————141———————————-115
Ravens—————————.551———————————————141———————————-115
Titans——————————.551———————————————141———————————-115
I told you that I hadn’t checked the odds. I was surprised and I do stand corrected but I’m honestly not sure that very slight statistical difference makes much of a difference, especially when the Vegas Hilton’s comment about “bettors tending to like the Steelers” is factored in. It’s a given that the Titans won the 1st head-to-head against the Steelers but remember those 2005 Steeler road playoff games against the Colts and towel stomping Bengals. If I were a betting man I’d bet a few dollars that either the Steelers, Colts, or Ravens will send your guys home for the winter.
I see the hit Big Ben took last Sunday against Cleveland as being much more savage and uncalled for than the Palmer-broken-leg incident, but I don’t believe you’ll hear the Steeler coaches, players, or fans whining about how their chances are ruined.
If you want to talk about off-field (or was that on-field?) incidents we could certainly mention Mr. Haynesworth’s version of the Tennessee Stomp.
We’ll see what happens from here on out. But I’ll bet Fisher has already talked to his good ole’ boys about pulling towels out from their belt before they’ve even gotten the ball into the end zone for a score. That might not be exactly classless redneck but it doesn’t show a brain surgeon level of intelligence either. It looked like yet another example of undisciplined, amateurish behavior to me.
Have a good day watching football and be comfortable in the fact that one day the Titans may even be found worthy of the respect the Steelers, Giants, Colts, Patriots, Packers organizations enjoy. :)

this is getting a little repetitive
so the Steelers won a couple of road games in the playoffs in 2005. GRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEAAAAAAT. then why didn’t they call on that experience and let it work for them in the last two year? Now all of a sudden it is going to become relevant again after a two year dormant spell? AGAIN the 2005 season and how they won road playoff games has nothing to do with THIS YEAR. If it did, then by the logic you use the Steelers should have been the Super Bowl champions to two subsequent years, but they aren’t because they are a different team playing other different teams. That is the whole point of playing each and every season. Your win loss percentage table says nothing except the Steelers didn’t play Detroit. The fact remains that they lost to everyone they played that had a record of 12-4 or better at the end of the season and the Titans won. I imagine that is part of their strategy though. Lure everyone into a false sense of security so you can sneak up on them in the post season. The same way that home field wasn’t important after they lost it. I have to hand it to ya. Steeler fans are amazing. Reality and facts be damned

But you have not really made a point at all besides nothing matters and we kicked everyones ass, which you did not at all! It’s funny that you guys can turn a meaningless game into like the biggest game of the regular season. That game meant nothing. they played so they don’t take a complete 3 weeks off. You still have to stay sharp and what is better to stay sharp than against a worthy opponent? They weren’t going to give away this great chance for a little practice come on.
Look before the game Big Ben even told reporters that he was going to be able to play ‘loose’ and try some things out because it is not a must win. You can’t go on the air and say that it is meaningless game as a player but that is a big HINT that they are not coming out for blood. It was just another game, and sure they probably would have liked to win but it is quite obvious that they were already satisfied
by Bleed-Black&Gold on Jan 6, 2009 12:30 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
LOL and do you call that being creamed??
The final score was 31-14.
The simulated snap count penalty was phantom and very unlikely to repeat. -4 points.
so thats 27-14.
steeler miss an easy field goal 27-17.
The first touchdown you scored on the steelers were not ready because of an offsides call, they thought the whistle was going to be blown and were not ready for the play -7. 20-17
you can argue that in a meaningful game Big Ben doesn’t fumble at the goal line and just takes what he gets +3 20-20.
There are other breaks that you guys got, another big play on an offsides and the D was not paying attention because of the penalty and on a 3rd and 20 the steelers don’t blitz the house but instead drop back, allowing you to get close to the first down that would later on lead to a TD. Also at the end of the game the steelers were playing their 4/5th string WR just getting him some action and calling horrible draw plays on first down. They were experimenting with you guys and didn’t approach the game like the past 4 that we needed to get into the playoffs. If you don’t believe it you don’t have to, you can just pray that you beat the ravens, so we can show yall how the real Steelers play.
So i want you guys to think you ‘creamed’ us, the game was already closer than the score tells, 14-10 late in the 3rd quarter. Just don’t be too suprised when you lose in the AFC championship….

pretty ignorant. you need to be able to read a game and realize what is happening. You guys won the game, but it was not a blowout. But i guess this is why you learn more from a loss than from a win. Can’t wait to beat yall in Tennessee, that is, if you can get past the ravens. Which i believe you can.
Nobody is saying you didn’t win the game, if you were a smart nfl fan, you would realize that the game was not a blowout and the steelers didn’t get ‘creamed’ just as they didn’t in 05 @ the #1 colts when they actually lost worse, but ended up handling them in the playoffs despite some really bad calls. i am not going to sit here and name call like a 6yr old child that you obviously want to do. I have nothing more to say to you besides grow some maturity and don’t insult people from behind a screen. Good luck on Sunday.

it is meaningless.
The number one seed doesn’t gurantee you nothing but a bullseye on your chest!! Look what happened to yall now! Just a statistic now! you made it to be the 12th #1 AFC seed to not make it past the Divisional Round! Congrats!!
Ok so it is not meaningless, winning that game gave yall a harder road to the SB thats what it did. You would have had to beat the 2 most physical teams in the NFL to get there and if we won we would have had to play the other 2 most physical teams in the NFL! Looks like we got the better end so far! Now we just gotta show up Sunday and not turn the ball over and stay in cozy Pittsburgh and beat the Ratbirds a third time, by not turning the ball over and we earn ourselves a trip to Tampa!
Now looks like we got homefield advantage throughout after all!
Congrats on beating us in Week 16! Here’s a medal.

The only thing that matters ..................
And those 13 wins don’t mean diddly right now. The other teams you mentioned could care less how many the Titans have won so far and/or if they were one of the 13. It’s a one game season each week and it’s win this week or you’re done. The Titans are definitely playing well this year but we’re yet to see if they have what it takes to stand up to the playoff pressure. It’s true that all of us are looking hardest at “this year”, but during the 1st quarter of the Colts/Chargers game they anounced that Indianapolis had now made the playoffs 9 of the last 10 years. That’s the kind of “extended excellence” that was spoken of in a previous post. Being a Tennessee resident I hope your guys can make a good showing but post game towel stomping, touchdown towel waving, and other forms of undisciplined/amateurish behavior aren’t going to gain you the respect you so greatly desire. At this point I’m going with the “Why don’t we just wait and see what happens on the field?” call. But I strongly suggest that you and your Titan fan friends visit Canton, Ohio some day and see if you might gain a greater appreciation for all the years that pro football (NFL, AFL, etc) was played before anyone ever dreamed of bringing a team to Nashville.
One final note:
Listening to some of the towel talk coming out of Nashville, it honestly seems to me that Titan fans & players were jealous of the horde of Steeler fans that invaded your stadium the other week with towels in hand. Perhaps this could be a good learning opportunity for the Titans franchise – if they could consistently field a championship caliber team they might be able to sell enough tickets to fill their own stadium and keep all those opposing team fans out.

NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE STEELERS
a team with one outstanding facet and a tragic flaw. when you look at the steelers record this season, it is blatantly obvious that you lose to the really good teams and beat everyone else, and no baltimore is not a really good team. when 80% of your super bowl rings come from the disco era, everyone else has officially lost interest.

Jealous Steelers Fan
Here is all I have to say about the Steelers in the upcoming playoff game.
That offensive line is going to be the end of that team this year. The defense may be a steel curtain, but that o-line is a wet paper bag!
I think that the Steelers are one and done this year my friend.
My prediction. Ravens over Dolphins today and next week Titans/Ravens (bring them on I want to whoop them again) and Chargers/Steelers.
Sets up a nice rematch from last years playoffs for the Titans by hosting the Chargers in the AFC Title game.
by mbftitan on Jan 4, 2009 9:37 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I really like you guys .......................
Well I was gonna “Go Away” but you guys are so fun to talk to that I can’t resist.
Per the comment about “you lose to the really good teams” I’m sure everyone knows by now that an 8-8 team that commits several devastating turnovers can still beat a 12-4 team with an MVP quarterback if they suck it up and make the big plays when the money’s on the line. It’s the playoffs baby. Except for home field advantage the rest of the season is history.
As far as Super Bowl rings and eras, do you suppose most Titans would care which era the rings came from if they just had any?
And as far as “No one cares about the Steelers” I’ll bet you a can of Skoal Wintergreen and 2 dip cups that, outside of this blog, the Steelers have thousands (probably hundreds of thousands!) more fans worldwide than the Titans. Do you remember looking around the stadium that Sunday and seeing towels, towels, and more towels and thinking “What the …. This is OUR house”?
Mr mbftitan – I don’t think the “wet paper bag” is a totally accurate description, but you are certainly correct in this assessment. Thankfully the Chargers may not have the pass rush that some teams do. The defense has covered a multitude of Ben’s sins this year but if the turn-it-over Ben shows up next weekend there will be trouble in Steel City. However if I-can-still-work-the-magic Ben shows up things could be great, especially with LT riding the bike all evening. Yes I know that other smallish Charger guy can run fast but if Troy P and/or Harrison get a few direct hits on him he might melt. By the way, your predictions on matchups were very accurate. But Flacco has matured a lot since you played the Ravens earlier and their D is “almost” as strong as the Curtain. You better get all those home boys stompin’ more than towels because they’re gonna need to be flat out crazy mean to take it to Baltimore.
Another wild card for the Steelers is whether or not Ben will even be able to play. Rumor has it that he’ll come into the stadium riding a Harley with no helmet, lay the bike down on the turf hitting his head on the goal post in the process, then jump up and throw 3 touchdown passes in the 1st half. But then again we could see Leftwich right from the start.
Is “gramsey” a shortened form of grandmother? Most grandmothers I know are nicer and offer cookies to people they’re visiting with.
Where’s that army guy?

nah man, No way Leftwich is playing any part of the playoffs, unless Big Ben is knocked unconscious. lol
I like BL but in the playoffs you gotta go with the winner.
These Titans fans just don’t get it into their heads that a regular season doesn’t gurantee you any sort of trophy. Most of the time, probably over 75% of the time, the #1 seed of the AFC doesn’t even get to the AFC championship game.
Hopefully those young guys over in Tennessee who actually play have the same attitude as these guys so that the Ravens can give them a rude awakening. I originally and still possibly want Tennessee in the championship so we can beat them but at the same time if baltimore beats them i will be just as happy.

The #1 seed in the AFC has made the AFC Championship game 11 out of the last 18 years (1990-2007.) That means they DO make it 61% of the time as opposed to your 75% not making it. The steelers fans are...
…obviously trying to say that they have experience (winning) in the playoffs and the Titans just don’t. You can say whatever you want about how that doesn’t matter now and all that bullshit, but it does matter. Nobody gives a damn if the Steelers, Titans, or even the Ravens won important games in the regular season. BUT, if you have a team that has successfully won PLAYOFF GAMES (on the road) and won super bowls, I believe you have a significant advantage in a PLAYOFF GAME over a team that doesn’t.
To Titans Fans: I don’t even understand why you guys are acting like you are going to play each other already. The Titans beat a “young” Flacco by 3 measly points. Don’t get me wrong I’m not trying to take that away from you guys or even lessen the accomplishment, BUT to act like your gonna walk all over that same team that now has an “experienced” Flacco doesn’t make any sense.
To Steeler Fans: Your team still has to beat the smokin’ hot Chargers before you even think about the AFC Championship game as well.
THIS IS THE PLAYOFFS. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN

Dude you don’t even know what your talking about. The Steelers won Super Bowl XL in 2006. Since you’re probably to dumb to know your roman numerals I’ll just tell you it’s 40. Now last time I checked 2006 wasn’t during the 70s.
by ihatethesteelers on Jan 5, 2009 5:20 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Do you have to be like that?
Yes they won a Superbowl in 2006, even here in Nashville we’ve had electricity that long. But their tradition of Superbowl wins was in the 70’s and 80’s (wins in 75, 76, 79 and 80 and a loss in 96). If fact in the last 10 years (the length of time the Titans have been in Tennessee) we have exactly the same number of Superbowl appearances, we have a loss and they have a win. So I guess being stupid, I wonder what the hell those four wins in the 70’s and 80 and the loss in 96 have to do with the current team. We are smart enough to know that there is an advantage to having players on your team with playoff experience and a Superbowl win but you said “super bowls” indicating that you were including other Superbowl wins. There is also an advantage to having an O-line that hasn’t given up over 47 sacks.
Also most of the people who comment on this blog have said that they are worried about the Ravens. The fact that this game will be here in Nashville and that we are rested and have our D-line healthy is reason for optimism.
Third WTF do you think you will accomplish by coming to this FAN site of a team and calling us dumb?

Actually, Mr.-too-late-to-the-party-and-oh-by-the-way-my-grammar-sucks, the argument by these idiot mouth-breathing steeler fans who come on OUR site and talk shit about OUR team
Was that the steelers have more “tradition” than the Titans and have “more representation in the Hall of Fame.”
So, unless all of that “tradition” and “more representation in the Hall of Fame” started after 2006, then you need to take your douchcanoe ass back to your little stinkbird blog.

and I said super “bowls” because it was a comment that was supposed to be universal as in any team with more super bowl experience has an advantage, NOT just the steelers. Notice how I said “if you have a team”?
Maybe you should focus less on grammar and pay attention.
by ihatethesteelers on Jan 6, 2009 1:28 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Ok, this is fun.
In the beginging of the sentence you say “if you have ‘a’ team”. ‘A’ denotes one team. Singular. Then you use the words “super bowls” that is plural indicating multiple super bowls. If the team (singular) has won superbowls then you are counting more than one. Now you’re (notice the -‘re ending? Indicating a contraction of ’you’ and ’are’) snippy because you were wrong and look like a jerk?

FYI I got to this site by googling “Terrible Towel” and/or “Keith Bullock”. I never saw anything that indicated it was a “closed” site for FANS of a specific team or that a “grandmother” owned this house. I do know that if this house belonged to either of my grandmas there would be cookies rather than daggers on the table. And I agree with the person who made the observation that an early season win over the Ravens doesn’t in any way guarantee success over them this weekend. If you Titan guys are so confident about your team and/or yourselves, why do you continue to get so emotional instead of just having a friendly discussion? In doing so you really just set yourselves up for more kidding. So just chill. if your team beats the Ravens this weekend (and avoids the sideshow "antics") they will certainly gain the respect of many including myself, but respect generally has to be earned and isn’t given away lightly. And to whoever made the comment, I personally wouldn’t call the Chargers “smokin hot”. I do believe they won four in a row to rally into the playoffs, but Indy had won 8 in a row and they’ll be watching the rest of the playoffs on TV. Anybody have any definitive info on the status of LT and/or Big Ben for the upcoming game?

Tennessee Folks,
I just found this link to a recent (August 2008) espn.com rating of NFL teams fan base. Pursuant to this discussion, I found it interesting that the Steelers ranked numero uno in fan base while your team ranked down a ways. I don’t have time to line up all the stuff (I don’t understand why cut & paste doesn’t work better here) but the factors are as interesting as the text itself. Travel and Hate are two items that might be particularly pertinent to this discussion. Regardless of who you root for, this article is insightful. But I’ll warn you right now, if you’re a towel hater you’ll be ticked off when the see the picture at the top of the article and some might also be offended that another disco era team ranked 2nd.

No team is as woven into the fabric of a city. The organization’s stability has a lot to do with it, as generations of Steelers fans relate to the tradition of ownership (Rooneys), smashmouth football, quality head coaches (league-low three since 1969) and success (five Super Bowl titles). The season-ticket waiting list is extremely long and the consecutive sellout streak of 299 games, including playoffs, is unbelievable.

Titans fans have lived off reputation for some time. When their building opened in 1999 as Adelphia Coliseum, it was incredibly loud and could throw an unfamiliar visitor off. It’s been quite some time, however, since the volume was a real factor. Fans were also spoiled by early success — the team went to the Super Bowl in its first season as the Titans and had the best record in the following regular season. In SEC country, the tailgating is hard-core. But there are empty seats at LP Field when things aren’t going well and ticket holders in the club sections generally spend too much time inside.

True confessions
Good morning,
I told you, I was looking for some additional info on Bulluck and the towel incident and wound up here. I don’t normally take a lot of time to blog because it tends to be time consuming and can become a negative experience. I was born and raised in Central Pa in the early fifties. I was primarily a baseball fan (Pittsburgh Pirates) growing up but got really interested in the Steelers as a college student and young adult during the Bradshaw, Joe Greene, Curtain era. I moved to Tennessee during that time period and have lived here ever since. I’m not really looking to cause trouble, just enjoying an invigorating conversation with some fellow Tennesseans. But you guys do seem to take this fan stuff very seriously and it probably makes it easier to stir up “trouble” with a few words. To me the bottom line is:
Tennessee is an up and coming franchise and may make a multi year run at extended success. But it’s just not yet a vintage (pre disco era) NFL team like the Packers, Giants, Cowboys, Steelers, etc, nor is it yet a “new era” proven team like New England, Indianapolis, or San Diego. Hopefully continued success will come over time. But you’d better eat some gun powder and get ready for those Ravens. That’s a “real man’s” football team.
Did you check out that fan rating web site? It’s a set of statistics that really demonstrates what we’ve been talking about. Most of the top teams are the older ones with a storied history.

And I never felt like I was attacking you, only presenting another (maybe more factual) side of life. If you look up through the posts you’ll see info about the top NFL teams over the past 10 yrs, the leading NFL offensive and defensive teams this year, the NFL strength of schedule rankings for this year, the top defensive players in the NFL this year, a recent ESPN rating of fan support for all NFL teams, etc. All these are pretty unbiased and factual pieces of information. It’s just an opinion, but I believe discussions have a lot more credence if they contain more facts and less subjective “My team’s better than your team” or “My guy’s gonna stomp on your guy” statements. Plus, while you guys seem to be the most happy when you’re all having a big group hug over your favorite team, I already know how great the Steelers are and how good, passionate Steeler fans talk, think, and act so I’m enjoying talking with someone with a different mindset.
You’ll probably get upset again but I’m going to share one more comment about fan/player/franchise demeanor that I believe is relevant. Here’s an email conversation I had today with a Titans season ticket holder that I work with.
—————————————————————————————————————————
Me:
“At lunch I was reading a USA Today article about the upcoming Giants vs Eagles game. Despite being the defending Super Bowl champions, Eli Manning and his fellow players were talking very respectfully about the Eagles’ recent play, capabilities, and the challenges they would face this weekend. I took a moment to contrast that with Mr. Bullock’s response to questions about his recent towel stomping incident: "da’s right, anyone who comes to our house tryin’ to win – we’ gonna stomp ’em out”. I’m sure you can see the difference in approach. Your guys may have a pretty good team this year and they may even beat the Ravens. But if they exude the same attitude as Bullock (does he get his material from Mike Tyson?), one of their main successes will be in further defining all of us in the Volunteer state as a bunch of ghetto rednecks from Tennessee. :)
My co-worker:
“You are a Steeler’s fan aren’t you. To be honest, I thought the towel stomping thing was a little bit low class and uncalled for myself. However, I am a Titans fan and I have to stay faithful. I guess we all have some bad ones in our group. I truly would not have expected that from Bullock as he has always been a good player and I liked him but hate he did that. Hated when Haynesworth done that bad thing as well. However, I can not stand Ray Lewis on the Ravens either as he is some criminal himself. Hey, glad Ben is going to be okay. Steeler’s game was definitely tough. All Bullock did by stomping the towel is add fuel to the fire if we have to play Pittsburgh again.”
——————————————————————————————
Now do you see the difference between the Giants and your guy and/or the difference between much of the conversation (at least with me) on this blog and the response I got from my gracious Titans season ticket holder co-worker?
Well I don’t understand it but a friend of mine told me today that the Steelers are also the favorite pro football team amongst female football fans. Given their blue collar look and home city this sounds a bit odd, but I’m off for a little more googling. See ya.

Why can't you stop this crap?
And you still haven’t told us what you are trying to accomplish by signing up and only visiting our site and spelling Keith Bulluck’s name wrong.
We KNOW that the Steelers are popular. It does not mean that they have the upper hand if the two teams play again.
The Cowboys are popular too, go over to their blog and start this crap.
And does your “Titan Season Ticket Holder” co-worker know that he doesn’t know how to spell BULLUCK, either?
And what is a "ghetto redneck?
You are not going to change our mind about anything, why are you trying?

Just can't think of anything cute
My apologies to you guys and Mr. Bulluck. My co-worker apparently didn’t know this spelling either so I’ll try to alert her to this oversight so she doesn’t embarrass herself this weekend. I think I originally got his name from a towel article and just cut and paste it into google. If you put in Keith Bullock you will get some hits on Keith Bulluck articles.
If you were a Steelers fan during the 70’s you’d know why we’re not great friends with the Cowboys. I do like the Black & Blue Ravens (because they’re a lot like the Steelers) but they’re also the enemy so I can’t show it too much.
The main reason I’ve posted some “this year” info about the Steelers is that one or more of you spoke about the Steelers being a “disco era” team and that you wanted to talk about “this year”. I don’t know for sure who’s the most dominant team (and you wouldn’t agree anyway) but I do know the Steelers have a lot of current team and individual awards and accomplishments, both on and off the field.
I honestly don’t think you guys will beat Baltimore, but if you do and the Steelers win you better get ready for the invasion of the towel army again. Maybe the stadium staff could develop a type of metal detector that will catch yellow cotton? :)
FYI I did a small bit of research on Bulluck and saw him described as “brash and charismatic”. I’ve seen the brash part but I doubt anyone in Pittsburgh would call him “charismatic”. I also read a little bit about his upbringing. It looks like he’s overcome a lot and tries to share the blessings he’s been given. Some people might define “ghetto redneck” as a guy from the ‘hood who’s now living in Tennessee acting like a redneck. But that’s just speculation.
Have a good day.

Why would you even use that term?

I should have got a copyright ..............
It must be a useful descriptive term because I see that gramsey has already used it in a post today. Of course that might just be a 2nd chapter in the “Titans copy Steelers” saga that we’ve already seen with the Blue Rally Towel. I hope you guys stomp on the toes (and towels) of whoever in the TItans organization had that idea.
Do you think Bulluck (notice the correct spelling) will follow the copying trend and put on his pre-game black face paint using the trademark Ray Lewis look? :)
