Tennessee Titans Sign QB Chris Simms

Simms_medium
As has been mentioned by numerous people in numerous spots on this blog, the Titans have officially agreed to terms with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms.  His career numbers:

G Rating Comp Att Pct Yards TD INT
19 71.2 291 492 59.2 3087 12 17

I am not real sure that Simms is a better option than Ingle Martin, especially when you consider that Martin knows the playbook, but this is the direction the Titans have decided to go.  I am glad to see Simms over Joey Harrington and Quinn Gray.

Now we know what they have.  Tonight and tomorrow we will wrap-up the Jags coverage and start to look towards the Bengals.

When was the last time...

the Titans went into a game with a non-mobile QB? I’m excited to see what we can do with accurate (more accurate) throws being thrown to our receivers. Maybe this is all part of a bigger thing and i’m hoping that if Simms or Collins dont throw the next 15 games away for us we are a better team than we think.

Better?

For us to be a better team than I think… we would have to go 19-0 this year.

I know it’s only been 1 game but based on what I have seen so far we could win with any almost QB. Our defense is totally dominant, our run game is solid, Chris Johnson is a TD waiting to happen, and I really believe Dinger will scheme a lot of our opponents. We just need somebody who wont turn the ball over.

All this QB drama has be down, but not because I am worried about the team. VY threw 2 picks against a great Jags defense and we still dominated that game in a way that the final score does not accurately reflect.

I am down because I am worried about Vince. Some people don’t care, but I remember his rookie year when he revitalized this team. He brought enegy and excitement. Now the fans are talking like they don’t want him to start anymore. They freakin boo him! It’s sad. Not saying he doesn’t need to get his head strait, but at the same time it’s depressing to see how anxious we are to throw someone away when they don’t meet our expectations as fast as we think they should.

What? He has feelings and emotions? “Bench him!”

Huh? He cares about what the fans think? “Man up!”

Ridiculous

I am a Titans fan before I am a Young fan, but dammit give the man a break. He’s a 25 year old human being. Not some robot built in a lab solely to take us to the Superbowl.

Fisher will probably stick by him and when he is healthy he will probably start, because that’s how Fisher is. If something else happens and Collins (or Simms) starts. I will wish Vince the best and I wont drag his name through the mud or talk bad about him. I will root for the Titans and fully expect us to win the Superbowl, just like I did when the season started. I will enjoy every game and every TD. However, I will also be sad for Vince, because I fully capable of loving my team without hating him for being mortal.

Oh! And Merril Hodge will still be an idiot

Neil O'Donnel was always very good off the bench.

Also, I think Warren Moon might have had a bit of success with this franchise.

I don’t know if Simms is gonna be more accurate than VY, but from the outside looking in at Tampa, it seemed like he didn’t get much of a chance. One halfway decent season, one season marred by a aserious injury, and then they gave the team to Jeff Garcia—which was probably the right move. Still, they could have kept Simms and groomed him for the future ala Aaron Rogers, but they didn’t, and that seems to be based on personal stuff more than anything, at least to me.

That said, I sure as Hell hope that Simms doesn’t have to play anytime soon.

It’ll be interesting to see Collins in command for an extended period of time. He should be much, much better than the last time he was the starter, but how good when folks game-plan for him is an open questrion.

Collins should perform well coming off the bench

He played well last year in the game leading up to the playoffs and he stepped in on Sunday and made the necessary throws to keep the Titans ahead. He is a seasoned veteran which gives me a lot of confidence in him. Chris Simms is a questionable pick. I watched him in his Texas days and he wasn’t great, he was very good but lacked steady precision, I think he is intelligent and can run the offense, but will have plenty of picks. The current Longhorn quarterback Colt McCoy is as good as they come precision and intelligence wise, he will be a NFL great in the future if his body can hold up to the pounding now.
Getting back to the current situation. Kerry Collins will get a chance and I hope he makes the most of it. The team really needs him to calm nerves and be a a steady performer. I think he has been around long enough to have seen just about everything and should be able to step in and manage the game and then some.
IF Collins plays well over the next couple of games, let him play, if not, give Simms a chance.
VY’s sprain will probably last as long as his mental health is in doubt. Fisher is very loyal, but I’m sure he thinks enough is enough and wants to go a different direction for awhile. While this is very disruptive to the organization the Titans can pull through it just fine. VY needs some counseling, and after that I don’t know.

I'm not too worried

Collins can win us some games if he needs to I think. And I’ve always liked Simms. But our run game is fantastic. Chris Johnson is going to continue to embarrass people and LenDale is just gonna run over them all day long. And that defense, man…

Titans baby!
