Tennessee Titans Morning Links: The First of Many Wide Receivers Editions, I'm Guessing
Anybody think Broncos cast-off Glenn Martinez solves our WR problem? Me neither...
As Scout.com rumor says the Titans may be interested in meeting with Patriots 2006 1st round pick Chad Jackson, which I can dig. Much like the Martinez situation you have to doubt that he'd make much of an impact, but at least they're trying to find someone.
So are the Titans' WRs just not talented, or are they soft? I say both, in several cases.
In case you missed it in the offseason: the Jaguars hired former Bills head coach Gregg Williams, who was our defensive coordinator during the Super Bowl run, to coach their defense. Williams, a notoriously arrogant jerk, is already creating enemies in Jacksonville.
Gary Estwick waxes philosophic about Chris Johnson, botches RB coach's name.
Good piece on Keith Bulluck from a New York area newspaper makes not so bold statement:
He's probably the greatest defender in Tennessee Titans history already.
Agreed.
The Titans are partnering with LP to help metro school kids and teachers with free classroom supplies. To help this great cause fans are encouraged to bring school supplies to donate to the Titans-Jacksonville game this Sunday.
The 13 biggest hits in football history includes Chris Henry nearly getting his capa detaded from his head.

Man, that WR situation is just TERRIBLE. It's a travesty that we're a week out...
…and STILL trying to address the issue.
I mean, you didn’t want to take a guy in the first? Fine. No problem. “Crazy Legs” Chris Johnson seems like a good pick-up. But no matter how much impact Jason Jones has, there were any number of WRs on the board at that point that could have helped the team more, and D-Line depth could have been addressed later, especially with the signing of Kearse.

Your wrong
I disagree. Which receiver at that point in the draft was worth taking? Limas Sweed? No. We got a pretty good one out of Lavelle, but I don’t see how Limas, or even Devin Thomas is THAT much better than Lavelle. There was not that much talent at receiver this year in the draft.-
I like Hawkins
but I would have liked Sweed and Hawkins. We need more than just 1 reciever. Our WRs wouldn’t make the # 2 spot on most teams

Just a small correction
But even if the Titans wanted Sweed, whom I personally think was the best all-around receiver draft (obviously, I’m a Horns fan), they couldn’t have gotten him in the 2nd because Pittsburgh nabbed him the pick before. Some say that Tennessee should have done what Washington did and trade down to the second round (Washington picked up both Devin Thomas and Malcom Kelly), but since Chris Johnson seems to have quickly grown on Titans fans, I think no Titan fan seems to want a receiver more than Johnson any longer.

It's still going to take a while before I believe for a second that taking Craig Stevens over Earl Bennett was the right move...

Unless Stevens becomes
the next Frank Wycheck or Earl is a complete bust, which isn’t going to happen, I will never believe that was the right move.

Exactly
I guess they thought we already had a slew of WRs with immaculate hands, good enough speed to torch NFL caliber SEC DBs on the regular and who already ran precise routes.

I was going to post
a link to Earl Bennett’s 75 yd punt return for a TD against Seattle, but I thought it might be too upsetting. I’m telling myself that Jackson went to Oakland first, Cincinnati second, and Tennessee third, just so he wouldn’t have to retrace his steps. The most significant fact of the city paper piece http://nashvillecitypaper.com/news.php?viewStory=62505
was that VY and Jackson are pals. Maybe that means a better chance of us getting a talented WR. Prolly not.
I agree with not taking 2 WRs
Let’s look back,
2007 we took 2 WRs… Paul Williams (3rd) and Chris Davis (4th)….. those turned out well
2005 we took 3…. Roby (3rd), Brandon Jones (3rd), Roydell Williams (4th).
clearly we do not know how to draft Wide Receivers. The only guy in there worth maybe anything is B Jones and that is my cloudy Tennessee titans brain saying that, which has been forced into thinking that horrible wide receivers are decent.
So yeah it was probably better off that we took anything but a WR past the first round
Or maybe
If we took one before the 3rd round he would be good.
Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles
Right.
I didn’t want to take another platoon of receivers. I wanted to get ONE that would actually work out. Instead of that we got:
1. A great RB. That’s probably okay—unless he gets hurt because he’s undersized.
2. A decent DT/DE. He might even be good, eventually. And that might be okay, but it seems iffy given the current strengths of the roster.
3. A TERRIFIC blocking TE. Which is fine until you factor in the strengths of the team and the fact that we had to keep FOUR just to keep this guy on the roster. And again, given the strength of the O-Line, it seems kind of an iffy choice.
I’m not talking about reaching here. I don’t care where the experts thought these guys should go. I just find it ludicrous that with the regular season about to start, there’s STILL no one on the roster who can catch who’s actual, primary job is catching.

In the front office's defense ( I guess)
nobody saw 12 receivers going between our 1st and 2nd picks. I still like to tell myself they would have drafted Sweed had he not gone the pick before us…

I'm okay with the Jason Jones pick. It's the 3rd rounder that's really a mystery to me.
