VY and KC: By the Numbers
At 4-0, there is a lot of clamoring that Kerry Collins makes us a better team. That he's a better passer, throws a better ball. To the naked eye, I can understand these sentiments. He has a more orthodox throwing style, and a big arm. But the stats tell a different story:
VYs first three starts last year (w/o Chris Johnson):
42 completions 67 attempts 62.7% Completion percentage 3 PATD 2 INT 1 RUTD 426 PAYD 96 RUYD 10.14 yards per completion
KC first three starts this year:
45 completions 83 attempts 54.2% Completion percentage 2 PATD 1 INT 0 RUTD 512 PAYD 32 RUYD 11.37 Yards per completion
This isn't meant to diminish what Kerry has done. He's done what's asked of him: performed well as a backup. But, these numbers are very similar. What you don't see here is that the defense has to account for Vince's legs which can make our running game even better. I'd also argue that Kerry has done less (or the same) with more around him. Chris Johnson's speed was something missing from the 2007 offense.
Unless Kerry gets dramatically more efficient, I don't see the upside in starting him over a healthy (mentally and physically) Vince Young.

The catch to all of this is
how are we going to know when/if VY is right mentally? He had a lot of people around this team believing he was more mature than ever this off-season, but that’s not the case.

We'll know
Because he’ll be under center. I have a lot of faith in Jeff Fisher and his ability to evaluate that situation.
And, Michael, you’re right, it is important that he gets healthy mentally. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, all we have to make judgements on is things that have happened in the past. Vince bounced back from a similar situation at Texas. There is no reason to think he can’t do it again.

Does Vince even want to play?
Is the team behind him?
Look, I’m a fan of the team. I’ll be a fan of whoever the team starts at QB. But I’m losing faith in VY, and he’s not doing a lot to make me think he’s gonna get back in there. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong. I dunno. I mean, it’s fine if he does.
That said, VY is clearly NOT the savior of the Titans. KC is an old guy who is nevertheless getting the job done, even in the face of some decent defenses.

You’re jumping the gun with that assessment.

I would agree
Currently the Titans don’t need a savior. You can’t save something that’s 4-0. We just need an efficient QB that takes care of the football.

Well, that was my point. Titans are 4-0 with VY on the sidelines.

VY wasn't on the sidelines for the majority of game 1.
And the Jags are the only .500 or better team we’ve beaten this season.

our opponents are 3-8 in games we didn't play against them
and that number is also skewed because they’ve lost to some of the best teams this year: Bills, Giants, Steelers etc. It’s not like these teams are getting beaten by the Cardinals and Chiefs.

It's too early in the year to add in that strength of schedule stuff.
The Jags have a good team, and the Texans have a decent team. Moreover, the Titans have won games they were supposed to win.
I mean, come on, you can’t expect them to beat folks they haven’t played yet. Moreover, are the Ravens gonna suck next week after they’re 2-2?

But that's what I'm saying.
We were supposed to beat these teams (save the Jags, who were favored to win IIRC), even with Young out. How does going 4-0 against them prove anything when Vince was in the game against the only opponent most people expected us to struggle with?

One turnover per a bunch of attempts. That's a telling statistic that VY couldn't have produced.

Really?
Vince only turned the ball over one more time than Kerry in the first three starts last year. You say it’s telling, but I’m not exactly sure what it’s telling you. I’ll take 2 TD’s for one extra turnover all day.

Look, I don't want to argue with you.
What’s the point? I hope you guys are right, but I personally don’t have a lot of faith. It is what it is.

And that's fine.
I don’t want to argue either…I just want people sticking to the facts. People are treating KC as this great “game manager” when his stats are nearly identical to Vince at the beginning of last year.

If VY had kept playing like he started last year we wouldn't be in this position
The problem was that things went south, and when things went south VY didn’t react very well and it hurt the team.

I'll also add
That other than one off hand comment by Bullock, there is no evidence to support the idea that the team is no longer behind VY.

You can't read too much into that...
I’d wager that Fisher is telling them to keep their mouths shut.
Either way, to deduce that the locker room isn’t behind him because they aren’t showering him with praise in the media is a bit of a stretch.

Oh there's evidence, but it's all hearsay, anonymous reports by the likes of Peter King and Adam Schefter...
I go bak and forth every day trying to figure out what to make of it.

Evidence
and hearsay are two completely different things. Unless it comes out of a coach’s or player’s mouth, I wouldn’t put too much faith in it.

i always bring up the numbers too
and while they are comparable, i definitely think that the offense is better now with collins. if anything, its because other teams believe that collins is a better passer and are less likely to load up the box. with that said, i would much rather have vy starting any day of the week and twice on sundays if he can get his act together.
hopefully the light will go on at some point and he breaks out of this anti vince vibe or whatevers hes stuck in.
also, big ups to the rest of the titans for not even letting this be a distraction and just plowing through teams every week. i know vy is injured so theres no big controversy, but still, i think the way the team has handled the situation has been awesome.
by rolypoly32 on Sep 29, 2008 10:51 PM CDT 0 recs
the team has handled it extremely well, I think a large part of that is because
of Fisher, he is a better coach than most probably realize. It is the things he says (or doesn’t say) that hold everything together, he remains tight lipped in times of controversy and he also knows how to say things when necessary to put the best light on it. There are not many coaches as good at that aspect of the game as Fisher is.
The team beleives in Kerry Collins to get the job done. That is huge, they go out and work well as a team. Their again, I credit Fisher for not letting what happened be a distraction, rather as a reason to show that they can get it done with someone else at QB. There is no reason to bring someone else in as long as Collins continues to perform. Not only that, but theTitans are actually scoring TD this year instead of field goals. I like Bironas, but I like 7 points better !

If you take away Chris Johnson's Red Zone production
The Red Zone numbers look remarkably like last year. Everyone giving KC all this credit for the offensive improvement needs to watch CJ play a little more. CJ is the difference maker, folks.

Actually I give the defense more credit than the offense in winning games this
year AND last year. The defense has been the strongest part of the team then and now. This year the offense is clicking better because of several things and definitely not just because of Collins. Collins has provided the leadership needed and has performed when asked to. Chris Johnson was an excellent addition to the team as well. He is super quick and can break it at any time, the high stepping stuff is a turn off, but other than that he is terriffic. The receivers seem to be doing a little better this year as well. Is it because of Collins, that I would have to say yes to. Maybe it is just my perception, but they do seem to be in sync with Collins more than they were with Young. But to say I am giving all the credit for the wins to Collins is just not true. He has done his job and that is what is expected of him, along with every other player on the team.

I would like to see VY start but..
if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. No reason to change anything at this point unless he struggles..
by b3tts32 on Sep 30, 2008 11:23 AM CDT 0 recs
the biggest difference i see between KC and VY...
and i don’t have any numbers whatsoever to support this… but the one thing KC can do that VY can’t…. is make a nice 5-step drop, make the first read, step up in rhythm, and deliver a nice, catchable ball from the pocket.
this is what sets apart good QBs from bad ones… consistent, quick decision-making in rhythm.
