Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Does Gus Want The Biddy? Come Get The Biddy Edition
4-0! 4-0! 4-0! 4-0! 4-0! 4-0! 4-0! 4-0! 4-0! 4-0! 4-0! 4-0! We're 4-0!
Congratulations are in order for Jeff Fisher, who is now tied with 49ers and Panthers coach George Seifert for career wins with 124. The big difference between the two is that Fisher didn't inherit a 14 win team and sleep walk to the Super Bowl.
Paul Kuharsky reports that Chris 'Crazy Legs' Johnson continues to impress to the point Titans officials are trying to reign in the love-fest... good luck with that. PK also notes that Vince wasn't exactly attentive and involved on the sidelines for most of the game.
Give some love to the Titans D for bottling up the best RB in the league... any team in the NFL would take holding Peterson to 18 rushes for 80 yards with glee.
Gus Frerotte says Boom King's hit was dirty. Somebody get him a biddy, please.
We're also going to need a biddy for Mike Florio and some Vikings fans.
The unstoppable Big Albert Haynesworth got 2 sacks Sunday to give him 5 sack in 4 games. However, even he was hilariously not too impressed with his last one:
"He was kind of just running around not really knowing much," Haynesworth said. "It was just kind of a free sack that he gave me. I thanked him while I was on him, because that was just kind of a gift. That’s probably one of the longest sacks, and he just gave it to me, but, hey, I’ll take it."
Looks like former Titans GM Floyd Reese actually wants the Lions job. It'd be interesting to see them hire someone who has at least built a winner before.
I'm a little late in relaying it to you guys, but my man Pinoy Titan sent along a great read on super-beastly CB Cortland Finnegan from nfl.com.

Reese should get that job in Detriot.
The man may not be the best GM in football, but he is a damn sight better than many. Detriot might end up with a nasty salary cap purge at some point eight years from now, but they’ll at least spend five of those eight in the playoffs.

"Was Vince Young holding us back? It becomes harder and harder to say no each week."
Baloney. That article is making a mistake in comparing last year’s team with this year’s team by assuming that the difference in Collins. The difference is Chris Johnson.
Through 3 starts against Cincinnati, Houston, and Minnesota, Collins has 2 TDs and 1 Int, with 171 YPG, and averaging 6.32 YPA. His completion % is a bare 55.6% in those three games.
Collins has done what he needs to do for the Titans to win, but lest we forget, we all figured that we had a shot at winning our first 6 games outright with Vince under center. Collins still has yet to convince me that we can win a Super Bowl with him playing QB.

Your Vince Young apologist here...
Zu Long beat me to the punch. Chris Johnson brings a completely different dimension to this team that stretches the defense and opens things up in the passing game.
I don’t want to downplay what KC has done; he’s been great. But, we all have seen what VY’s capable of. If he finds that fire again, we’d be crazy to start Collins over Young, period.
by SuperHorn on Sep 29, 2008 9:26 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Not only Chris
I’m sorry, but our receivers didn’t “miracle” themselves into acceptable playing form, they have a QB that they trust to put the ball where it needs to be. That’s one of the few reasons I can see for us generating a passing attack now.
We didn’t have one before. Vince, for all his skills and “intangibles”, was scaring no one with his arm. Except maybe Jeff Fisher.
by Rustmeister on Sep 29, 2008 9:29 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
What acceptable playing form?
They still drop passes left and right. Certainly changing our QB hasn’t improved our QB accuracy in any way.

Actually it has a ton.
Not sure which games you were watching, but you don’t think it is strange that all of the sudden passes are hitting guys in the hands and not the feet or 5 feet over their head?
by gramsey712 on Sep 29, 2008 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually...
Vince had passes all preseason long and the first game that were right on the hands… And Collins is “overthrowing” the recievers on long balls too because our recievers don’t have a second gear to get a long ball.
by Michaeltastic on Sep 29, 2008 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That said...
I don’t think Vince will ever have the emotional capacity to ever lead this team again. I hope I’m wrong but we’ll see

I agree with both things you said.
The Titans played a good game Sunday, but they also left a bunch of good plays on the field. There were at LEAST five key drops.

I was watching the games where Collins' accuracy is 55.6%
vs VY’s 62.3% last year. What games were YOU watching?
~Till the Halo burns out...
by Zu Long on Sep 30, 2008 9:00 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The "accuracy" stat you are looking at
takes in to account whether the ball was caught or not.
I am only watching football and where the ball goes.
Does no one think it is strange that all of the sudden Brandon Jones can catch?
It’s not because he can suddenly get open.
by gramsey712 on Sep 30, 2008 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
So your theory is that Collins is better at allowing our recievers to catch the ball
and this is demonstrated by a lower percentage of completed passes?
~Till the Halo burns out...
by Zu Long on Sep 30, 2008 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
no, it's demonstrated by passing being caught by WRs, not just TEs and RBs
That 25 yard dart to the back hip is a lot more valuable than those swing passes for 2 yards we’d been seeing.

Except there are two problems with that.
1st- Who you pass to is partially a function of coaching decisions, not necessarily quaterback skill.
2nd- Those “two yard swing passes” managed 6.67 YPA last season. In his three starts, Collins thus far has managed 6.32 YPA. I’m failing to see the significant upgrade in our offensive capabilities.

Collins
completion percentage may not be much higher than Vince’s last year, and we still aren’t throwing a ton of TD passes under him. But, my perception is that the wide receivers are much more involved in the game under Collins than they were under Vince. It’s who those passes are being completed to that I bet is the difference between them. Also, a 2-1 TD to interception ration is better so far than Vince’s 1-2 ratio from last year.
Someone want to post some stats on completions to wide receivers between Vince and Kerry, along with total completions per game? We have three games now under Kerry – should be enough data for some valid statistical comparison.
by numbertenox on Sep 29, 2008 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
And then, too, why try to throw for a TD when LenDale or CJ can run it in? It's not like you get bonus points for throwing. Red Zone efficiency has been much better in all four games.

yes
I don’t think “throwing touchdowns” is a very important stat. Agreed!
But I am curious about comparing completion percentages, yards per completion average, and # of WR passes completed per game between VY and KC. I’m too lazy to work that up though ;-). I do think as far as passing game health goes that the ability to spread the ball around and hit receivers down field is important – keeps the defenses honest.
by numbertenox on Sep 29, 2008 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
But that's my point.
The difference this year is CJ, not Collins.

Say what you want.
I think VY is done—at least with the Titans. If PK’s article is to be believed, then it sounds like the team is giving VY rope, and VY is setting about hanging himself with it.

Jeff Fisher
I think if it was another team then that might be the case, but Jeff Fisher is one of the most patient coaches I’ve ever seen. I think he would’ve preferred it if VY had not had to start his rookie year. Fisher’s way would’ve been to have him sit behind a vet for a couple years. I think Fisher will expect VY to learn behind Collins this year. During the offseason he will probably open the starting job up to competition between Collins, Young, & Simms (maybe).
by theologic on Sep 29, 2008 9:56 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Book it...
VY will at the very least see playing time this year. More likely, will be the starter by the end of the season.
Hey Jimmy, how about a poll? I’m curious what the general consensus is about VY’s timeline to come back as a starter for the Titans.
A) This season
B) Next season
C) Never
by SuperHorn on Sep 29, 2008 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hope you are wrong.
From what Coach said there are 2 ways VY would get the start. If Collins is hurt or if we are losing. I don’t see either one because our O line isn’t letting get Defenses get close enough to Collins to hurt him and I don’t think our Defense will “let” us start losing.
My 2 cents.
by DZone on Sep 29, 2008 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I appreciate your optimism
But, to expect an undefeated season is completely unrealistic.
That said, I’m certainly not cheering for Kerry to underperform, or the Titans to lose. At the end of the day, it’s only about what’s best for the team. I happen to think that this team is better with Vince under center.
by SuperHorn on Sep 29, 2008 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll agree with this: VY can be better than Collins. He just needs to get his head right. But... that's the hard part, no?

I agree
The team CAN be better under Vince, but the team can also be worse. I think he will sit until Fisher is absolutely certain they will be better. For that to happen Vince will have to be better than he was before his injury/meltdown.
by theologic on Sep 29, 2008 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think we will have an undefeated season.
In fact I think we very well might lose this weekend. But surely fisher would not pull Collins for one loss unless it was a total disaster. I can’t see that the team is better under VY. There is no reason to ditch Kerry unless he stops performing.

Two quick comments and I'm out.
That call on Gus Frerotte was questionable at best, but anytime a guy gets hit in the nuts by another player’s helmet, you gotta at least cringe. I think it was a sympathy flag more than anything.
Secondly, that fourth down call was BS and you know it. That guy was nowhere near the half-yard line they spotted the ball at, regardless of the fact that he fumbled the ball on the way down.
All in all your team did a good job in creating turnovers, and the Vikes coaching staff did a good job of turning tail. There’s a reason Childress’ has got a lower approval rating than Linehan right now.
by Robert Rence on Sep 29, 2008 9:57 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I was surprised the refs upheld the 4th down call as well,
but I don’t think it was a back breaker by any means. I understand Viking fans being a little pissed; I was taking a swipe more so at Florio than you guys.

I'm with you guys about the 4th down.
I’ve seen the replay 4 or 5 times now, and Gage never makes the marker. He got a gift of a spot, and replay should’ve caught it.
I really don’t like winning as the result of blown calls. Mike Pereira needs to get it together.
If I hit a hole-in-one on this grand slam the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.
by jasonkylebates on Sep 29, 2008 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
they had to throw the flag
I think KVB was unaware the ball was out of Frerotte’s hands. He was going for the sack and its hard to stop the big man in motion when he is determined to do that. It was not a cheap shot at all. It was football, and it happens. It ended up costing the Titans 7 points, but we got the win.
by Joy Kat on Sep 29, 2008 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The replay can't over turn that call.
There wasn’t any point of reference in the shot to reverse the call. It wasn’t like a goal line call where you can see the actual line that needs to be crossed.
I still think he was short, but the evidence wasn’t enough to over turn it. But as usual, there were enough bad calls for both sides to negate the overall effect. The roughing the passer on KVB was ridiculous, and led immediately to a TD.
The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.

What do they expect the Boom King to do?
He was airborne before G(p)ussy threw the ball, and he hit him in the waist.
Can’t hit em in the knees.
Can’t hit em high.
Can’t hit em in the waist.
Where in the hell are you supposed to him em?
by gramsey712 on Sep 29, 2008 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly, he was in momentum and it was unstoppable, but the refs are trying to
protect the qbs in the league so I understand why the flag was thrown. The ref seen the ball was away, and then KVB hit the QB that is all they are looking at and that was the reason for the flag. KVB just got caught up in a no win situation. He was doing his job and I would tell him to do the same thing again.
by Joy Kat on Sep 29, 2008 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Honestly, I don't think Gage made the first down
Titans caught a break there, the breaks have been going our way lately. That is great, but they can quickly go the other way, so remember the one’s we catch. Payback has a way of coming back.
It was suprising to see the Vikings outgained us on offense, disheartening really. The Titans dominated in turnover ratio and that was the game changer. Collins and offense played well, he missed a TD pass, other than that he held onto the ball and he made the plays necessary to get the win.
by Joy Kat on Sep 29, 2008 11:47 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
You can complain about the call all you want, but...
A) The linesman was right there. He had the best view of anyone, even the players.
B) It was reviewed and upheld.
It’s enough about the call. Each team got a few calls—one way or the other. In the end, the best team won.

KVB was unaware the ball was thrown and was just trying to get the sack. Not dirty, not a cheap shot, just a hard hitting defender playing the game the way it was meant to be - all out !! I would defend KVB to the end if anyone thinks that was cheap.
