Jeff Fisher: Vince Young "Mentioned Suicide Several Times"
Well just when we thought this was over, The City Paper has released the Metro Police "matter of record" from the incident Monday night. Here is what it says about Monday:
The report from Central Precinct Lt. Andrea Swisher states Titans' head of security Steve Burke notified police that he had “a player over at the stadium going off.”
“Sgt. Windus later advised me that it was Vince Young and that he was driving a black Mercedes and armed with a gun,” Swisher’s report states.
This is just scary stuff. I hate to keep talking about this but more stuff just keeps coming out.
Here is what Swisher mentioned from her conversation with Coach Fisher:
“I asked him (Fisher), ‘What made her worry about him?’ He stated, ‘His mood, his emotions, he is injured, he wants to quit, and he mentioned suicide several times.’ He (Fisher) went on to state that he (Young) left the house with a gun,” Swisher’s report states.
Click on the link above to read the rest of the report. It mentions that one of VY's gjys had tried to follow him from his home in Williamson County but could't keep up with him on Interstate 65.
Now we can all agree that we cannot believe anything Jeff Fisher says publicly regarding where VY is mentally. He is obviously going to lie to protect VY's interest, which is absolutely what he should do. Vince needs to get help, and I am hoping that the Titans have taken the necessary steps to get him the help he needs.

I am not sure that any of that is
any of my business.
I’m not surprised City Paper published it, but really I don’t think it helps anybody other than their advertisers for them to be airing all of that out in public.
Best wishes to him – hope he gets better. I also hope he realized, or somebody will explain to him, that he doesn’t have to play football. If it’s making him miserable, stop it. Money is never going to be a problem for him.

I Knew It
I figured it was more than “thin skin” once they went and got Simms.
We woulda kept Martin if it weren’t something more long term.

What is Fisher doing
How can he possibly think this will help the situation? This is a huge breach of trust by putting this out for the media to devour. Therapist-client privileges are sacred and the employer (Fisher) shouldn’t be letting others know what his client’s mental state is publicly.

The Polics Report is a matter of public record.
The City Paper undoubtedly filed a Freedom of Information Act request and got what they were legally entitled to. And Fisher had to know the firestorm that was coming. He would NOT have done this stuff without it being a real danger.
And again, if it was just gonna be a short-term deal, then they would’a kept I. Martin and not gotten Simms.

Not very encouraging,
The part about mentioning suicide will have to be addressed at some point by Fisher. It’s a felony to lie on a police report so he won’t be able to lie about what was said therefore we will be able to get context on how suicide was mentioned. What we do know, according to the police report, is that Vince either went to see or called his therapist and the conversation included Vince mentioning suicide and quitting football.
There is a difference between this-
Young(speaking to therapist):“I am thinking about killing myself or quitting football; possibly both.”
and this-
Therapist:“Did you ever think about killing yourself or quitting football; possibly both?”
Young: “Yes, I was on the bench hearing those boos and I just wanted to kill myself or at least quit football.”
Context is everything.
We also know that Vince has a fast car and a friend that he can get away from everyone else by visiting.
That’s it. That’s all the facts we have.
But don’t let that stop anyone from assuming Vince is a suicidal and irreparably damaged goods, as I can imagine the talking heads in the media will now start doing.
I still think Vince will be back in a few weeks as starting QB for the Tennessee Titans, and hopefully by then all of this will be behind him.
The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.

if you think vince is going to start again when he gets back from his injury. it takes alot longer to get your confidence back than it does to recover from sprained knee…..

I am suprised that Fisher would release this type of info
That is not his style. Not sure why that happened. He is the first one to go into damage control mode, and I admire him for that. I really don’t understand what his reasons are for letting it out now. I am really puzzeled by this. Unless Fisher was so upset by what has all happened that this is his way of letting him go. But that doesn’t make sense because he said that he would be the starter when Vince was healthy. I am absolutely mystified.
. There definitely are more important things than football. That is absolutely correct. The job is extremely demanding, no doubt and it does take a very special person mentally and physically to handle it. The mental side of it is just as if not more important than the physical side. I truly hope he is happy again and he can resume playing NFL football in a less demanding position.

I might be missing something but
I don’t see that Fisher let anything out. at all. The City Paper obtained this information from the metro police department via freedom of information act. Fisher was obviously going to pains to conceal this info (or at least generalize it massively) in his press conferences, and more power to him. None of us need to know this stuff. Fisher can’t do anything about the media being able to get at the police record of the call that TItans security made to the police and subsequent followup.
From what I can tell of this, Fish has done a remarkable job so far though an absolutely whacky situation. My estimation of him goes up a couple of notches.
Hopefully VY will heal – don’t care if he plays again or not, but hope he gets better. As far as the Titans go, they can put that stupid raccoon (or whatever it is) behind center and I’m still hollering on Sundays.

I just...
don’t care anymore. I hope Vince comes back as our starter and I hope he gets his head on strait, but I really don’t care about this story anymore. Collins, Simms, Young… whoever our quarterback is I am excited about winning somemore games this season.

Same here...
We had a great start to our season. And we have a chance to go 2-0 after such a long time. Let’s leave Vince alone with regards to his personal issues whether he comes back or not.

Man I feel terrible for Vince...
he can’t even talk to a THERAPIST without worrying about people finding out… I can’t imagine how much that sucks.
Regardless of everything else, my heart goes out to him and I hope he finds peace at his pace, not his job’s pace. This is bigger than football.

Agreed.
He is a celebrity and he should expect the media following him around, but I think what the city paper did was pretty classless. Sure, they’re legally entitled to that info, but when they obtained it, they should have clearly saw that it contained information about his personal conversations with his therapists. How did this remotely improve anything except the status of that paper?

Does it improve their status?
Or just get them more mentions in competing outlets?
There really wasn’t any need for this.

Right.
The guys from PFT are lawyers, and they live for this stuff.
There was no hiding this, and there was no point in not reporting it. Honestly, the Tennessean is the one that really looks bad because they probably had this on-hand but decided to let themselves be scooped. That was dumb.

Don't know if you guys have seen this.
Probably the best article I’ve seen on this topic. Fair, balanced, etc:

Good piece, I wonder who quoted the part at the end
I copied the following from the article.
One of his teammates offered this solemn and blunt thought, requesting anonymity:
“First off, no way Vince is going to be out the full four weeks. Knowing him, he will get healthy and be back way before that. But Vince needs to stop worrying so much about what is said on the outside and concentrate more on his teammates’ view of him. We’re more interested in that. He is taking it all on his shoulders and reacting like that and it’s only the first game of the season. We need him. We trust him. But it’s got to get better, his reactions to things. We’re going to help pull him through. But if stuff like this happens again, he is going to lose some guys in here. And I’m not sure he could win them back again.”

Fisher reacts to the info released by the police department
by 2tonedBLUE on Sep 13, 2008 10:59 PM CDT 0 recs
Good article.
It’s nice that Fisher took to the time to correct the record. Really, the police should have done that. Then again, if you’ve ever read a police report, they are prone to stating suppositions as fact.
