Thursday Camp Links: The Vince Young Feel Good Edition
Jim Wyatt has a nice piece on Vince Young's play yesterday. Alge Crumpler put it best:
"It's that competition. That's the thing I've found out about Vince is that when the lights go on, he thrives for competition,'' tight end Alge Crumpler said. "He made some great throws, and we spread the ball around and did some things well.''
That is why I don't put any stock in VY's inconsistencies from camp.
Wyatt also blogs that rookie receiver Lavelle Hawkins continues to impress in camp. He is battling for that slot receiver spot. That battle could get interesting once Roydell Williams is 100% because he seems to be a good fit for that role as well.
Terry McCormick's camp confidental has more praise for VY.
“He was decisive and made plays,” Fisher said. “When you’re a young quarterback and in a relatively new system, when you step on the field and you’re up against a completely different defense, and you’re completing passes, it means you’re improving.”
And Joy Kat weeps..
Titans Radio with more encouraging news from yesterday's workouts. TR also mentions that Roydell Williams will miss Saturday night's preseason opener.
The Titans and Rams will work out together again this afternoon.

Flawed logic...
That is why I don’t put any stock in VY’s inconsistencies from camp.
Jimmy, we all want to believe that Vince is gonna have a monster year, but let’s remember that last season, when the lights were on, and the games mattered, Vince basically went out there and threw twice as many interceptions as touchdowns.
There is no reason for him not to be consistent in camp, and the fact that he hasn’t been should be of concern to anybody who cares about this team.
What we need from Vince is for him to look great in practice, and legendary on gameday.

That makes sense
but I am not going to be worried until he doesn’t perform on Sundays this fall. Last season went poorly for him for a host of reasons, but this is a new season. If his numbers this year are similar to last year, I will be with you 100%.

New offense, new OC...
and while yes, VY struggled mightily at times last year, he also had some very good games: against New Orleans (on MNF, no less), both Indy games, the Chiefs, the 2nd Houston game he had a QB rating of 97 or higher…
What VY needs is less horrendous games. When he’s on VY is the tits.

Exactly my thinking Beans
Young is the epitomy of inconsistency. He looks good at times and others he totally bombs out. What do you call that?.
The hope of the season rests in the hands of the backup QBs as far as I am concerned.

You can't be the shiznit at every position
If the Titans, who when they’re good are a smash-mouth strong-D running team, had a “legendary” qb, they’d be cream of the league every year. The thumbtacks just need a pretty good, consistent QB – preferably one that can scramble. He doesn’t need to be a Manning or a Brady. That’s a “legendary” / hall-of-fame qb.
I’m not looking for VY to ever be that. I’m just hoping he can be more consistent with his throws while keeping the awesome scrambling ability he has judiciously in use. My hope for the season is just that. If he really lays a super-egg early, which I doubt, then I do think Kerry Collins is much more capable as Titans QB than he was in that stint at the beginning of the season a couple years ago in VY’s rookie year. We wouldn’t do too badly with Kerry this year. But Vince would have to suck massively for that to happen, and I really doubt he’s going to struggle so much that significant Kerry calls start up.
If VY is just a little improved this year over last, we are going to be a dangerous team. He doesn’t need to be anywhere near legendary for us to make the playoffs.

Don't put words in my mouth, Joy
I am a huge Vince Young supporter and get excited every time he takes the field.
I’m still concerned about the practice reports however, and will temper my enthusiasm with realistic expectations.
My expectations on the other hand do not involve Kerry Collins and Ingle Martin taking us to the Superbowl.
(p.s…it’s spelled epitome)

spelling
Spelling’s not her strong suit. But, she did have a ”?.” at the end of one sentence; that’d be grammar problem.
Why are we picking on Joy Kat’s posts before the season even starts? Pace yourselves, lads.

norm chow
has a lot to do with the struggles of last year, imo
i didnt see enough of the 2006 season to make a good, sound call on why VY performed better that year, but from what i saw last year, it looked like chow was trying to shove and cram a large, square peg through a small, round hole. thank goodness he and his offense are gone.
by titanintx on Aug 7, 2008 3:32 PM CDT 0 recs
umm
norm chow sucked ass and i called it when i said he was going to become chowmein at the end of the season last year.
i think vince will do ok but inconsistency in his passing game i think comes from his lack of concentration due to his wonderlick score. somebody needs to tell him to focus on every play not just once in awhile.
i think they need to simplify the offence alot from what chow was trying todo. vince couldn’t comprehend it and normchow was just as stupid to not realize vince couldn’t get it. the more chow tried to push his offence the more vince pouted.lets all hope they simplify the offence and run the offence more to vince’s strengths.

I couldn't disagree more
About dumbing down the offense. It’s not necessary
But, we are in agreement about Chow. Everyone likes to put his downfall on Vince, but I’m not completely sure his offense would have thrived with Leinart. Some college coaches aren’t meant for the NFL (see Steve Spurrier).
Chow took away Vince’s legs and tried to fit him into a certain mold. It’s exactly what Greg Davis tried to do with VY until the Missouri game of his Sophomore year when the coaches loosened him and and encouraged him to use his legs. The next year they implemented a zone read offense to utilize his rushing threat….one of the most prolific and efficient offenses in NCAA history.
Someone mentioned it above, but the reason VInce played better his rookie year is that he was playing loose, among other things. Then the offseason came, and Chow ruined him.
Good riddance. I can’t wait til the middle of this season once this offense really hums…

There’s also a certain irony in not spelling “Wonderlic” correctly.

Seriously
the Wonderlic is as useless as asking a draftee if he’d rather be a ‘lion or a tiger’ (which they do ask), and the 6 VY allegedly scored was a pure media rumor report which was discredited by the Combine, the NFL, and the company that creates/scores the tests…
