Tennessee Titans 53 Man Roster

Here is the Titans 53 man roster following today's cuts:

QB- Vince Young, Kerry Collins
RB- LenDale White, Chris Johnson, Chris Henry, Quinton Ganther, Ahmard Hall
WR- Justin Gage, Justin McCareins, Lavelle Hawkins, Brandon Jones, Paul Williams, Chris Davis
TE- Alge Crumpler, Bo Scaife, Craig Stevens, Dwayne Blakely
OL- Michael Roos, Jake Scott, Kevin Mawae, Eugene Amano, David Stewart, Daniel Loper, Leroy Harris, Mike Otto
DL- Kyle Vanden Bosch, Albert Haynesworth, Tony Brown, Jevon Kearse, Jason Jones, William Hayes, Jacob Ford, Kevin Vickerson, Dave Ball
LB- Keith Bulluck, David Thornton, Ryan Fowler, Stephen Tulloch, Josh Stamer, Stanford Keglar, Colin Allred
DB- Cortland Finnegan, Nick Harper, Michael Griffin, Chris Hope, Vincent Fuller, Eric King, Reynaldo Hill, Chris Carr, Donnie Nickey
P- Craig Hentrich
K- Rob Bironas
LS- Ken Amato

This biggest surprise to me is that both P. Williams and Chris Davis are both still on the roster.  I expected at least one, if not both, of the them to be cut.  It is time for them to step and prove that they belong.  It is also surprising that these 2 made it over Roydell Williams because at least he has done something on the field.

It is good to see Quinton Ganther get a much deserved spot on the roster.

That is the 53 for now, but does not mean that it will be at this time tomorrow.  The Titans will no doubt be looking at the players cut by other teams to upgrade.  Don't be surprised to see them bring in some help at wide receiver and/or defensive tackle.

The Titans will also be able to add 8 more players for the practice squad.  I expect Ingle Martin, Antonio Johnson, Biren Ealy and Cary Williams to be named to those spots if they clear waivers.

Comments from Jeff Fisher and Mike Reinfeldt after the jump.

Star-divide

Jeff Fisher

"This is always a difficult time of year for us and it seems like over the last couple of years the decisions have become harder, which is a good thing - it means we are more competitive and have more depth. We had to let some players go today that have been part of our program which is not easy. They were tough decisions, but we made the decisions that we thought were in the best interest of the club and I am aware that some of these players will resurface somewhere else in the league. We wish them well, and they have been tremendous workers and a part of our success. We will watch the cuts over the next 24 hours and if there is a player there that can improve us at a spot, then we will do our best to create a roster spot for them."

Mike Reinfeldt

"This is a hard day, parting with players who committed themselves to the offseason program and training camp. We appreciate their efforts and their work made us a better team. As we see every year in this league, you have turnover in your roster. I think our roster going into this season is stronger than last year and it starts with the offensive and defensive lines and how we play the game. I think the players around Vince Young are better than they were last year and we will continue to look for ways to improve our roster on both sides of the ball, whether that is a potential starter or someone that can fill a specific role."

No Roydell Williams.

Did he get cut? I guess he must have.

slaps forehead

There is absolutely NO talent there at WR. Hawkins better get healthy soon, ‘cause otherwise there’s not a lot there at all.

They better bring in A. Lelie or SOMEBODY to catch some damn footballs.

Or, at least bring in somebody who’s fast who MIGHT catch a ball (say 1 out of 5 times) to at least take pressure off the short out-routes. Else, it’s lookin’ grim.

Lelie

Saying he could catch it 1 out of 5 times is giving him too much credit.

They must have confidence that McCareins has a good year. That is one mediocre group of receivers though.

On behalf of the Wrs, I thank you for the complement

because calling these scrubs mediocre is a stretch.

I"m really surprised

They cut Roydell – also that WIlliams and Davis both survived. I’m very happy they kept Q. I"ll be astonished if they don’t make some additional moves at WR.

What in the hell is this?

They cut one guy who was tied for team leader in receptions last year, but they give the other one a big new contract (Gage)?

And they KEEP CHRIS DAVIS AND PAUL WILLIAMS??

I hope they know what they’re doing.

Anyone else surprised...

that Calvin Lowry was cut? I didn’t see anyone predict that. With him gone and Cole and Joiner also cut, the team looks a little thin at DB. Do you think they will look to add another backup safety or let Fuller be that second backup safety along with Nickey. If you need Fuller to fill in at safety, do you just move King into the nickel? I am just not comfortable with the depth that’s left on the roster now. Maybe the horrendous kick coverage at Green Bay led them to keep more ST players than normal.

I was obviously surprised

He was on my lock list.

Cutting R. Williams and/or Calvin Lowry

… to keep Donnie Nickey annoys me.

Special Teams.

And… remember, they said that Lowry beat out Nickey last year for that dime safety job, but the scuttlebut was that that wasn’t really true. I think they finally decided that Nickey really was a better back-up.

Regardless, he’s definitely better on Special Teams.

Re: Lowry

I don’t get it. He’s a great backup safety.

If I hit a hole-in-one on this grand slam the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

lowry sucks

they saw exactly what I saw…..

i don’t know if a S in the nfl misses as many tackles or passes due to taking the wrong angle….good riddance….

but cutting roydell was a mistake…..well maybe not, but keeping paul williams and chris davis was a mistake….

time to mine other teams scraps

Roydell Williams...

is one of two Titans who doesn’t drop everything thrown his way. The kid has the best year of his career, proves that he belongs, and the team cuts him.

Meanwhile, ol’ “hands of stones”, Brandon Jones makes the team. When BJ goes out there and loses us a game or two this year dropping a pass when it matters, we’ll miss Roydell.

What on god's earth...

Does Biren Ealy need to do to make this team?!?

BTW, I noticed that everybody cleared waivers, so...

…it seems like cutting Ealy and the rest was, if not a smart move then at least an acceptable one. They’re easily promotable from the Practice Squad. And B. Jones has a significant injury history.

Am I the only one that thinks Ingle Martin is gonna beat out K. Collins to be the back-up next year?

Cut Roydell Williams?

The one guy on the roster that proved he can get some separation last season. Sometimes I really wonder. Roydell will be a decent WR somewhere else and piss us all off.

I was totally against cutting Chris Henry, I don’t think you can cut a guy after 1 season. Not even a whole season at that. But how does a guy thats proved nothing make the roster over a guy that showed promise and actually accomplished some things? Unreal. Especially when WR is our biggest need position.

I know this sounds like an echo 5x through but cut Roydell and C.Lowry and keep D.Nickey? What are you thinking?

What does it say that 70% of us think that cuttin Roydell was a bad move?

by Big Bad Bulluck on Aug 31, 2008 5:19 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think it says......

that 100% of us aren’t even remotely close to coaching in the NFL.

Having said that……I don’t understand the move either. The only thing I can think is that his ankle was a lot worse than we know.

I don’t know how this team picks and choses the WR’s.

eeeeni mineeee MOE! Ok. Davis stays.

eeeeni mineeee MOE! Ok. P Williams stays.

etc. etc.

Sound about right?

I honestly don't understand the Ingle Martin cut. What happens if Young

goes down to injury and Collins in the same game ? Stranger things have happened. What does Fisher do in that case?
I realize Martin will probably end up on the practice squad, but that leaves him open to be picked up by some other team. It seems odd to have only 2 quarterbacks on the roster, when it is the most important position on a team.

by Joy Kat on Aug 31, 2008 8:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Most teams do that in the NFL now

and he has already been added to the practice squad.

Punter

that is what the punter is for.. Hentrich is pretty good at throwing the ball and last I knew he was the 3rd QB

by white02slpss on Aug 31, 2008 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They'd have to lose two QBs in the same game to have a real problem.

Behind a good O-Line, that is pretty unlikely. We all know he played well, but he didn’t play so amazingly well that some other team would pick him up and cut someone who already knows their system. I mean, he did good, but he didn’t do better than say Eric Ainge did for the Jets. And Ainge was in serious jeopardy of getting cut.

Really, the only reason to keep a guy that you’re not sure you’ll need is if you don’t think he’ll clear waivers. That, I think, explains in a nutshell why Biren Ealy was cut and Q. Ganther made the squad.
