David Climer Catches Up with Norm Chow

Climer's column yesterday on Norm Chow is an excellent read.  He seems to be really happy back in the college game and on the west coast.  There is no doubt in my mind that he will have that UCLA offense marching up and down the field in the next couple of years.  It seemed that he was just overmatched on the NFL field.

It is obvious to anyone with a brain that Chow was fired because of the regression we saw in Vince Young last season.  We will probably never really know how much of VY's failures last season were a product of Chow, but he was the obvious and easy scapegoat (they aren't going to cut VY).

The question now is what will VY do?  There aren't any excuses left.  Chow stifled his style of play.  Chow is gone.  The Titans brought in a guy that has plenty of experience with a VY type QB so it is on VY.  If he puts up numbers in 2008 that resemble his 2007 numbers, there will be no where left to look for him but in the mirror.

As you can tell from my projections on VY's 2008 numbers, for which I was ripped here and other places on the internet, my opinion is that VY will take the step forward this year that we were all hoping for last season.  2008 is going to be a great year to be a Titans fan.  What do you think about that Joy Kat??

My two cents...

While Chow definitely got fired for VY’s play (and more specifically a lack of red-zone know-how), VY couldn’t run on his quad last year.

He was healthy enough to play, most games, but he came up lame running countless times, and you could see that he couldn’t go 100%. I always had the feeling that Fish and Chow took advantage of the situation to force Vince to learn how pass the ball. In the process, they learned a couple of things… Chow was not particularly good at devising schemes that made use of Vince’s limited passing abilities, and Vince is not much of a weapon without his legs.

Was anyone calling for Chow’s head? No… but Fish knew that he could get ‘Dinger, who probably canvassed him for play-calling duties since Shanahan would not loosen the reins in Denver.

I agree whole-heartedly, Jimmy, we’ll probably never know how much of the problem this year was due to Chow. Titans fans trolling the blogosphere seem to throw up their hands and say “Hey…guess he just wasn’t cut out for NFL play-calling.”.

But it’s not that simple, and if Vince lays an egg this year, it’s not ‘Dinger they will point the finger at… it’s Vince.

I have to say though… Tebow would look good in Nashville blue, wouldn’t he? (kidding…)
