PFT: Haynesworth's interesting 1 year Deal
Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com is a horrible, horrible NFL analyst/predictor; he's a true embarrassment to the profession (the linked story was 100% false).
He is, however, very good at churning up rumors that don't have enough meat to make a reputable news source. Thus, their unsubstantiated stories should be taken with a grain of salt, but sometimes they have good stuff, such as this tidbit below on the nuances of Big Albert's pending 1 year Franchise tag:
There have been stories recently regarding the possibility that Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth will be the latest franchise player to play his franchise season with the ability to qualify for unrestricted free agency if certain triggers are met.
As we hear it, the team wants to impose a combined playing-time trigger and some type of high-end performance incentive, such as Haynesworth being named a starter in the Pro Bowl. Haynesworth’s camp is said to be pushing for an either-or in this regard.
Chances for a long-term deal currently are slim, primarily because the two sides are so far apart. We’re told that Haynesworth currently is aiming significantly north of the deal paid recently by the Bears to defensive tackle Tommie Harris.
I hope the Titans stick to having both triggers, if this is how the deal does indeed go down. If he plays at the level he did last year and doesn't miss significant time, Albert will most likely be the free agent who gets laughably overpaid (see: Clements, Nate), and such contracts are essentially non-existent in Titans history...
I'm on record as saying that if we have to make Albert highest paid DT in the league, then do it: we're not going to find anyone who does as much damage along the line and improves the entire defensive unit as he does, anywhere.
There's a risk with every NFL player. Albert is worth the investment.

It seems like Big Al WANTS to his FA.
Can’t really blame him, but he clearly wants to be in the BLOCKBUSTER salary range with his next deal, and I doubt that’ll happen for him in TN. I’m not at all sure that it SHOULD happen.

The one thing I'll give Albert, and I'm sure his agent is making the same point
is that Albert Haynesworth will never again, in all the years he lives, get a another payday the size of his next contract.

Re: I’m not at all sure that it SHOULD happen.
Can’t really argue this without knowing what those numbers would be, BUT….
If any player is worth one of the largest defensive contracts in NFL history, it’s Albert Haynesworth…that is if he proves he can stay healthy and perform at last years level for this entire season. However, if he can do those two things, there is no better active defensive NFL player in the entire league. He transformed our team from a bottom 5 defense to a top 5 defense just by being on the field. No other player in the league has that sort of impact.

Look, I got nothin' against Big Al, but he was on that last place team, too.
“If he can stay healthy and dominate…” That’s a BIG “if”. I truly hope it happens. My only point, really, was that he seems to be counting on it and factoring it in in advance.

albert haynesworth
doesnt deserve a big contract this year. Yes he was a starter at the pro bowl last year adn yes he had great season last year but he was hurt pretty much all season hes really done nothing up until last year and i think if he wants big money hes gotta take a 1 year deal with a good amount of money for next year before he starts reeling in the cash. For him to earn a big contract for next season i would expect something in the area of 45-50 tackles and 7-9 sacks along with playing all 16 games and hopefully extras then we will talk big money.

Re: hes really done nothing up until last year
First of all, I think we’d all agree that last year was a good year.
Provided that you think that’s the case, let’s look at the stats on a Tackle’s per starts basis:
07 – 3.33 tps
06 – 3.00 tps
05 – 3.71 tps
04 – 3.60 tps
03 – 2.90 tps
02 – 10.0 tps (obviously inconsistent because he saw serious PT)
Statistically, he was better in ‘05 and ‘04. Based on this, you would logically conclude either
a) Last year was a good year for Albert, as was ‘05 and ‘04.
or
b) Last year wasn’t a good year for Fat Al, and neither was ‘05 or ‘04.

Forgot to add...
There is an inconsistency if you are suggesting that last year was great and the other two years weren’t.

I'm pretty sure it is. I know he was drafted and played a little minor league ball
He was a 2 or 3 sport athlete at Vanderbilt… I know he played basketball and baseball but I think there was something else in there too…

75%
75% of whatever he’s asking for a long term deal is the most they should pay him, since he’s gonna always miss about 75% of the season. Does that logic work? Probably as long as you aren’t standing in front of him when you trot it out there.
If Big Al has another year as good as last, they need to think about paying him some serious money rather than letting him go to FA. Dominating DTs are hard to find. I’d rather pay out for a dominating DT than a star WR any day of the week.

i like florio
sure some of his stuff doesn’t materialize and somtimes his opinion is madening…
but overall, PFT is one of the best NFL sites out there…..it makes that crappy hashmarks blog that seems to be only about the dallas cowboys look like crap…
and besides, PFT, also has the best blogger (any sport) on the internet in Micheal David Smith

I agree with you on Hashmarks to this point
but they have added a bunch of guys, including Kuharsky, so it is going to be a lot better this season.
Yes, MDS is better than me.

MDS is a humorless twat, in my humble opinion... I can't stand his posts on PFT or the AOL Fanhus
but he’s a solid human news aggregator and that’s all he seems to try to be (although he’ll offer opinions on MMA)...
Florio is just insufferably smug to me. I go to the site daily because they do a great job of gathering links, but when it comes to putting things in context or giving and educated opinion he’s out of his element.

i like the idea of a 1 year, incentive laden contract for big al
anything to make him happy and get something done….
of course, i think we should just go ahead and ink him to a 4 year deal…but if he wants way north of Harris’s deal with the bears, that might be a problem…
