Slightly OT: Bears QB Situation
Does anybody think Rex Grossman is the answer? Kyle Orton? But if not one of them, then who?
If you were the Bears, who would you be trying to sign right now? I know Daunte Culpepper is available, and Chris Simms could be had, probably for a 4th round pick. But are those guys really better than the guys already on the roster? And don't forget, the Bears play the Titans this year. This is IMPORTANT!
So... who should Chicago be targeting?

The Bears are in trouble
They don’t have an NFL caliber QB on their roster. Better for us. The Bears are determined to never have a QB. Mcmahon was ok for 2 years… but really the Bears have been sub-par at that position since the 1970s.
For some reason they just don’t think it matters very much to win football games… kind of like the Titans at the WR position.

They could...
get Doug Flutie out of retirement. He’s better than what they have right now.

I can't stand Flutie
of course I was 3 when he won the heisman and threw that Hail Mary, but he’s always annoyed the crap out of me… the pooch kick stunt didn’t help legitimize him to me.

You were obviously not a Chargers fan during the Ryan Leaf era.
Trust me, Flutie is great. He’s not spectacular, but for a club that just needs a QB with some talent and enough brains to not screw up, Flutie is that guy.

Bill Simmons summed it up for me:
These are copied and pasted from Simmon’s mailbag post. he’s listing things NE fans have let Flutie slide with (I, however, find them all pretty annoying and when you combine it with really, really smug attitude most of the time it’s unbearable, IMO):
• During the NFL strike in 1987, he pulled a Shane Falco and crossed the picket line to play for the Pats as a replacement QB. We didn’t hold it against him.• During the ‘88 season, when he was finally given the starting QB job over Tony Eason after we did everything but throw bags of urine at then-coach Raymond Berry, Flutie was incompetent enough that he headed to Canada and wasn’t seen for another nine years. We all eventually agreed to pretend that this never happened.
• Not only did he keep the mid-’80s pseudo-mullet going into the mid-’90s, but his wife kept the Shelley Long ‘80s cut (hair over the shoulders, parted bangs over the forehead, a little too frizzy) going over that same time. We all agreed not to say anything.
• He started a crappy rock band with his brother (a la the Bacon brothers) and we never made fun of him for it.
• He brought his glove to a baseball game at Fenway and caught a foul ball … nobody made a “Why are you bringing your glove to a baseball game?” joke.
To each his own though…

First off...
...the mullet was OBVIOUSLY a fashion statement. Secondly, granted his initial tour in the NFL was garbage, but come on! He won the Grey Cup about 19 times! And the NFL is a “what have you done for me lately” league. He went out on top, at the age of 40!
The rest of that stuff is fair game, especially the Fenway Park thing. I’m still waiting for lightning to strike that place and burn it to the ground.

He's not bad at the college football TV work he does.
There. I said something positive (hate to be a negative nancy here).
