Long-term Deal for Albert Haynesworth Unlikely According to His Agent

Jim Wyatt is reporting that there has been no movement made in the contract negotiations for Albert Haynesworth:

“There has been no significant movement from the Titans on a long term deal since prior to the Combine in February and I don’t think this will change before July 15th,’’ Speck said in an e-mail.

“We have spoken several times in the past few weeks and our conversations have recently focused on an idea that I proposed in March which would require Albert to sign the tender but in return the Titans would agree not to use the franchise tag on him again next year.’’

This is a little discouraging, but it does not mean that a deal won't get done.  Most of the time these deals do not get done until the last minute.

cap space

anyone know how much cap space the titans currently have for this year and next? i’m guessin they still have a good amount. i don’t get why teams insist on backloading contracts. why not pay the man if you got the money. it’s all about gaurantees nowadays anyways.

I'm hoping they can get the contract done this year

while we have extra room because Reinfeldt has shown a smart habit of front loading contracts when you know you have the cap space… this prevents salaries from skyrocketing in the last years and causing major problems. This would also leverage against the risk of giving Big Albert a long-term deal.

If Floyd had done a better job of that he’d probably still be here…

Big Al is unfortunately still a big risk.

He’s never made it through a whole season, and until last year, he had a reputation for taking plays off. You can hardly blame the Titans for being careful, especially given that he wants-and can probably get-a blockbuster contract.

That said, I wouldn’t listen to anything the agent says. He’s trying to pressure the team, and he’s using the media to do it. There’s a lot of that going on this off-season.
