A Closer Look at Jason Jones, DE, Eastern Michigan

Draft day is always exciting as a Titans' fan during the Mike Reinfeldt regime. You never really know what is going to happen. Most of us were just sitting there waiting for the Titans to move up as all of the top receivers were still sitting there as the 2nd round ticked along. Obviously that did not happen. Instead the Titans took Jason Jones, DE, Eastern Michigan.
On the surface Jones appears to be just what the Titans need for their defensive line. He is a big dude at 6-5, 273 that played some tackle and end in college. He is more of a run stuffer than a pass rusher so we will probably see him doing a lot of rotating with Jevon Kearse. If that is the case, I really like the pick because that will make Kearse that much more effective. His NFL.com draft profile says he is a high motor guy.
All of his weaknesses seem to be when it comes to pass rushing. That makes this a good pick for the Titans because he will have some time to develop because of the addition of Kearse. He only had 14 sacks in his college career, but he did have 50 tackles for loss. Give Jim Washburn a couple of months with this guy, and he should develop into a solid player.
We will finally be moving to SBN 2.0 tomorrow. It will be a new and exciting day around here..

Good point!
With that said, I'm still a little worried about what happens when A. Haynesworth goes out this year. When he and KVB are in, it's all good. But he's never yet made it 16 games, there's certainly not a monster DT in this year's class--I don't think.

Sounds like the exact inverse of the DE we got
I like it, but I would have liked Earl more (didn't see that nugget coming did you?), then get a vet D-lineman who is cut June 1st.

I'm officially giddy. I think most casual observers have no idea how important those full speed jukes and his ability to beat guys to a spot in the corner are in the NFL.
I pity the fools who get caught in a foot-race with him next year, unless they're Houston Texans... I have no pity for them.

From ESPN
Tennessee Titans: GRADE: C
Running back Chris Johnson is a good player, but I wasn't expecting him to go to Tennessee, especially because the Titans need a wide receiver. (They should have looked at WR Devin Thomas in the first round.) They did get WR Lavelle Hawkins in the fourth round and Vince Young will like the former California wide receiver. Jason Jones can play DE or DT. I don't have a problem with the player they drafted on Day 1, but the philosophy is skewed. It was the third straight year Tennessee drafted a running back in the first two rounds. Craig Stevens is a good blocking tight end. William Hayes has good closing speed for a defensive end, but was a reach in the fourth round. Stanford Keglar was a good fourth-round pick with some ability, and seventh-rounder Cary Williams could make this team as a developmental cornerback.

From PFT
The Titans got one, too. And his name is Stanford Keglar.
Kelgar, a linebacker from Purdue, was picked by the Titans in round four. Keglar also is awaiting trial on three charges resulting from a May 2007 bar fight: battery, false informing, and disorderly conduct.
"We fully investigated everything associated with the incident," Fisher said. "We are aware of the status currently and felt like it was just a one-time issue. It was involving a teammate and we expect it to get resolved."
Or maybe these simply relied upon this assessment of him: "Suspended for one game in 2005 (teammate got hurt when the pair were rough-housing in the locker room), but his character is unquestioned." (You need to click on the "Analysis" button to see it; thanks to MDS to pointing this link out to me.)
Coincidentally, the Titans drafted three years ago another guy who was involved in a one-time bar fight during his college days.
And his name is Pacman Jones.

More from PFT
In the interests of being fair and balanced (as opposed to our usual strategy of being arbitrary and capricious), we've been contacted by the agent for Titans rookie linebacker Stanford Keglar, who wanted to give us Keglar's side of the story as to our posting from earlier today regarding Keglar's pending criminal charges.
Jeff Chilcoat of Sterling Sports Management in Columbus, Ohio tells us that he expects Keglar to be cleared. "We fully anticipate the charges will be dropped later this month," Chilcoat said by phone. (And since it's the 28th day of the month, the dropping of the charges therefore should come fairly soon.)
Chilcoat explained that Keglar was a bystander in a bar fight involving former Purdue tight end Dustin Kellar, who was selected in the first round on Saturday by the Jets. Kellar apparently was on the losing end of the deal, so Keglar jumped in to break it up.
Supposedly.
We've got no reason to doubt Chilcoat for claiming that his client is innocent, and we appreciate Chilcoat giving us his client's side of the story. But the reality is that every agent or lawyer with a client facing criminal charges is going to say the guy didn't do it.
Regardless of whether, you know, he did.
